12:01 AM
Correction, Nevermind, screw that.

Well I could have done it in Node.JS, but I was going to try it in Java.

12:31 AM
What's the syntax for language declarations for code blocks in markdown?

<!-- language: lang-jelly -->

@Dennis wait does that do anything

It does, but not what you'd expect. All unrecognized language names map to the same thing.

why do people use it again?

Jelly or syntax highlighting?

12:34 AM
the latter
is that all it's used for?

Pretty colors that make your code much less readable in case of bugs.

cool
I haven't really had a need to use it because I mostly use befunge and other esolangs

If you use TIO's automagically generated PPCG answers, it will include the language statement for you.
In case the language has one, that is.

@Dennis What is that?

When you click the permalink icon, you 6 different text areas. The one labeled Codegolf submission is a full-blown PPCG answer.

12:46 AM
nice! Really useful, thanks!
Not a complaint, but I like to use links to documentation instead of the interpreter code for the Befunges. Normally they are in the same place (github, usually) but there are exceptions.

I went with the implementation in most cases since the interpreters are usually incompatible and it's important to know which one TIO is using.

that'd be a cool userscript plugin--more language support

Q: Output all SE sites URLs

programmer5000Your challenge is to output this: https://stackoverflow.com/ https://serverfault.com/ https://superuser.com/ https://meta.stackexchange.com/ https://webapps.stackexchange.com/ https://gaming.stackexchange.com/ https://webmasters.stackexchange.com/ https://cooking.stackexchange.com/ https://gamed...

@ConorO'Brien is there a userscript/plugin that links code blocks to TIO pages?

yeah
it's part of the SE userscript I think
*graduation

1:01 AM
IDK, it says how long the code is, but no link to TIO as far as I can see

For the classic TIO, it has a Run button (Which no-longer works) when a TIO link is supplied.
I might try to make an Automatic TIO Link generator...
If Dennis ever releases proper documentation for his links.

Dennis will, but he's waiting until the format in no longer under development.

The Landsgemeinde (German: [ˈlantsɡəˌmaɪndə]) or "Cantonal assembly" is a public, non-secret ballot voting system operating by majority rule, which constitutes one of the oldest forms of direct democracy. Still at use – in a few places – at the subnational political level in Switzerland, it was formerly practiced in eight Cantons. For practical reasons, the Landsgemeinde has been abolished at the Cantonal level in all but two Cantons where it still holds the highest political authority: Appenzell Inner Rhodes and Glarus. The Landsgemeinde is also being convened in some districts of Appenzell Inner...

Do you guys think it's unfair to, as a language designer, try to crack a cop's solution in your language for a cops and robbers challenge?

I do that all the time.

Alright, just making sure.

I'd give it some time tho--let other people have some fun. Just my opinoin

@NickClifford Barely anyone uses my language, so I really get the chance xP

1:57 AM
@DJMcMayhem Atleast Brain-flak is well known ;-;

2:12 AM
at least brain-flak is interesting
80% of my langs are meh

Stacked being the exception?

@NickClifford I mean, they accepted that when they used your lang
if they didn't want you to, they would at least need to make it non competing

2:42 AM
@DestructibleLemon Yeah, I see now.

@ATaco 80% not 100% :P

I kind of like Stacked.

I have finished (probably) frigid2, unless I get some feedback about how to improve it or something, but it is at a point where it is a full song. I would post it but I have not uploaded yet
it is slow to upload. is it being ddos'd or something?

Full song?

well, it goes for two minutes

2:49 AM
Wait I think I'm out of the loop here
What is it? :P

TIO down?

Yes.

:'(
alright

yeah. anyway, this is going to be version 1.0: this is a finished release, but there might be more added anyway

@LeakyNun Should be back up.

2:53 AM
@Dennis yes it is, thanks

Question: is there any case when java does not perform auto unboxing?

@Downgoat what is auto-unboxing?
Converting e.g. Integer to int?

If you have Integer a; Integer b; I presume a == b will do reference equality, not compare as ints?

@LeakyNun No, thats equals(). == is completely different.

how?
Oh, I see how.

3:27 AM
There's no operator overloading in Java, if that's what's in you rhead.

I think == uses the field values
which are indeed int

You have no idea what you're talking about.

@feersum heh, I suppose so
how is == defined then?

For object types, whether they point to the same address

@feersum oh no D:

3:29 AM
@feersum and under what situations can two instances of Integer point to the same address?

Integer a = 5; a == a;

oh wait, nevemrind. Integer == int will auto unbox

@feersum Integer a = 5; Integer b = 5; a == b what will this give?

Probably true due to small Integers being interned.

right

3:42 AM
@Yodle Random question, who are you?

user165474
I guess Yodle's an example that "last seen" doesn't really mean much; last seen is 1m but last talked is 123 days :P

user165474
We should have a Meta-TNB :D (just kidding, no we shouldn't)

>Your really picky about my grammar, so I'll make sure to stay on you're good side
I corrected my friend on his grammar and he sent this back
Now do we have to eleven this as off-topic?

user165474
If we 11'd everything that was slightly off-topic, this room would be practically empty.

exactly

@ATaco stacked, jolf, reticular, oration are all cool
reng too I think

especially since its apparently subjective. also I'd just like to say that maybe people are getting a bit overly hostile right now. so maybe be a bit less of that

3:52 AM
I think most wouldn't be able to name my languages without checking my Github.

user165474
0/10 I'm not the one being hostile, you are!!11!1 ;P :)

and we all compromised for a clearly irrational opinion from @feersum

Speaking of hostile, That's a little hostile Leaky.

@ATaco (I wasn't just referring to feersum)

3:53 AM
Any single topic, no matter how related to PPCG or TNB, should get its own room if it starts to overshadow other conversations. Many languages created by PPCG users, TIO, discussions about particular questions, etc. all have their own room. Team Spirit is not exception.

@DestructibleLemon (I am aware)

@Dennis the thing is, it didn't
it was like 7 messages
and noone else was talking

user165474

@Dennis I agree, although prior to the complaint, it was not shadowing

@ConorO'Brien We do have a precedence for something like that. In Dyalog APL and APL+PLUS, changing ⎕ML, changes the meaning of a handful symbols (not to anything you want, just swaps between two available meanings), namely monadic ↑ ⊃ ≡ ∊ and dyadic . This already causes chaos, when code just won't work, until – ten minutes later – one discovers that the primitives are indeed broken. ANother half an hour to discover that it was just a localised and set ⎕ML

101 Reputations

I've often had more than that after I woke up.

Usually it's a multiple of 5 though
I have woken up with e.g. +145 in my rep box (a long time ago), but it's very unusual (for me anyway) to have a non-multiple of 5

user165474
+1/-2 question?

@ETHproductions That's good, since non-multiple of 5 means that you've lost reputation, if not for suggested edits.
Which you can't do anymore anyways.

12:29 PM
In this case I got +1 for a downvote I cast on an answer that got deleted

user165474
Hm. Interesting.

I don't know if I've ever gotten two downvotes on the same post

@ETHproductions But you had lost it when you downvoted.

You shouldn't vote based on the current score

Anonymous
12:33 PM
I downvote for loophole abuse, not actually satisfying the requirements, NAA, or blatant copying from elsewhere. I also don't upvote trivial builtin solutions.

@JanDvorak I just don't feel it's necessary to give an answer a negative score if the OP hasn't had a chance to fix it yet
Especially if the user is new to PPCG

Anonymous
I also am generally more lenient with new users making honest mistakes

This answer, for example

When you vote with respect to current score, you don't vote on how well someone answered, but on how well someone voted.

2:10 PM
alright

@JanDvorak I still think it's a little awkward that you can't, according to voting rules, do anything about people voting inappropriately
if someone upvotes a post and shouldn't have done, you're not supposed to downvote to cancel it out, meaning that the post ends up with a higher score than it should have
(however, this is mostly a problem because it injects rep into places it shouldn't be, and downvoting doesn't really help with that anyway)

don't worry about rep

@ais523 nice to see you

I don't want to spend too much time on PPCG, I have so many other things to do
(like write a golfing language…)

heh

2:13 PM
Everyone's writing a golfing language these days

it's just, when I'm writing in Jelly
and have to write $ or µ or ¹ or the like to reshape the parse tree
I feel so helpless
like, why can't we get rid of all the structural characters?

Jelly is already the infix-ish language with the fewest structural characters

btw, the way Brachylog does things is nearly always shorter, or at least no longer, in terms of being able to express the problem tersely, but it tends to require more structural characters and it also has fewer builtins

How are you planning on reducing the number of structural characters even more?
(for your golflang, that is)

Well, if I extend my Jelly fork more, I might add some quicks such as "the three links to the left as a (nil|mon|dy)ad" or "create new codeblock as a dyad".

2:20 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer the latter is exactly what ð does

No, I mean a closeable codeblock, like CJam's {...}.
AFAIK Jelly doesn't have those.

Isn't that just ...ð...ð...?
But with varying monad/nilad/dyad chars

@EriktheOutgolfer you just need to put one on another line
and you can reference it anytime

Although, if I want to reference the 10th line for example, it would be 10<relevant quick>. That's what I want to avoid ;)
Or ⁵<relevant quick> if there are fewer than 3 command-line args.

Why the heck would you ever need 10 links?!?

2:24 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I don't see why Ç doesn't work
if you have 2 extra links, you can also use Ñ

I've been in situations where I've had way more than that, and, what if I'm on the 20 line, there are total 30 lines, and I want to reference the 10th?

why on earth would you have 30 lines

What is the longest Jelly code ever posted?

The most lines I have ever seen in a Jelly submission is maybe 4

long Jelly codes are because people are doing it wrong

2:28 PM
I've seen 5 lines though.
Wait, there are only over a thousand Jelly answers yet? o_O

oh god, user:12012 Jelly is:answer returns 679 results
(12012 is Dennis)

@BusinessCat Aha. That one's a peculiar answer where the submitter is actually doing it right

I don't think the submitter is doing it right though... I'll try to golf.

Wait no, it's not right, why isn't he just doing “_@“Cד+“+1×”?
Or making each link an actual link instead of a string

2:34 PM
I can see an argument for using a jump table in Jelly, but I'm not sure that post itself is it
by far the most common reason to use a line break in Jelly, IMO, is simply because you'd otherwise need two disambiguation characters for the same section of code
$$ and friends are the same number of bytes as Ç plus newline
so why not use the clearer and more maintainable way to do the disambiguation?

2:50 PM
@LeakyNun I've been trying to get this to work in Japt, but it's almost impossible to even take an array and reduce each run of equal items to a single item...
I really need to add partitioning functions

@ETHproductions That's too ungolfy for a tacit language like Jelly IMO.

@ETHproductions how do you do a for loop? I'm not seeing it in the quick-ref of the online interpreter.

3:06 PM
@ETHproductions How about rXY{XgXl -1 ==Y?X:X+""+Y}"?
Not fully golfed, but it's a start

@LeakyNun Oh, I was confused, and it really seemed like you were talking about Jelly.

@EriktheOutgolfer I apologize for that.

@mbomb007 I made it may be TC

@LeakyNun: you can use JavaScript's for loops. for(i=0;i<3;i++ transpiles to valid JS.

3:16 PM
that's... long

However, you will often find that iterating over an array is shorter.
There are a bunch of such functions (m, r, f)
There's implicit input for those commands, so you can just write mX{codehere} to loop over the input. In fact, if } is the last character, you can also leave that out.

@LeakyNun You... don't, really

@Christopher Why is your stdin a list?

You could use X{...}a, which is basically a while loop (while the result of this function is truthy...)

@mbomb007 lack of a real stdin in the language used to program it

Q: Default for Code Golf: Program, Function or Snippet?

Martin EnderOne of the things many (new?) users forget to specify in code-golf challenges is whether the answers should provide a full program or a function (or even just a snippet). For most such things, we have defaults in the tag wiki (like scoring by bytes), but not for this. The conclusion in chat was ...

TL;DR, yes. Functions are allowed by default.

thanks mbomb

@mbomb007 I think they're asking if they can post e.g. System.out.println("Hello, World!"); as a Java entry, instead of public static class A{...}
(correct me if I'm wrong, @CaiusJard)

heh, i was just writing that same example
when mbomb posted to give a good informative answer for me:)

I believe that would be considered a snippet, which would be disallowed by default

essentially, my 94 byte solution to "print the console dimensions" was: using c=System.Console;class P{static void Main(){c.Write(c.WindowWidth+' '+c.WindowHeight);}} and another solution was the function version which saves by dispensing with all the class/main bit: using c=System.Console;f=>c.Write(c.WindowWidth+' '+c.WindowHeight)
i jsut wasnt certain if (given that it couldnt really be compiled and run on its own) whether it's a true answer, and the challenge didnt seem to lay it out

I think the latter would be allowed as a function entry (as long as functions are allowed in that particular challenge)

That looks like a function definition to me = okay

@Christopher Just fyi, passive aggressive jabs about former suspensions don't help at all.

@DJMcMayhem What? I don't understand. I publicly admitted that I deserved it. I actually enjoyed the time of being free.

That's the part I was referring to

@Luke Now I have A=[];rXY{XgJ ==Y?Ap1+Ao)&&X:Ap1 &&XpY}[] which returns the list of items, and stores the list of run-lengths in A

Oh that was humor. I still don't understand how that was a "passive aggressive jab"

(perhaps we should continue our conversation in the Japt chatroom to avoid having two simultaneous conversations in here)

Q: Making assumptions about hardware

ConnorLSWThere doesn't seem to be a standard meta post for assuming architecture or hardware, recently while writing an answer for This Challenge I ran into an issue with the mode windows utility. By default mode will output information on any COM ports on the system as well as the current CLI, in the ab...

Oh, I was going off of "a block of c# that doesn't compile into a program on its own". Sorry for the slight misunderstanding

@trichoplax Try to find a pattern in the downtime!

Ah, TeaScript. It was sort of the original Japt
(well, I wanted to create a JS-based golfing language, and TeaScript inspired me to actually write an interpreter)

I used to golf in TeaScript

Q: Are "thought" languages allowed?

ChristopherI came up with an idea of a "thought" language. It has no real interpreter but does have a Github or something to track changes. The idea is that if you have a language that you like, such as Brain-Flak, but want a way to have output before the program terminates but the vanilla version does not ...
