Q: Convert 256-warp brainfuck into 257-warp brainfuck

l4m2Usually each cell in brainfuck has 256 states, which is not enough to tell whether input is EOF or a character (usually \xFF). To fix it we can add one more state to it, and EOF (256) isn't mistake from a byte. Since outputting EOF is also not defined, . on 256 works as reading, and therefore , ...

Q: Can the Tune be Played?

LecdiCan the Tune be Played? Explanation A broken musical keyboard has keys labelled with positive integers. Q: Off-topic questions: could we require objective winning criteria?

ophactWe require that challenges have objective winning criteria, for reasons that have already been covered in various questions (in particular, see the link below). However, we receive many questions that do not have these criteria, and they are really annoying for many reasons. There have been a few...

@UnrelatedString okay, new syntax: ~ arg1 arg2...: code;

@GingerIndustries what about x,y->x+y; to denote lambda x, y: x + y

@PyGamer0 dafuq
Etch is a language that is designed to be easy to use, not a golflang.
explainxkcd be like

@GingerIndustries x,y->x+y; is much easier to use than lambda x,y:x+y
Python's lambda keyword is really annoying

^

Even Java has a nicer syntax for lambdas

2:56 PM
good thing I'm not using it then
~x y: x+y;

lets not talk about C++'s [](int x, int y){return x + y;} lambda syntax

I don't see how that's easier to read than PyGamer's syntax lol

I like it

Well, it's your language, that's all that matters :P

exactly

2:58 PM
@PyGamer0 That's not terrible though
Like, I can tell when looking at C++ code that that's a lambda even though I don't know C++

@PyGamer0 ಠ_ಠ

@user yeah better than python IMO
"⌽": attrdict(arity=1, call=x -> iterable(x, make_range=True)[::-1]),
"{": attrdict(arity=1, call=vectorised(a -> a - 1)),
^ that is better instead of the lambda
@GingerIndustries its like english but not quite english and you can talk to cats using it.

Is English tacit?

CMQ: What should Etch use for the command to print text w/o a newline?

print
and printing with a newline should be say
or puts

3:12 PM
or println

I already use out for newline prints
I need something w/o newline

@GingerIndustries print_without_a_newline :P
or outnnl

@PyGamer0 hell naw
I guess outnnl works

well yeah

should I change the title?

No, I think the title works fine
Titles dont really have to be a proper description of the task :P
Hell, I have a question titled "Speed of Lobsters" :P

The main requirement for a title is that it should be catchy/fun :-)

Q: A short, brutal riddle

Roland Left alone, I'm a word with five letters. I'm honest and fair, I'll admit. Rearranged, I'm of no use to trains. Again, and I'm an overt place, warm and well lit. What am I?

@LuisMendo Can joe draw this in one stroke?

Who's joe and why is he drawing things?

It's always Joe mama
but I don't know why he's drawing things

@mathcat Maybe clarify if the input can be empty (no lines). I would probably specify that cannot happen, as it's a corner case that doesn't add anything to the challenge

ah, thanks

4:49 PM
@mathcat I love that if you browse the tag, that is the score leader with 539 votes, then second is this with only 33 votes :P
That's such a massive dropoff :P

Q: Upcoming Feature Test: Ask Wizard for New Users

Yaakov EllisWe will soon be turning on an experiment on Stack Overflow which will test out a new Ask Wizard. The experiment will only target users asking their first questions on the site (to be more specific, questions that would qualify for inclusion in the First questions queue). The new wizard draws insp...

*jazz hands*

If this goes well and gets rolled out to all sites, it's either going to be super helpful for us if we're able to customize it, or will just make off-topic questions even worse if we can't

*jazz hands stops*

5:09 PM
> On what sites will the experiment be run?
Only on Stack Overflow.

> If this goes well and gets rolled out to all sites

@mathcat *negative jazz hands*

> Will this be offered on other sites in the future?

If the experiment is successful and the feature graduates, we hope to be able to adapt this to be an option for first-time askers on other sites. At that time we will try to determine what adaptations and customizations will be needed to allow the instructions to be relevant across different sites on the network.

SE tryna make up for their homepage screwover

I feel like the "Describe what was tried and what results were expected" is very specific

5:11 PM
Unlikely that we'll wake up tomorrow with this added to our site, but it's something to keep an eye on in 6-8 weeks
@mathcat People not doing that is what makes so many questions on SO low quality
"I'm trying to do X, but it isn't working" - what have you tried, what is "it" that isn't working, what's the relevant bit of your code, etc.?

@cairdcoinheringaahing another new one?
Didn't we just get one like two years ago?

Yeah, but that never worked in the first place

5:36 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing yeah, I just meant it's very specific to SO, I wouldn't see much use of that in 25% of the other sites (not that I know many, but eg. non-QA-sites)

IT'S TIME
THE PAKIDGE IS BEING OPENED

@mathcat yup
although as it turns out one of the parts I got is wrong
so

7:01 PM
what was in the pakidge again, I forgot?

@emanresuA it can't be worse (I hope)

You forgor 💀
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah :P
Unless they add it, turns out it isn't customisable, and don't remvove it for a few weeks.

What's our consensus on reposting/improving closed questions? I want to resurrect this one, but I kinda don't know how to go about it.

I'd just draft it in the sandbox. That question was 10 years ago, and very clearly close-worthy, with an author who hasn't been on the site in five years.
So I don't think it needs to be done any differently than a normal challenge

People don't care about staying safe that much anymore. A new pandemic would solve that. So do it

*pulls out purple button*
*plugs purple button into the Switch socket on the Machine*

@lyxal Uh, the usual solution to people not caring about staying safe is to try to remove the conditions that make them unsafe, not to create new unsafe conditions to scare them into caring about staying safe

do not do it
I will press this button

If it was still Summerish I'd understand, but it isn't

@lyxal here at the Far Side it's usually rather hot

Far Side of what? Your mom?

@lyxal It's so cold where Ginger lives that any temperature above 0 is considered hot. That's why Ginger considers lukewarm takes "hot takes"

are you measuring take temperature in Dankine or something
