I never had to use those, you could just commit your changes, and you had to resolve potential collisions if someone else commited somethign else in the meantime...

if i was nitpicking i'd say that you should be able to see the message pre-replacement for an average of half a second before it changes, but good enough :P
Anyone wants to see the transcript with all instances of "idiot" replaced with "^"? This replaces the very html content in the webpage so that all instances of "idiot" are replaces with "^". Use setInterval to make it go on forever.

Well you claimed to not know much octave long before the sock came about. So I doubt that you learned the language just to use it for a sock and never your main user. So I don't suspect you.
