A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

MrSiliconGuyImplement an HTML renderer code-golf ascii-art Note: This challenge explaination is very much incomplete - it merely contains ideas that will require revising to form a proper challenge post. The premise of the challenge is to write a program that take an HTML document as an input, and outputs an...

Q: Verify Tents and Trees solution

BubblerBackground Tents and Trees (try here) is a puzzle played on a square (or rectangular) grid, where the objective is to place tents horizontally or vertically adjacent to each of the trees, so that no two tents touch each other in 8 directions (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally) and the numb...

Remember how a while ago I asked y'all how y'all pronounce my username? Well I finally found a plain text word that TextToSpeech services pronounce it in the way I intended it to be pronounced: lyikxal
That's all I wanted to say
resume whatever it was y'all were doing

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

BubblerCounting King's Hamiltonian Paths through 3-by-N grid code-golf grid graph-theory combinatorics Background A Hamiltonian path is a path on a graph that steps through its vertices exactly once. On a grid, this means stepping through every cell exactly once. On a square grid, a Chess King can move ...

@Bubbler so you're taking the cumulative AND of the bits and comparing that to the original bits? nice approach, I like it

@Neil Yes, exactly.

CMQ: What math symbol do you most associate with randomness? I.e. random number, random choice etc.

@cairdcoinheringaahing ?

@Adám What part of the question confuses you? /s :P

The examples.

I was thinking either ? or x cause of Jelly and APL tbh

Also the use of i.e., that is, that is.
oh

8:57 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Not the other way around?

@Adám Well yeah, i was just listing things

🎲

@cairdcoinheringaahing tbf, ? isn't really a math symbol. If it isn't allowed, then !

@JohnDvorak oooh, yeah
@Adám It's for a random function in a language. I'm aiming to be as mathematically minded as possible, but I have as one of the commands so far so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@cairdcoinheringaahing If you're already using ? for something else, how about ?

9:00 PM
If emoji is an option, go for 🎲. Otherwise, ?.

@Adám Is that supposed to be a question mark in a box, or am I unable to render it

The third option would be r.

I have ? as a prefix command, but its still available as both postfix and infix

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes, it is.

So maybe a? chooses from a and a?b mimics APL

9:01 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Do you have postfix ! for factorial?

IIUC, non-renderable glyphs render as their hex codes in a box, not as a question mark

Then yes, postfix ? makes sense.

though an inverse question mark in a diamond is still used for invalid encoding?

@JohnDvorak Or as a box or as a black diamond with a white ?

9:02 PM
Kinda unrelated, but is a!b something in maths? I feel like i recognise it from somewhere

I think that's for invalid encoding only?

And I think Imma go for ?, thanks guys

@cairdcoinheringaahing a!×b?

@Adám No, as an infix command

@cairdcoinheringaahing it could be juxtaposition followed by prefix !... or suffix ! followed by juxtaposition.

9:03 PM
I don;t know why, but it seems familiar
Maybe something to do with combinatorics?

maybe something from combinatorics?
...

That's what it is in APL.

That might be it

Prefix ! denotes subfactorial

Wikipedia has meanings for !a and a!, but nothing for a!b

9:06 PM
It does in the computing section

In combinatorial mathematics, a derangement is a permutation of the elements of a set, such that no element appears in its original position. In other words, a derangement is a permutation that has no fixed points. The number of derangements of a set of size n is known as the subfactorial of n or the n-th derangement number or n-th de Montmort number. Notations for subfactorials in common use include !n, Dn, dn, or n¡.One can show that !n equals the nearest integer to n!/e, where n! denotes the factorial of n and e is Euler's number. The problem of counting derangements was first considered by...

> In APL, !x is used for factorial of x (backwards from math notation), and also for the binomial coefficient: k!n means n choose k

I guess it must be from APL where I recognise it
From way back when I was learning it

One day, I'd like to make a left-to-right APL variant, so nCk is n!k.

Ok, so I have a?, a?b and !a to implement. This was a fruitful discussion :D
@Adám I feel like that's Jelly but with the command characters swapped

9:09 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Hm, not really. Jelly doesn't have variadic built-ins.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Is your language ASCII-only?

@Adám No way
But I haven't bothered to use a custom codepage
You may have seen me answer with its predecessor languages before, Whispers?

@cairdcoinheringaahing OK, because then there are also single-char versions of ?! and !? and ?? and !! and of course ‽. And there are all the upside down ones too.

@Adám Yeah, I was thinking about for random, but it seems as tho ? would basically be a better choice
Like, if I needed ?a (already implemented), I'd consider using , but otherwise ? is just as good
And typeable to us who don't have an interrobang on their keyboard :P

Dunno if you need ? for other things, like the ternary, prepositional function names, etc.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Who doesn't‽
Man, missed opportunity: Who can't type ‽‽

@Adám Don't have ternary (aside from the IfElse command), or functions beyond the "standard" math functions
@Adám You do make a fair point :P

Any feedback for this?
