A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Kevin CruijssenBinary Numbers Magic Trick code-golfnumberskolmogorov-complexitymatrix The challenge is simply; output the following six 2D integer arrays: [[ 1, 11, 21, 31, 41, 51], [ 3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53], [ 7, 17, 27, 37, 47, 57], [ 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59]] [[ 2, 11, 22, 31, 42, 51], [ 3, 14, 23, 34, ...

CMC Given two integers a^(b^c) and d^(e^f) with all integers in the range 1 to 20. Output which is larger (^ is exponentiation)

So... it's actually given six integers, compose them into two with exponentiation then compare them

@UnrelatedString yes. I am writing a challenge for this now. I just need some way to specify that the code must terminate
is there a standard way to do this?

Pretty sure there's nothing stopping you from just saying "it must terminate", but there might be a relevant meta post or two
Give it some time on sandbox and any details like that should be ironed out

@UnrelatedString hmm.. the challenge is so simple I just posted it!
I hope it won't be controversial

9:49 AM
@UnrelatedString so.. if I extend to to 4 variables on either side, is it still simple using logs?

Probably but I've not even tried to solve it yet

Q: Which big number is bigger?

AnushInput Integers a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, b3 each in the range 1 to 20. Output True if a1^(a2^a3) > b1^(b2^b3) and False otherwise. ^ is exponentiation in this question. Rules This is code-golf. Your code must terminate correctly within 10 seconds for any valid input on a standard desktop PC. Y...

That's a good design

9:54 AM
it's slightly rude isn't it?
not in a bad way :)

Considering that a lot of golf languages used on PPCG do not have scopes, I'm not sure curly brackets are the most appropriate symbols to use in our icon

...good point

As for the APL symbol, since PPCG is not APL-focused, I don't see why it would be in our icon either

Especially when it's just one symbol in the braces, that sort of goes against what golf is

@Fatalize Curly braces are not just used for scopes. Some languages use them for lists, some for objects. They are just the most "code'y" type of enclosure.

9:59 AM
Well either way having a concrete suggestion is going to move the process forward for actually arriving at "the" icon

@Adám Sure but the point is that many languages we use here don't use those. They feel too stereotypically "programming related" to me, and are kind of overdone
The green and gold combo is nice though, I hope we get that kind of colors in the design

@Fatalize Very true. Difficult to find something that generally suggests programming. Lots of images online use things like </> which is even more cliché. And HTML/XML isn't even a valid programming language for most of our challenges…

(Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why Skeptics.se uses square brackets for their logo)

@Fatalize Maybe those are Iverson Brackets that evaluate true/false statements.
(why does emacs.SE use parentheses in their logo?)

lisp (I think)

10:07 AM
Another idea for characters in our logo would be [:)] which with unbalanced parens suggests our more esoteric side, and has a smiley to suggest the recreational aspect.

@LuisMendo I don't think I understand the point about orders of inputs
can someone explain "@Anush Imposing a specific order of inputs it not common at all. You should specify that very clearly in the text –" to me please

AnushThis question is tricky, for those who like more challenging puzzles. Input Integers a1, a2, a3, a4, a5, b1, b2, b3, b4, b5 each in the range 1 to 10. Output True if a1^(a2^(a3^(a4^a5))) > b1^(b2^(b3^(b4^b5))) and False otherwise. ^ is exponentiation in this question. Rules This is code-...

@Anush Author of the above question

got you

@Anush Because your challenge is tagged code-golf yet is not a code-golf challenge
Solving your problem in and of itself is extremely easy (and is basically the same as your previous challenge in terms of golfing, so it's boring). 99.99% of the difficulty comes from your arbitrary requirements on execution time
Either remove the constraint, but then it's a duplicate of your previous challenge, or change the challenge to "fastest-code"

@Fatalize Simply writing code that terminates at all before the heat death of the universe is not easy

Q: Probabilistic approach challenge

rv7A few hours earlier, I got this puzzle: Suppose, you toss a coin n times, then what the probability of getting m number of heads? ( where m is the set of all prime numbers) For instance, take n = 2, then SS = { HH, HT, TH, TT } So, output is 1/4 (for HH case) Then, for n = 3, SS = { HHH, ...

@Fatalize I don't know how to specify that code should actually be runnable without giving a cut off. Is there a standard way?
@Fatalize I don't care how long it takes as long as it actually finishes

1:29 PM
@Anush Then why 10 seconds. You shouldn't care if it takes ten billion years

@Fatalize Well.. that's not the only problem. I want it to run on a real computer so it would also need an almost infinite amount of RAM if done naively
it's a coding challenge. It's hard to write code that will actually terminate on a normal PC

That's exactly my point, it's hard because of the time restriction
So it shouldn't be code-golf

@Fatalize I feel there may have been a number of other challenges like this
let me take a look
I vaguely remember them now
time and RAM restrictions I suppose
thanks

1:47 PM
@Fatalize I copied the way restricted time was handled in that other question now. Thank again

2:09 PM
hmm... even now correctly tagged it gets a downvote :)

@Anush IMO the question would be much better off as (same for your example). the point of the time limit is to disallow naive algorithms, but a time limit has other consequences. The question also is limited to languages in TIO which many (me included) hate. And you know TIO shouldn't be used for timing ಠ_ಠ

"Note that timing on TIO is not perfectly reliable, though while insufficient for fastest-code it probably suffices for restricted-time. – Laikoni Mar 28 at 10:55"
@dzaima also what complexity would you restrict it to?

@Anush that question allows non-TIO languages for one, but either way, as i said, i don't like it either

I also fear that mentioning complexity puts a lot of people off
ah, let me see how to allow non-TIO languages
thanks. I added the part that allows non-TIO languages
I will be very interested if anyone can actually solve the puzzle
it's not that easy

fast enough on any reasonable computer i can see people also not liking that. fast enough for what? And what if my computer is a quantum computer and I don't know that normal computers exist? :p

2:17 PM
@dzaima if that is your home PC then you deserve the points :)
ppcg is very hard to navigate. You might have thought copying an answer which people haven't complained about would be enough
I just copied that sentence from the question I linked to

@Anush the classical "if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?" :P

@dzaima someone might well have complained about that!
oooh.. an answer!!

oh i just noticed you've posted two pretty much exactly equal questions. that's probably the bigger reason for the downvotes

@dzaima except they are completely different!
but I am sure you are right too
what does @D do in the python answer?

@Anush they might be pretty different to do but it still feels pretty redundant. the 1st question isn't badly voted at all so the duplicatedness must be a big part

2:25 PM
@dzaima I don't understand why two questions which require completely different thinking and solutions would be regarded as almost duplicates
unless you just look at the text I guess and see the words are similar

@Anush it's not a duplicate per se. also PPCG, despite its name, doesn't really like puzzles. e.g. this question of mine (which, as I've found, has many approaches and mine hasn't been found) is at a +28/-7

2:41 PM
@Anush i have no idea - you're the one here that's supposed to know why the question is possible

2:56 PM
@dzaima :) What I meant was that as the input is bounded in size any algorithm on it is constant time
so it would need a different question for

@Anush ah right, forgot about that problem..

I am now looking forward to the 20 byte jelly solution :)

Q: The smart way to interleave two lists

nafhgoodI need to write an OCaml program that return all possible zip of two lists together while preserving the order of the element in each list. @EriktheOutgolfer That only applies to content from SE. You have to follow the reproduction requirements of the source. If the source doesn't say attribution is required, then you don't have to provide it (though you still should).
