10:02 AM
The thing on the left is the number of arguments

You have the combinators for those?

Nope
The first two yes
But the rest no
I can figure it out later though with Zgarb's help
But it might not be optimal

What' the second one?

Second one is C
See above
First one is B

Oh right
That doesn't match the C you have as test case in your challenge though
which is the third in your gist

10:07 AM
@Fatalize From third on it's random

MY DOG ATE THE TRIPE (in nethack)

I just did random stuff

Question: is MyClass goat(arg1); the same as MyClass goat = MyClass(arg1); or MyClass goat = new MyClass(arg1);

@Downgoat What lang

C++

10:08 AM
I thought that was Java
But they're basically the same

@Qwerp-Derp I mean the thing you call C in your challenge is the third in your gist, whereas here you say it's the second

@Qwerp-Derp what are?

@Downgoat new creates it on the heap

@Fatalize The C in the challenge is third, while the C I describe above is 2nd (and is the proper C in combinatory logic)

which means you then have to delete it, which is not the case if you don't use new

10:09 AM
I should change the name in the challenge, shouldn't I?

I know that, however I am asking which MyClass obj(args); does

@Qwerp-Derp Well probably yes

@Fatalize Fixed

Anonymous
@Downgoat Neither, though it's closer to the second.

Anonymous
There's a very important distinction between the first two (regular constructor vs copy constructor)

10:12 AM
oh, can you link me to a source on each?

Anonymous
The only thing you have to know is which function gets called with each

Anonymous
MyClass goat(arg) is MyClass::MyClass(arg), MyClass goat = MyClass(arg1) is MyClass::operator=(MyClass)

Anonymous
In the second one, you're making a temporary object and copying it into a permanent object

oh, ok. Thanks

Anonymous
The third one is dynamic memory allocation which is considerably different from the other two, in that it returns a pointer, and you are responsible for deleting the memory after you're done

10:19 AM
Is there any real speed/accuracy difference between using sqrt(n) vs pow(n, 0.5);?

Anonymous
In what language?

C++

Anonymous
C++?

Anonymous
Almost certainly not

Anonymous
Any reasonable compiler would compile sqrt(n) and pow(n, 0.5) to the same thing

10:20 AM
Okay, I'm rewriting CheddarNumber class in C++ because it's super-slow rn

Anonymous

oh, I see
but why is "Copy constructor for Foo called" never printed for a=1 then?

Anonymous
I guess it got optimized out

Anonymous
Tricksy compiler

@Downgoat Where is source code for CheddarC++?

10:28 AM
hoi

@Mego D: I'll add -O0 then
@Qwerp-Derp in bindings branch
okay, should Cheddar numbers all be doubles or long doubles?
I will add bigints later

Anonymous
long doubles

Should I write combinatory logic in Assembly?
How do you even open files in Assembly

@Qwerp-Derp I added parentheses generation and found B

Let alone user input

10:31 AM
?- find_solution([1,[2,3]],C).
0
1
2
3
4
C = [[[s, [k, s]], k]] ;
Unnecessary parentheses but it's ok

Yeah it's good
You should include left-associativity

I have to fix some things though because it generates a lot of duplicates

To get rid of the unnecessary parens
Also how fast was it to generate B?

@Qwerp-Derp It's there, but it gets generated later

10:32 AM
% 619,967 inferences, 0.062 CPU in 0.061 seconds (102% CPU, 9935305 Lips)
C = [[[s, [k, s]], k]] .

But it works anyway so that's good

So fast

Whoa

but it gets slow real quickly

YASD holding .

10:32 AM
Mmhmm
Now try C
Update the gist

@DestructibleWatermelon That's good, isn't it?

Might take a while

Odd request: Computer I'm using tildas button doesn't work, can someone send ASCII tilda

your solution has 10 symbols
it already stalls at 6

@Fatalize How does your thing work anyway

10:33 AM
@Qwerp-Derp Generate all strings like a dumbass and try them

@Downgoat ~

Sweet thanks

@Fatalize Oh
Do backticks work @Downgoat?

@Qwerp-Derp I think I'll get to 10 in a bit, took about a minute from 0 to 7

no

10:34 AM
@Downgoat ` here you go that's a backtick

@KritixiLithos I WANTED TO EAT IT

@Fatalize Whoa what
That's slow

also that was YASD from eating a rotted corpse

But the pet will like you more if it eats tripes or something like that
I died from giant ants

YASD?

10:35 AM
it was just some random tripe

@Qwerp-Derp Well there are a lot of strings of 1 to 7 chars of s, k and parentheses

Nethack?
That's true

no to mention my thing is bad and generates duplicate strings
which slows down even more

hey
they even have the stupid thing i did
> Eating rotten food after recently praying

?- time(find_solution([1,2,[3,4]],C)).
0
1
2
3
4
5
6
% 115,298,678 inferences, 6.911 CPU in 6.934 seconds (100% CPU, 16683733 Lips)
C = [s, [k, [s, [k, s], k]]]
@Qwerp-Derp ^
That's your 11th case
Checked by hand I think it works
Other cases from 2 to 12 take at least 7 symbols
(not counting parentheses)

11:11 AM
Is that 0-indexed?

(my program is a bit bugged though)

Yeah it works
ding
Dammit I worked with the S and K combinators for too long I already memorised what they do
@Fatalize Update your gist pls I want to see code

Can anyone tell me why this:
  static inline Persistent<v8::Function> & constructor() {
    static Persistent<v8::Function> my_constructor;
    return my_constructor;
  }
would be better over just a constant?
In file included from ../src/binding.cc:1:0:
/home/ubuntu/.node-gyp/4.6.1/include/node/v8.h: In static member function ‘static void NumberObject::Init(Nan::ADDON_REGISTER_FUNCTION_ARGS_TYPE)’:

Such cryptic...

11:27 AM
Can't help you there, you have to ask wizards in C++
Ask the people at crypto.stackexchange.com for more stuff

Anonymous
@Downgoat Globals are bad. Singletons are better.

Anonymous
@Downgoat You need gccfilter

@Mego How do you know this are you a wizard

Hello

11:51 AM
@Fatalize Are you still testing?
@Zgarb Are you on?

@Qwerp-Derp I might continue a bit later, not now
@Qwerp-Derp updated
It's bugged though, for example 1 [k 1 2] won't work
basically it doesn't work properly when terminals get at the beginning of the expression, and the rest of the expression has parentheses

@Fatalize I changed specs, S and K won't be in the output bit
But that doesn't matter here I think

No it doesn't
I noticed this because I found the combinator for 1 2 => 2 1 online and noticed it didn't work

Anonymous

S(K(SI))K 1 2 => 2 1 (with I = SKK)

12:05 PM
Mmhmm
@Fatalize Wait so does the one online not work
Or does your one not work

I found this formula in a wiki
not with an online tool
Mine doesn't work in that it will miss potential solution
so it partially works I guess

CMC: Figure out this sequence: 1, 2, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 40, 56, 60, 72, 80, 84, 88, 96, 104, 108, 128, 132

@ConorO'Brien I noticed my answer could have come across a little bit rude, I'm sorry for that. (I really needed to go to bed:) So if you have any questions about it feel free to ask, it is one of my favourite topics=)

12:22 PM
@mınxomaτ a link on your blog, here is dead btw :(

@Mego oh, it didn't come off as rude at all! I looked into it last night, it's really a fantastic concept

@ConorO'Brien did you mean to answer to mego?:)

12:42 PM
Why is it always me that gets hit with the mis-ping? :P

@Mego Let me hit you with a non mis-ping =)
@El'endiaStarman Smells like a new challenge: youtube.com/watch?v=ineO1tIyPfM

Anonymous
@flawr Thanks, makes me feel better :)

@Mego Also: Feel free to watch that video! It is quite interesting.
(a challenge about it is in the process of being written=)

Anonymous
I'm going to watch it in a few minutes

12:59 PM
Does anyone know how to convert lambda functions to combinatory logic? Because I need to ask a question
I need a lambda symbol...

@Mego I have no idea. I blame mobile.
@flawr no haha

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

flawrPi = 3.1414.. code-golfmathgeometry Inspired by this video of Infinite Series. Introduction Pi is defined as the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. @NewSandboxedPosts you're quick!

@flawr I like the challenge idea, but you've got several typos in your formulas

1:17 PM
@Mego I just switched out one x to y, anything else?

Anonymous
@flawr Actually no, I'm just apparently incapable of reading right now

Q: Draw the digital timing diagram

zeppelinBelow is a (schematic) Digital timing diagram, for one of the (undisclosed) basic logic gates. ┌─┐ ┌─┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─┐ ┌─┐ ┌───┐ A ──┘ └─┘ └─┘ └─┘ └─┘ └─┘ └── ┌───┐ ┌───┐ ┌─┐ ┌─────┐ ┌─┐ ┌─┐ B ┘ └─┘ └─┘ └─┘ └───┘ └─┘ └ ┌─────┐ ┌─┐ ┌─┐ ┌───┐ X ──┘ └───┘ ...

1:47 PM
@Mego Are you familiar with the Lp norm?

Who codes in Haskell here?
I'm having a bad impression of it already

@Qwerp-Derp sometimes, but far from a pro. Why?

Anonymous
@flawr Yes, I am

Is this good styling?
It looks really ugly IMO

Anonymous
I had misread the formulas you gave, and thought they had typos. In actuality, I haven't had coffee yet.

1:52 PM
@Qwerp-Derp It doesn't look too bad, but then again I'm not really that good
@Mego Well I think I found some kind of contradiction in this video.

@flawr OK
It's just a big wall of text to me, there aren't that many keywords at all

@Qwerp-Derp haskell doesn't have many keywords

That's probably why

@Qwerp-Derp yeah, all the keywords are in bold black

OK then it's the highlighter that's really bad then right?

1:54 PM
@Qwerp-Derp and I highly recommend looking into haskell, it is a great (but not so easy) langauge!
@Qwerp-Derp No, I don't think so?

The keywords are in bold black...

welly ou really don't need so many kewords, that is why they aren't really considered as important
and haskell is really terse
@Mego No I was asking because I think I found some contradiction in the video:
in 6:38 she sais for p=3 we get pi = 3.26

@Mego I recently made an edit to my combinatory logic challenge thing
Would "hard-coding is disallowed for solutions, but allowed for smaller combinators" good, as long as I limit the amount of combinators?

@Mego Nevermind, I just found out what I'm doing wrong!!!

@Qwerp-Derp I don't get why you would disallow any hardcoding
Sure that means that one can just make a program that uses results found by others but at the same time it can't improve
Whereas hardcoding things like i, or c, etc. can help find other things faster
I guess you could say "You can hardcode additional combinators, assuming that your program can derive them in less than an hour with more elementary combinators"
So you can hardcode i as long as your code finds it in less than an hour with k and s, then you can hardcode c if it finds it with k, s and i in less than an hour, etc.

2:07 PM
That's good
@Fatalize I upgraded the thing to 10 hardcodes
Which should be enough, depending on the testcase size
Hmmm... I need more combinators
At least 100
I have 1/6 of my goal
Guys can you provide comparators?
How should I make this so that everyone can edit a common notepad? Github is too big...
Please add more combinators in the above link: ^

I fixed my program so that it executes combinatory logic properly (I think) but now it's slow as hell

@Fatalize You know what to do...

because it doesn't fail for a lot of programs where it incorrectly failed before

That's good

Can't even finish all strings of length 5 or less in less than 2 minutes now
@Qwerp-Derp No?

2:21 PM
Upload to Gist?

Oh

You don't have to if you don't want
Also can you help in making more combinators?

Q: 12 hour to 24 hour time converter

CarcigenicateAmazingly, this simple task doesn't seem to exist already, so... @Qwerp-Derp By combinators you mean expected output right?

Yeah, check the hackmd thing here

2:30 PM
Can't edit it without logging in

and X 1 2 3 4 5 6 => 2 4 6

That should be fixed, everyone can edit now

Did anyone ever figure out what the 6 hat is for? I just got one, and all I've done on the site today was downvote, undownvote, and a couple comments.
Oh, and I upvoted a question.

Secret Hat Hint #2: This time for 2 hats 6 and 8,243,721. Bert & Ernie have always been companions. As companions, they could work together with each other. — bluefeet ♦ Dec 22 '16 at 20:56
Not sure that's very helping

iirc it's for deleting or making comments, and the other is for the opposite

I got the "6" hat. The best I can think of is that I downvoted an answer with a comment explaining and then upvoted the answer after it was corrected (the author of the post also answered me and upvoted my comment). — Voo Dec 27 '16 at 22:24

Interesting

And you commented on my answer just a few minutes ago

3:42 PM
Yeah, I figure it has to be related to that.
I undownvoted after you changed your answer. That was probably the trigger.
Did you get an 8,243,721 for it?

Nope
I only got 6, but that was weeks ago

Aww. I was hoping it would give one to one of the users involved, and the other to the other.
Because that would make perfect sense.

Maybe 8XXXXXX is the opposite of 6. You upvote, leave a comment, then unupvote or something

Hats normally incentivize good behavior though.

Such good behavior that you have to make separate chat rooms for them :P

4:00 PM
Note that I said nothing about abuse. :P
That said, hats are usually based on beneficial usage patterns, and upvote-comment-unupvote isn't really one of those.

yeah, but I don't think it's for that
I have them both and I haven't unupvoted anythin

We've got 3-4 days remaining
Then bye-bye hats

Perhaps one is for questions and the other is for answers?

i got my trophy "hat"
maybe i'm supposed to wear it upsidedown

@KritixiLithos Then what's Edge a synonym for? Smart-poop?
@ais523 That's a good thing, especially if the ping isn't on the visible area of the chat anymore. Then clicking it will scroll to it.

In the Era of smartphones and smart homes, Microsoft's Windows 10 showcases smart... poop!

@KritixiLithos IoT poop
Poop containing an IoT connected smell sensor.
Cortana, please flush the toilet. Flushing...

Hahaha, a connected toilet would be fun. You could turn the bidet on when people are in there.

aren't more modern bidets a separate appliance

Dunno. My main experience with them was in Japan, where they're usually built-in.
And I wouldn't call their fancy toilets anything not modern :P
I swear I've seen some with more buttons than my tv remote.

4:19 PM
@mbomb007 I have encountered an unexpected blockage while flushing the toilet.

> Great, I got the Brown Screen of Death again...

In one of my dreams, I went to the toilet to see it overflowing with poop and they soon exploded all over me while slowly killing me.

... what

It was literally a "Brown Screen of Death" as I watched myself in third perspective drowning in the poop.

4:35 PM
There's an IoT SE now
I think it's in beta

First question: "why does your security suck?"
gold badge for sure

I'm following Google on Area51

I just became the one follower on Google to push it over the threshold.
Just needs questions now

4:54 PM
@KritixiLithos @Geobits we should nuke our comments and talk here instead

Can I return 0 now?

I nuked my initial ones already.
I'd still say no. The question gives an alternative integer value to use if falsy, but 0 is never falsy in Java/Processing that I know of. — Geobits 1 min ago
0 is neither -1 nor falsy in the language.
I don't particularly like the way the question restricts output, but unless it's changed, a zero doesn't seem to fit it.

I've asked in the question comments
I'd say for now keep the solution as is but check to see if the spec is relaxed later

Ok, anyways it's just 1 extra byte, equivalent to a small value in java golf :P

Generally speaking, asking for output to be an integer or boolean sucks. At least here there's the alternative -1 to boolean. Not ideal, but better than it not having that option.

4:58 PM
does a user have to have a chat user for you to create a room with them?

I discovered Stackexchange chat when some of my comments were migrated to chat, so no.
