@PhiNotPi 10/10 very subtle effect

@PhiNotPi 0/10 You should have rotated 90° instead

Well, in CSS, to { transform: rotate(360deg); } actually does something.

>_> I though @Dennis was ASCII-only with inverted avatar

@Downgoat You should increase the confusion and change you goats' colors to those of trichoplax's usual avatar.

:|
I will do this if @trichoplax changes avatar to correct red (#FD0D1B)

3:09 AM
@Downgoat Pretty sure his is just inverted

;_;

I tried inverting yours, but the resulting blue is a bit meh.

Help anyone are there any ASCII-art challenges that need non-symbols (ignore whitespace) as a literal?

Non-symbols?

Im sorry

3:13 AM
Much better.

@Dennis profile refresh?
thx
oh no, what have i done

Already had it open. :D

@Downgoat hey, trichoplax, you got your old avatar back

@Maltysen yea
btw since I'm trichoplax. I reccomend upvoting that Downgoat guys post, i heard they're really cool

Downgoat's posts should be downgoated.

3:15 AM
;_; y u sai dis
he is nice gaot

Ironically, I think I'll finally be able to tell you two apart now.

.____.

Weird

Our identities will be a mess when the November rolls in

Am I the only one in here who is non-spoopy?

3:17 AM
pls halp i am thinking i am trichoplax

@DJMcMayhem Starman isn't spooky either

@DJMcMayhem That drawing is the most nauseating of the lot.

Nauseatingly bad, or nauseatingly spooky?

@DJMcMayhem Definitely not, there are only six spoopy people here right now, and maybe another ~3-4 offline

@DJMcMayhem and I just put a scream mask on my avatar, I should probably do a better one

3:20 AM
@DJMcMayhem Yes.

@DJMcMayhem I am?
it's not the same but it's certainly not spoopy
@Downgoat goddamnit @trichoplax why did you guys even do this

@Anyone for Charcoal's default charset for compression does the order of the non-symbols matter? I can't find any challenge that uses symbols and other chars

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ trichoplax did it last year before the goat was a goat. Then this happened:
16 mins ago, by Dennis
@Downgoat You should increase the confusion and change you goats' colors to those of trichoplax's usual avatar.

@DJMcMayhem I. can maek spoopy

If you do, I'll change it
I'm not good enough at image manipulation to do it myself, lol

3:24 AM
I suck at Photoshop™, but my skills were just enough to invert some colors. :P

I don't even have photoshop, I just use gimp

:| halp how to make cat in hat spoopy

Replace face with jack-o-lantern?

@DJMcMayhem I use paint :D

@Downgoat :O your profile picture....

3:25 AM
@DJMcMayhem :O

Btw, SVG is the coolest image format ever. I've written all icons for TIO v2 by hand.

DENNIS YOU TOO!??
what is happening...

@DJMcMayhem Me too. You suck at Photoshop was a famous YouTube tutorial.
@AshwinGupta Hey, it's tradition. I changed it last year too.

@Dennis pls tell me you golfed svgs too

@Dennis oh for Halloween?

3:27 AM
Yeah.

I guess I should change mines too.

@Downgoat That's why I did them by hand. The ones I tried hacking together with Inkscape were huge.

:D

@DJMcMayhem ok now I'm suddenly getting the inspiration for an extremely nerdy engineering remix of that joke involving a parabola.

3:29 AM
Man. Torrenting truly is incredible. I tried downloading gimp and it took forever cause my internet is crap right now, so I switched to torrenting it, and it was done in less than 30 seconds.

@Dennis IIRC Inkscape includes like 10 redundant tags in almost every single element every time you save

Torrents are absolutely awesome. They just became a synonym for piracy which kinda stands in the way of widespread adoption.
@ASCII-only It also sets your origin to some ridiculous value outside of the image's bounds and translates every element in it.

Yeah, definitely. It's really sad too. I'd love it see it in widespread use.
It's interesting that MS use torrenting for win10

@DJMcMayhem But torrents could be better

but cant someone put virus in torrent
or does torrent do like checksum kinda thing

3:33 AM
Plus torrents + editability + node.js = the best
@Downgoat Yes they can but people can also download viruses, what's the difference

Torrents use cryptographically secure hashes. As long as you trust the creator of the torrent, it's more secure than an HTTP download.

@Downgoat I'd assume so. Even if they didn't, I don't think you could infect someone because you don't know which part of the file you're seeding, so you'd have no way of knowing that you're seeding the virus part.
They might even end up getting only half of your modified file

@DJMcMayhem Well, that may be true for standard clients, but you can always write your own.

this > torrent

the only added security you get is prevention of hacking of your server
aka, trust of the creator is the same as trust of the http server you are downloading

3:35 AM
@ASCII-only ಠ_________________ಠ
why are people making big things in nodejs

Soo, pancakes or crepes?

nodejs is flimsy and slow

@Dennis Isn't the cryptography on the underlying protocol, not the client?

define crepes

@Downgoat Because fast test cycle, and way more than fast enough, plus super easy to write plus there's a module for everything (please don't do npm install everything unless you have a few GB of free space)

3:36 AM
@HelkaHomba A meal, or a dessert?

@ASCII-only :/

@NathanMerrill thin, pan-sized pancakes (with a slightly different recipe)

mocha is slow

@HelkaHomba sweet?

@NathanMerrill If the server uses TLS, sure, but a plain HTTP connection is susceptible to MitM attacks.

3:37 AM
@NathanMerrill yes

er, I was assuming https :)
@HelkaHomba then definitely crepes

npm ERR! addLocal Could not install /Users/vihan/everything@latest
;_; @ASCII-only

@Downgoat Many large projects have a Go and node implementation
@Downgoat What did you do

@DJMcMayhem yes

also, how thin is thin? Are they "as thin as possible" or "I still want to taste them" thin?

3:38 AM
@DJMcMayhem It is. I was referring to you don't know which part of the file you're seeding. The receiver will reject the modified chunks because of their invalid hashes though.

@ASCII-only i did not touch anything i swear :P

@Downgoat You either need to npm init or npm install everything -g

it just bork ;_;

@Dennis Oh, so each chunk has it's own hash, rather than hashing the entire file/folder/whatever?
(FWIW, I know very little about the details of torrenting)

Yes.

3:40 AM
Man, trichoplax is using more ASCII faces than usual today. It's weird.

@HelkaHomba crepes (I get filling, right?)

@NathanMerrill uhh, 1 mm +/- 3 microns

@DJMcMayhem The torrent file contains the hashes of all chunks, so they can be validated after downloading. This helps not only mitigate malice but accidental corruption as well, a feature that is lacking in HTTP(S) downloads. If one chunk gets downloaded incorrectly, you only need to re-download that chunk.

@Maltysen Well, I'm not mailing these out to people...though a paper thin crepe could be the envelope with the filling inside.

3:43 AM
Is HTTP chunk-based also? (Hashing aside)

> Goats Blood

@HelkaHomba great, now I can't tell you and the goat apart

;______; THIS IS HORRIBLE Q_______Q
THE DOCTOR LIED TO ME

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ blame the goat

3:45 AM
> Just stuff pizza in a bra then into barrel.

@Downgoat see above
@Maltysen yes

@Downgoat ... The doctor? DR Ham jam?

@HelkaHomba ;_;

> Unripe Quince

[blame:tag-hooves]
i am very tired O_o

3:46 AM
> Four Foot Fluorescent Lights
seems legit

@DJMcMayhem Depends on the server. A properly configured server should accept ranges and respond with HTTP 206, but splitting the download is up to the client. Technically, HTTP also supports hashing, but since the ranges can be whatever (rather than n chunks of fixed size), it would have to compute the hash for every request, which is impractical.

@DJMcMayhem :O U lie to gaot too? ;_;

@Downgoat No I was asking because I didn't know what you meant

oh, no, i was talking aobut normal doctor when goat go for blood test

Very out of context

3:47 AM
@Downgoat what doc

@Downgoat wat

+1 for wat

Now we just have more questions.

@Downgoat I was blue before you. Goat hooves make glue.

@HelkaHomba s/blue/Calvins Hobbies/

3:47 AM
Like "Why were you getting a blood test? How did he lie to you? Was it a goat doctor or a regular doctor? Why are you sharing this with strangers on the internet?"

I'll go back to normal Downgoat colors if you go back to Calvin's Hobbies.
9
@DJMcMayhem 1) because health 2) idk gaot is confused 3) uhhhhh, STAHP TRICK QUESTIONS 4) for porpoise of joke

@Downgoat if you fix gramamr you get moar star

Odd - code golf; by far shortest solution; with an explanation; yet the only one of 39 answers with a down vote :/

Jelly?

3:49 AM
yup

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ fixed

tanks you get starz

you shaved a byte

we need to start keeping list of things we've promised to helka if he goes back to calvin

N(e(s(t(e(d)))))

3:50 AM
Hey, I got a salt vote on a zsh answer the other day.

> Please don’t give me a goat for the holidays

I got two downvotes on N(e(s(t(e(d))))) right after I posted it. One of them was retracted.

@Downgoat If Trump wins I'll go back to Calvin. Read: Never.

@Dennis super sorry >_> that was me i click wrong button but by tie i relized it was too late to undo

@HelkaHomba great, you jinxed it.

3:51 AM
@HelkaHomba You joke, and yet here we are...

@JonathanAllan If you like to post in golfing languages, better get used to it. I usually gey one downvote per week.

@HelkaHomba it'd be worth it, though

@Dennis goddamnit dennis

Export the $PATH?

@Dennis fixed

3:52 AM
I misadvertently tried to FGITW it with Jelly. Needed to read $PATH, not take $PATH.

mathjax plugin really messes up that message

@Downgoat Oh! Alrightie then. :)

Edit and unvote. I've done it before

you mean [blame:tag-hooves] :P

:P

3:55 AM
CMC: write the shortest program with an unknown halting status.

@HelkaHomba One more reason to vote for Trump.

@HelkaHomba But I thought you said you would change your name in like 9 years and a few months

@ASCII-only Maybe. I forget

pls tell me how i am supposed to do ^^ hooves are difficult :P

3:57 AM
@Downgoat No more red hoof polish

wat
i am red goat .________.

...we talk about goats way too much in this chatroom...

@Downgoat You didn't draw a picture of yourself drawing the iPad 0/10

No offence @Dow, it's just strange :P

>:| so we can talk about people as much as we want but when its goats its problem :P
@ASCII-only cant make such fancy drawing rn graphic tablet is in case and too lazy to take out

3:59 AM
@Downgoat How do you take it out with hooves

The only two things we don't seem to talk about are programming puzzles and code golf.

@ASCII-only use teeth
@Dennis i tri ask on-topic question about language validity but no answer ;_;

What was the question?

Sep 30 at 17:20, by Downgoat
@Downgoat pls. I have on-topic question about site
its regarding:
Sep 30 at 17:15, by Downgoat
> Support a representation of natural numbers and of tuples. (We're talking about languages rather than implementations, so we will leave to one side the issue of type widths).

hmmm...I have two choices with returning collections: return a mutable collection that throws an error when you try to mutate, or return a immutable collection that doesn't extend Map and is O(n)

4:01 AM
yet languages such as sed, css, etc. lack this

Well, no, not really. You can represent tuples of non-negative integers using nothing but 1's and spaces.

not really possible with CSS tho
or bubblegum (to my knoledge)

Bubblegum is actually Turing complete.

"turing complete"

Numbers are in unary, tuple is probably something with elements separated with space and delimited by double space?

4:06 AM
@Dennis theoretically? or proven?

oooh, somebody should start golfing using only Java's BigInt

._____.

Assuming that SHA-256 is a PRF, the proof is easy. There's an infinite amount of Python programs that implement brainfuck (just add any comment), and infinitely many of those will have the correct hash.

That's like saying seed is turing complete

Finding one of those is left as an excercise for the reader.

4:09 AM
well our policy says invalid until proven valid so...

@DJMcMayhem It is. TC is a theoretical concept anyway, as it requires an infinite amount of memory.

Sep 14 '15 at 21:19, by undergroundmonorail
i would not be surprised if nethack was turning complete, much the same way m:tg is
:D I am not only one who says turning complete

@HelkaHomba thanks, you just gave trump all the PPCG votes

Are butterflies turing complete? :P

@Maltysen s/PPCG/TNB/

4:12 AM
@Downgoat Oh, it totally satisfies our definition, since it can compute the sum of all tuples of numbers.

://////

@Maltysen oops...

it just feels so cheaty
brb porpoising standard loophole

It is. I chose the most in-your-face way to comply with the definition, as a critique to both that definition and boring Kolmogorov complexity challenges. Hasn't had an impact on either though.

@Downgoat whenever you post a message now, I look at your avatar, start taking you seriously, then read the message, and then stop taking you seriously

4:14 AM
i figured out grand unification theory

Focus on the content, not the poster. :P

@Maltysen ;_;
quesiton: how to get people start taking gaot seriously?

Kinda like me browsing main and thinking hey, there's a new Jelly user :D, just to realize a split second later it's me.
@Downgoat Stop being a goat.

;_; y y'all haet gaots
gaots are 2nd best animal

@Downgoat Use Dragon NaturallySpeaking get SwiftKey

4:18 AM
I don't. I'm not even sure what a gaot is.

goats are coolest animal

They nibble on your clothes though.

@ASCII-only im on keyboard thouhg, not phone

@ASCII-only wait nvm its april fools joke
:/

4:20 AM
@ASCII-only is Dragon NaturallySpeaking what conor uses as input device?

SwiftKey and autocorrect are a huge pain if you regularly write in three different languages. :( I have yet to learn how to type on a touch screen...

@Maltysen Looks like they have a chrome extension (also SwiftKey for numbers would be so useful, look at the video)
@Downgoat Probably

I always hit w instead of e and space instead of n. ._.

you mean in terms of keyboard layout?

I guess. If I make the spacebar smaller, I type letters instead of spaces. If I make it bigger, it's the other way around.
I miss my Nokia C3.
If there was a decent smartphone with a physical keyboard, I'd buy it.

4:29 AM
blackberry?
@Downgoat what happened to your avatar?
it was red

it got trichoplaxified

@DmitryKudriavtsev I said decent. :P
Good night y‘all!

Good night @Dennis

Good morning!
I see @Dennis is sleeping early? :P

4:46 AM
@GamrCorps Whatever happened to this Puzzling post you posted: puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/37092/…? Did no one get anywhere near the answer?

So... I am completely dumbfounded. I received details from Google on my salary and benefits today. They are extremely generous with compensation, and their benefits are ridiculously good.

question: do you get a discount on google self-driving car when it comes out?

Anonymous
4:50 AM
Almost certainly

:O

I'll get discounts on all Google products, so I don't see why that would be excluded

Some of my first purchases will be a Pixel and Google Wifi

Can you now to, say, help get certain PPCG users to any sort of PPCG meetup :D

.___. is there any reason to not get job at google

Seeing as I'm on a different continent than most of you guys? hinthint :D

@Downgoat Nathan turned down his job offer. I don't know why (he never said, or I don't remember him ever saying why), but I'd imagine him having a family factored in.

But I'm not allowed to talk about the super secret portal technology

:O what is this sorcery I add like one line of code and something I haven't tested before magically works

@Mego do u get discount on super secret portal technology too :/

Aw, that's okay. I wouldn't want to go without my family anyway and four portal technology tests plane tickets would be too big a favor, honestly

Can portals planes lift on moving platforms?

The strikethrough is very important. Keeps him from violating any NDAs :D

4:55 AM
sorry fixed
:O Mego has stopped responding ;_; he must of violated NDA Q___Q
(or is busy doing something else but clearly violating NDA is more likely)

clearly

Clearly, we need to travel to Google immediately and rescue Mego from its dungeons
i.e. the Google Spaces development team :P

clearly this is discrmination against penguins. @google how could u do dis ;_;

Chat doesn't like too many pings. Google doesn't like too many pinguins :P

The app is shell company or something like that! Clearly

@Downgoat Actually I was trying to get my new tablet to run updates

Given my experience with the interview process, I highly doubt that interviewer was actually from Google. Anyone can claim to be from Google.

Should "spiffifying" have 3 f's or 2?

3 if the first i is pronounced long, 2 if otherwise.

I feel a bit insulted. My JS plugin "justContext", which is specifically built not to use jQuery, was included in the list jQuery Plugins for October 2016 >.>
14

@HelkaHomba Looks like it's not a word, but spiffifying has ~1700 uses compared to 47 for spififying
> justContext is a simple context menu plugin that doesn’t require jQuery
Well, at least they acknowledge that

Hi @DestructibleWatermelon

5:45 AM
Makes the title even more misleading. Though some people seem to think that jQuery is actually a language.

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ Have you tried using jQuery?

@mınxomaτ They probably created the list using a bot written in JS+jQuery

It's even more troubling that someone might actually use this plugin. The code is pretty horrible.

6:03 AM
@ConorO'Brien and anyone else that is interested in the aesthetically pleasing divisor tree challenge I posted a few weeks ago.
I almost have a Python answer working but there's still some darn bugs and I could use some help with figuring out what I need to fix. Ideone link: ideone.com/Z3JMma
That's just the code. I'll add in comments later if needed. Thanks in advance

@Sherlock9 I'd guess it's an issue with line 36 and/or 49?
You may need to do len(s.split("\n"))%2 or something?

No, I don't have any \n in my trees

I found it troubling that this challenge didn't have a Go answer. So, naturally, I learned enough Go to write a quick solution.

Kai SchmidtI installed SDL2 for mingw using this guide. However, when i try to compile using the compilation syntax and test code they provide, only with my own file names, I get the error shown here. I assume that this error has something to do with a problem in the way I installed SDL, as the installation...
