You don't want to overdo them
For those who are wasting their time doing nothing in chat: pythonchallenge.com
@AlexA. Mm they're really tasty
:D
It's my first posted challenge. I hope people like the flavor.

Q: ASCII Collision Detection!

MCMasteryIn this challenge the goal is to create a rectangle-rectangle collision detector based on an ASCII input. The program should return true if the rectangles intersect and false if they don't. Example 5x4 rectangle: ***** * * * * ***** Rectangles are built of asterisks. Examples: Input: *...

@Doorknob @BrainSteel @Maltysen : The dosas have come to life.
22:22
You didn't tag it ... :P
(please don't do that :D)
@Sp3000 i starred your message but it's not enough. thank you for referencing ace attorney. would it be weird if i said i loved you?
@Doorknob I knew I'd get hit with a fish of some kind, be it a trout or otherwise.
Should I link to largedosas.freeforums.net?
@AlexA. Link one of the periods in a sentence or something to that, just randomly in the middle of the post. :P
@Doorknob Done.
22:50
let's try that again...
@trichoplax I think you're overestimating the divide between computer graphics and computer vision as communities. I have a feeling that a lot of computer vision research is done by computer graphics departments as computer vision is often quite naturally the inverse problem to certain challenges in computer graphics.
Additionally there are often nice synergies, e.g. when people want to recover lighting properties of objects from camera data for use in synthesised images later on.
However, I can get behind the argument that questions will likely be about one thing or the other, which means that splitting shouldn't be a problem. But I think the overlap between the communities will be fairly large.
@MartinBüttner Is it possible to escape newlines in replacement strings for retina?
(that's a link)
It's a very unhappy link
if you want newlines, you'll have to avoid -s mode
Hm... I don't know what to think about this site
Sure it's a valid SE site... Just seems a bit risqué
23:01
@BetaDecay Doesn't have to be.
Wait was that to me or Martin @AlexA.
As long as it's kept professional like any other SE, this could be a great addition to the internet. ;)

Q: Code me a cookie

Basset HoundChallenge Code an ASCII cookie of a kind according to the input. Input The cookie kind. This is one of the three strings: "Plain", "Chocolate", or "Nuts". Output An ASCII cookie. Must be ___ / \ | | \___/ for Plain input, ___ /. .\ | . | \___/ for Chocolate in...

Hm I see haha.
Night everyone
23:04
@MartinBüttner An important addition, really. A place for people to go to get answers to sexuality-related questions in an environment that's designed to handle such questions in a professional, non-judgmental manner.
@BetaDecay Night? It's only 4:00pm.
Goodnight. :P
@AlexA. Yeah, that.
That was more to @BetaDecay than you. :P
(Even though you were pinged.)
Yes, but you said what I meant to say, so I wanted to back that. ;)
@MartinBüttner I definitely think there's a lot of overlap, but I still think there's a lot more that's not in common. I get the impression the overlap is less than it used to be as computer vision moves towards more organic inspired approaches. I'd love to see close cooperation between the two sites but I can't see them as one.
23:11
@AlexA. My first response was meant to be a joke, by the way. I laughed reading that line in your text, and thought i'd bring attention to it
@LivingInformation I know. My reply was also a joke. :)
@MartinBüttner Ideally I'd like to see the opposing side in an answer on Area 51 though - at present the upvotes on my answer don't mean much as it's the only option, and not everyone uses downvotes on meta.
@trichoplax I would write one, but what I wrote to you above is only my own impression. I am not (yet?) a CG researcher, but I've recently noticed this overlap in two different cases. I don't exactly have any real experience in the field to back this up with though.
@MartinBüttner Well those 2 cases are 2 more than I have so I'm definitely not qualified to have written the answer I did...
23:15
@PPCGMods I'd like to file a formal complaint against World Big Dosa. It is highly discriminatory against waiters with missing limbs. I feel this is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and await your response.
@Geobits I would superping PPCGMods for you, but it appears that user doesn't exist. Sorry. :(
Brb, need to make a sock puppet
@Geobits +1. All pairs of legs should be able to have a job in the restaurant business. Its basically killing the American Dream™ if they can't.
@MartinBüttner I'm mostly basing my opinion on the extra fields listed for Computer Vision - things like machine learning seem to add quite a lot to the scope. Then again I think GPGPU adds quite a lot extra to the Computer Graphics scope, so perhaps extending it in both directions could work. My intuition is that they will work better apart, but I wrote my answer hoping to prompt further discussion, but things seem a little quiet since we hit 100%
@Geobits (That said I don't see any discrimination against waiters with missing limbs. It's only talking about fractional waiters. If you don't think that people with missing limbs are still full people, you're being offensive here. :P)
23:18
:D
My better half disagrees with you.
just subtract 1/5 of a person per limb missing, easy
It's only a flesh wound...
At least he didn't turn into a newt.
What's wrong with a new T? Better than an old T, right?
23:22
@Geobits Well, there's a very old T... A new T would be preferable.
T object = new T();
^ this doesn't seem to work :(
Maybe it got better
@MartinBüttner Surely you can at least agree it's discriminatory to some people?
(not quite on topic, but what ever happened to this guy?)
@Geobits This is assuming that anything in The Nineteenth Byte is on topic.
Also who is that guy?
We have many, varied topics. That didn't quite fit any of them I've seen (to date).
23:29
Which makes you a trailblazer.
He's from The Oblongs, a ridiculous cartoon from some years back.
The Oblongs (stylized as the Oblongs...) is an American animated television series created by Angus Oblong. The Oblongs premiered on The WB on April 1, 2001 and was later removed from on May 20, 2001, leaving five episodes unaired. The remaining episodes were later aired on Cartoon Network's late night programming block Adult Swim. The series is loosely based on a series of characters introduced in picture book entitled Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children. It was produced by Jobsite Productions and Mohawk Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, and the...
^ for interested parties
Apparently "some years back" == 14 years ago. :P
Hmm, I must have seen it in reruns, it definitely wasn't that long ago that I first saw it.

How old do you have to be to think "Oh look, I found another corner of the Internet where I can ask for free cards."?
I'm thinking 8
I didn't really know what the Internet was when I was 8. >.>
I'd go with 12
The first time I was introduced to the internet was after I had left home.
^ meaningless without some frame of reference :P
Could have been 1976
Oh of course. I left home in 1999.
23:55
I'm going to university in september and it'll be the first time I'm living somewhere without my parents
The thing I am most scared about is "what if the internet sucks there?"
Haha
I hate to break it to you, but the Internet sucks everywhere.
okay, yes, i've been to 4chan. i just meant my connection to the internet
:P
(this is a joke)
Just download wikipedia before you go
*print
you never know
Oh yeah...
23:58
Did anyone else print MapQuest directions?
@MartinBüttner (although that's better done at university - expensive at home...)
@AlexA. my granddad.
i'm not even worried about the internet for respectable reasons like research or knowledge, it's just that
@MartinBüttner Mine still does it. :)
most of my time practicing super smash brothers melee is over netplay
without netplay how am i supposed to become good at super smash brothers melee for the nintendo gamecube
23:59
