What did I just read
3

@BusinessCat Trust me, it's not what it looks like. We're talking about math!
Just looking up what "der Satz vom Fussball" is in english. edit: apparently "Euler's rotation theorem", how anticlimactic...

@El'endiaStarman combed hedgehog?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yeah, with a little bald spot due to the theorem.

I now need to see this
@orlp ...... quick question: why would you even want to

user image
2

6:06 PM
@flawr D'awwww...

@flawr Oh man
it's so cute

@quartata: Do any programming languages have a hedgehog as their mascot?

D'oh! Why didn't we think of that!
Let me see...

Hmm. I wonder how hard it would be to make SonicLANG, which uses the various gadgets (like springs and bumpers) in Sonic 1, 2, 3 to move Sonic around...

I don't think there are any

6:09 PM
@El'endiaStarman YES, I want SonicLANG

I don't really see why people consider cute pictures of animals as "not noise"

@Fatalize Well, we were talking about hedgehogs...

SonicLANG + MarioLANG = amazingness

Because it contributes to conversation
It's not just dead weight in chat

By that argument I could also link a picture of Sonic. In both cases I don't really see what it's adding to the conversation

6:13 PM
I find on-topic pictures make the place feel more friendly.

Anonymous
@Fatalize The conversation was about the hairy ball theorem, aka the combing a hedgehog theorem. An image of a hedgehog is relevant. Lots of images of hedgehogs would be noise, but one is fine.

@El'endiaStarman Also SonicLANG should have the ability to do the rolly spinny thingy so that it can destroy the operators that come into its way, unless it encounters a certain op that stops it from rolling
Let's talk about carrots

@KritixiLithos Spin-dash?

That might be what it's called, can't remember

@KritixiLithos wait we have a sonic lang
oh not yet
cool you should make that

6:17 PM
@orlp just finished watching, that was amazing

Nah, I'm developing Carrot atm

@flawr why do you have babby pics of el'endia

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Nah, if that were me, it'd be mostly yellow.

NEWS FLASH: El'endia is Sonic

oh lol
*news
er
is sonic the new flash

6:19 PM
The Flash is way faster.

true, he can time travel speed run

(sorry for mobile link)

he can run so fast he creates a vacuum in a relatively large space

After watching a ted talk proving super speed wrong and stuff, Flash just seems like a fake

Are all the other superheroes real then?

6:22 PM
@DJMcMayhem Great example of how broken things get when writers don't have a good grasp of physics and sciency stuff.

I mean that I lost interest watching Flash

@KritixiLithos that show was so boring. I only saw bits and pieces but I hated it

@KritixiLithos ah, okay

I was never into the whole superhero thing until last year.
My friends finally got me to watch The Avengers
And I realized how wrong I've been my whole life.

@DJMcMayhem ye, it was fine at the start but got boring recently
@KritixiLithos ..... of course it's a fake
it's a tv show
about superheros
what did you expect

6:24 PM
I expected more realistic elements, but .... Marvel > DC

@Pavel The avengers is pretty good, but I think the MCU in general is getting pretty stale. The exceptions being Civil war, GOTG, and Doctor strange

@DJMcMayhem hahahaha
@DJMcMayhem haven't watched doctor strange, should I?

Yes. One of the best MCU movies so far

I haven't even heard of it.

My friends invited me to watch doctor strange with them, but I said no because I wanted to sit at home and spend time on PPCG :/

6:26 PM
Deadpool was good.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ And it has burdlesnoot cumperdink Britishname complicated in it.
@Pavel Deadpool was fantastic, but it isn't technically MCU

I see.

@KritixiLithos #justppcgthings

@DJMcMayhem Even though it's Marvel?

MCU != marvel

6:27 PM
I'm not sure what MCU stands for. I get M is marvel, what is CU

iirc deadpool wasn't the main universe
@Pavel comic universe iirc

@Pavel Marvel Cinematic Universe

Cinematic universe

triple ninja'd

6:27 PM
triple ninja'ed
double triple ninja'ed

Okay, enough ninja's!

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Deadpool was Marvel, but technically Fox

@DJMcMayhem that is the best version of his name I have heard

@Mego Oh, that explains the X-Men appearances.

@El'endiaStarman yeah. For the same reason that the X-Men and iron-man timelines don't overlap

Anonymous
6:28 PM
Fox owns the rights to the X-Men

And Spider-Man for that matter

Anonymous
And considering that Deadpool's stories are very closely related to the X-Men, Fox owns him too

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Sony owned Spider-Man, but now he's back in Marvel's possession

@DJMcMayhem Yes, I already knew that X-Men belongs to Fox, so they don't show up in MCU movies (unless they have a role other than "X-Man"). I didn't know that Deadpool was published by Fox.

Anonymous
Hence his appearance in Civil War and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie

6:30 PM
I'm very excited for that one

Anonymous
It took quite a bit of rules-lawyering for Marvel to be able to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. They couldn't call them mutants, or reference the fact that they're Magneto's children.

that one looks good

I have watched zero Iron Man movies, should I?

My parenthetical remark is why Quicksilver appears in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Also, Wanda the Avenger (Scarlet Witch) is, IIRC, also a mutant.

Anonymous
@Pavel Yes. Even if it's just the first one.

Anonymous
6:30 PM
Iron Man is the best out of the trilogy

Got it.
I didn't like X-men

@Pavel if you like the avengers and want more back story then yes

Any of 'em
Ok

Anonymous
I'm not big on any of the Fox films either (Deadpool excluded)

I've only watched Avengers I and II, Deadpoll, and Antman.

Anonymous
6:31 PM
But Marvel is much better at storytelling than Fox

@Pavel I liked the first couple, but they've sucked since young Xavier
@Mego and way better then DC. The newest DC timeline is horrible

Anonymous
In my opinion, Iron Man (the first MCU movie) is tied with GotG and Doctor Strange for best MCU movie

Deadpoll is the best movie

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem We don't talk about DCCU

6:33 PM
What are you talking about.

Anonymous
Deadpool isn't MCU - we just went over this

why did I get a star

Yeah, yeah.

Anonymous
I'm really excited for Guardians 2

Oh don't get me started

6:34 PM
why did I get more stars

Not sure what you expected there

ok that last one was a test, this chatroom is broken

Anonymous
I wasn't expecting much going into GotG, so it blew me away

Alright, please let that be the last one

such starbait, I've always wanted to know the secret to them

6:34 PM
ask the downvote
ok seriously no more stars or else I lose them all cause mods/ROs

sigh *clears stars*

no pls
my stars
nooooooooooo
28 secs ago, by Eᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏ Iʀᴋ
ok seriously no more stars or else I lose them all cause mods/ROs

Uh, sorry?

@starrer >_<

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman The hero we need, not the hero we deserve

6:35 PM
@Mego I agree 100%. GOTG is probably the best super hero movie I've ever seen
Except that the end was kinda weird

Anonymous
What's weird about it? We are Groot.

@Mego The newest Marvel superhero is... El'endia Starman the Star Clearer!

@El'endiaStarman not mad at you

Anonymous
My love for GotG made me hate watching Suicide Squad even more. Their thought process must've literally been "hey classic rock songs worked for GotG, so let's toss a bunch in for no reason".

Anonymous
Seriously, after Suicide Squad and Batman v. Superman, I'm convinced DC is incapable of making a good movie

6:38 PM
Suicide Squad had way more problems than that though. Chief of all being the over-hyped under-developed joker, and the fact that all but two of the characters were obnoxious AF

which ones weren't?

Anonymous
Will Smith's acting was the only thing that kept that movie (barely) afloat

Deadshot and Diablo

Every other character was really grating

Anonymous
6:39 PM
He was obnoxious, but the few times he was funny made it almost tolerable

Katana was cool, but she didn't make any sense to non-comic book nerds, so it was confusing

Anonymous
My FIL got me and my wife to watch it. I sent him an invoice afterwards.

Hahaha

Anonymous
The DC TV shows aren't any better. Arrow became a shitshow. Supergirl had no chance, because the DC writers don't have enough spine to actually make her the strong female lead she needs to be. The Flash was essentially a series of poorly-written Doctor Who episodes.

6:43 PM
haven't watched arrow, but the other 2 I agree with
the flash had the potential to be good, but then shit happened

Except that it felt like a kids show the entire time

I like kid shows

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Martin EnderFlatten a Stack Cats program code-golfsyntaxbalanced-string Stack Cats it's a stack-based language, with fairly unique semantics. In particular, every operation is reversible, and that means it has somewhat weird loops. This challenge is about the conditional loop (...). I noticed today that on...

For example, Lego Ninjago is a good series, but Netflix isn't updated with the latest seasons (which are a lot)

My little brother likes those, maybe I should watch them...

6:50 PM
I like the plot twist in season 1

@DJMcMayhem It was not that confusing since she was completely useless.

Anonymous
@Fatalize The confusing parts were "why is she in this film?" and "why am I watching this?"

> Speaking of probability and statistics, there is the story of a statistician who told a friend that he never took airplanes: "I have computed the probability that there will be a bomb on the plane," he explained, "and although this probability is low, it is still too high for my comfort."
Two weeks later, the friend met the statistician on a plane. "How come you changed your theory?" he asked. "Oh, I didn't change my theory; it's just that I subsequently computed the probability that there would simultaneously be two bombs on a plane. This probability is low enough for my comfort. So now

From Raymond Smullyan's To Mock a Mockingbird

Nice book, I might consider getting it

7:06 PM
@Sherlock9 Yipes. o_o
Hmm, I wonder how that would fare as a defense in court...

"I only brought the bomb on the plane because I calculated the probability that someone else would bring a bomb on the plane to be very low!"

That's been checked. Turns out it's a misunderstanding of Bayesian statistics. The probability in general of two bombs is low, but the probability of two bombs when there's already one bomb is the same as the probability of having only one bomb
If the bombs are independent events

@El'endiaStarman note to self: Avoid conferences of statisticians at all costs.

Zeynep Gurdal$\lim\limits_{x \to \infty}\frac{\ln(\cos(3x))}{\ln(\cos(2x))}$

just... "help me ı did not do it"

@GabrielBenamy Well, that guy's in trouble. :P

@GabrielBenamy Thıs guy ıs defınıtıvely turkısh

@GabrielBenamy seems appropriate to the conversation about bombs

7:09 PM
@Sherlock9 hahaha, that's amazing. I'll have to check that book out.

I'm taking a statistics class right now

It reminds me of the book I'm currently reading, How not to be wrong by Jordan Ellenburg

@Pavel They why are you on TNB

@TuxCopter why? is the i character turkish?

We literally just had that as an example in class

7:10 PM
@DJMcMayhem Is it any good? It's on my tbr list!

@DJMcMayhem Step 1: Be right

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The dotless i is exclusive to turkish languages IIRC

@DJMcMayhem Check out some of his other books as well. To Mock A Mockingbird isn't just about logic puzzles. It's a book of logic puzzles on combinatory logic
The quote is from a different section on logic puzzles in general

@flawr I like it so far. It's a nice mix of technical/mathy parts and easy to understand/accessible metaphors

7:11 PM
@TuxCopter That's why it looked weird.

@TuxCopter found it
The Turkish alphabet, which is a variant of the Latin alphabet, includes two distinct versions of the letter I, one dotted and the other dotless. The dotless I, I ı, denotes the close back unrounded vowel sound (/ɯ/). Neither the upper nor the lower case version has a dot. The dotted İ, İ i, denotes the close front unrounded vowel sound (/i/). Both the upper and lower case versions have a dot. Examples: İstanbul /isˈtanbuɫ/ (starts with an i sound, not an ı). Diyarbakır /dijaɾˈbakɯɾ/ (the first and last vowels are spelled and pronounced differently) In contrast, the letter j does not have this...
just for anybody wondering about it

It's mostly about picking apart your intuition of statistics in the first few chapters

@DJMcMayhem btw, I'm still stuck at the fight with mettaton ex in undertale
any strategies to help beat her/him?

Are you trying to defeat or diplomance your way past?

7:13 PM
Don't really remember that, sorry.

Random tought: Shouldn't "that's" be italicized as "that's" and not "that's", because "that is" is "that is"

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah, I remember some actions are really effective at raising your ratings and the others are worthless. You've got to spam the glamorous ones

I don't remember which though

I'm wondering: How come whenever TIO gets a new language, I need to clear my cache to see the change, but when I refresh reddit, there are new posts instantly?

Why is TIO cached but not reddit?

because reddit probably has a anti-cache thing

@Dennis can you make it so TIO isn't cached?

cache-control:max-age=0, must-revalidate

@TuxCopter I thought I should blame JS most of the time..?

7:16 PM
@Poke where do I put that

@Pavel No. You should blame JS and caching.

it loads much faster when cached

oops, wrong person

and TIO doesnt' change often enough

7:17 PM
That'd be a response header for a request to reddit
(for people who want context)

Yeah, but I have to clear my phone's entire history when I want to clear the cache.
Maybe make an option or something to not cache it?

or just not use a phone to view TIO?

Dennis himself golfs on his phone a lot

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ That's part of the reason Dennis created TIO

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Boast and pose are your best. I think hurting him also causes ratings to jump a lot, and you can stay pacifist, but it's less effective the more times you use it

7:19 PM
ah, okay
anything for changing weapons/clothes?

Also, equipping armor you haven't worn before is ridiculously effective

ninja'ed
lol though
worn before in the fight?
or at all

Haha. Not sure
Eating food from burgerpants helps a lot too, but not junk food

@DJMcMayhem I'm half hoping the fight ends if I hit over 9000 hotness but not sure
@DJMcMayhem ah, cool
it's a bit too late to backtrack but I have a starfait I think

Do you want me to tell you when the fight ends?

7:20 PM
sure, for pacifist ending tho
haven't tried to kill, that's fairly simple I think (just kill and it's over)

10k + enough hits for him to lose his limbs or 12k

I'd google it but other spoilers

I always have nethackwiki open when I play nethack

So you can harm him a lot and stay pacifist

@DJMcMayhem ahhhh

7:21 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ thanks for googling for me=)

lol welcome
@KritixiLithos different kind of spoilers

Also, if you're able to backtrack, the steak in MTT's face adds a lot of views
700 I think

[Insert something something Bing Master Race here]

What master race ಠ_ಠ

Eww

7:23 PM
My dad works for MS, on Bing.

Bing ಠ_ಠ

@DJMcMayhem ah, okay
iirc starfait I tried and it's like 200-400

Also burgerpants is best character

@Pavel Google is the best I said nothing

7:24 PM
They give out t-shirts ---occasionally--- all the time.
I'm basically a walking bing ad 24/7

@DJMcMayhem does shooting the objects cause limbs to fall off also?

No, I think that's a defense move

I also have socks

@DJMcMayhem I've had his arms fall off though
not legs yet

They have Bing socks?!

7:25 PM
and I haven't ever used the FIGHT option, only action + item + spare

I mean, you can't buy them anywhere
They were handed out at a party when they launched Bing Silicon
Hmm... Would it be an interesting challenge to output the Bing logo, exactly? There's only one color but the construction is more complicated then Google's.

The material-ism in Google's logo is amazing: g-design.storage.googleapis.com/production/v6/assets/article/… (there was even a ppcg challenge for this with 100+ votes)

i'll admit it... i use bing rewards
because who doesn't want 5 bucks for amazon every month or so

It's only available in the U.S.
There's 2 servers for the entire rest of the world.
So Bing is shit outside the states

If you don't mind the endless stream of ads bing is ok

7:36 PM
I've had an adblocker for so long
I don't see ads
Wait, that can't be right
I don't have an adblocker on this computer

idk but bing has ads

There just aren't ads

:s/So //
:s/ is.*/g

Wut

> Bing
Bong

7:37 PM
oops, I meant the second replacement to be :s/ out.*//g

Do you guys think the challenge idea is interesting though? I'd have to carefully measure out the spec, but I think I can do it.

Which challenge?

6 mins ago, by Pavel
Hmm... Would it be an interesting challenge to output the Bing logo, exactly? There's only one color but the construction is more complicated then Google's.
and no, I don't think it's any good

@KritixiLithos golfier dw3wD

it's not that much more complicated then google's

7:39 PM
Yeah, but the challenge for Google's used a simplified logo

No?

no? that G is the current logo
the multicolored G

@Pavel closed as not enough material :P

I don't get it.
I actually don't.
Predictive @NewMainPosts: vote to close

i'm about to fall asleep at my desk at work

Is it ok to ask that the exact color be used, or should I allow a broader range of yellows?

@Pavel given the major point is the construction, I would say being generous

@NewMainPosts I was right.
Now to incredibly carefully measure out ALL THE ANGLES.

that was a lot of flags

7:50 PM
On what?

chat
chat flags get sent to every 10k+ user on the network

Because bing?

if you want

Do you get to see the exact messages the flags are on?

@Pavel how else would you be able to judge if they're valid?

7:52 PM
right...

@Sherlock9 A statistician that doesn't know the concept of conditional probability? Huh :-P

you don't get to see the user who flagged but you do see the room so you can have a closer look if you so wish

Was it bing?

@Pavel no
it was russian SO again for some of them
there were a who load of them about 24 hours ago which almost crashed my browser :(

Oh, you see flags from every chat room on all of SE?

7:54 PM
@Pavel I did say EVERY 10k+ user
so yes

But you don't have 10K on every single site
Just PPCG

@Pavel it's 10k+ total across networks where you have at least 200

Ahh

20
