11:00 PM
@ChrisJester-Young: Have you started at SE yet?

@AlexA. Yep, this is my third week there.

Awesome! How are you liking it?

It's great!
You should apply there, if you haven't already. ;-)

I did but I didn't get the job.

Oh noes! Which role were you applying for?

11:01 PM
Uh
Data Science Engineer
Haha is that the position you got?

@ChrisJester-Young What were your prerequisites for the job?

@AlexA. I'm a core dev, because that's the position they were trying to poach me for about 3 years ago.

:D They finally got you!

@TheBestOne Not understanding what you mean by "prerequisites" here.
@AlexA. Yes, after a very long time (long story, but it was not the right time back in 2012).

@TheBestOne: Do you mean what were the qualifications for the position?

11:05 PM
Yes.

Well, regardless of the journey to get there, I'm glad you're there now and enjoying it.
I'm sure they're happy too--they scored!

I'm currently trying to figure out the easiest way to host some kind of server for that continuous KOTH idea. I'm assuming someone in this room knows how to do that very well?

@TheBestOne The job description is here: careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs/34229/…
@PhiNotPi AWS! :-P

Haha
I think that would get expensive

@AlexA. Yes, I hope we have a long and mutually-beneficial work arrangement.
@AlexA. AWS, expensive?! Surely you jest.

11:07 PM
If it's going indefinitely?
It's inexpensive short-term.
Granted I don't have a whole lot of experience with it.

@AlexA. If it's not doing jack, it's not expensive. I have a micro EC2 instance that does nothing, and it costs me $0.40 per month.
(Forty cents.)

Didn't know! That's really cool!

@ChrisJester-Young Wow. It looks like they don't even require a degree.
But being a good programmer is required.

I love that SE doesn't score 12/12 on Joel's own scale. XD

@TheBestOne Yes, the bar is very, very high. But having a degree is not part of that bar.
@AlexA. Correct. Isn't it nice to be able to be honest, rather than having to pretend to be 12/12? :-P

11:11 PM
That's for sure!
Unfortunately I think the bar was too high for me for the position I applied for. I had the education but all of my experience is in the world of clinical trials using a dumb, ancient language called SAS.
Seriously though, PSA: Don't use SAS.

@AlexA. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Okay, I should explain why I laughed so hard.
1. I'm a statistics major at the University of Auckland, where R was invented. R is, of course, a rival to SAS. I actually contributed code to the R core back in 1999, when I was a student.

Oh nice!! I love R!

2. I actually still like R a lot.
3. SAS is headquartered in the Triangle, where I currently live.

I freaking hate SAS.

4. SAS employs a lot of people in this area. I know multiple people who work at SAS.

11:16 PM
Okay, regarding the continuous KOTH idea, let's hypothesize that I'm a broke high-school student. What's the easiest way to host something, if that situation were to happen to me?

@PhiNotPi Get sponsorship from a local company, then try again.

@PhiNotPi: Haha "let's hypothesize." Yes, let's.
@ChrisJester-Young: Are you currently a stat major? Doing a distance program or something?
@ChrisJester-Young: Nvm, you said you were a student in 1999

Undergraduate, masters, PhD?

So, basically, it's not going to happen?

11:19 PM
@PhiNotPi: Anything is possible if you believe.

@AlexA. Bachelor with honours (2:2). I was too crappy of a student to be admitted any higher up.

What's 2:2?

Maybe with openshift? I don't know if something like this could be made to work there, but probably...

@MartinBüttner: Hello!

@AlexA. Second-class honours, second division. It's the type where you can't advance to PhD with (unlike first-class or second-class first division).

11:22 PM
@ChrisJester-Young: I don't know of an equivalent in US universities, but then again I wasn't a good enough student to be in honors.
@Calvin'sHobbies: Hello!

@PhiNotPi openshift.com

@Calvin'sHobbies: ?

A grunt like that is not an uncommon greeting from me irl

I have some new 100-round Red vs Blue results.
2/97/1

11:24 PM
@PhiNotPi Get a job :P
@PhiNotPi Sniff sniff...

@TheBestOne: Why are you sniffing @PhiNotPi?
@PhiNotPi: When I said "believe," I meant it: youtu.be/HRz4SkLDBOY?t=3m

@AlexA. hi!

@MartinBüttner: How is a life of moderation treating you?

So far, I spent most of it with family and friends, away from a PC :P

That sounds great!

11:28 PM
@PhiNotPi what the a/b/c denotes?

Red wins, Blue wins, ties

@PhiNotPi: WOW. The blues are absolutely crushing the reds!

I see

@PhiNotPi, @Sp3000: Your twin bots are unstoppable juggernauts. Really great work!

11:31 PM
how often your paired up bots die?

@randomra that's why I was thinking Unary, but it doesn't specify what the interpreter does with non-0 characters in the source.

@randomra Whenever at least 5 reds attack it all at once.

@MartinBüttner writing a just row&block-correct unary/lenguage seems interesting
@MartinBüttner CH writes characters so if an interpreter doesn't handle all unicode as single char, you can do it with 2 characters in that language
if you want to strech the rules

@Calvin'sHobbies: Two of your challenges are in the top 10 in all of PPCG history! data.stackexchange.com/codegolf/query/297126

@AlexA. Anything wrong with sort by votes? :P

11:41 PM
@Doorknob: Nothing at all, I was justing messing around with the neat online SQL interface.

@AlexA. Haha, I know. Tell me how many times I've been on the hnq list more than other users. That's a stat I'd like to see

@Calvin'sHobbies that should be adjusted for the number of questions you've asked :P
like an HNQ rate

@Calvin'sHobbies, @MartinBüttner: I'm on it.

@AlexA. Don't bother. HNQ history isn't stored.

11:45 PM
@Doorknob, @Calvin'sHobbies, @MartinBüttner Update: Not on it.

No 2010 languages?

@Doorknob: There's been a lot of (well deserved) praise and attention focused on Martin lately given his election as the new moderator, but I just want to let you know that I--and I think I speak for the PPCG community as a whole on this--greatly appreciate your invaluable efforts as well! You've helped make this site what it is today, and what it is is awesome. So congrats to you too! :)

@Calvin'sHobbies: Fun fact: Programming didn't exist in the year 2010.

@Doorknob You opened the door for us

Cue the pun trumpet
Sorry, I meant trombone
