I kinda want to make a Puzzling puzzle

I started making one
but it was too hard so far
Do you know that the challenge (grid maneuvering) is always possible?

@DestructibleWatermelon How so?
I don't know why people downdooted me though
Would be nice to leave a comment
Hello?

Ah
But who's the other downdooter?
Edited

I can't revert my vote ;_;

@Qwerp-Derp Is it provably possible? Like how it is unproven every even integer greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes

Ummm

(goldbach conjecture)

IDK

yeaaah
you probably should work on that first

9:27 AM
For some reason no one commented in the sandbox
I placed it there for two days

Sandbox is semi useless

With "skips" it should be possible

TBH it's more about people thinking about their own idea
Also I never said it was impossible

It's basically a case of this:

Post on one of those math sites?

9:29 AM
Find an equation using only +-*/ where 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 = 1 fits
(Left-associative)

or how about Puzzling.SE: Two birds with one stone

Yes, it is possible
You can just repeatedly stack nenenenenene over and over as many times as you like
and then you generate numbers

Anything exciting happen while I wasn't here?

9:44 AM
@DestructibleWatermelon Oh?

no ._. I lied
IDK actually
maybe
but not that I know of

@Dennis Can you pull Charcoal? Thanks!
Okay so I'm not on my own laptop, meaning I need a small project to work on
I could work on Charcoal but no vim = ;_; medium-sized projects are a pain

I really dislike Python but I still use it though

You still haven't apologised (\ ōnō)\
I'd use lisp but I procrastinate to much to finish learning it

@DestructibleWatermelon no

no?
@ASCII-only have you used lisp?

@DestructibleWatermelon Nope

get out

Is it balanced? I'm not sure
But that's what you have to deal with in Lisp

@Qwerp-Derp Run it in Brain-Flak to test
@DestructibleWatermelon Yeah I know, I've seen lots of really readable lisp

@Qwerp-Derp YOU USE F****** WHITE SPACE LIKE IN EVERY LANGUAGE LIKE A SANE PERSON

kk it works
@DestructibleWatermelon Sozza, read too much XKCD about Lisp
Too much "propaganda"
But it dissuades me from Lisp

Just a random garble of characters TBH

It seems like lisp is a lot like nuclear power: everyone discounts it before they even know what it is, or what it's like, because they don't understand it
statistically nuclear power is safe power
safer than fossil fuels, hydro, solar, wind

And then when Lisp explodes it's a lot like nuclear bombs as well
except there's parens everywhere instead of waste

and people let their fear of what happens when used incorrectly that they believe the whole thing is bad

@DestructibleWatermelon ok i am very sorry for disliking koth i just think koth = too much work (like all code golf)

9:55 AM
I'm supposed to be doing homework or some crap
so things that need to be done:
ah, you know what

Lisp is like Haskell etc. (and most other non-C-derived languages) - it's so much harder to learn that most people don't bother putting the effort in
@DestructibleWatermelon ?

@DestructibleWatermelon yup

@mınxomaτ Whoops, sorry, too used to seeing golfy Perl :P

If you don't use macros, lisp is basically Python with a funky syntax.
(Or some other similar language)
If you do use macros, all hell breaks loose.

"If you don't use <feature>, <language a> is basically <language b> with funky syntax" generally applies to most languages anyway.

for any TC language A, and TC language b?

Qwerp-DerpBriefing: You are a bot, in a 2D grid that extends infinitely in all four directions, north, south, east and west. You can make all of the numbers
But it'll be hard to optimise
@Angs But is it a good challenge?

@Qwerp-Derp It's very interesting. It definitely requires a heuristic so there's a lot of room for competition

I like how Visual Studio for Mac runs on macOS, Android, and iOS.

One of these things is not like the other ...

1:57 PM
I can't imagine it being a pleasant experience on iOS

Granted using Visual Studio is often not a pleasant experience on Windows

VS is not a pleasant experience anywhere it can go

Looking at the elections chat room for too long will damage your neurons

I like VS.. :/

“Looking at the elections chat room for too long will damage your neurons” is also true

2:00 PM
VS feels like I feel after eating too much barbecue

Is that because install size is 53GB for everything? :P

VS base is heavier than TF2 srs

VS is heavier than a lot of games
If you install absolutely every feature

Can't play. I've never used VS.

Anonymous
VS is incredibly bloated. Trying to start it takes about a minute. It has a ton of features, but you don't need 80% of them.

2:04 PM
Java C# is slow.

@Mego What kind of machine are you developing on? VS 2015 takes less than ten seconds to start on a three year old processor and solid state drive.

> SSD

VS used to be slow for me, but they've done some major speed boosts

Anonymous
@Rainbolt HDD. I don't have an SSD in my development machine yet.

Well there's your problem

2:08 PM
any other IDE takes way more time IMO

SSDs are ultra expensive

I mean, not really

I understand if you are in high school or college, but if you are coding for a living, you can afford an SSD

You don't need a big one for everything especially if you're on a desktop
OS and most-used software would probably fit on a 240GB drive for most people
(I wouldn't put games on one personally so maybe I'm different that way)

Anonymous
@Rainbolt Sure, but I would also have to replace my PSU (since it only has one port for drives for some reason)

Anonymous
2:10 PM
And if I'm doing that, I may as well just replace the whole computer

Anonymous
And that gets expensive

And anyway I am on a laptop so adding a SSD is not really easy

its pretty easy on most laptops

I am surprised they still make laptops with spinning parts

I did it on mine that I'm using right now

2:11 PM
Considering they move and tilt so much

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Why this even exists

@TuxCopter Because Reddit

@Mego Why does a new PSU and SSD mean a whole new computer? Both of them would cost like $120.

Anonymous
@Shebang Because if I'm replacing the PSU and the hard drive, I might as well replace my motherboard (which is starting to have issues)

2:18 PM
@Mego Ah, so in your specific case

@TuxCopter idfk
but it's amazing

Anonymous
And a 250GB SSD + a 650W PSU is like $170-$180

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Cats. In tongs. Wow lol.

Kingston 240GB SSD is $64 + Thermaltake 80+Gold 650W PSU is $61 is $125
Or a Corsair 650W that's 80+ gold is $50 putting you at $115

@Mego I'm flabbergasted at that. Power supplies I use usually have so many damn extra cords the cable management is a nightmare.

Anonymous
2:24 PM
@TimmyD Oh, mine has plenty of extra cords. They're just useless (for me).

This is my current case + PSU

@EriktheGolfer Regarding your sandbox post

2:39 PM
Yeah, I read the comments.

Take
XXX
_X_
__X
If you only look at X then this board is valid
because it could be that the previous board is
_XX
_X_
__X
And in general it will be true for any board that I can think of if you ignore the other player

I do not mean only look at the X, I think you haven't understood the challenge well.

So it makes no sense to me to check the validity for one player
Show me a situation which is valid for X and invalid for O

The one player thing is who starts the game, not who to only check. This is because the starter must have 5 of their marks in the board, while the opponent must have 4. Not something more than that.

I still don't get it
You never say in your post who is supposed to start

2:43 PM
Haven't I included the word "starter"?

Just show me an example that is valid for X and invalid for O and explain to me
this will be simpler

Basically, any example valid for X will be invalid for O, since X will have 5 marks and O will have 4 marks. For X, it is valid, because they have 5 marks, and in positions that could be played in. For O, it is invalid, because after the fourth X, it will be O's turn, but instead a fifth X is on the board.
Example:
X__ XO_ XOX XOX XOX XOX XOX XOX XOX
___ ___ ___ __O __O __O __O O_O OXO
___ ___ ___ ___ __X _OX XOX XOX XOX

What would the output be if it's valid for one player starting and not the other? I assumed the challenge was "is this board possible" at all, and only a single truthy/falsey value.

I don't see how your example is invalid for O

It's when O is the starting player that it is invalid.

2:49 PM
"Given a tic-tac-toe board in any format, determine if it is valid or not"
If we are not given who starts it makes no sense

It makes sense if the question is "is it valid for any (not all) starting player?"

"Who starts" is not input, it's hardcoding, which I am strong against. That's why I have included the bonus, which will probably become a necessity.

@Fatalize It doesn't matter who went first
You are to output if the board can be a valid board, not whether it is a valid board.

2:52 PM
@Rainbolt That's the crux of the bonus. In general I'd agree though.

Oh, I only read the main challenge
I'll shut up now

@Rainbolt Then there's no point in separating players

@Geobits Also, did you do the Halloween avatar again?

It was forced upon me.

Oh, well, make the bullies shut up, if it's against your will. It's your avatar, you do what you want with it. The only limit is that it must not be appropriate.

It was a joke. I changed it and I'm fine with it.
I dared Dennis to get 25 stars, and he did. So I held up my end :)

@Dennis If you want feedback, I'll do it in the TIO chatroom. Be there.

3:04 PM
I definitely like the right one over the others, yeah.

Based on Calvin's on/off suggestion.

@Yodle Take something completely unrelated to anything else. I took a Greek Mythology class my last semester (I double-majored Math and Computer Science). It was a blast.

@EriktheGolfer Posting feedback in the TIO room is a good idea. It's hard to keep track of everything that has been said in TNB.

someone have a link to that room

I wanted to take Artificial Intelligence at my university, but it's a 500-level class I don't have the prereqs for yet.

@PhiNotPi I took an intro to AI course which was pretty cool.

3:12 PM
my AI class was actually pretty boring. I knew the majority of the concepts from this site
also, I really wanted to take compilers, but they only had 4 people sign up for the class, so I never got to take it

Nov 6 '15 at 21:48, by TimmyD
@PeterTaylor Reminds me of my graduate-level (i.e., above Bachelor's) Operating Systems class at a university. Professor asked how many students had installed an OS from scratch, and I was the only person to raise my hand.

Yeah a lot of the algorithms we talked about were covered briefly in earlier courses, but some of the later stuff was interesting. Our project was to predict the weather at our college using a neural network.
@TimmyD I took our undergrad OS course, and now I'm gonna be taking the next 2 courses in that branch: comp architecture and systems programming. Systems programming is a group project type class where we've gotta basically build an OS from scratch, which sounds awesome.

If you want an interesting class that's a bit difficult analysis of algorithms was ok

@Poke Already took that, required for cs :P

oh yeah

3:19 PM
There are 67 sections of freshman writing seminar...

@Yodle Oh, that does sound neat. One of my classes (I don't remember which) we built a filesystem from scratch. My group created ElephantFS, a filesystem with built-in diff, so that you can automatically go back to any version of any file.

@Geobits That's hilarious

woah
there's a numberphile sequence that isn't on OEIS

One of these times, I'm gonna have to invent my own conspiracy theory to ask about on skeptics
> My neighbor has a mustache and a German accent. Is he a time-traveling Hitler from the past, here to take over America now?

3:23 PM
@TimmyD Nice, yeah i think a rudimentary filesystem is part of what we have to do too.
