oh damn i forgot latex
So stuff like CSS and HTML?
i'd argue those are not so much "formatting" as "design" and "layout". there's elements of formatting but for the most part they fill a different role
bbcode is almost strictly formatting though and it's nearly a subset of html though so i may be talking out of my own rear end
mostly i just hate whatever wikipedia-and-friends use
Oh, the wiki markdown?
Yeah, it's annoying. I just want to use SE markdown everywhere forever.
21:03
like i'm trying to find other articles that do the stuff i want to do and go to their edit page because that's easier than learning it through the normal channels
@AlexA. Better now?
@flawr What is it?
somehow does not work, still the old icon=/
Shows up on your profile but I guess it hasn't updated in chat yet.
so well, time for some guessing=)
any idea?
21:06
Uh, creepy lizard? :P
very close
Haha
Snake?
Nope, not a snake, but close too
Skink?
* googling what a skink is *
21:09
@AlexA. In ???, is it intentional that calling print on a cell currently set to an unprintable prints the hex? e.g. 3 -> "0x3"
nope it is not
@BrainSteel Yeah, that's in the print_cell function.
Does ordinary BF do that?
I have no idea whether that's a good idea or not; I took it from the BF code I was going from.
I believe so but you would know better than I would.
The particular implementation I was looking at does.
Alrightio, I'll keep it in mind :)
21:11
it only exists to be linked to in the article i'm writing
For pb?
That is a very useful page.
(Which I'm assuming stands for smooth peanut butter)
yes, and yes
paintbrush, actually, but peanut butter was a massive inspiration
Smooth, I hope.
21:12
as it is with all other endeavours i persue
smooth is my favourite but i don't neglect chunky, it has its time and place
@flawr Komodo dragon?
@undergroundmonorail Agreed. I mostly neglect chunky to bother BrainSteel. :P
@BrainSteel Doesn't mean ??? has to do it. I have no feelings about it whatsoever so go crazy.
ಠ_ಠ
@BrainSteel Haha I made an iPhone keyboard shortcut to insert that face.
I had to search for it.
@AlexA. no, far away from that=)
21:15
@BrainSteel disapprovallook.com?
this guy on the picture (well not this exact guy) lives in my backyard
every time i want to type "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" i google "shrug emoticon" and copypaste from the first link, which is an article about how you don't have to google "shrug emoticon" and copypaste every time you want to type "¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
@flawr You have a guy living in your back yard? :O
Perhaps it is a girl, gender it is difficult to determine on those.
I don't know reptiles very well at all. It's unlikely that I'll guess it anytime soon.
21:18
It does not have any feet but is not a snake
I do not even know what it is in english 0.o
let me google
anguis fragilis
blind worm
slow worm
thats all I can find=)
Anguis fragilis, or slow worm, slow-worm or slowworm, is a limbless reptile native to Eurasia. It is also sometimes referred to as the blindworm or blind worm. Slow worms are semifossorial (burrowing) lizards, spending much of the time hiding underneath objects. The skin of slow worms is smooth with scales that do not overlap one another. Like many other lizards, slow worms autotomize, meaning that they have the ability to shed their tails to escape predators. While the tail regrows, it does not reach its original length. They are common in gardens and can be encouraged to enter and help remove...
What made you choose that?
As I said, they live in my backyard, and were my favourite animals when I was a child=)
Good choice then :)
ANNOUNCEMENT: flawr is now a slow worm.
The animal avatar bunch is clearly superior to the fractal avatar bunch. :P
@flawr Out of curiosity, how old are you now? (You don't have to answer if you'd prefer not to, just wondering.)
21:34
Yay! I learned yield return in C#
@Doorknob I did an answer in Ostrich earlier. :)
@Rainbolt Hooray! I've seen it but never used it.
Nobody likes my CoffeeScript guesses...
@Dennis ?
I've cracked two answers that work in CoffeeScript, but both authors labeled them as JavaScript afterwards.
I didn't guess JavaScript because one only works in a specific and the other contained a random error that made it invalid in JS but still valid in CS.
21:45
The author of the second one actually edited his code to make it valid JS. It was a lot more interesting as a CS answer, IMHO.
I thought part of the challenge was not editing the code. :/
@AlexA. why? :P
@Doorknob ಠ_ಠ
It's a fun language!

@NewMainPosts I am totally doing this in Snowman after I finish my homework
21:52
@AlexA. Does a single quote in ??? reverse the meaning of the next " or of all that follow it?
@Dennis Supposedly just the next " but I don't really know.
@Doorknob I tried doing something in Snowman earlier today and I got too confused and gave up on it.
mission accomplished
Haha
@AlexA. I'm trying to make sense of >,[>,]+[<[-<]>[>]>[<-[>]<.>>]<<+]. The directions seem of with both interpretations of ' and it doesn't work for me.
@AlexA. about e^pi
(And you?)
22:00
@flawr Turning one quarter century next month.
@Dennis What happens? Error?
Infinite loop.
Hm.
Does that code work in BF?
@AlexA. when is your birthday? (just asking that we can have a song rehersal)
Pfft, I posted the Brainfuck code...
This is what doesn't work: ;?"';?"."-"',-";"';";"-,"';"-!;;"--."
@flawr ceil(e^3-e)
22:03
AKA your Sign that word! answer.
@Dennis So the BF code works and this doesn't in ????
@Dennis Right
Yes. I've tested the BF code on Brainfuck.tk and yours with qqq.
@AlexA. do you know mrob.com/pub/ries
Well cu everyone sleep is calling=)
@flawr Goodnight!
@flawr I don't know that but it looks neat
@Dennis Well shit on a biscuit.
Looks like I have some fixing to do.

Q: Finding the Value of Words!

TreFoxIntroduction In the land of [Insert cool name here], people don't buy things with money, because everyone has a severe allergy to paper. They pay eachother with words! But how is that? Well, they give each letter number values: a=1,b=2,c=3,etc. (With some other special rules that will be de...

22:30
@Dennis I'm stumped. Just deleted the answer. :/
Seems like it should work.

Q: Algorithm to permutate set of N non-repeating elements

amphibientGiven a variable set of N non-repeating (unique) elements, write a program, preferably in Java or Python, to list all the permutations of the set. Example for set (A, B, C): A B C A C B B A C B C A C A B C B A The only input variable should be the set, which can be of ...

@Geobits "Criteria" is plural. The singular form is "criterion." ;)
Thanks. I've now removed the 'a' instead of changing it for petty reasons :P

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

PyrrhaInstant Runoff code-golf or maybe underhanded It's the election! If you're unfamiliar with how instant runoff works, I'll let my good friend Dennis the...

@AlexA. I added lots of things to my BF interpreter (and a ??? parser for it). Github repository
@BrainSteel Awesome!!
Also, just run make to build it, it should work :D
Do you not have Git on your Mac linked to your GitHub account?
Uhh... Maybe.
23:34
On your commits it shows the grayed out little GitHub octokitty (or whatever that monstrosity is) rather than your avatar.
Zero hours since you last said something mean about someone
I'm not sure I know what that means.
@trichoplax D:
poor Octokitty
It's a soulless beast.
23:36
Monstrosity isn't an affectionate word? Looks like I have a couple apologies to write...
I didn't say it was undeserved, just that it was mean :P
@BrainSteel Don't worry - it can be affectionate. Context is everything.
haha
@BrainSteel Just tried it out on the ??? test program. This is super cool. Much better than the C++ version.
Excellent work!
Hooray! And it has 4 different print modes for whatever you want :D Next language will be TinyBF.
Thank you ;)
@Pyrrha I managed to catch a glimpse at your comment right before it was deleted. ;)
I did say I was gonna take a long drive today... what I didn't know was that it was exactly 1024km.
23:42
@MartinBüttner Do it once more and you'll win 2048.
please don't make me :(
I'm not sure I would call it better, per se. The first one worked!

@BrainSteel This one works better, probably because my hands never touched it. :P
23:49
I doubt that very much.
Well Dennis and I were chatting earlier about some ??? code I wrote where the equivalent BF code works as expected but ??? goes into an infinite loop.
I was wondering if maybe it was an issue with the interpreter, otherwise I really have no idea why they would be different.
@Sp3000 nice job cracking Treehugger :)
Hmmm... Does it work in the C interpreter?
I'll check
23:52
@MartinBüttner Now I just need to get grc's, survive another few days, then I can be first out of the gate :D
... both pretty hard
I don't think I'll have time to look into yours thoroughly before it becomes safe
@Sp3000 I'll have to crack yours. I have time tomorrow :)
Somebody should crack mine! I'm so amazed it hasn't been cracked yet!
Just make sure you give me enough time to write a primality tester before it gets cracked :P
@BrainSteel Says mismatched brackets
Code: ;?"';?"."-"',-";"';";"-,"';"-!;;"--."
If it has mismatched brackets, I don't know why the C++ interpreter doesn't pick that up.
Supposedly equivalent to this BF: >,[>,]+[<[-<]>[>]>[<-[>]<.>>]<<+]
23:58
new idea for an esolang: the source code is a maze (of single-character commands). whenever you reach a junction, the direction is determined by the sign of some significant value. should allow for some interesting control flow. the main open question is how the (linear) language actually works. it could be as simple as BF with [], or something stack-based I guess.
@AlexA. Ah! Looking at just the brackets, we have " ' " " ... which translates to [ ] ] ...
@MartinBüttner That almost sounds like Befunge with automatic turning at non-junctions :P
