Arbitrary depth arrays ftw
(at least I can't on ff49, on ubuntu 16.04lts)
@arda y?
@WheatWizard So if you have two numbers that are not positive, then you want it to put an arbitrary value on the stack?
@TuxCopter the vote button doesn't work.
wut
@VTCAKAVSMoACE Pointers FTW FTFY
20:00
@arda shoulda seen mine - W7, WX, WXP both ironically and not, plus Debian and Ubuntu.
@feersum Thats what I thought, however thats not what I originally wrote. So this will not prevent you from receiving the bounty.
@ArtOfCode wxp ironically, w10, ubuntu on home stuff, ubuntu server, windows server 2012 r2, raspbian on server stuff.
@TuxCopter Still it's pretty clever for what I'm using it for IMO.
The program is undefined for values less than one
20:01
Does Dennis' solution do that?
I don't want to claim it if that's the only reason it's longer.
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Unrelated
And look like a bad ad lol
@feersum It does
@arda that's a point, I hadn't considered the server versions
A modified version of your solution could probably still beat dennis
Deb and Ubuntu servers, then
20:02
@arda how big is your disk
13
I didn't mark server ones on poll
You think?
@betseg One letter away from disaster.
@betseg 120gb.
20:02
I can't imagine testing the sign of two numbers in only a few bytes.
^^ beatufiul
@mınxomaτ I too misread it at first.
@mınxomaτ wp
@feersum Yes your solution has quite a gain on his
@mınxomaτ Totally not how I read it at all.
20:03
Preventing infinite loop for negative would have a huge cost.
@feersum It works fine for negative numbers you just break stack cleanliness on zero
It does not work for negative numbers.
Specifically, when exactly one is negative.
Oh yes
neither does dennis'
now that I check
Oh Dennis' is not stack-clean outside domain either?
I feel OK then.
20:05
@betseg 120gb samsung evo 650 ssd. I have all those 3 installed, and a bunch of huge programming stuff and I still have like 40-50 gb free. I always put stuff I don't always need to my hard drive. Games on physically connected one, music and videos on raspberry pi NAS.
@feersum very nice work by the way
Thanks
both nas and physically connected hdds are 1tb drives.
@mınxomaτ :/
I run the server stuff on cloud VMs and well, on a raspberry pi, hence I have space on my ssd.
20:07
Does it make sense to describe something as insignificant but non-negligible? For example, Gary Johnson is one of four candidates running for President, and he is projected to get something like 4% of the votes. That's insignificant, but not almost zero (i.e., non-negligible).
Whoa Dennis only uses 1 stack.
@feersum unlikely.
Lol so much context.
He probably has hidden other accounts from settings.
WTF that message has 3 starts?
20:08
anyone here work at apple?
> 3 starts
100000/10
Oops
haha man you should totally rest a bit.
Question: If I had a question about theoretical implementation, should I post on Programmers.SE or StackOverflow.SE?
Autocorrect
20:09
One more typo and you'll become a meme :P
@betseg ah, autocorrect is the worst.
@arda This status has already been achieved.
Nice.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE More specifically, Downgoat is already that meme. :P
20:11
@VTCAKAVSMoACE iphone is the worst
So is android

Question: If I had a question about theoretical implementation, should I post on Programmers.SE or StackOverflow.SE?
And I'm number 1! What a surprise! I'm honored!
20:12
Theoretical implementation, as in you would never want to use this algorithm in real life?
@feersum As in, I may use it in the future/am using it currently, but have no issue with it (while others may (such as CS professor))
More of a discussion on its correctness, conventionality, and general not-terribleness.
I'm thinking Programmers.SE.
I have no idea what you're getting at.
20 hours ago, by TuxCopter
My keyboard is forked brb
Objectively the best autocorrect fail
@feersum I'll just put it on Programmers. :P
@TuxCopter Borked + fucked.
20:14
Programmers.SE is no more
My keyboard doesn't have like 5 keys
Dont game on laptop keyboard, kids.
@TuxCopter WHAT
Now it's SoftwareEngineering.se
@arda Don't game on use laptop keyboard, kids.
whatever, I have w key in clipboard 24-7. I'll take over the autocorrect leaderboard.
20:16
I only have laptop keyboard ;______;
@Geobits hey, writing code while lying down on bed is nice.
Laptop keyboards are nice IMO, not for gaming tho.
Yes
^^^
so much yes
20:16
I've yet to find one I liked. Granted, I like mechanical keyboards, so...
I want to replace this so I can at least use like 1/4 of the keys when I'm not home, but man, paypal leaving turkey really hurt me on that matter.
@Geobits I see @ASCII-only has corrupted you, hmmm...
I use laptop keyboard for gaming because I don't have games supporting a gamepad...
Remember when I spilled coke on my laptop? I was on my bed :/
Hahaha I spilled coffee on my laptop
20:17
I have a GameCube controller adapter. None of my games support it :(
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Probably not. I might have been using them since he was in grade school or longer :P
I was on desk though
I don't drink coke and I don't drink coffee
(took me a lengthy cleaning, but pc survived, and smelled awakening for months)
Nothing can happen to my laptop then?
20:18
@TuxCopter water.
@arda My motherboard died :/
haha being broke really helps
I've had a cup of milk or water next to or near my laptop pretty much every day for several years with nary a mishap. I'm good at not spilling liquids. :P
@betseg I'm sorry to hear that. Is your fatherboard taking it okay?
Ugh
20:19
^^
you can't afford to have your motherboard die :P
@Geobits Woah, pun out of the blue! :P
It seemed like azure thing.
20:21
Are we restarting sea puns?
@TuxCopter No, that ship has sailed.
oh no
Are you doing puns?
20:22
Plz stop
@arda Frequently.
Geobits gets high on them, it seems.
The char room should be renamed to TNP: The Nineteenth Pun
tempted to unstar the room :P
@arda Once in a whale ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
20:23
@betseg get out
Sorry
Meh, whatever, you have a twitter account, @betseg ?
@El'endiaStarman What?? I said we weren't doing puns though :(
@Geobits I sea what you did there.
I can't help it if there's a very common sea-based idiom that expresses it perfectly.
20:25
@TuxCopter more like the umpteenth pun
The trash room always makes me feel like I'm littering. "Are you sure you want to leave Trash?"
@Geobits Water you doing in Trash anyway?
@arda I don't use it much, but @betseg_
...I blame autocorrect. *What're
@El'endiaStarman I peeked in to see what you were tossing earlier and forgot to leave.
@El'endiaStarman Uh huh. Suuuuuure.....
20:27

@Geobits Yes. I definitely have autocorrect on my laptop.

@PhiNotPi My name is VTC, and I approve this message.
Well, in Java, everything is horrible with memory.
20:28
@PhiNotPi Until he changes it to something NSFW...
@mınxomaτ I believe you guys were talking about not support SVG, well my coworker showed me this today: developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/…. I guess it's technically supported, but idunno
@feersum But particularly bad.
@El'endiaStarman Aww, I wouldn't do that. Now I would change it to an upvote icon every now and then.
@arda i read some of my old tweets... I should probably remove that account and open a new one ;_;
@betseg haha reminds me of me in 2012
I had tons of crappy tweets. Removed them all. By hand.
20:29
@betseg I feel like everyone has that reaction looking at stuff they wrote years before. Especially in the teen and young adult years.
Yeah, my stuff from four years ago is bad, but my stuff from 14 years ago is just terrible :D
It almost hurts to see middle-school-me try to talk cool.
@arda Dedication and self-loathing wrapped up into a nice little ball. :D
@VTCAKAVSMoACE I didn't know that was possible and it's beautiful.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE So the idea is that you have this tree, but the leaves of the tree are things that can't contain other elements, but have a vestigial empty array inherited from ArrayList?
20:31
@PhiNotPi I'm using it for a circuit mapping tool :D
@betseg I should remove my new ones.
I hate my life.
@feersum Yes.
Well, the vestigial empty array no doubt wastes some amount of memory.
@feersum Except the limbs of the tree can have many limbs therein.
But the fact that you have these methods/fields of the object that are never supossed to be used is the main code smell.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE What do you mean?
20:33
Defining an AND gate, for example: You can either abstractify it or you can deal with the individual CMOS chips and their inputs.
Or defining a gate which uses several kinds of gates, which, in turn, are composed of individual CMOS chips and their inputs.
Or defining a massive complex circuit made out of non-trivial gates, but still considering the circuit as one thing.
Well a list of sub-gates isn't sufficient to define a gate, since you would need to know how they are connected, etc.
What is the use of these lists?
@feersum That's part of the implementation that's not mentioned.
Has anyone seen (or able to find) a code golf challenge to make a linux-esque terminal? Like the post would require cd, ls, mkdir, etc functionality.
Traverse the tree and list the components you need to buy at the electronics store? :P
20:36
@feersum It's for a learning tool to show how a complex circuit could be mapped with its individual components. :)
@NickFrev No
AFAIK
@NickFrev Implement coreutils in an interactive shell?
@VTCAKAVSMoACE probably not all coreutils, but a select few
We've had challenges involving particular coreutils implementations, but not a shell with the implementations therein.
I was browsing my YTB recommandations and now I am making a bot to automatically downvote every video in my recommandations feed with the word top in the title >_>

CMP (chat mini poll): what's your current computer's uptime?
243 hours
Phone, 94 hours
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I can't know
(Windows)
a few minutes
Mine's under a week I'm sure. Since the last hurricane our power's been going out at least that often for a couple minutes at a time.
20:46
You can find out on windows I'm pretty sure
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC only 22 hours cuz of update
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC ~19 days and 14 hours
1 day and 5 hours (29 hours)
2 days 18 hours :(
I would answer this CMC, but subtracting current time - boot time is too much work <_<
20:47
Windows gives you the uptime in milliseconds via GetTickCount64
@mınxomaτ No thanks lol
14 hours
Huh, that's weird. lastlog shows my son's user has never logged in?
But he's currently logged in >_>
45 hours on phone
20:50
Oh, my phone's got 164 hrs
In PowerShell that's [timespan]::fromseconds([System.Environment]::TickCount / 1e3)
I just spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why my code changes suddenly broke 50 unit tests. Turns out the unit tests are wrapped in an #IFDEBUG compiler directive, and have been broken for months.
Well, no sense unbreaking them then :D
CMP: How much swap is being used on your computer?
20:51
None.
3.74 GB
Wow. @minxomat
None, because Mac.
@Geobits I was counting on them to tell me if my changes broke anything :(
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC 7 GB
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Mine's 296Kib. Pretty sure that's close enough to count as "none".
20:52
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC None
None, neither my phone nor my computer have swap.
@Rainbolt Well, just turn off the DEBUG and you have your answer >_>
@VTCAKAVSMoACE That makes no sense. OS X has a swap, called Virtual Memory.
@mınxomaτ :O This is news to me. (looks up how to find how much is being used)
I'd be concerned if mine was using much swap, considering I have 16GB ram and am doing basically nothing.
20:54
@VTCAKAVSMoACE vm_stat afaik
@Geobits I like that idea. Zero test coverage. 100% success!

Q: How many significant figures

DopappGiven a number as input, determine how many significant figures it has. This number will should be taken as a string because you have to do some special formatting. You'll see what I mean soon (I think). A digit is a sig-fig if: it is not a 0 it is between two non-0 digits it is between a dig...

Oh I found swap now: 383.0 MB used.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE activity monitor > "swap used"
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC That's where I found it. ;)
@Geobits I wouldn't count on it if you're using chrome
I regularly move all my tabs over to a new window
luckily chrome makes it easy with its dragging tabs to a new window thing
Even 16GB of memory can't handle Google Chrome
21:00
My current laptop has 2GB of RAM and handles Chrome just fine
My chrome is using less than 1GB now. I've seen it much higher, but I don't think I've ever seen it anywhere near 16.
@Geobits yeah that was more of a tongue-in-cheek remark
but chrome does go surprisingly high sometimes
It really does. Still better than FF though.
(overall, not memory-wise)
ಠ_ಠ
It's true.
21:03

@Geobits plus they're bringing material design over, its already in most of the chrome:// pages, it looks great

@Geobits excitement intensifies
@Geobits I meant desktop
21:05
@Maltysen Oh, I know. I'm just adding that :)
@Geobits oh cool
:)
Supposedly its goal is to "make it easier to use one-handed".
@Geobits ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Oh really?
Seriously.
@Geobits my FF is one gb, but I have a thousand suspended tabs
21:05
Actually.
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC [txt](lnk)
@mınxomaτ clutch?
Look it up.
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC I'm not sure suspended tabs really mean anything in this case. I could call my bookmarks "suspended tabs" if I wanted to :P
@Geobits basically tabs but "unloaded". No page rendered, no JS. But still using 1 GB. No other tabs.
I guess I just don't see the point of them. YMMV
My goal when buying ram was to not have to bother with all the little memory-saving tricks any more. It worked, because I haven't had ram issues in a long time.
21:10
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC As in, not shifting gears correctly, causing burning of grease within the clutch mechanism.
Mac Memory Pressure is a good measure of "Is my computer strounging for RAM?" it measures paging divided by ???. Much better than memory left.
"Memory Cleaners" just occupy a lot of memory to a) put unneeded stuff in swap b) force OS to reduce memory
This is so counter-intuitive to me. You mean to say that a gas flowing through a confined space goes faster when the space opens up?!
l.o.l.w.u.t.
@El'endiaStarman Well, if the space expands, gas moves to areas of low pressure. :P
Or am I misunderstanding what's going on there
@VTCAKAVSMoACE Generally, the flow of water in (large) rivers slows down when it empties into an ocean or sea. If you've ever used an air pump, you know that right where the air comes out, it's going fast, but further away, it's going slower.
21:19
Fun fact: A googolplex is a googol googol googol googol... (10^98 "googol"s) ...googol googol googols
@El'endiaStarman I know, but for relatively supersonic stuff, the particles moving at a relative 0 velocity cannot compress/decompress faster than the speed of sound, so by expanding the nozzle, don't you make a vacuum which pulls the gas out faster?
Wait no that logic doesn't work
@El'endiaStarman Taken to its logical conclusion, the air leaving a jet nozzle would reach c eventually. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen, so I think the wording might be odd here.
@El'endiaStarman mind = blown, will have to clean the gore :(
