@El'endiaStarman I found a use for the 2D stacks: holding strings as variables, treating each "column" of the main stack as an array.

Hmmm. I don't quite see what you mean.

So, for the 99 Bottles song, you store " bottles of beer." in one stack, shifting to it every time you wanted to print it out.

@NewSandboxedPosts @DLosc: It's definitely pretty wordy. However, I don't really see an easy and good way to reduce the word count. Besides, I enjoyed the lesson in Lisp... :P
@VoteToClose Sooo...like this?

The syntax in Vitsy would be ?l1-\[DO{]? - ? moves over a stack, l gets the length of the stack, 1- subtract one, \ repeat next sequence in [] top item times, DO{ Dupe a letter, print it out, and then move over one item in the stack, ? shift back to the original stack.

[[" bottles of beer", _, _, ...], [...], ...]?

7:49 AM
In my language, everything is stored as a double. :P

ah, okay

I'm holding a character at a time, printing one character at a time. Your language has an advantage, in that area. :P

:P
Also, is it just me, or are people all of a sudden implementing loops directly because I did? :P

I implemented them because ><> didn't.

That's why I implemented them too! :P
And I think @Sp3000 implemented them in Gol><> after I did.

Q: Program an archiving system!

George GibsonGenerate an archiving system I have lots of junk on my computer, and it needs organizing. However, I'm not very good at remembering, so I need a system to keep my files in order. So that is the challenge, write a system to keep my files in check. Rules Your program must work with text files. ...

Huh. Everybody wants loops.

@El'endiaStarman Loops that work? Yes. Loops that don't work? I've had those from ages back :P

@Sp3000 Hahaha. :P
Were you able to implement them successfully because I explained how mine worked?

(I think I've said this before, but I had a lot of trouble with getting while loops to not be do-whiles)

7:53 AM
It is also worth mentioning that I have some other functions ><> needs: ^, log_base, factorial, sine, cosine, tangent (and their inverses)...

Hmm well kinda? I'm still not too happy with the move-down behaviour, but it's the best I've got so far

@Sp3000 Ah, that's right. They're still do-while loops in Minkolang; I leave it up to the programmer to avoid them if need be.
@VoteToClose I have the first two and will be adding the rest soon.

@VoteToClose Of that list I've got everything but factorial, but that one's pretty trivial to implement (I'd probably make gamma a builtin instead though, if I get around to that)

My language practically needs loops since it's 1D. XD

Oooh, good idea.
Ha, indeed.
It just seemed strange that like everyone was using [] for loops.

7:55 AM
I had Gamma built in, but it was finicky and inaccurate.
@El'endiaStarman I couldn't use anything else. I used ( as if-not and ) as if, }{ rotates the current stack, so...

ahh, gotcha

If it helps, [] won't be loops here :P

Ah yes, they're (), right?

wWC and FC, actually

ahh

@MartinBüttner I didn't say Minkolang's was the most thorough. :P
But yeah, Funciton might get first place in that. :P

@El'endiaStarman Have you implemented 99 bottles in Minkolang?

Q: Are Mathematica's datasets valid?

LegionMammal978I, being an avid Mma user, sometimes use its many datasets (such as ElementData) for golfing purposes. However, these require the Wolfram Research servers to have the data. As I'm not directly connecting to the Internet, I am wondering if this would be considered a loophole.

12:24 PM
@MartinBüttner When I try to run your program I get Sorry, your stacks are in the wrong place! You can't print unless you put them back! Exiting.

@MartinBüttner Haven't noticed any problems on my Nexus 5.

@feersum That's odd. How did you compile the interpreter? And what test case did you use?

I meant that.

Is that equivalent to g++ --std=c++11?
Hm...
This isn't an \r\n issue by any chance? :P

That's hard to imagine.

12:36 PM
I don't know... my screw up label names if \r isn't treated as whitespace
it would probably screw up a lot more than that though
Also, I'm not using the recent update of the code, although I think that only affected the debug command.

It shouldn't see \r at all. The I/O things treat \r\n as \n.

ah okay
just tested with the most recent code as well, still works

Nevertheless that fixed it .....

what, removing \r? :D

I've never worried about \r and never had a problem with it. How do you guys manage to make programs like this?

12:40 PM
well in Retina, it's simply because I split the lines of \n.
(Which is easy to fix, but I'm not sure yet I want that.)
I don't know about this one.
Anyway, in the future you know the first thing to check. :P

In the future the first thing you check should be the date. Find a newspaper or clock or something.

I'm about ready to post this, any comments (particularly about the bonus)? meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/7268/32014

@Zgarb Looks ready to post to me (+1). My personal preference would be to not have a bonus (either require the largest test case to be completed in 10 minutes, or permit brute force approaches). But I always recommend against bonuses. There are plenty of good questions that work with bonuses - I just prefer to be able to compare all answers like for like.

I initially wanted to permit brute force, but the latest comment got me curious about efficient approaches. OTOH, I feel like forbidding brute force entirely would make it very difficult. So this is a kind-of compromise.
But thanks, I'm going to post it now.

Despite my bias, I'm quite curious to see both sides anyway...
