On another note, I'm really liking this Google Home thing. Can't wait until Minibits gets back with his new Echo Dot so we can battle it out.
@Geobits You mean like youtu.be/t-7mQhSZRgM?t=17s ?
I dunno. On one hand, Googke Home seems SciFi come true. On the other hand, the idea of having an electronic device constatntly listening to what I'm saying creeps me out.
I dunno about "scifi come true", at least not yet. I mean, it's cool and all, and it's definitely a step in that direction, but it's still pretty limited. I'm very interested to see what updates it gets over time.
@Geobits Irirrouw.dimj oh w or n t hr. e;sgelfaoe?
Argh, my FF is leaking memory
Anonymous
@LegionMammal978 I haven't played any MP yet
23:14
@Dennis At least this is an electronic device that informs you up front that it's listening to everything you say (so it's opt in...).
@Mego I find it much more interesting
@LegionMammal978 That's a common trope in FF games. Terra, Cloud, Tidus, Squall... they all have memory issues.
@Geobits I blame Wikia
Just looked at the Google Home thing, isn't it just improved Siri?
@Geobits nice subtle hat
@trichoplax Thanks. I like it :D
@LegionMammal978 Technology almost always advances in "improvements".
23:18
@LegionMammal978 I think it can connect (at least more easily?) to smart home stuff like thermostats/locks/lights
@Geobits I know, but wouldn't we already have it by iOS 12 or 13?
@HelkaHomba See ^
In a sense, it is. I used to use my phone for a lot of things I use it for. This way, anybody in the house can use it, without having to worry about where the phone is, what's on your hands, etc. It's more convenient by far.
@Geobits is its range that good?
It's in my living room, and I can use it anywhere downstairs, at least.

My wife's family has an Amazon Echo. They really enjoy it.
23:20
@Geobits Hmm... can you ask it for the time?
@LegionMammal978 Yes
@LegionMammal978 I guess, but Android fans like a Google option. Market diversity is good anyhow
@Geobits +578345.34 internal rating points
@LegionMammal978 What makes you think iOS would add a feature that someone else didn't invent a few years ago? :P
@Geobits It will have been invented a few years ago by then. :P
23:22
@LegionMammal978 It gets more points for correctly answering "how do you evolve a piplup?" to me :P

@Geobits Level 16
@Geobits +10^10^10^100 internal rating points
@Mego I asked it just now, since I wasn't sure about 14. Turns out it's 16 after all lol
@Geobits Will it do "Add 'milk' to my Google Keep shopping list" correctly?
Anonymous
@Geobits I realized my mistake shortly after sending that and fixed it
23:24
@HelkaHomba Yes. I tried that with eggs, anyway. I assume it would work for milk. You can say "add milk to my shopping list" or "remind me to buy milk".
Anonymous
Naturally, I know Piplup/Prinplup/Empoleon :P
@Geobits keep?
@Geobits But where do you access the list? (without getting a bunch of individual reminders)
On your phone like normal
It syncs to your google account
Can you ask it for your current shopping list?
23:25
"what's on my shopping list?" seems to work for that
Google = magic confurmed
> confurmed
@HelkaHomba Ok, after testing just now, it definitely goes to keep right away. While looking at my list in keep (it's labeled "google assistant shopping list" by default), I added an item through Home and it shows up withn a second or two.
@Geobits nifty
Can you ask it to smite evil
23:29

@Geobits To the dumpster it goes
Let us never speak of this Google Home again
23:31
Next joke it told:
> What do you call someone who points out the obvious? Someone who points out the obvious
Thanks, Captain Obvious
@quartata btw I got antichamber

@ConorO'Brien A++ game
it is ! :D

I should play it again

"Ok Google, let me talk to ELIZA" starts up an ELIZA chatbot, straight from the golden age.
@Geobits Can you say "Display my phone screen on my tv" (you may need chromecast?)
Yeah, it syncs up to any chromecasts on the same wifi (if you want it to).
I'm not sure about other types of "smart" tv stuff, though.
My most used features so far (besides asking it weird questions just to see what it says) are playing music and setting short timers though.
Can it set multiple timers?
Yeah

Q: The broken window of "Produce the number 2014 without any numbers in your source code"

xnorProduce the number 2014 without any numbers in your source code is our highest-voted question. It regularly inspires newcomers to pose similar challenges, which get heavily downvoted with the poster pointed to Do X without Y. I can't blame a new user for using this question as a model. The top ...

23:43
It takes a nicely wide variety of phrasings, too. "Tell me when it's been ten minutes", "Let me know when it's half past five", "Wake me up at seven", etc.
I haven't tried repeated alarms yet, though. Like "every weekday at 6:45". I'll have to test that out.
Can it combine different abilities? Like "Wake me when it stops raining"
"Tell me when it's been e^pi minutes"
@trichoplax Haven't tried that yet, so I'm not sure. I know my phone can do "remind me to call my Mom when I get home", so I assume it would work for at least some things.
"Upload this picture to facebook in 24 hours unless you hear otherwise."
@trichoplax However, it does not work with "tell me a joke at 6:50". It just tells it right away :(
23:48
@NewMetaPosts A downvote on "can we do something". Interesting.
@Geobits What happens if you tell it that this sentence is false?
@Geobits I've known humans like that...
@trichoplax well, i am basically saying "yes, it's a broken window"
@LegionMammal978 Great. Now it exploded and my living room is on fire. Be back later...
@trichoplax i'm never sure on these posts whether to save my opinion for an answer and leave it totally open
23:49
"Downvote all PPCG questions whose title matches the regex /Do .*? without .*?/"
@xnor It seemed open enough to avoid downvotes to me, but I guess not to someone...
@HelkaHomba I think you could golf that by just looking for anything with "without" in the title.
> Do <random, valid operation> on "do X without Y" posts!

@trichoplax Some people just downvote anything. In fact, there's one such person here right now :P
23:53
@Mego Wasn't me this time :P
Is there a way to make a pure SE login credential? Not share passwords with Google/Yahoo/etc
Anonymous
@HelkaHomba Yep
Aww, it straight up ignored me when I said "Ok, Google, downvote everything on ppcg.se"

You still need an email of course, but it wouldn't use OAuth
Anonymous
That's actually how DataBot is set up
Anonymous
23:55
That way the other people who work(ed) on DataBot can access the account if need be without having access to the email account I used to set it up
@Mego How? I'm editing my account at Edit Profile -> My Logins -> add more logins... and I only see third party options like Google and Facebook. No plain SE login
Anonymous
@HelkaHomba Oh you mean for an existing account. I don't know if there's a way to do that.
@HelkaHomba I think when you sign up
yeah
Anonymous
You could generate an OpenID specifically for SE
Anonymous
23:58
Out of curiosity, why do you want to do this?
