I'm allergic to cats but I love them so much
I'm also allergic to cats (mildly) and I don't love them at all.
Dogs, on the other hand, are the best.
Nice photography skills @Roujo.
I giggled.
Also super allergic to cats. ;___;
21:01
@El'endiaStarman Dogs are wonderful.
@RikerW My wife's, actually. She even did this one for our save-the-dates
@Roujo Your cat is saying, "Why would you use this glowing box when you could be paying attention to me?"
21:02
@RikerW Citation: the three dogs I had/have.
Well, we have 2 dogs 3 cats 11 fish...
@flawr That's super cute ^^
@Zgarb ... oh, huh, that's actually pretty interesting
@Roujo I like the keyboard
I mean, the cat clearly likes it more.
21:03
Is that one of those keyboards? You know, those ones...
But where’d you get it?
The cat or the keyboard?
Don't they come as bundles?
21:04
<s>Yes.</s>
~~help~~
there is
There is
ninja'd
DAMN NINJAO
ninja'd-ninja'd
21:04
OH SHITUDE
@Lynn It's a Das Keyboard 3 which originally had blank keycaps, but then I ended up getting a set of Keycool rainbow caps from Massdrop
@Roujo Is your keyboard pastel?
Yes.
@TimmyD Yup, rainbow pastel.
Is it -hyphens?-
21:05
@Lynn --- on either side.
Is it ~tildes?~
Three ---
ninja'ed bruther ex-son in law
Oh, wow, weird syntax.
21:05
yas
Aaaah, cool
yessssss
question: does the sequence starting with 1, 4, -3, 10, -11, 20, -23, 34, -39, 52, -59, 74, -83, 100, -111, 130, -143, 164, -179, 202, -219, 244, -263, 290, -311, 340 ... mean anything to anyone? (I couldn't find it on OEIS, even removing all the signs, nor did WolframAlpha give me anything)
21:06
oh, I think I know that, gimme a mo
@Doorknob It means so much to me I don't think I could live without it
What is it, though, with expensive keyboards and putting ugly sci-fi-B-movie typefaces on the caps
Ah, awesome. I use a Microsoft® Natural Ergonomic 4000® at work
Hahahaha @AlexA.
21:07
@TimmyD Microsoft HatredIncarnate™
But a Razer BlackWidow at home.
@Doorknob Where’s it from?
@TimmyD work®
@TimmyD Mine's just a Microsoft Wired 400 =P
I use the keyboard that's part of my laptop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
21:07
I tried getting my team lead to let me bring my mech, but he claims he'll go deaf if I do
They're not even blues! =P
I don't like mech keyboards.
@Roujo I think you can get dampers for them, right?
@Lynn you'll see ;)
at around 0:00 UTC
21:08
I just use the apple laptop keyboard.
@Doorknob That is in 3 UTC hours
@AlexA. I don't think I'll be able to reason with him. I offered him getting dampeners, and he wouldn't hear it =P
@Dennis would you like me to make detour run as fast as possible, or slower so that the output doesn't explode for an infinite-output program?
I think I'll just bring it one day w/ dampeners and see if he'll notice
What do you do for work?
21:09
work, at least sometimes
@AlexA. I pasted the challenge into Google Drive so I could post it from my phone right after I finish with tennis., since I've got a long drive after that anyway :P
Tennis?
@Doorknob Physical activity? Gross.
I like racquetball better.
21:10
@AlexA. Software developer, C# + ASP.NET
I’m pretty sure that property lets you calculate it? Maybe not
Although I like F# a lot more =P
I have no darn clue why that is the first thing I tried, but.
@Lynn ... Wow. =D
@RikerW tennis is a sport in which one uses an object shaped roughly like an oval attached to a protruding handle to repeatedly make contact with a roughly spherical playing utensil approximately the size of the fist of the species Homo sapiens, which has an appearance lying more or less in the middle of the visible color spectrum
21:11
> playing utensil
At least for the first few positive ones=)
@Doorknob What's the genetic markup of the second pair of chromosomes on that Homo sapiens thing you're talking about? You forgot to mention it.
Oh, well, there you go
@flawr ah, nice, those are indeed the positive ones
21:12
@Roujo XY in my case :P
For the negatives
err, second pair?
Do you mean the source of the positive ones?
@Doorknob How are you even alive? =P
Or just a correlation.
21:13
@Roujo haha
Another way to look at the sequence: the successive differences are 3, -7, 13, -21, 31, ..., and when you look at their absolute values, the successive differences are 4, 6, 8, 10, ....
@Doorknob I really liked the explanation, though. Now I know about tennis in more details than I thought I'd ever do
@Doorknob Negative ones: oeis.org/A142463
Does anyone understand this?
21:14
@flawr you got ninja'd by @Lynn ;)
@ThomasKwa I do, I think
Okay, well there seem to be several ways to calculate this sequence, actually. Looking forward to some interesting answers
@Lynn How
@Cyoce Infinite output is not a huge problem, but you don't have to optimize for speed either.
@ThomasKwa It turned out to be a pretty simple sequence, so neat patterns were bound to show up. :<
@Dennis I'll set it to an interval of 100.
@El'endiaStarman Oh, I just read
21:16
Repeatedly ΔList(-ing is my first bet when I see a sequence I don’t recognize.
@Lynn That was the first thing I did too. :P
@Lynn did you just use TI-BASIC syntax?
@ThomasKwa Makes absolutely no sense to me
@ThomasKwa Totallyyyy.
I dunno what to call that process @_@
It’s so clumsy to describe
I like the range of emoticons you use, @Lynn.
21:18
@Lynn Insight + Luck + Bumbling about. The best process.
10
^ how I get anything done
@Lynn You could also I it.
I just call it taking (forward) differences
21:20
It's the process I used during my Calculus II class - try random formulas and see what I get afterwards.
Wouldn't recommend it as far as calculus is concerned.
BUT
For Life in General™, I support and do so.
@Dennis Jelly is quickly becoming my go-to quicky-call-a-function-or-two environment. I suppose this is how I become a convert.
@Roujo It’s how I integrate like anything
@Lynn Well I'll have to get better at it, then, because I ended up dropping that course >_>
“Let’s make a substitution setting u = pffffft (looks around the formula)”
I ended up going in circles too often =P
That’s the most frustrating Calculus thing
21:23
"Huh, this looks familiar, maybe it's a formula-- nope, it's what I had 5 steps and 10 minutes ago"
...there's a pun there somewhere.
“Oh wow it all simplifies down to... the thing I started with.”
"My hand hurts"
@AlexA. me irl
21:24
hahaha
Hmmm... Three quotes of me on the starboard... *goes back to work*
Actually doing work while at work is quite overrated.
I'll leave you guys to this:
user image
2
wtf is this
A band, apparently
21:28
Oh, huh.
@Lynn Many, many times I got that. Substitution is double-edged sword
With integration, the simplest thing to do is use numerical method. That does come with the problem of picking a numerical method, but most methods are okay with approximations. If a formula exists on the other hand, it may not be the most optimal thing to do
Who's got the Jelly docs? I figure I should get on this bandwagon
I am the one who docs.
hi.. would anyone be kind enough to test out meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/8289/9206 for sanity please
@Lynn created practically everything, and the only other piece is Dennis's incomplete atom list.
21:32
dogs
@Sherlock9 I believe Dennis said at one point that the language was still in too much flux for documentation to be a worthwhile endeavor.
@Lembik Too much text. Needs more images.
Right then, who's got the Jelly GitHub page so I can read the source code?
the k-cover time. We can see that cover-time = 1-cover time. Your hyphen are confusing here
21:33
Meta Challenge: Make a challenge that only consists of pictures.
Thanks @Lynn
@AlexA. That is probably true, but I wish he’d write comments. :(
@flawr Like the lego instruction manuals?
:P
@flawr :) I would gratefully accept image contributions!!
@Sherlock9 thanks
@flawr You could write out instructions in LaTeX and compile to PNG, then embed that in the post body. :P
@Lynn Same
21:34
@Sherlock9 hopefully fixed that hyphen issue
@AlexA. METAPOST
The real thing.
Order of operations actually helped:
100/3.81/0.044
= 100/(3.81*0.044)
@AlexA. Same
@Lembik I read the challenge now, why not actually compute the exact expected times?
@flawr because I don't know how to!
@flawr if you know how to.. please tell me! Or just add it as a comment
@Lembik I would mention what people should try to minimize (the cover time ratio) in the task. Also, explores different undirected graphs is pretty vague...
21:36
It has been studied a lot under the name Markov Chains
@Lynn thanks
@Lynn we are trying to maximize not minimize
Err, yes
@Lembik The expected number of steps you have to take to cover every node is just the maximum of all the expected number of steps to each node, right?
Make sure to put that in score too. Are higher scores or lower scores better?
@Lynn higher is better!
21:38
Dude, reply button.
@flawr hmm.. I am not sure the max of the mean is the same as the mean of the max
(@Lembik) ^^
@RikerW thanks
@RikerW s/lego/Ikea
21:45
@Dennis here it is. usage: $ node node-detour.js <filename> <...args>
> Friend: "<other name> is decent at tennis; he'll probably make varsity. I'm... indecent."
> Me: "that word has a very different meaning than you think"
@Doorknob OR he's really really bad.
He must be one of those people who runs nude onto tennis courts during professional matches
4
21:47
My name is Inigo Montoya
You killed my father
Prepare to die
@AlexA. That guy was one letter away from being sad forever.
I need to reread this book=)
@Roujo ?
@AlexA. Inigo → Indigo → blue → sad
Ohhhhh
Indigo is purple, broseph
21:49
Well, blue-ish
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Roujo 'sad'.length == 3 → triangle → Illuminati confirmed
That reminds me of thewikigame.com
> I'd say brownish-gold.
@flawr That's a fun game! =D
21:52
@Lynn Thanks, but I'm planning to look further into Jelly when it isn't 5 am where I am
Good idea. It took me a while to figure out that room existed, though, so
@Cyoce Node doesn't seem to happy with the ES6 syntax...
@Dennis what ES6 syntax
jQuery
21:54
@Lynn Fair enough
@Dennis you're using detour-node. use node-detour
-1 for choice of file names. :P
TIL that X compose sequences allow multiple character outputs. brb adding adding all the emoticons
@Dennis y u no like node-detour?
@Cyoce Still too ES6y. It doesn't like ' '.repeat.
21:56
TIL that alt-gr + = = ×
User ticket comes in asking for permissions to a share. They include this helpful tidbit -- "Just guessing at the network path"
@AlexA. Because there's also detour-node. 10/10 very confusing
@Dennis I've seen worse :P
Me too. I'm just being obnoxious.
