@quartata What is "current chain number"?

That's for when chains are broken

Wait, how would input not being a set be worse for itertools?

It'll start at 1, and then if an answer is posted that isn't cracked in 7 days we start a new chain and the number goes up

It doesn't check for duplicates

That way answers don't get confuzzled

2:01 AM

but since we're already calling list() on its output, it would help itertools if duplicates were a problem

@ZachGates Kek

Oh, I meant the fact that it's an actual set object, so you could do -{...}

> Blue with a hint of your mother

Yeah, so set helps non-itertools solution

2:05 AM
The other possibility for itertools being useful I can think of is groupby, but I can't think of any relevant challenges on the spot

@ZachGates (If anyone is confused by this, it's from the xkcd color survey.)

> A couple dozen people embedded SQL ‘drop table’ statements in the color names. Nice try, kids.

2:21 AM
I think I have salmonella

Well that came out of nowhere.

@minxomat I while back I went to a place where you had to put in your name and email address in order to get free wifi. I put in Billy; DROP TABLE * and a fake e-mail address. I don't think it worked

Vomiting, etc?

Stupid smart free wifi gits
@ZachGates Uh oh
silence
Is he ok?
Here

@quartata Back on the topic of your question, it still doesn't handle the case of a different valid crack than the intended one
Also, since humans are involved, it will frequently occur that they don't produce the same hash, even for the same program
They'll have an extra trailing \n or not, \n vs. \r\n, etc.

2:26 AM
@feersum I think unfortunately there's no way to handle different valid cracks since we don't know the output
And as far as bad hashes
We could write a script that strips out all newlines invisible chars whitespace and lowercases everything and then calculate the hash
That's not too hard
Anyways gtg byte

Dear god my stomach

I think the recommended treatment for salmonella is old chicken salad.
Either that or fluids and sleep. Can never remember which.

I just f*cking bricked my laptop.

How?

Installation crashed, somehow
I can't even open BIOS settings
It freezes at the Dell screen.

UEFI?

3:17 AM
It's a newer laptop but an older model (windows 7) I think it has both UEFI and "legacy" with legacy the default.

Huh. If it's set to legacy, an installation shouldn't be able to mess with the BIOS.

Well, what if it was actually set to UEFI?

In certain setups, you can access UEFI only from within the OS, but I don't think that's even possible with Windows 7.

3:37 AM
Was that comment for me or OP? @Geobits

OP

Do you think the rollback was needed? I don't want to overestimate my perceived contribution

Needed? Probably not. A lot of it was stylistic IMO, so it could go either way for me. In those cases it's almost never worth worrying about if they roll it back.

@Sp3000 Are you still working on the cluster size challenge?

Slowly, yes. I could probably be in the lead temporarily if I pick something like BF, but I was hoping to avoid that...

3:41 AM
As in "Well I tried to make it a bit better, but if you insist...". If a rollback actively hurts the quality, it might be worth caring about.

@Geobits Alright, thanks

@Sp3000 OK. I just wanted to know if I should still wait before accepting an answer. I usually do that after 7 days of inactivity, but this is no ordinary code golf.

Ah, right - thanks :) Sorry for taking so long

No worries. Taking your time seems to be worth it. 9 tasks in 218 bytes is impressive.

How can I split a string into characters in CJam?.. @Dennis .. :) ?

By doing nothing. :P A string is nothing but an array of characters.

Oh, awesome! Nevermind :3

"damnCJam".toCharArray()
2

4:20 AM
I don't think I was clear
"ABC" --> [A B C] @Dennis
So I can map a block to each character

Yes, that's precisely what I understood. ['A 'B 'C] and "ABC" are literally the same thing.
"ABC"{...}% works just fine.

Oh, ok

What are you trying to do?

Character to ordinal

"ABC":i
Doesn't even require a block.

4:23 AM
Oh, dang
What if I take the string as an input? q:i?

Yes, that works.

If you had to guess what network someone would ask the question, "Can I choose not to fly?", what network would you guess?

Arqade
Or Board/Card Games

Or RPGs
Or Worldbuilding (but that's cheating, since that's an answer to anything)
Oh, or Lifehacks
Maybe Travel

Travel seems pretty reasonable :P

I should have brought a buzzer and a bell so he would know when to stop guessing...

If you had to guess what network someone would ask the question, "Can I choose not to fly?", what network would you guess?

No I mean the actual question title itself

Oh okay. Like ""Can I choose not to fly?""

^^ that

1:09 PM
I don't know too much about that site
But my best question is closed
Well nevermind. Apparently one of my other questions shot up above it
But seriously... how is this off topic? english.stackexchange.com/q/169985/72792

Hm... so some sites have "general reference" as a close reason, interesting...

Whatev. Just means I won't be using them as a general reference.

(btw this title guessing could be a fun game - which network has a question title "Unnamed faces in my oven"?)

Imagine if SO had a general reference close reason. "Sorry, but everybody knows this already. Go away."

Hmm I'd expect that they'd allow the first one, then close the rest as dupes instead actually, now that you put it that way
Different sites work differently, I suppose

1:15 PM
For a long time, "not constructive" seemed to be used that way quite often on SO.

everytime I mention that my sandbox post did not get any feedback yet, it gets downvoted ...
but still no feedback..

Which one? I might not have downvoted it yet, and I'd like to fix that :P

I guess that's what I get for mentioning Beta Decay in the post...
@Geobits "whose llama is it anyways"

Not my type of challenge, but I think it looks okay
The only thing is that you'd need very good test images for it to be interesting, such that there's a lot of ways to place the llama and still have it make sense

Hmm. I'm unsure. You may be getting voted down because it seems at first glance like an art contest.
I'm torn, because it really could depend on the test images and/or answers it gets.

1:20 PM
Hm... question: Should the placement be deterministic?

.0
wth...
Oh crap. Looks like my dog found my keyboard again.

@Geobits it is an art contest.

@Sp3000 may or may not. depends on the algorithm.

@Optimizer If you see it mostly as an art contest, why are you surprised by the lack of enthusiasm? They're generally frowned upon, with a few exceptions.

1:24 PM
@Geobits are they? Martin's and CH's ones were really really popular.
and I know many others

@aditsu He's a beagle. You'd have better luck finding a way to control the smell-generator card.

so definetely not "just" exceptions

@Optimizer I'm just a little worried because, relatively speaking, it's easy to implement a random algorithm and handpick the best ones

^

@Sp3000 so you are saying that it should only be restricted to deterministic ones?

1:26 PM
This isn't coming up with a small algorithm to tweet, or creating a voronoi image. It's "Place this picture on this other picture."

well, voronoi image could also be randomly generated and then the best ones could be handpicked and posted..

Is nobody going to mention how difficult it would be for a dogs paws to press .0[return]

I think deterministic is better, but I dunno

@Rainbolt Well, they're all next to each other on the numpad at least :)

The thing about Voronoi is that it's harder to generate though, whereas with this the only variables are position, scale and rotation

1:27 PM
Oh right. I forgot about numpads

@AlexA. I'm really at a loss for what to do about my computer.... I've arranged for it to be shipped back to Dell, but I'm afraid I'll lose whatever was on that drive. (I've backed up important files, but I'm talking more about the stuff that was installed on the drive)
I'm also not exactly sure how BIOS itself ended up broken.

How old is your computer?

Got it last month, from my university

Oh jeez. And it's a Dell you said?
In my experience they don't make the best computers but they should at least last more than a month.

If, say, grub had gotten corrupted and I could only boot from live media, then I would at least understand what happened, but it's not even that

ASUS's latest laptop has the desktop version of GTX 980
(instead of usual M (mobile) version)

7:39 PM
I can't even open the F12 boot options or F2 boot menu.

Sometimes you can fix BIOS problems with a medium application of hammer. Have you tried that?

no

Probably voids the warranty.
Btw, do you have a warranty on it?

Yes, complete care 4-year

Knowing Dell, trying to dual boot probably voids the warranty T_T

7:40 PM
Why? He was just Dell booting it

They separate their software and hardware warranties.

Oh that's good at least.

Are the programs you had installed on the drive ones which you can recover via physical media (i.e. installation discs) or licenses sent via email or something?

Finale will probably take a call to their customer support.
Mathematica I can transfer easily.

How did you install Finale?

7:46 PM
It took a decent amount of effort to get a hold of the correct Dell service person.
Finale via a physical disk, but it requires activation that is synced with their database.

I think they make getting ahold of tech support difficult on purpose so that people won't call them.

Can confirm

Why, do you work for Dell?

Well, I first tried calling a service number I found, but landed myself in India, with a response of update my account information and try again in 2-3 business days.
Then I decided, this must not be the "right" place to go.
Then I found dell's online chat technical help line.
Which actually involved me writing a description of my problem and being placed in a hardware-specific service queue.
Followed by some slow shuffling around to get into the queue for laptop hardware.

Still sounds better than Comcast so far.

7:52 PM
And then finally found myself in chat with someone who actually handled my problem.
^ big difference from Comcast

:D

No but because I've dealt with Dell so many times I've learned the mind of my enemy

Ah, the Sun Tzu approach. Very clever.

Yes

My favourite part of any automated phone system is smashing all the buttons and shouting to get to a real person.

7:54 PM
When I moved and changed the address associated with my Comcast account, they canceled my email address. I called and they were like, "Oh, you wanted to keep that too?" ಠ_ಠ

@SvenTheSurfer That works?

@BetaDecay It sure does.

I moved this spring and they cancelled my whole account without telling me instead of transferring it. I now have a totally different account.

Typically I've found that counting from 1 will bully the phone system into submission.

When I first set up the account, nothing worked because they had my last name wrong. ಠ_ಠ

7:56 PM
(Nice reference lel +10 nerd rep)

@quartata ?
@Geobits They did a similar thing with me.

@BetaDecay This, however, is a much better approach.

And, I was like "here's my serial numbers, it won't boot at all, etc." and they were like "sounds like it could be a motherboard issue, would you like to ship it to one of our depots to be fixed?" And the return box is already shipping.

@SvenTheSurfer That cannot possibly be better than smashing buttons and yelling.

^took too long to type and is now totally out of context
^applies to itself

7:59 PM
@Geobits To each his phone.

That's the problem with smartphones, though. You can't really smash buttons, hang up, or slam the receiver on the desk when you're mad.
