Btw, does anyone know why do some SE sites support LaTeX and others don't? It could be really useful from time to time for the more mathy challenges on PPCG. Is it just some kind of switch the mods or SE staff would have to activate or does it actually require some patching the particular site? (Or does it work on PPCG, just not with $$?)

A: LaTeX on Stack Overflow?

Jeff AtwoodThis is implemented on http://math.stackexchange.com -- you can check it out there. It will never be on Stack Overflow, though, as it is an extremely heavy dependency. (See also Nick's investigations about impact in November 2013.) Info here: TeX math markup is sorely needed

I saw a post on Meta.SE about it some time ago. If there's enough call for it, it can be enabled. It's not by default because of increased loading time, etc.
Yea that one.

Ah right, thanks for the reference.

Oh, and right below that is a workaround meta.stackexchange.com/a/164286

yeah just saw it, cheers

7:03 PM
@m.buettner Alternatively, if you are lazy, you can paste unicode characters.

@Quincunx I know I've got quite a few of them added to my keyboard layout, because I'm using them a lot on study groups on facebook and in emails, but still, the possibilities are somewhat limited.

@m.buettner I love being a chatroom full of programmers from other cultures :) english.stackexchange.com/a/10815/72792

Alternatively, URL based image generation: meta.stackexchange.com/a/4159/212780

@Rusher haha, thanks for the link, didn't know that (and yes, I am living in the UK). That being said as the sign-off of an email I've seen American friends use it.

What do people in the UK think about Misfits? Is it less funny? I ask because some Americans (myself included) think British comedy is 10 times funnier because of the accent
That show was all the rage a year or two ago here

7:08 PM
I have no clue to be honest. The only British TV series I know is the original Coupling (which I find absolutely hilarious), but I don't think it's really popular here.

Well, you should watch it then! Just the first episode at least
The first season was the only one worth watching (because of Nathan)
Do you know who Robert Sheehan is?

nope (just checked his filmography... haven't seen anything)

7:24 PM
yo
My mom: make your bed
Me: make: *** No rule to make target `your'. Stop.

hi

it is getting zero votes
is there something wrong with it?

hmm
Quincux suggested not to do , but i disagree.

right and I pointed out that I had asked another question too
also I like fastest-code :)
other questions I asked got thousands of views
and dozens on points

7:36 PM
@Doorknob ping me if you want to discuss organising "the purge"

maybe I'll offer a bounty and see if that helps

IDK

thank you :)

Is user2179021 the same as Lembik?

@user2179021 sometimes you're just unlucky... I posted one challenge so far... judging by the votes it was quite well received but I only ever got one submission, even after offering a bounty.

7:38 PM
ah ok
that makes sense
thanks all

@Rusher o.O good question

2 votes :)

@user2179021 Also, what does "I need to be able to run your code" even mean? My brother can't run any code. I can run a lot of code. What can you run?

Probably code that can easily be run,
and installed/built

hey gents

7:43 PM
hey all
everyone is arriving! P

The challenge (or the tag even) could use a blurb like "I have to run your code in order to test it. A compiler for your submission must be freely available for [my platform]. If I ask you for one and you don't respond in 48 hours, I am not obligated to test and score your submission."

someone on SuperUser SE mentioned us! :)

Obviously written a little differently if it goes in the tag
Now that I think about it, I would put it in the challenge and not the tag. It might not be a good idea to put tons of non explicit rules behind a challenge

Does anyone else think it's time for sandbox Mk XIII? 27 answers + 5 deleted is quite a lot (in particular, more than a page)

If the sandbox were like a sandbox it would be more useful
Nothing I ever built as a kid on the beach stayed there for eternity

7:52 PM
What do you mean by that?

Some other kid came and knocked it down

lol, right
I think a stackexchange question/answer thread does just not provide the format for that

I can talk in here for a bit in ~40 mins
2

cool
I've seen someone's suggestion to just use some online markdown editor (e.g. a gist or stackedit) and post a link to it in the chat. I think that's actually a decent idea.

Could we abuse a chatroom as a sandbox?

7:54 PM
haha

Jinx

hi doorknob

Chat seems the other extreme. Unless there were a lot of people actively hanging out in there, you'd probably get less eyeballs on it. That, and the need to keep a list of links to transcripts handy.

Just post links in here

I HAZ AN IDEA!

7:57 PM
the advantage would be, if the chatroom has a few active users in it when you post, you can maybe reduce the hold sandbox period to a few minutes instead of a few days/weeks
go ahead

@Rusher it is....

What if DoorknobChatbot alerted everyone in here that a new challenge was sandboxed in the alternate chatroom?

........................

Then the whole crowd can go peek at it, tear it apart, and then move on.

sounds good to me

7:59 PM
mm. cool!

DoorknobChatbot I demand that you grow new functionality!
It's not working :(

For me at least, I'm not sure. I like to leave it sandboxed for a few days to get good feedback. For example, if certain people happen across it, I'm confident they will tear apart any ambiguous wordings, etc. I like to give it time to hit those users as well, not just "whoever happens to be in chat".
If I try to leave something in a chatroom sandbox, I don't foresee people looking at it a couple days later.

Rather than editing it in place, repost it.
But have a rule that says reposts must be significant or we'll hate you for spamming us

Okay, currently where the number of highly active users is very limited, I can agree with that. But if this site should grow (and I hope it does), you're not going to wait for a particular out of dozens of active users to look at your challenge, are you?

But that's just it. If I want to change some bit of ambiguous wording, I can't if it's been more than two minutes, and I wouldn't want to "spam" if it's only been ten.

8:02 PM
@m.buettner Depends. I've seen questions in the sandbox get two or three upvotes before I first see them, but still have flaws which I think are obvious.

@Geobits Don't you think that a little ambiguous wording could be discussed LIVE, in this room?
We're generally happy to talk about challenges in here

Don't get me wrong, I don't think having an additional chatroom sandbox is a bad idea, but I don't want it to eliminate the current style.
##Plus, markdown support in here sucks.

@Geobits that's why I said, put the actual challenge in a gist or stackedit, post a link, and discuss here.

Ok ANOTHER IDEA
We build an entirely new website called Sandbox

@Rusher Hm.
@Rusher If it's a light, customized site not running the StackExchange engine (as in it's totally different) then yeah. :P

8:06 PM
THIRD IDEA

@Rusher I think that would only attract a small, dedicated group. That may not be a bad thing, but I dunno.

Delete your freaking answer from the sandbox on meta when you go to post it.

@Geobits Perhaps it could have...benefits...
@Geobits Rewards across the network for participation.

@Rusher Still visible to people with rep above some threshold

Why do you think the sandbox doesn't work in the current form?

8:07 PM
I think that the current practice of replacing the body with a link to the posted question goes a long way towards this, though.

At least they'd move to the bottom if deleted, though. Probably better than just editing "Posted" in.

They don't move to the bottom.

The point I see is that most questions don't even go through the sandbox.

Really?

Really

8:08 PM
At least, not if you sort by "Active", which is the only sane way of sorting a sandbox.

@Geobits yeah
wait
what if new questions were forcibly made in the sandbox
xD

And we want to encourage users to use the sandbox.

Ah, my default sort is "votes" it appears, where it does move down.

@Howard or do we?

@Trimsty No forced sandbox. That sorta ruins the entire SE model.

8:10 PM
@Geobits It was a joke :P

@Geobits I massively shortened the gcd answer, it's based on yours but it might be different enough to be its own answer

I missed the xD

@Geobits ahk

All what's recommended here?

This chat really needs to be integrated into the mobile app.

8:10 PM
@durron597 Go for it as a separate one.

:S
unless it already has and i've missed it?

@m.buettner Some of the questions Doorknob posted after that meta post had obvious flaws which would have been fixed by the sandbox.
Some people may not like it, but it is useful.

@Trimsty No it isn't integrated, and I agree that chat on mobile is horrendous.

@PeterTaylor Yes, but I'm also not sure the current form is feasible in the long run, so I think it's worth thinking about alternatives.

I'm just thinking aloud here
but maybe instead of adding features, we should replace them
:P
the site's big enough as it is
The sandbox model doesn't fit the scheme very well :I
perhaps the wiki system is the answer?

8:15 PM
@Trimsty Unfortunately we didn't come up with an alternative yet.

@Howard yeah, I'm graphing out the site and trying to create an effective method, but I don't think there'll be one without some new special site functionality

Wait, if the only sane way to sort a sandbox is by "Active", why does it matter if there are 950 answers in it? Just, umm, don't look at the other pages. The thirty most recently active will show up there, in order. What more is needed?

A: Print the prime factorization of the greatest common divisor of two numbers

durron597Java - 184 This is inspired by @Geobits (and a little of @Tal's answer) answer, but enough of it is different that I decided to create my own answer. class G{public static void main(String[]a){Integer i=1,q,n=i.valueOf(a[q=0]),m=i.valueOf(a[1]);for(;m>=++i;q=0){for(;n%i+m%i<1;){q++;n/=i;m/=i;}S...

What on earth? You got a Java answer on almost the same level as Python lol

But the current system isn't that bad, it's just that occasionally a flaw is discovered and fixed and answers need to be edited. What about a post 'review mode' being the initial state, where answers are allowed but require, say, 500 rep until it's approved by somebody with, say, 5000 rep? :P

8:20 PM
@Rusher :)

Ninja ping!
Duplicate ping?
@durron597 You know you can edit your chat comments

I am still in the habit of typing @Rusher etc. instead of clicking the reply arrow
hmm, that too :)

@Trimsty because that would require a change in SE's privilege system?
I think we should try to look for solutions that can be realised within the framework SE provides as is.

@Trimsty That would be agains SE philosophy. I think we don't want an approval. It might discourage new users.

@m.buettner @Howard ...yeah, it would.

8:22 PM
I like the sorting by "Active" idea. All it takes is some common sense that I lacked 30 minutes ago to figure it out.

@durron597 Typing @user manually is wrong?! I've been doing it this whole time o:

@Geobits I had already typed "because", but I couldn't come up with anything... you might have a point there...

Wait why is that wrong?

wait, starred for that? since when? :P
o:

@Rusher well if you want to reply to an earlier message...
stop spamming the transcript whoever you are...

8:23 PM
I can't imagine clicking twice, then typing to reply. @autofill works fine for me.

(i don't want to post anymore in fear of getting starred unreasonably)
:P

@Geobits only one click (icon on the right, instead of menu on the left)
but yes, the mouse is annoying

I only have 1 star

@Rusher :c I haven't been starring things ;3

Ah, then make that once/twice :)

8:24 PM
I starred the blowjob face o:

xD

@Trimsty Applicable challenge: codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/26657

@Howard Looked at that, was intimidated, left

@Trimsty It's not wrong, it's just that SE, wikipedia links won't become chat bubbles and the person won't get to see what specifically you were replying to.
I'm trying to do it always to get in the habit of it.

8:26 PM
@durron597 Ah, thanks :P

@Trimsty Can't anyone else memorize what chat message number we're on? This one is 15396588
So ez

@Rusher Careful, I'm a walking calculator

@Rusher dibs on 15400000

(15392592 if you're correct o:)
'9259259259259292' is pretty catchy to say

Oh man it skipped?

8:29 PM
haha

yeah it seem to be all the chats at the same time?

15396684

@Howard To a byte-unconscious person as myself, the terminating newline in the 0th element in your answer to the aforementioned question is quite painful. :P
I never understood terminating newlines
@durron597 I get your point now. :I

@Trimsty useful for concatenating files/multi-line strings

@m.buettner I guess. But I'm one of those strange people that think if I wanted a newline there, I'd have put it there myself.
It creates confusion specifically with systems that don't have the last newline or files that don't. You never know whether it was inserted by some system or whether it's a legitimate part of the file...it makes it hard for developers, like how you can't get Unix time in C reliably :P
as Steve Ballmer once said, "DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS"

8:38 PM
@Trimsty that's what style conventions are for... so you know at least in your own projects what you're dealing with

@m.buettner Meh, just my opinion :P

oy

What if newline character was called instead "End of line"
It'd make much more sense then

@Doorknob oink
@mniip Yeah, newline is really badly named

hi @Doorknob

8:43 PM
Hello

nuuu, the bandage on my foot came off again :c
i'll make a code golf about it so that it becomes relevant to this chat to ensure that i didn't break the rules ;3

@mniip Another valid name is Line Feed

@durron597 Well, the escape character isn't \f :c

I've recently discovered that "newline" and "carriage return" are not the same thing.

@durron597 I'm not sure that name makes sense with non-Windows systems these days, because the carriage return is missing

8:45 PM
@undergroundmonorail Carriage returns are kinda useless. :P
@undergroundmonorail Except for making line breaks on Windows more stupid

@Trimsty The Windows vs. *ix newline discussion is CRLF vs. LF

@Doorknob so you said a lot of things need to be organised to deal with CT

@durron597 ninja'd

Indeed.

though, I suppose that newline = "whatever CRLF vs. LF is appropriate for your system"

8:46 PM
do you want to move that to another chatroom for people interested in participating, seeing this chatroom is pretty busy right now already?

cancels arbitrary stars
@m.buettner Yeah, good idea.

@durron597 That brings your earlier statement into question, actually, what if line-feed includes the carriage return if present and newline is just the \n character?

@Trimsty The only number I can keep in mind is 0118 999 881 999 119 7253

...and three!

9:20 PM
@howard why?

This one's pretty easy to remember :p
1234567891011121314151617181920212223...

Or 31415926535897932384626433832795028

@TheDoctor I think we have to send the link - or encourage folks to google it...

@TheDoctor Yea, but I can keep going on mine for as long as I want. Remembering over a few hundred digits of yours isn't nearly as easy...

Just 1111111111111111111111111111111111111111

Much better

Chatting on phone, wow

@Malachi nudge minutes to come back here

10:00 PM
When you "ungolf" code, do you change the structure? for example, if you removed curly braces to save 2 characters, should you put them back if it makes it more legible?

@durron597 The real question is, do you code golfed?
Most people start with readable code and then golf it, so ungolfing it was done to begin with

@Rusher in Mathematica, I do to some degree... my ungolfed versions are always manually ungolfed, because a few things are structural and I sometimes go with the terse version right away, to see if my idea is even feasible compaired to other answers

Q: Tips for ungolfing code

durron597I recently posted a Java golf that massively abuses for loop syntax to save a few characters. However, this makes it almost impossible to ungolf without changing the semantics (of the uncompiled code). Should I do so? Pros: Ungolfed logic is easier to read/follow Cons: Some of the golfing...

@Rusher anyway, this case is unusual because I started with someone else's golfed code and modified it considerably
bye room

10:24 PM
@Rusher I don't code golfed, but sometimes the process of golfing dramatically changes the way I'm doing something. I may move entire loops around, etc. Posting the original that doesn't resemble the golfed version (and might not even work the same way) is not an option.
I also don't keep a backup of ungolfed code, either. I write it, then golf it. There's no "ungolfed" version to paste in at that point.
