@GamrCorps Are you alive?

@wat If this is related to PPCG, tell a moderator and we'll determine whether any moderator intervention is necessary. If it's IRL... I dunno, insert some elder advice here.

The main problem is that people take close votes personally, and act like they are some sort of personal attack. In reality, it's the opposite of that.

@DrMcMoylex right, but Alex was saying that we need to comment because the close vote text doesn't match the site. I think we'll need comments no matter what the close vote text is

Oh, good point

@AlexA. Since you haven't answered yet, can you do Group A, second time?

@Mego You got 21 downvotes in two one-minute windows. I don't think I have to.

@Dennis Lol, I was certain it was serial voting, but I don't know if mods are allowed to confirm or deny that.

@AlexA. no, IRL

I think you only log on when I sleep

@wat there is no way of doing that, unfortunately. The new generation is very disrespectful. I blame their facebook and that snapchat thingy.

Probably. You Europeans are always sleeping at weird times. (At least from an American's perspective.)

Well I often see El'endia and Mego when I wake up. That's probably because they go to sleep at 4 am though

I totally have a regular, reasonable sleep schedule. Totally. It's the most regular and reasonable sleep schedule ever. I fall asleep when I get tired and then I wake up later.

@Zizouz212 we have a nice proverb for that in turkish: istisnalar kaideyi bozmaz :)

@Zizouz212 that proverb stands for "exceptions don't change the outcome", I'm also part of this generation, but I don't really see myself as fitting into a generation that doesn't listen, relate, understand which rely on physical and social powers a lot.

> If they are allowed to follow their own schedules, e.g. sleeping from 3:00 am to 12:00 noon, their sleep is improved and they may not experience excessive daytime sleepiness.
That's the sleep schedule I had last winter.

@NathanMerrill I don't quite get what you're asking, could you provide an example?

@El'endiaStarman that's the schedule I had last summer. It was amazing
nowadays I have too much daytime sleepiness and it doesn't help with classes :/

10:16 PM
I had 3:00 AM-9:00 PM for a while. That was nice

@NathanMerrill @El'endiaStarman there is also "falls" (meaning "if"), but just using "wenn" is more common.

@flawr If he will jump, then I'll pay him 5 dollars, vs. If he had jumped, then I would have paid him 5 dollars

I had an idea: let's "bury" a time capsule for ourselves in the future.

you'd just use "wenn" in both of those cases (with different tenses)
although you could use "falls" with the former

wait, you conjugate "wenn", or you would simply conjugate the verbs?

10:17 PM
conjugate the verbs
just like you do in English
"Falls/Wenn er springt, geb ich ihm 5 Dollar." and "Wenn er gesprungen wäre, hätte ich ihm 5 Dollar gegeben."

ah, so its more like "When" doesn't exist

well if you use the former with "wenn" then it can also so mean "when" (i.e. "as soon as he jumps, ...")
kinda depends on context in that case
it can definitely be ambiguous

ok. So you'd basically find two definitions in the dictionary under "Wenn"
gotcha :P

Das German Byte

they use octet in german?

10:49 PM
Agreed. Platte is either a vinyl record or a bald head.

Cool, so basically random, unrelated things have the same word in German

hahaha

@mınxomaτ depends on the country:) here it is "Die Platte"

@MartinEnder I remember this comment fo yours:
I just wanted to congratulate you on how well-balanced your scoring is. When code challenges mix two quantities into one score the balance is almost always off such that the best answer will just optimise one of the scores without having to consider the other one at all. The cubic weight of the number of languages was perfect here... while it was always possible to add another language it was always a very nice (but doable) challenge to do so in the number of bytes available. :) — Martin Ender ♦ Dec 5 '15 at 23:49
Any thoughts on the score function here?

Q: Code golf a random orthogonal matrix

LembikAn orthogonal matrix is a square matrix with real entries whose columns and rows are orthogonal unit vectors (i.e., orthonormal vectors). @LuisMendo The rule about builtins that generate orthogonal matrices is so subjective...

@flawr lol

I'd say If you are not a U.S. citizen or not eligible to vote, then, before answering this challenge, do the U.S. a favor by telling anyone you know who is an eligible citizen to go out and vote if they haven't already. does consider those other 194 countries >:I codegolf.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/34739

@LuisMendo Ok not subjective, more like destructive, you can't use most of the matlab functions.

@flawr I see an answer that uses Gram-Schmidt. Isn't that the same as QR?

And politically motivated != civically motivated.
Sorry, that was just irking me. :D

@LuisMendo Well gram schmidt can be used to generate a qr decomposition.
In that sense it is basically the same.

10:59 PM
@flawr They are only approximately so :-P
@flawr Oh, but it's done manually in that answer. That's why it's allowed :-/

@HelkaHomba To be fair that part is now useless since voting is over

But that wasn't the complaint, they left the first line.

The first line is basically "here is why I post this challenge"
the second part clutters the challenge at this point

In other news: Snowden did a live interview with startpage.com. The recording can be watched here: youtu.be/FwOIgOH_S18?t=2265

also, sure it's civically motivated but that doesn't mean it has to be in the challenge description either
would fit more as a comment

that's not because they invented it that they're in the top countries at it

Unrelated note, does anyone know if there's a Python 3 equivalent of the Visual C++ Compiler for Python 2.7?

11:45 PM
> Visual C++ Compiler for Python 2.7
What?

Or do I need to bust out a full Visual Studio install for compiling wheels

@quartata You only need the Build Tools for compiling. VS is just the IDE.

@mınxomaτ I don't remember if that was the name but there was a version of the tool chain for building Python binary dists that was really small

You know you can trust minxomat on this because he's a real, live Windows user. Just when we thought they had gone extinct.

11:47 PM
@quartata There are dozens of us!

Dozens!

Literally a few!

But I don't know how MSVC is related to Python. Unless you are talking about IronPython.

@mınxomaτ Granted, you run everything. Don't you have a room full of computers with basically every OS known to man?

@AlexA. They are mainly running linux. A small number runs different versions of Windows as a test server.

11:50 PM
You also have a Hackintosh, right?

I'm slowly moving all my setups to servers and clients.
@AlexA. Also in KVM now.

I find this mildly disappointing

Virtualized servers and thin clients.
A 2x6 (2x12 thread) core Intel server (stocked with memory and HDDs) is just about $400 now. That's much cheaper for me in the long run than keeping all these PCs.
I'm also cancelling many of my hosted servers, since I now have a fibre connection :-)

Oh shit, is it Google Fiber?

No.

11:55 PM
Oh, okay.

It's actually a MLVPN connection of a 250/150 fibre, one 100/5 VDSL and two 50/50 4G.

I don't understand any of those acronyms
or numbers

The numbers are MBps
Down/Up
I use a MLVPN server to bond these connections. The actual traffic egresses over an exit node (also a MLVPN server) in a German data centre. So this gives me 400/200 -ish usually, with some failover.

MLVPN = Mary's Little Very Pretty Norbert?
