10:00 PM
Because they assume Linux users are terminal gods
(I don't know why)

Thanks!

@Adám Why are the servers so slow?
Going at like 0.2 MB/s

@ATaco heheh RPROGN

@Mendeleev What servers, dyalog.com or github?

10:01 PM
@Adám dyalog.com

As long as it's not "that"

I would be asking someone else about github lol

@Mendeleev Officially, we have 20 up, boostable to 40 on request. Next year it will be 40 all the time.

@Adám Why not use a CDN? Just asking

<Insert posting unrealated images is off-topic quote>

10:04 PM
@Mendeleev I think it is because my.dyalog.com is also used to send confidential files to and from our customers, and we have very strict rules about where the data may be stored.

@Adám Makes sense. What about just using a CDN for the software, not the confidential data?

Thank you ^

(I didn't)

10:05 PM
Someone did

@Mendeleev Dunno. I'll ask the IT manager.

@Adám Also, the website is buggy - after you click download on one thing, you can't download something else until you refresh and wait a while. The nav menus at the top just display "Loading..." forever until you refresh and try again. ._.

@Mendeleev Now that's something I can report.

And there's also the nav bars occasionally disappearing.

@Zacharý Yup

10:07 PM
Termed "that"

@Adám Also, downloads take about 30 seconds to start

@Zacharý Wait, which site are you talking about dyalog.com or my.dyalog.com?
@Mendeleev That's terrible. I wonder why.

Not right now, but dyalog.com.

@Adám I don't know either. I think they just don't start until the last one completes.
Do you block parallel downloads or something?

@Mendeleev That could be why, but I have no idea why we would do that.

10:10 PM
That video shows all the problems I'm having

So ... many ... tabs.

Not that many

@Mendeleev That's a great help. Thank you.

I only have 5 open.

@Adám You're welcome

10:11 PM
Holy reddit.

@Zacharý How do you survive?

Well... I don't have 10 tabs of reddit, for one thing.
@Mendeleev How does your computer survive? My linux would die fast if I had that many tabs open!

I have SE chat, email, other email, yet another email, Slack, a story I'm reading, an xkcd comic, a couple of Github repos I was reading about, a Cisco download page, My Dyalog, the Nim programming language site, a bunch of Reddit, a few Wikipedia, the website of PAX video game convention, a Reddit newsletter, Nginx support, a WineHQ page, my ESXi interface, DigitalOcean, a couple of Arch Wiki, and Purism's products page.
That was two days ago O_o

give ur ram a break

@Mendeleev Text and video sent.

10:14 PM
Dmitry, does your computer even FUNCTION?

I didn't buy 16 GB for nothing
@Adám Thanks
@Zacharý What are you talking about
This isn't that many tabs ffs

What is "that many tabs" then"?

You should see my dad's computer. The tabs look like the ones in that image I just sent, but he has a 2560x1440 monitor instead of 1440x900.

I also have 16 GB. The only thing that can bring this monster to its knees is MSKLC.

Jim
@Mendeleev Beyond 10 tabs I force myself to close the unused ones, otherwise it becomes complicated to navigate

10:16 PM
@Adám Wait, the keyboard layout program?
How is that RAM intensive?
@Jim complicated...?
WTF
How

You can't even see the icons.

Jim
@Mendeleev My mind cannot keep track of more than ~10 tabs, that's why

@Mendeleev Yup. Everything grinds to a halt, even Task Manager cannot get enough resources to work.

@Jim Interesting
@Adám What. Why is it so intensive?
@Zacharý YOu can hover over the tab to get the title
Also, pinning tabs is a thing
I pin my frequently used tabs

If I need that many tabs, I usually have like 5 windows of 5 tabs at max.

10:17 PM
@Mendeleev I have no idea. I'd inspect the desk/RAM/CPU usage if the monitor program had enough resources to function…

@Mendeleev uhh what gtk theme is that i forgot the name

@betseg Windows 10 :P
With the Arc-Dark theme

o_o

@Mendeleev oh arc yea thx
it has a gtk version too

@betseg Yeha I know I use it on all my Linux computers

10:19 PM
try flat-plat, it looks cool too

How many Linuxes do you even have?

I have used it. I don't really like it O_o

Timezone w/o DST: strawpoll.com/1xcgg2e

I usually love Material Design

Jim
@Zacharý This again?

10:19 PM
^^me2

@Zacharý Let me count...
@Zacharý Counting servers and VMs?

Jim
@Zacharý That's the same as before?

8 hours ago, by LegionMammal978
I'll probably re-ask this throughout the day (every 3 hrs or so) to prevent bias

Counting servers, not VM's.

OK
@Zacharý What about virtual servers?

10:21 PM
ಠ_ಠ

Um ... 0.5 ?
Do not start ಠ_ಠ spaming.

@Zacharý Then 9.5
I have 7 Linux virtual servers and 6 physical machines AFAIK

Holy crap...

Might have more
Wait, do Android devices count?

I've got one linux, and a crappy windows that I never use.
Yeah

10:23 PM
Then more...

And an android.

then like 14.5

How on earth do you keep track of your files??

so I have most of my files on my desktop computer

Why do you need so many?
Why?

10:24 PM
I have some other files on my laptop
THat's just the big files and projects though. I use Google Drive for text documents.
@Zacharý I have one desktop computer, a main laptop, a backup laptop, my sister uses one of my laptops, and I have two servers

@ETHproductions, scroll up and vote on the poll.
Wait ... the one that wants a pug ?

I also have a server running ESXi (Not Linux) that has my ArchLinux mirror, a Cisco vWLC (Linux), an Asterisk phone server, and a DNS server (I think)

What distro(s)?

I also have 3 DigitalOcean VPSs. One to run dkudriavtsev.xyz/dk0.us/associated websites, one as a web server for inexpensivecomputers.net, and one as a MySQL server for inexpensivecomputers.net
@Zacharý Arch on desktops/laptops, Ubuntu on physical servers and DNS, Arch on Arch mirror, and proprietary-ish distros on the Cisco and Asterisk side

Propietary-ish?

10:28 PM
The Cisco one has no way to access a shell
The Asterisk one is probably Debian, but I'm not sure

>_< no shell.

@Zacharý done

Thanks!!!11!
Please don't kick me, my finger slipped.

Anonymous
@Zacharý We don't kick for small things that are clearly accidents. Only when a user's behavior is disruptive to the entire room would a kick be considered.

Okay, strawpoll above.

10:38 PM
@Zacharý Really? Sometimes I feel dismayed because Jelly appears superior to APL.

Yeah, but Jelly is unreadable and only meant for codegolf.
@Adám Wow. Dennis should be so proud:This comes from the man that "is adamant in many of his convictions, including that APL is by far the world's most superior programming language, and the only one worthy of being used day-to-day."

@Zacharý He should indeed. But then again, without APL, there would be no Jelly.

Mostly because without APL, there'd be no J.

@Zacharý Yes. In many respects, I'd concede that K is better than APL too. But as my group manager expressed it: K is superior to APL in many ways. Dyalog is superior to K though because of the environment. as a language, I think K is cleaner (at least given my limited understanding)

Question: I have a challenge name "dividing strings" but now that there is already a challenge named that does anyone have alternative suggestions?

10:44 PM
But then again, without APL, there would be no K.

"String division"
The superior language is Fortress. Fortress would've been love. Fortress would've been life.

@Downgoat Split/Chop/Cut/Partition

Anonymous
All of the above

@Downgoat Depends, what's the challenge and how does it differ from the challenge of the same name?

@Downgoat Text/Input/Data/Line/Sentence.
@Zacharý Version 1.0 of the Fortress Language Specification was released in April 2008, along with a compliant implementation targeting the Java Virtual Machine. Is it not available?

10:48 PM
Nope. They took it down.

@Zacharý

Rest In Piece a possible replacement for APL (@ Least for me)

@Zacharý Does indeed seem nice from a mathematician's point of view. Wonder how the performance was.

Yeah, I might re-implement it (or make a derivative) in the far future.
Like, far far far future.
Do you think it would be possible to get Fortress interpreter by contacting Java/Sun/Oracle?

@Zacharý Doesn't hurt to try, does it?

10:58 PM
hi

Okay, Xtra-PC failed, don't want to go into that.

Also, RIP SAX, the definitive APL.

It might exist somewhere ... just like JSSS.
A lot of dead amazing programming languages/implementations out there.

@Zacharý JSSS?

Java Script Style Sheets.
Basically CSS with JS syntax, made as competition to CSS.

11:01 PM
IE could do JS in CSS, non ironically.

Even classes and id's and stuff. It was weird.

I had an idea for a board game

Who would I contact for Fortress?

please stop with this had/(has/have) annoyingness

<insert look of disappointment>

11:04 PM
anyway, I have an idea for a board game

And ... that is?

well,
each player has 3 pieces
(let me draw a board with ascii)

Any other dead languages/implementations any of you liked a lot?

Q: Will I tip over?

DaffyOverview Given a 3 line string, figure out if the structure falls to the left, balances, or falls to the right. Input structure You can imagine the structure as metal rod with stuff on top, all being balanced on top of a vertical rod. 1 7 4 a =============== | The first line...

11:16 PM
I made a mistake. This doesn't belong here.

there are moving patterns

@Zacharý Can you dd?

Moving patterns are defined by the relative positions of the enemy pieces
There are at most 3 moving patterns at any time. also note that all pieces are leapers.

@Zacharý you can download FOSS Fortress here

so, in the initial board position, all of whites pieces can move to an adjacent orthogonal square, or jump 3 or 4 spaces orthogonally, because those are the relative positions of blacks pieces, and black has the same moves, because white is currently in an identical position, however white will probably not be in an identical position for long.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Jim Sandbox comments: This is work in progress This challenge is not clear enough yet, but I will rework that I'm open to all suggestions Setup the tribal totem for a perfect weather There is an Indian village. It has a totem: __ ___| |___ \/ \ ...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
THANK YOU

the furthest of blacks pieces are 4 spaces in a straight line, and some of them are 3 away, and two of them are right next to each other

@Zacharý You're welcome.

The goal of this game is to move one of your pieces adjacent to one of blacks pieces
in all honesty, I have not playtested this at all, and I might not be too surprised if white can immediately force a win on this board
actually did I say 3 or 4? I meant 2 or 3
ecks dee

I guess we won't hear from Zacharý for a while.

11:24 PM
Would anyone be interested in play testing this game?
also I was sort of considering adding the ability to remove an opponents piece, however that might make it too easy to force a draw

Honk.

Anybody here running Dyalog APL v. 16.0 on non-Windows?

also the idea for this boardgame came after thinking of an idea for a chess-type board game with only few similar pieces, so it would be easy to make a piece set for it, even out of precious metal
or if you just wanted to make a clay set
it would be easier because only 6 pieces
and a little bit of paint or size to distinguish team
I was also thinking about making different ranks that perhaps affect the game: maybe rank 3 can only use moving patterns of rank 3 enemy?

Anyone know how to download all of this:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080324115812/http://projectfortress.sun.com:80/Projects/Community/browser/trunk/ProjectFortress
The zip doesn't want to work: web.archive.org/web/20080119125304/http://…

@Zacharý Ancient zip format, incompatible with modern unzippers?
@Zacharý I've used addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/firefox/addon/downthemall succesfully in the past.

11:36 PM
Well, I'm not euphoric anymore, none of the files are archived ...

@Zacharý Aw, so close. ⍨

@10k-users Can you please take a scrolling screenshot of this with something like ShareX, and then post it?

I GOT IT!
Halp, it extracted directly in my home directory ...

It works though, since it came with an executable!

11:50 PM
nice

@Zacharý Can we get it on TIO?

I dunno about permissions and all that, and I'm assuming it's better than D at golfing (which is not good for golfing, it's the best C-style language I've found)

@Zacharý Permissions? It is FOSS!
@Zacharý You're running Dyalog 16.0 on non-windows, right?

No. Dyalog 14.0 I think.
(Student edition)

@Zacharý Oh, why not upgrade?

11:55 PM
I'll wait until after the 2017 student competition is over.
Seems like a nice date for installing v16

@Zacharý There are no differences between editions, except that the unregistered version has nag screens and no runtime executable (i.e. cannot generate stand-alone programs, dlls, etc.)

Doesn't the unregistered only work on Windows?

@Zacharý It is only available on Windows.

(I'm not goin' back to my Windows ... ever)

@Zacharý Nobody is asking you to. From 15 and onwards, Dyalog APL is completely free for personal use.
