Q: Greeting The User

Amurt4lCreate a program which when run displays the text below: )-*-*-*^_^*-*-*-( | Welcome User! | )-*-*-*^_^*-*-*-( Use any functions or language to answer this, have fun. Shortest code wins

@trichoplax Could you do a combination of colors and simple patterns/shapes?

I'm already using shape to a very small extent, but I don't want to use it elsewhere and detract from its current usage. I think I'm settled on just having multiple palettes now, but I'll be reading up on the various links in order to choose those palettes
Thanks for all the feedback - I'm glad I posted a second time now :)

8:21 PM
@NewMainPosts chaos reigns in that question

@totallyhuman Yep, freaked me out for a second. If my SQL code isn't a valid entry due to "not being a program", then there goes pretty much all my answers to all questions right there.
And probably my Minecraft entry, too.

hmm they are not getting the point
urp as soon as i said that
@StephenS Now I understand. — juniorRubyist 19 secs ago

How should I reply to ths: "@Mr.Xcoder I will abstain from this challenge. Thank you for grief."
?
I think I better don't

Don't bother

8:29 PM
Unless you feel it should be flagged, make no response at all. Once someone becomes passive aggressive they are probably best left to calm down alone

That was quite "savage"

@Mr.Xcoder Grief can be a useful emotion some of the time... but somehow I don't think that's what he's talking about here...

I didn't mean to hurt his feelings
just trying to make him understand the situation

i'm not sure they meant what they said

Ok
Forget it

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

carusocomputingKolakoski Reduction Overview Some of you might be aware of the Kolakoski Sequence (A000002), a well know self-referential sequence that has the following property: It is a sequence containing only 1's and 2's, and for each group of 1's and twos, if you add up the length of runs, it equals ...

@LegionMammal978 Adnan

CMC: write shortest code in C-style language to iterate through jagged 2d matrix. (have it call f() in example)

@Adnan Are there any characters in 05AB1E that I could use to test an extension of mine on a repo fork?

Can anyone who knows ruby explain this error to me?
./preproc:50: syntax error, unexpected tSTRING_DEND
    define_flags += "-D '#{sym}#{"=#{mac}" if def}' "
                                                  ^
./preproc:50: unterminated string meets end of file

8:33 PM
@Downgoat downvote for language specific.

It says there's an unterminated string but all the string are terminated

@Downgoat Also if it is a matrix it is 2D, but a matrix isn't jagged.

@Adám fixifingied

@Downgoat C-style‽

C, C++, Java, JavaScript, etc.

8:34 PM
@Downgoat What do you mean by iterate through? call f() on every item in the array or on every row?

That's a...really broad definition of C-style
If JavaScript is C-style so are Lua and Lisp

@ToxicFrog Lisp? I think JS is closer to C than Lisp.

@ToxicFrog wat how

@Adám on the one hand, dynamically typed garbage collected language with an emphasis on higher-order functions; on the other hand, no macros...
I definitely wouldn't call JS "C-style" regardless, though.

Sure it is
It has semicolons and braces and such

8:36 PM
That's just syntax.

@ToxicFrog DG probably means von Neumann languages.

(they also use curlybraces as block delimiters, after all)

What does gcc: warning: /dev/stdin: linker input file unused because linking not done mean
I'm only running the preprocessor

@Adnan (That is, currently unused characters)

I am specifically not running the linker.

8:38 PM
> because linking not done
Can I see the command?

@Phoenix you ran it with -c, so linking is not done, but one of the input files you passed it was something it needs to link, not compile
So it's warning you that you passed it something that only makes sense when linking but told it not to link.

My command is gcc -E -P o /dev/stdout /dev/stdin

@ToxicFrog C-style 96% of tiem refers to having a similar syntactic style to C.

It's autodetecting /dev/stdin as a .o or something.

wat

8:39 PM
@Downgoat that's cultural; in my usual haunts "C-style" means "having semantics similar to C" and stuff with curlybraces and semicolons is "stylistically Algol-derived" or similar.

gcc /dev/stdin works

@Phoenix you can jsut use -

@Downgoat You still have not answered what the arguments to f() should be. I.e. is it or f¨¨ in APL?

Halp how to run gcc -E /dev/stdin

wat ono is GTX 1070 not a thing anymore

8:40 PM
@Downgoat ?

@Phoenix also, is it "-o /dev/stdout" in the original command and just "o /dev/stdout" was a typo?

@Phoenix What's o for?

@LegionMammal978 outfile

Is GTX 1070 founders edition good graphics card
or is it just OK

It's -o

8:41 PM
Oh ok

@Phoenix anyways, you may need to use "-x c" or "-x c++" or similar, since normally it detects input type from file name
That tells it to treat input as c/c++ no matter what the filename is.

Actually nvm it was typo I accidentally typed -o into my own code even though I thought it was supposed to be o

Try it with -x then.

@ToxicFrog But the idea is that it should be arbitrary input, not any specific lang

I ran into similar issues trying to gcc in a pipeline and it's because it normally treats the input filename as the source of truth for the input file type.
Oh.
Good luck!
If you look at the man page, "Options Controlling the Kind of Output" has details on how filenames interact with source detection; the tldr is, it uses the extension, and anything without an extension (like /dev/stdin or /dev/tty) is treated like .o
AFAIK it has no provision for detecting content type from file contents, and in the general case this isn't even possible; there's lots of code that's valid as both C and C++, for example, but depending on which it is they have different ABIs and standard library search paths.

8:45 PM
Question is like 1080Ti like just 1080 with overlock

Ok, so problem solved by using cpp instead of gcc -E
However new problem

@Adnan May actually make it 2-char, just need to know if any/which ones are free

gcc -E does not want to output to /dev/stdout
It works with an actual file but not /dev/stdout

Doesn't it do that without an argument
(for output, that is)

Actually never mind, I forgot that ruby's `` swallows stdout

8:47 PM
@LegionMammal978 no, it outputs to a default filename, like a.out

@ToxicFrog Not with -E
Also, what's the problem with just gcc -EPxc++ -?

Oh right, forgot about that

cpp is exactly what I'm trying to achieve anyway, and it works well.

Okay, whatever works :)

Question: So I assume that people design challenges with a language (or type of language) in mind, is there a limit to how far this goes?
I mean, I clearly shouldn't do something like asking to output "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP3-CU7) (KB3205051) - 11.0.6579.0 (X64)" and then submit my T-SQL answer of PRINT @@VERSION (must be run on MS SQL Server 2012 SP3-CU7), right?
But surely I can make a challenge like "input two lists of values, match and order the two lists, and output a list with the corresponding matching rows"
and then submit my answer of "SELECT * FROM A JOIN B"
(I don't recall seeing a lot of list or set-based challenges that T-SQL is good at, so I'm thinking about designing some.

Canada Day is around the corner on July 1st. Your task is to output ASCII art of the Canadian flag, as seen below: +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |CANADACANADACANA CANADACANADACANA| |DACANADACANADACA C DACANADACANADACA| |NADACANADACANADA ANA

@NewMainPosts Deleted?
Also dammit I'm also used to being able to see deleted things >.<
At least Sandbox will be easier to use.

Is there a way to tell CPP where to search for #include "files"

short lived post...

@HyperNeutrino Why do you have 52 rep

I was thinking of doing a Canada Day ASCII-art challenge outputting something to do with 150 :P

8:57 PM
@Phoenix gcc file.c -I/dir/subdir/

@Phoenix long story short, age restrictions

@betseg Thanks

this is NeutrinoBot

wat, why is GTX 1080 cheaper than GTX 1070

I can't grep gcc --help for -I because grep interprets -I to be a flag

9:00 PM
@LegionMammal978 Everything that is not documented in the info.txt is not used (yet).

@Adnan Thanks!
@Phoenix grep '-I' <(gcc --help)?
Or gcc --help|grep '-I'
Wait, grep?

yes
I wanted to see the manual entry for -I
@LegionMammal978 That doesn't work because the quotes get processed by bash

gcc --help|grep -- -I should do it
But it's not in gcc --help

oh
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I got it working anyway

@Phoenix freom linux.die.net's manfile for gcc:
> -I dir
Add the directory dir to the list of directories to be searched for header files. Directories named by -I are searched before the standard system include directories. If the directory dir is a standard system include directory, the option is ignored to ensure that the default search order for system directories and the special treatment of system headers are not defeated . If dir begins with "=", then the "=" will be replaced by the sysroot prefix; see --sysroot and -isysroot.

Ok new problem. I told KDE to remember my git password except I typed it in wrong
Pass a valid window to KWallet::Wallet::openWallet().
Pass a valid window to KWallet::Wallet::openWallet().
remote: HTTP Basic: Access denied
fatal: Authentication failed for 'https://gitlab.com/pavelb/Preproc.git/'
And it isn't letting me type it in again.

i have no idea about KDE/Plasma

OK NVM fixed

@Downgoat link?

._. ok I think google is borked

@Downgoat 0/10 use DuckDuckGo

9:10 PM
;_; but duckduckgo has bad search result

prepend your search queries with !g for Greater search accuracy

wat
wow wat

Instead of search test query search !g test query

wat but that just goes to google

exactly

9:13 PM
I'm still being track so no reason to use duck duck go

but it's encrypted

why not call duck duck goat

you should make userscript

wtf is ryzen I thought everyone use intel

@ETHproductions github devil?

oh, the satanic GH MD?

Yeah, that's the one

devil == satan close enough

Quetion: is it better to get i5-7th gen or i7-6th gen

@Downgoat i5 7th

9:19 PM
oh btw do u know what the idfference is between 1080 and 1080Ti (and what founder edition is)
;_; so much terminology

@ETHproductions link?

@Downgoat Building a desktop?

@Downgoat founders edition means it just has the default cooler rather than a custom one

Q: GitHub satanically messing with my README

MD XFMy GitHub repository has nothing but a readme in it. 9:20 PM
@Downgoat 1080TI is a sepearate, significantly more powerful model.

@DJMcMayhem yea

It is unquestionably a better deal than the 1080

@Phoenix so if I get like Asus 1080, instead of NVIDIA 1080, can i still use nvidia driver or do i have to use asus driver
asus don't have mac drivers :(

@Downgoat NVIDIA doesn't manufacture video cards
You have to get it from something like Asus or MSI
They all work with the same nvidia drivers

ok :D

9:22 PM
The only difference between manufacturers is wether or not your GPU comes overclocked and what kinds of fans are on there.

oh, I am getting 16GB of RAM, should I get like 32GB or is that not needed
:O founder edition look super fancy

16gb is sufficient for now, although given how powerful your system currently is going to be 32 gb makes sense for future-proofing.

@Downgoat Exciting! That's a really fun project. :)

@Downgoat The fan is 'blower style', which means it's a bit worse at cooling the GPU itself in exchange for not dumping all of the hear into your computer case.
Blowers exhaust heat out the back outside of the case.

@Phoenix mobo has 4 slots, and I got 2x8GB so I guess I can add 2 more RAM things I guess in the future

9:25 PM
@Downgoat That's a good plan.
@Phoenix In fact, they actually cool the rest of your computer, too.

Question: what does different powersupply mean is it bad idea to get cheapest one
like I mean electricity is electricity
oh wait that's the part that does AC/DC convert

@Downgoat Computer building has gone a long way, however super cheap power supplies can and will explode after a short time.

O_O

DO NOT cheap out on your power supply, make sure it has a few year of warranty.

how much should I spend on one $30? $70?

9:27 PM
Depends on how much you care about efficiency

I have solar
:P

30-40 is a good price if you don't care at all about efficiency standards

what does 'modular' meean?

EVGA have the most reliable ones

@Downgoat just use downloadmoreram.com

9:29 PM
@Downgoat Well, a PSU comes with a crap ton of wires you probably won't actually need in your computer, and modular means you can remove the wires you don't need.
It will make building slightly easier, and if you have a transparent case it will look 10x less ugly with a modular psu

is this good or too expensive
I have a case with transpraent window >_<

You probably don't need 500 watts, but other than that it isn't bad.

Jun 7 at 2:47, by Phoenix
Or get 4tb ssd, and still have saved money over iMac
s/4tb ssd/platinum psu/

Like, I have 2 AMD gpus and a 430 watt psu

@Downgoat It's not just about power usage, it's also about heating. A cheap psu will run your whole system hotter

9:34 PM
@Downgoat What are your requirements? Do you mind that it makes noise?

oh, noise is bad :|

It has a fan, so there will be at least some noise - best to look for reviews mentioning it to see how intrusive it will be

is this any decent: pcpartpicker.com/list/bmqCWX I feel like I'm getting crappy PSU >_<

@Downgoat Then a glass case window is not the best option

:|

9:35 PM
You can get fanless PSUs - just depends on your budget

Some cases have padding to specifically reduce noisee

oh, should I get PSU builtin with the case?

Yes

Outside the case will give even less noise reduction, if you have one with a fan

oh, I was told my wat to get PSU with fan

9:37 PM
I'm not saying you shouldn't, just asking how important noise is to you

noise is pretty important
though it doesn't have to be silent

There are also PSUs with fans that only turn on under load

Compare with the rest of your system - there's no point getting a near silent PSU if your other components already make noise

anyone have case recomendation?

> GeForce GTX 1080 8GB WINDFORCE
> WINDFORCE

9:39 PM
LinusTechTips it a good YouTube source for learning about PC building, at least their old videos like youtu.be/_VJifKTtHME

Very noise

Some graphics card fans only turn on under load too

Most of them, in fact.
Video cards sound like jet engines under full load

chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/240?m=31796003#31796003 <-- do you think i/my pc will die from this

@Phoenix wait wat D:

9:42 PM
There are fanless GPUs now, but obviously not up to the maximum specs

@betseg yes

But CPU and case fans (which you'll want) should always be running afaik, but good ones are very quiet

@Downgoat It's called WINDFORCE and has 3 fans
What were you expecting

:| is that not good
it was just most cheap graphic card

10/10 cooling
0/10 noise

9:43 PM
@betseg could bee coil whine? not a huge issue

Idea: no PSU fan, but get case with fan :O

@Downgoat Remember you also definitely need a CPU fan (or water cooling setup)

wait what really
wat said I didn't

CPU will come with fan

well, certainly a cpu heatsink

9:44 PM
The intel stock cooler isn't a great cooler, you won't be overclocking with it, but it's decent.

my case has a fan though

Your CPU emits far too much heat to be cooled by the case fans alone.
You need a dedicated CPU fan.
And your CPU comes with one, so it's fine.

@HelkaHomba noctua master race

the flat part on the bottom goes right cpu against the top of the cpu with thermal paste in between
@Phoenix Do cpu's come with them? Not for plain cpu buying like amazon.com/Intel-Desktop-Processor-i7-7700K-BX80677I77700K/dp/…

9:48 PM
Is there difference between DDR4-3000 and DDR4-2133

@HelkaHomba That's because you linked an unlocked processor

or should just get cheapest one

Unlocked ones don't

@Downgoat RAM speed almost doesn't matter beyond DDR3 vs DDR4
Go for cheap
Your motherboard likely doesn't even support DDR4-3000, the memory manufacturers keep making stupid fast memory that's not supported by anything.

9:51 PM
I think pcpartpicker.com can check all your parts for compatibility which is a good idea (not all motherboards support all processors/ram/etc.)

It will filter out unsupported parts as you chose them, too.
It says his build is work

I also have to make sure hackintosh compatible

>.>

@Downgoat That statement hurts me, but it's still better than buying an actual mac

Q: How much reputation did you lose today?

HyperNeutrinoAssuming StackExchange doesn't decide to restore my account after deleting it due to age restrictions (even though I'm 14 already and almost 15 ಠ_ಠ), a lot of people on this site just lost reputation from my upvotes being deleted. This happened at around 5:30 PM on June 20th, 2017, UTC. So, your...

9:54 PM
halp why so many gtx 1080

@Downgoat Those are all fan styles

@Phoenix :( why? macOS + windows > windows

Right, but macOS < windows, which is what I thought you meant.

@NewMainPosts I read this as "if you didn't recently lose rep, I never voted for any of your posts"

(not in all cases, but on a GTX 1080 machine, definitely)

9:55 PM
@Phoenix wat no this nonesense except for video game
@Phoenix oh, do you know which one will be most quiet?

Blower/Founders
worst cooling performance though

ಠ_ಠ my account is at 79 rep but I'm able to see vote counts
lol

@HyperNeutrino Maybe you have the userscript that lets you do that?

@HyperNeutrino oh that's featuer of PPCG userscirpt
wtf 1080Ti cost $800 O__O

@Downgoat wait so you have a feature that lets you get around reputation restrictions?
lol

9:57 PM
windforce is loudeset right?

not complaining :D

:( it is also cheapest

@Downgoat Right, forgot GPUs never actually cost their MSRP

I am on amazon

Newegg is better

9:58 PM
do they have free 2 day ship

No, but better deals
@Downgoat Yes, but only at full load. And it will give you better performance because better cooling.

@Downgoat fanless GPU if that helps?

On idle, the fans will likely be off entirely
@trichoplax That's a 1050

@Downgoat Note that you could get a completely fanless computer if you really wanted: youtu.be/9PJOrfpiVwE?t=1m41s

@Phoenix Yes - that's the best you can get without having a fan, as far as I can see

9:59 PM
GPUs emit a lot of heat

Solution: Cool it with water.

@HelkaHomba That assumes a watercooled GPU

wait that's actually a solution?
