4:00 AM
HAPPY NEW YEAR UTC-4!
I've got one hour left.

wat
4hrs here
CMC: golf the name of your time zone without using it

EST.
@wat, where do you get your name? From the JS/Ruby syntax talk?

wat
@ZacharyT just the meme in general
I actually saw that after I set my username
the timezone name has to be in Linux format
something like America/Los_Angeles

@El'endiaStarman the drop is just in perfect condition
after being shot at
and then only because the end vibrates it breaks
I wonder if it's possible to make a prince rupert's drop without an achilles heel

wat
bash+coreutils+tzdata: ls /*/*/*/*/Los*

4:05 AM
@orlp I think you'd have to have a perfect sphere of molten glass to do that.
15
Q: Is it possible to build a perfectly spherical Prince Rupert's drop?

Vladimir CraveroPrince Rupert's Drops are glass objects created by dripping molten glass into cold water. While the outside of the drop quickly cools, the inside remains hot for a longer time. When it eventually cools, it shrinks, setting up very large compressive stresses on the surface. The result is a sort...

@El'endiaStarman can glass be magnetic when subject to a sufficiently strong magnetic field?

wat
@El'endiaStarman make one on the ISS

@wat That will print a lot more than just the timezone.

@wat I don't think air cooling is quick enough, and I feel like having a ball of hot molten glass would be a really bad idea on the ISS. :P

wat
@El'endiaStarman k

4:07 AM
Are you trying to tell me your timezone is /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Los_Angeles?
5

wat
no crap
i mean you know what
whatever

@orlp Hmm...I'm not sure. I seem to recall that basically everything is magnetic given a sufficiently strong magnetic field.

@El'endiaStarman we totally need to make this now

wat
was he kicked?

But I'm not sure about glass since it's a different sort of material.

4:09 AM
although I'm not sure if the scientists will allow us to pour molten glass into their super duper expensive megamagnet
frogs are
I believe this is thanks to the dipole moment of water though

@orlp Yeah, precisely. Glass is an amorphous crystalline solid, which might do nothing when exposed to a super strong magnetic field.

wat
@El'endiaStarman mix in a metal

@wat I don't think a prince rupert's drop plays nice with impurities
@El'endiaStarman according to wikipedia silicon is diamagnetic
but I don't know if it retains this property when heated beyond melting point

How to magnetic fluids even work?

@wat Aside from orlp's point, not all metals are paramagnetic (attracted to magnets). A couple are diamagnetic, which means that it is repelled by magnets.
@Pavel Lots of metal particles suspended in a fluid. I think.

4:12 AM
@El'endiaStarman hrm
technically

Han is a monotypic genus of agnostid trilobite, whose sole member is Han solo. The type specimen of H. solo was found in marine strata of the Arenig to Llanvirn-aged Zitai Formation of Middle Ordovician southern China, and is named after the character in Star Wars. == Taxonomy == This taxon was erected in 2005, based upon fossil material found in beds of lower Zitai Formation exposed in Maocaopu, Reshi, Taoyuan County in north Hunan, China. Fossil material include a cephalon and two pygidia. It was found to belong to family Diplagnostidae, subfamily Pseudagnostinae; it was originally thought to...

Mercury is very weakly diamagnetic, by the way.

can't we just make two hollow metal spheres with high melting point

> Han is a.... genus of.. trilobite, whose sole member is han solo

machined with high precision

fill each half with glass
and weld them together
then heat the metal sphere beyond the melting point of glass, but within the metling point of the metal
and maintain this heat for a long duration
until the glass inside is fully molten
then suddenly stop heating the metal
and super cool it
once the glass inside is sufficiently cooled throw the entire thing into acid to get rid of the outer metal sphere

You'd have to get the glass into the metal sphere first, which necessitates melting it once. I don't know if you can reliably re-melt and re-solidify glass into a Prince Rupert's drop.

Are you lot trying to make a WMD or something

@El'endiaStarman how do you think a regular prince rupert's drop was made in the first place

I can tell from all the backticks in the time capsule string that a vast number of you are markdown trolls.

4:15 AM
I have just found out the Showcase is alive again.

@HelkaHomba wat

@orlp .....point.

@HelkaHomba Yeah, it was kind of hilarious to watch the results come in.

the hard part is precisely manufactoring the two halves

(I've been waiting a year to say that.)

4:16 AM
and filling them exactly with glass
but I believe it's sort of feasible

@HelkaHomba i don't even know what mine was >_<

I think I had q... maybe not though

Has the string been released yet?

4:17 AM
What are you guys talking about

@ETHproductions iirc mine was one of "{}p"

@ETHproductions No. I'm not saying any more just yet.

@Pavel we made a time capsule out of ascii chars last year

Dec 31 '15 at 23:20, by Calvin's Hobbies
We should make a time capsule string. Everybody gets to add one character and next new years we'll see who can make the best program out of all the characters with the esolangs that exist then.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ This is not true. :P

4:18 AM
okay, thanks for letting me know
in that case I don't know what I did at all

@El'endiaStarman do you happen to have glass, multi million dollar machining tools, a vacuum chamber, torches, and acid?

Once Helka posts the challenge I'll make the responses spreadsheet public, I guess.

@orlp I might in the shed in my backyard.

I'm kinda doubtful about the multi million dollar machining. :P

It's a big shed.

4:19 AM
@Dennis you never know what treasure you can find hidden in your shed

IIRC I probably put a backtick because I wanted to make sure that I could write an Element program with the resulting characters (backtick = output).

@orlp Ahhh I remember seeing that on Imgur a while ago.

@PhiNotPi This is accurate.

@HelkaHomba when are you posting the challenge? PST new years?

I'm 99% sure I did either a backtick or a q. I'm torn 50-50 between those two though

4:22 AM
I'm really confused cause I thought I did 'p'
hey @BaldBantha, haven't seen you in a while

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Not sure. Tonight if I can, otherwise tomorrow.

Did I submit a character?

@HelkaHomba is it going to be before/after PST new years if tonight?

Darn, if it was still up I'd submit a ~
Then we could do RProgN!

4:23 AM
Is there something time-capsule-y that we can do for this next year?

@Dennis Yep

@Dennis I'm not sure. DK only gave me the string, not who gave which char

@ATaco Actually, I'm now 50% sure I did a tilde
I just can't make up my mind...
Alright, it's less than an hour until 2017 for me, and I'm going to bed... And as much as I love golfing and hanging out with you guys, I have a lot of work to do to get into college next fall, which means PPCG is going to have to go on the back burner. I'll still reply and golf occasionally, but for the most part you're not going to see me around during weekdays.

Well if I see one, I'll be able to write maybe usefull RProgN

@ETHproductions night!
good luck with college!

wat
4:24 AM
@ETHproductions can I add a char before 2017 starts?

@HelkaHomba I read that as donkey kong for a moment

@wat Ask Doorknob

@Doorknob is monkey confirmed

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ So did I, the first few times I saw it.

wat
@Doorknob can I add a char before 2017 starts?

4:25 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ If it's tonight then before, i.e. in the next 3.5 hours. (But no promises..)

Happy New Year to all, and to all a good night!

@ETHproductions so what you're saying is, I might eventually pass you? :P

how do I do this string thing?

@HelkaHomba cool, thanks

(cause I'm irresponsible)

4:25 AM
I don't care, just wondering if I should try to stay up

@ETHproductions G'night and happy New Year!

@wat The form closed in February, so... :P

@DJMcMayhem That wasn't my point, but yeah :P

wat
@Doorknob D:

So much pressure :S

4:26 AM
@Doorknob I thought that was replying to the later message >_> and was saying "yeah, I thought I was a monkey when I looked in the mirror"

Oh, well yeah, that too.

@ETHproductions Happy New Year, good night :D

30 minutes.

> BREAKING NEWS: With 2017 coming on, the knob has admitted he confused himself with a monkey at first sight

When do time capsule for next year start?
I want to add a 🍳.

4:30 AM
That's not ASCII though.

I don't even know what symbol it is! (I probably need a better font)

Can I add a \xFF?

That's not ASCII either.

printable ascii

ASCII goes from \x00 to \x7F. Any further than that, and you have to specify what code page you're using.

4:34 AM
I think ascii only goes to 127, then you're in extended ascii -ninja'd

@Doorknob See mail. Email should really support markdown

it already supports HTML, much to my dislike
interestingly, many mailing lists have adopted the "backquotes mean literal text / code samples" convention from Markdown, as there wasn't really one before
so Markdown has had something of an impact on email etiquette

So what you're saying is I can as a bell character, or a null byte. Which to choose...

(going the other way, Markdown stole its quote format from email)

LOL
cloudflare 90 min outage thanks to leap second bug

4:43 AM
you'd think most of the leap second bugs would have been ironed out by now
we've had enough of the things to give people some practice

Something as simple as a Leap Second Totalling multiple servers.
Nice.

@ais523 I suspect it's hard to actually test your product's reaction to leap seconds.
Probably also not really that cost-effective to plan for them. And who would think of them when looking at the lists of bugs and features?

I honestly think we should totally separate timekeeping from datekeeping
all computer programs should just work with time internally

The issue then is translating between computer time to human time.

that is, some monotonic increasing real value in some time unit (say, microseconds) since some epoch

4:50 AM
10 minutes.

ALL computer processing should be done on that

(Actually, that's basically how it works)

and then ONLY when it's presented to a human (say, as a date) we involve stuff like leap years, seconds, timezones, etc
@ATaco clearly it doesn't
NTP involves leap seconds

Here's a question, how do you keep track of literally every leap second ever?

not everything uses unix time

wat
4:51 AM
OMFG OMG I GOT TRIPLE MONITOR WORKING
WTF WTF WTF
This took me literally 2 months

@ATaco you update your date formatting library every time a new leap second is announced

Every time?
That seems very short term solution.

that's how it works

@ATaco There isn't really another option. Leap seconds aren't (and can't be) announced far in advance.

but really screw dates
just work with time

4:52 AM
Then again, I'm not properly investing in the fine details of computerized timekeeping, I'll leave it to the professionals.

@ATaco it's a disaster right now
like
a total disaster
writing an accurate datetime library is virtually impossible
4771
Q: Why is subtracting these two times (in 1927) giving a strange result?

FreewindIf I run the following program, which parses two date strings referencing times one second apart and compares them: public static void main(String[] args) throws ParseException { SimpleDateFormat sf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss"); String str3 = "1927-12-31 23:54:07"; ...

Probably because we base our progression of time on a rock pointlessly revolving around a burning ball of gas.

@ATaco consider the above question

how do I join in that time capsule string thing?

Too late.

4:57 AM
:(

I was out partying at the time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR UTC - 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I'M OUTTA HERE!

Happy New Years!
Bye!

@wat what is wrong with your computer that it took you two months to get a third monitor working?

I blame xorg.conf

5:02 AM
Woo New Year!

@DestructibleWatermelon To late for this year. Entries ended in January or something

dam
do you think there would be enough characters for good programs?

Wow that was a while ago

@HelkaHomba technically it's still January

5:16 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'll probably post the challenge tomorrow

I wonder how many lame forced challenges we'll get that somehow reference 2017 this year

@orlp, I'd wager on way to much, considering its a prime.

@HelkaHomba was Time Capsule string revealed already?

Not yet

:/ Cal's still in 2016

5:26 AM

Two and a half hours to go for me and wat.

Can we not onebox large gif for us on pay-per-byte :P

Is there a GIF equivalent to a zipbomb?

We do not need to find out :P

@PhiNotPi not sure with gifs, but there are exploits in some image formats that can do stuff like that

wat
5:47 AM
@Pavel I have three DVI monitors.
My GPU refuses to output

Has anyone else ever played/heard of the TIME Stories board game?

@wat are they normal HD monitor or like fancy4K

Hey good morning
Murica began entering 2017 right

6:05 AM
Happy new year for other CST folk :)

for my koth, each player creates their character, which is generated a bunch of times and placed on the map, so it's their team versus another. how many on each team?

@DestructibleWatermelon Confused... which koth?

maze koth
I should revamp the sandbox post

6:20 AM
Ah, I was trying to somehow fit this into 1D chess

@DestructibleWatermelon Link to sandboxes post?

sandbox has been unfeatured

wat
@Downgoat lower than full hd actually
1440x900

Woah, a 16:10 monitor

6:35 AM
what should the dimensions of the maze be....

512x512x512x512x512

...
no it will not be a 5-cube
could be fun for next koth maybe

Challenge idea: Collatz Conjecture steps for (1, 2**31)

Hmmm... surely someone has built a non-trivial 1 dimensional maze

6:56 AM
@betseg TYVM! \o/

Hmmm.... the more I search and not find this, the more I'm convinced that there's a potential interesting PPCG challenge idea in the concept of a 1-D maze

@HWalters there is exactly one 1d maze

Happy new year in MTZ

@DestructibleWatermelon Think outside the box. Add "blocks" and "warp points"...

that would not be a maze

7:05 AM
Why not?

and that would just be mapping to a 2d maze probably

Well, topologically speaking, think of a string... that's one dimensional...
...but you can imagine the string's all tangled onto itself
And yes, you can map this to 2D

hmmm, now that I think of it, I guess it wouldn't

But think of it this way... take any maze, and you may have "corridors" you run down...
...after running down a fair bit, you hit a point where you need to make a decision of which way to go... a "decision point"

I'm no longer interested

7:08 AM
In arbitrary dimensions, you might have n different choices
That n can be represented in bits; and those bits can be mapped to sets of two choices at a time
So, yeah, it maps to 2D, but it probably also maps to any number of dimensions

I don't think there is any way you could call it a maze though

Why not?

its a line
and also its also got teh warps and stuff

It's a puzzle where you have to find one of many possible paths to reach a goal point

it's not intuitively a maze (1d), not technically a maze (teleports)

7:12 AM
Warps are no different than corridors along another dimension

Happy New year UTC-7!
(I'm only slightly late)

@HWalters nope
let me provide a counterexample

Well try this... you said it yourself... it's a puzzle that's equivalent to a 2D maze

I realised it wasn't
       /-------\
      / /-----\ \
----X-CVZ--x-vz--c
    \______/
can't connect v and V

Why not?
Unless you're simply arguing that the space of possible 1D mazes with warp points is more complex than the space of possible 2D mazes without them?

7:19 AM
@DJMcMayhem ninja'd

@HWalters yes I am. You actually can't connect them
@HWalters as in you can't connect them together
without going through one of the lines

I think you can on a torus
But I'm not sure that's the point... there's no 2D maze you can make that has no 1D equivalent
Where you're allowed warp points
When I talk about "a puzzle equivalent to a 2D maze", I'm talking about actually mapping a 2D maze onto a 1D maze
The mapping I'm thinking of, by the way, leaves you with exactly two ways to go... forward and back (I'm not thinking of "optional warp points")

7:39 AM
20 minutes until UTC-8!
That's the last one in which codegolfers live, represented by me and wat.

Hello
Does anyone know Java/Processing here?

I know Java.
Kind of.

10 minutes remaining!

@Pavel not just you
>_>
a lot of people here live in PST

Just got my first ever gold badge! \o/

7:54 AM
@DLosc Congrats!

Thanks! :D

happy pst new year!
@Pavel it's time

Happy new year to everyone from UTC-8 and Seattle!
@wat is time!

it's 12:02 bruh
@Pavel ...seattle is utc-8

8:18 AM
Yes
At the actual instant I had to like do things with family, photos and stuff. Was a bit late because if it.
I said Seattle because that's where me and wat live, and afaik were the only ones in UTC-8

@Pavel did I enter you in the timezone census?...

@Dennis Would you say this is a fair description of Jelly?

I'm officially back!! \o/

@zyabin101 care to help a bit more with the maze koth?

@DestructibleWatermelon Aye.

8:29 AM
I'm kind of unsure of my original idea now

That's weird. I got the Snapchat hat even though I answered the question almost 2 hours after the question was asked

Anonymous
@Sherlock9 The hats have been pretty buggy

Well, I'm happy to have the hat, at any rate
@Doorknob I forget. Did I submit a character? I don't think I did

Anonymous
I had to accept the fact that my hat collection is coming to an end

Anonymous
There's only a few more I'll be able to reasonably acquire on PPCG (epiphany, philanthropist, and maybe ragged, fiery, and maverick)

8:45 AM
@zyabin101 no, what's that?

It's a census of timezones of PPCG users.

Oh, well I'm UTC-8

@Pavel You're now added!

Found out with the editor main part: set a rule for the editor class
With the UI, change the workspace class

@zyabin101 please add me to UTC-8

@wat You're now added!
:D

9:34 AM
Got in here with Atom.
Pane Browser is too dumb to cooperate, so I returned to Firefox. :-(

We forgot to celebrate UTC-9
Oops.

I'm sure all of the Alaska residents remembered
@Mego In Actually, how do you do reduced Cartesian product over a list of three lists?

Okay, I never awaited so few contributions on this repo.
It's like, "we're lazy and you're lazy, too, so don't be lazy".
I intended it to be for people to participate, too.
So, should I rather leave this repo dead, forever, or make people participate, as the repo was intended to?

Q: Reposts of answer-chaining challenges

Those are inherently different if they were run multiple times. Imagine if the challenge Add a language to ...

@zyabin101 Please could I make a request to your Royal Highness to add myself to your Honorable Census Spreadsheet, I'm in time zone... well you can guess.

UTC exactly?

Yes
I was trying to do a British accent

10:20 AM
You can't really accent online.

@Pavel Ah dink ya can.

@zyabin101 what's the time zone census for?

@zyabin101 utc+0h

@Pavel IDK -.(._.).-
At the very least we know when the various members of PPCG are available.

10:27 AM
Somewhere down the line, someone will use it for the basis of a challenge.
I guarantee it.

@muddyfish You're now added!

@Dennis is it intentional that the showcase says "This thread is open and unlocked" when it's still locked, or did someone update it too early? :D

is it intentional that the sandbox isn't featured anymore?

The feature tag gets cleared every month automatically
It has to be manually re added, usually by Dennis.

I know, it's just been more than a day and I hadn't noticed it going before

10:34 AM
Well,I think 2017 is an OK excuse to forget to update it for a day.
