Q: RegEx: Grabbing values between quotation marks

deadbugI have a value like this: "Foo Bar" "Another Value" something else What regex will return the values enclosed in the quotation marks (e.g. Foo Bar and Another Value)?

Anyone up for some sequence-identification? OEIS isn't helping me here.
=> [0, 1, 2, 2, 4, 3, 4, 3, 6, 5, 6, 4, 6, 5, 6, 4, 8, 7, 8, 6, 8, 7, 8, 5, 8, 7, 8, 6, 8, 7, 8, 5, 10, 9, 10, 8, 10, 9, 10, 7, 10, 9, 10, 8, 10, 9, 10, 6, 10, 9, 10, 8, 10, 9, 10, 7, 10, 9, 10, 8, 10, 9, 10, 6, 12, 11, 12, 10, 12, 11, 12, 9, 12, 11, 12, 10, 12, 11, 12, 8, 12, 11, 12, 10, 12, 11, 12, 9, 12, 11, 12, 10, 12, 11, 12, 7, 12, 11, 12, 10]
It looks sort of like a modular sequence, but not really.
20:06
The stray 7s must be indicative of something.
It definitely has some interesting properties. Note the patterns: [65, 64]*2; [87, 86, 87, 85]*2; [A9, A8, A9, A7, A9, A8, A9, A6]*2; etc. (where A represents 10)
@El'endiaStarman oh interesting
The graph suggests a binary pattern.
^
STEPS FOR A BINARY SEARCH
maybe
yeah :)
(Was curious if there was a closed form though)
Chances are good there is one.
I remember looking for one myself a while ago. I thought I had something, but never went back to the problem. I'll have to look back in my journals
Have we done something like a reverse sentence challenge?
@RikerW Got a sed-friendly version?
sed: 1: "/(\")(\\?.)*?\"": unterminated regular expression
:I
I can't do this. xD
20:13
... oh, whoops, I botched the sequence generating code
I feel like I could generate that sequence, but I'm falling short of a way of describing it that would fit with OEIS
Here are the correct numbers, up to n=200:
... or not, "this message is too long"
=> [0, 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, 5, 3, 7, 6, 7, 5, 7, 6, 7, 4, 9, 8, 9, 7, 9, 8, 9, 6, 9, 8, 9, 7, 9, 8, 9, 5, 11, 10, 11, 9, 11, 10, 11, 8, 11, 10, 11, 9, 11, 10, 11, 7, 11, 10, 11, 9, 11, 10, 11, 8, 11, 10, 11, 9, 11, 10, 11, 6, 13, 12, 13, 11, 13, 12, 13, 10, 13, 12, 13, 11, 13, 12, 13, 9, 13, 12, 13, 11, 13, 12, 13, 10, 13, 12, 13, 11, 13, 12, 13, 8, 13, 12, 13, 11]
The sequence is how many steps it takes to binary search to n starting at 1, with the strategy "double until the upper bound is greater than n, take the average rounded down repeatedly and set it as the appropriate bound until the guess is correct"
Yeah, that's more like it.
20:15
So it was a binary search. Nice.
so, finding 15 would be 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 8 -> 16 -> 12 -> 14 -> 15
7 steps (not counting the starting "guess")
log(n) + popcount(n) would be my first guess
Still no luck on OEIS, anyway
20:17
Try searching starting with a later term (i.e., not the first or second term).
Yeah, that's what I did
Incrementing every number in the array (which would account for the first "guess" of 1, which I should probably be counting anyway) yields oeis.org/A161920 which is close but not quite it

Can quotes be escaped?
Has to be a single regex?
string.split('"')[3], don't use regex when you don't need it

um why

Is there anywhere that "What makes a sequence an interesting golf challenge?" would be on topic? There are some meta discussions seeking advice on writing good challenges. Would this more specific question be a duplicate?
I would probably say it's not a dupe
20:24
Maybe I'll try it then. Obviously I'll try to expand it more than that
@VoteToClose Anyway, this is a pretty good example of the XY problem :P
Men?
But yeah, basically, what I was doing was providing myself a ddns - I upload my current IP to dropbox every ten minutes on my ssh server, then from my computer, I download the IP address. I needed to parse a JSON file. :P
...
then you should ask about parsing a JSON file, not about regexes
Meh.
I have no software to parse JSON.
And I can't download/install any.
20:33
@VoteToClose yes you do
ruby, maybe.

your browser
This is not a sane system.
(by the way: @MartinBüttner, I said "regexes." happy now? :P)

were you one of those people who use "regexen"?

Both Python and JavaScript have easily-accessible tools to parse JSON.
As well as encode stuff into JSON.

I thought you were supposed to drop the x and add c. So regeces.
I really couldn't care less how you pluralise your regexa
vertex -> vertices, index -> indices, ... regex -> regices? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I could.
(I could too - I must admit)
20:53
@Doorknob Except "regex" is not a Latin word.
Hi
Hi!
@El'endiaStarman Wait, we're not just making up rules now?
@El'endiaStarman Wikitionary says it's either regexes or regexen. Or, of course, we could all just use regexps. :P
artices, semptices, trices
20:54
How's ur time;)
Yes, nothing easier to pronounce than regexps.
hahaha
Wts subject?
regexen is listed as “humorous” though
it's pretty simple actually... the plural of regex is clearly retina.
20:55
@MartinBüttner But regexes were around long before Retina.
I have no trouble pronouncing “regexps” :(
I blame Dutch.
@El'endiaStarman [citation-needed]
It's an abbreviation, so in the UK it's regexs and in the US it's just regex.
El'endia seems a bit humor-immune about this subject.

20:57
:(
@El'endiaStarman ... case in point :P
> Who are you?
I ' m not sure
> What are you not sure of?
I ' m not a _UNK to be a _UNK
> What does _UNK mean?
_UNK
> Yay!
I ' m not a _UNK to be a _UNK
> Yea, I know. That was a dirty trick.
I ' m not sure it ' s a _UNK of the _UNK of the _UNK .
> Hmm... go back to school some more.
I ' m not sure it ' s a _UNK of the _UNK .
@El'endiaStarman so? I'm pretty sure before Retina was a thing no one ever used more than one regex at a time.
@Geobits ... okay, seriously, where does "_UNK" come from?
@Geobits You really need to work on that. It should be "an" before "_UNK"
20:59
@Doorknob It's the default 'unknown' token. I don't know why it likes using it so much. It probably wouldn't if I expanded the vocabulary, but at 40k words/tokens it's already going very slowly.
oh, "UNKnown"
If I decide to use it in an actual application, there would be guards against it. This is just raw output from the net.
@Doorknob
ssh pi@`cat ~/Dropbox/Apps/VTCPIIP/.currentip| awk -F '"' '{print $4}'`
\o/
@MartinBüttner Doesn't matter. Retinas have been around for much longer, according to most biology books.
Thanks m8. :D
21:01
More seriously, these definitely look like they are heading towards meaningful sentences and better context
@Geobits Pretty sure there were regexesii before people were around to talk about them.
@VoteToClose -1 for backticks and lack of double quotes :P ssh "pi@$(cat ... '{print $4}')" would be better
@trichoplax Yes, this one is on step 4700 right now. I'm anxious to see step 40k :)
Eh. I prefer this. I like backticks. :D
Plus, single is more golfy than double.
(though not really)
@Geobits Yes show us when it's fully cooked
21:03
cook faster
Do we have a Meta answer on how to handle incorrect answers from inactive users?
I can't seem to find one.
Let's see, avg 4 seconds per step... 40k steps... gimme a couple days :D
@VoteToClose I made a similar suggestion in a comment on someone's answer once. The fact that it was a joke did not come across :(
@Calvin'sHobbies I'll take that into consideration if I decide to scale it up with better models ;)

They're only $5 now? Huh. Time to spend some money :D
the littler ones
It's a smaller version but in some ways more powerful than the original $25 ones
Very little RAM though...
I've been thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi to keep perpetually running in my house for use as a web server
21:08
@trichoplax like what?
1GHz, single core, 512MB RAM
So faster, but less RAM
Why the immediate downvote on codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/71613/3808?
ugh. This is not a general programming question, people! Read before you closevote...
@Calvin'sHobbies The model B is slightly slower (900MHz) but is quad core with 1GB RAM
The main advantage is you can get 5 of the little ones for the same price...

Q: Tips for golfing in Retina

Digital TraumaWhat general tips do you have for golfing in Retina? I'm looking for ideas that can be applied to code golf problems in general that are at least somewhat specific to Retina (e.g. "remove comments" is not an answer). Please post one tip per answer. For reference, the online compiler is here.

@NewMainPosts Is "Post it on chat with a ping to Martin" an acceptable answer? ;-)
We're now at 9.5 questions a day
Maybe we'll actually reach the 10
@Adnan Did you not hear the news? Apparently we're already eligible to graduate and the reason we haven't (for five years) is due to some kind of software bug.
I'm not sure why people are so fascinated with 10q/day - we've hit it a few times, but it's a number that fluctuates a lot and I don't think we should be stressing out about it so much :P
@Sp3000 I think it's because it was specifically singled out as the goal for graduation by a CM in a comment at some point
7.9 questions a day means you all are getting close. I'm guessing (at this rate) you'll get an election later in the year and a design sometime later. Not much else to say, really. — Jon Ericson ♦ Jan 15 at 4:11

@Adnan Who knows when it'll happen. Grace Note will post on our meta once SE figures out what it was in the software that was showing us as ineligible. Then we might be put in a queue to graduate, and at some point we'll get formal moderator elections and a site design.

@MichaelT Music and Japanese were in the loop before we set the new criteria. Aviation hit "eligibility" on October 19th. All 3 had delayed graduations, the former because of the whole design thing and the latter due to the pileup of graduations from implementing design independent. We just ran Code Golf through the eligibility check though, and it passed, and probably should've passed a while ago. So we're looking into why it hasn't been flagged yet. — Grace Note ♦ 23 hours ago

All that says is that the software Grace used and the software that "flags" us are not the same software. It doesn't mention an issue or a bug.

It's quite possible that Grace will come back and say "Figured it out. Someone higher up put a hold on your site for Reasons X and Y."
