@grc Saw your negative code submission. Does this mean that a="12345";*b=a is better than a="12345";b=list(a)? :o
Oh wait I think it needs to be (*b,)=a, but that's still shorter
grc
grc
@Sp3000 I guess so
*b,=a works too
06:07
Woo shorter!
Maybe that could be a tip to add :)

Is it just me or do most CJam programs look exactly the same?
I swear I've seen this: ri{)__s_W%=*mp!}g many times before...

12:43
is this a new sort of spam?
I was wondering that myself... I saw it being self-deleted about 10 seconds after it was posted though so I'm very confused
Oh that's why I can't find it
What was it?
@Sp3000 there are actually two of those
@BetaDecay nothing
asdasdasdasdad and one has a blue image
the user also signed up to SO today, but I don't know how to find out if he pulled the same thing over there
Correction: Saw both of them being self-deleted within 10 seconds :/
but if it was spam I'd at least expect the user profile to contain a link or something
@Optimizer btw, your 4x4 approach actually only needs 10 bytes, but I wasn't able to shorten it any further, or adapt it easily to print out to more characters on the 4x4 grid. one can also print an odd-numbered checkerboard with 8 bytes, but that doesn't fit into 3x3 ^^
(unfortunately my code for that doesn't work for even sizes)
12:48
Should we edit down the deleted post to reduce clutter or keep it as is?
no clue.
maybe @Doorknob has some means to investigate if this is spam or not?
13:28
@MartinBüttner Nah, just gibberish. Flag it as offensive/abusive if you see him posting the same thing again.
13:41
Oh I see Beta Decay edited the [1-N] question
You know, when they say "The function must not use loops" I always wonder how exactly to define a "loop"
the edit doesn't address Peter's and my concerns (apart from the winning criterion)
I couldn't resist signing up on skeptics any longer. I had to upvote

That question title.
@MartinBüttner how in 10 bytes ?
Oh, not without changing the output, right ?
14:35
@Optimizer yes, using 4,
15:17
Hmmm how do we score characters in the extended ASCII (128-255) range? Do they count as a byte?

@Sp3000 sure, if the entire code fits in extended ASCII
Hmm k, because the byte counter you said you normally use seems to say otherwise, and I was wondering why that might be
@Sp3000 That byte counter uses UTF-8, not extended ASCII.
Ah k
16:20
@MartinBüttner Have you already been working on the controller of your solar system KotH?
@ProgramFOX nope
Any plans to do?
at some point... I'd like to work on one of the simpler KotHs first (Tetromino Game or Underwater Survival Game), but before doing that I want to get my Tetris Tournament ready, and I can't be bothered to write the process communication right now :D
wow, much things to do :)
yeah exactly ^^
17:18
Wow, the amount of answer that don't meet the spec for the Negative challenge is crazy... is it really that difficult to understand?
17:45
@Sp3000 As per the tag wiki, "If [the question] doesn't specify a character encoding to use for scoring, answers which use Unicode code points outside 0 to 255 should state the encoding used, and the score should include any penalty for flags or byte order mark required to get the interpreter/compiler to recognise the encoding."
18:15
@Optimizer I've got a 4x4 solution with only 10 nonspaces
hm, I just stumbled across the minmod function (again)... I think it would be a nice candidate for a simple code golf. it's a function of two real arguments. if they have the same sign, it returns the input with the smaller modulus, and if they don't, it returns 0.
18:47
@MartinBüttner You mean a valid solution ?
@Optimizer lol, yes
Now that you have revealed the fact , I will read your mind and post that answer too
just like i did last time
@Optimizer I'll give you until tomorrow to find it, if you want to look for it ;)
till tomorrow this time, right ?
...ish
say, 20 hours
18:49
k
y ?
I want my full 24 hrs
You had the question with since you posted in sandbox, I read it today only :P
I didn't attempt it myself until after Perl was posted, and I didn't look for something shorter than yours until an hour ago :P
boasting again :P
just saying... technically I could just post it ;)... I actually think this is still beatable
18:52
yeah, with some other language, but srsly, a 3X3 CJam is not possible at all
maybe not, but I think 4x4 with fewer characters might be
I'll start looking for it in an hour
after beating the RNA one
19:29
@MartinBüttner BTW, I posted explanation to the code in falling rocks problem.

ah, thanks for reminding me ;)

I really like how the final flood fill algorithm came out in that one ..

Martin BüttnerShortest Minmod Function code-golfmath The minmod function is a variant of the familiar min, which appears in slope-limiting high-resolution schemes for partial differential equations. For two variables, minmod(a,b) is defined as: 0, if a and b have different signs. a, if a and b have the sam...

19:58
@PeterTaylor Ah thanks. I didn't realise the tag wiki covered this
@MartinBüttner I want to minmod in FRACTRAN but it can only do integers easily :(
Just my own little bit of fun though ;)
20:16
@Sp3000 yeah, Marbelous can't compete either.

2 hours later…
22:10
@Optimizer nice work ;)
22:41
@MartinBüttner Exactly what you had ?
@Optimizer except SS+ -> S2* ;)
so exactly similar ;)
See, I can read your mind..
find a better one and tell me :P
:P
I'll try
23:09
@PeterTaylor too bad again ;)
/me shakes fist at @Optimizer
I think I can get it down further, need to sleep though
There you go, take that Perl!
I've found a saving to 40, so I can beat Perl
But I don't think I can save another 11
Oh, you have a tr function. That explains a lot.
So much wasted upvotes :(
;)
