Hope it goes well for you - it's time to grab some shut-eye for me

Thanks

@MartinEnder done!

much better :)

what are push and pop i don't know and see everywhere plz explain

9:06 AM
Push and pop are stack operations: "put new value on top of stack" and "take top value off and return"

@StevenH. What iz stack i see that everywhere too but I dunno wat iz

Think of a stack of books
Except each book is a data value
(I'm assuming here your confusion is legitimate, but honestly I'm too tired to tell one way or the other)

@StevenH. Like a c array? Or linked list?

Like a linked list except you only look at the first value at any given time
the "top" of the stack is the head of the list

9:10 AM

pop returns the head and sets the head to head.next, push sets the head to a new node with node.next=head

this core war will never end

@StevenH. oooh i get it now

omg it ended

There's also peek which just returns head.value

9:12 AM
the blue smartbot bombed the imp

@TùxCräftîñg yay, you win you!

pop() { return *(sp++); } push(v) { *--sp = v; }
where sp is a pointer to the top of the stack

tux how to play core war please I can't make pmars work

on what os are you?
harald.ist.org/ares i use this but i am on windows

9:17 AM
Although it's a matter of personal preference as to whether you use ++ or -- for pop (always the opposite for push), personally I like pop(){ return *(sp--);}

but it should work with wine

@DestructibleWatermelon Download the DOS 386+ version and DOSBox.

thanks d00d
already have dosbox too

@StevenH. -- for push and ++ for pop is a 'standard'
every CPU architecture use this for stack management

There's some microcontrollers that stack manage in the reversed manner

9:19 AM
@DestructibleWatermelon Run the DOS 386+ version with DOSBox.

int a; int *i=&a; for(;;)*--i=0; will this code bork my system

@betseg segfault

@zyabin101 don't repeat yourself

i think this will segfault
brb booting my nux machine

@zyabin101 Don't repeat yourself

9:22 AM
In software engineering, don't repeat yourself (DRY) is a principle of software development, aimed at reducing repetition of information of all kinds, especially useful in multi-tier architectures. The DRY principle is stated as "Every piece of knowledge must have a single, unambiguous, authoritative representation within a system". The principle has been formulated by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas in their book The Pragmatic Programmer. They apply it quite broadly to include "database schemas, test plans, the build system, even documentation." When the DRY principle is applied successfully, a ...

@DestructibleWatermelon It's a warrior.

9:31 AM
the code of smartbot if you want to test against your bot

I'm confused, what am I looking at at visuals?
what are the visuals representing?
dammit where is my warrior?

@TùxCräftîñg Running it against the Imp for 31 round gives a score of 31.

9:40 AM
here is how my program dies hopelessly...

._.

my bot sucks lol

test it against smartbot

9:41 AM
@TùxCräftîñg Imp is the most basic warrior.

MY PROGRAM DIDN'T ENTIRELY LOSE

@zyabin101 ik
but what this score mean?

my program just runs an imp in the hope that the enemy is turned into an imp and kills it when it comes around

imp is a sort of stupid replicator

@TùxCräftîñg I ran pMARS with the Imp and Smartbot, and got an output:

9:42 AM
spl 2
spl 4
mov 2,-3
jmp -1
dat #0,#0
mov 0,1
it's crap
I think I might turn this into a scanner or something

one of the lines was:

ooooooh, I have an idea >:)

smartbot by tuxcrafting scores 31.

wait how to make scanner
that isn't hard lol tux
imp can't win unless you suicide

9:44 AM
check the scanner label in smartbot

However, Smartbot against Mice didn't end up well for the new one: Mice scores 79, while smartbot scores 7.

it's a stupid scanner
ouch

wait how did imp win...
oh wait, was draw
._.

^^
However, Smartbot seems to win Midget: Midget scores 36, while smartbot scores 54.

this frankly just embarrasing

9:46 AM
However, Smartbot seems to lose Piper: Piper scores 69, while smartbot scores 24.

I'm creating a golfing lang written in Racket.

Ooh that sounds interesting and (as the starboard has made clear) quite painful :D

I'm gonna do a Koth with my collection.

There's a version written in Python but it's horrible at recursion and doesn't have the majority of things implemented, so I figure before I continue breaking the recursion limit forevermore I should move to the proper language to write a functional golfing language in.
But yeah, painful. :P

Weeing If FirstWrite a function or program that awards you SE badges. If an input "Q" is given it means you have asked a question. @TùxCräftîñg I'll add it soon.
But for now, I might clash the hill against smartbot.

@StevenH. You could rewrite in basic Lisp or something

^^ here

Or in Lisp written in C, so that you can build your basic features from the ground up
Sorry for messing with your carets, zyabin

10:14 AM
smartbot is second :O

I'm more familiar with Racket, and don't want to learn all of the ins and outs of basic Lisp to use it as effectively as I do Racket. I'm planning to format, transpile, and then eval; that should be a little bit simpler than building from ground up

Hill after warrior #3: Piper

I'd need to create all the language builtins either way, so this is fine.

For example, 10 is happified 31 since 3² + 1² = 10, and if you happify 10, you get 1² + 0² = 1. Note that 13 happificat...

@TùxCräftîñg Uhm, # is the pound symbol.

10:21 AM
no, i mean £
the english pound

@TùxCräftîñg That's the Pound sterling symbol :P

uncode call it POUND SIGN

# is also a pound sign

it's the number sign

> The # symbol is commonly called the pound sign, number sign and more recently the hashtag. It is called the pound sign because the symbol comes from the abbreviation for weight, lb, or “libra pondo” literally “pound by weight” in Latin. When writing lb, it was not uncommon for scribes to cross the letters across the top with a line across the top, like a t. See the example below.

Q: Does codegolf involve only code size?

AggggI'd like to know if codegolf does allow other kinds of challenges, like memory-size related ones (Given a structure, try to use the least amount of bits to store the same information) and so on. I don't know if this kind of challenge fits codegolfing or not.

@quartata your best option iirc is to use a single string with each "array string" being joined by a character not in the input. Then use sub and inString in a while/repeat loop. What are you trying to do?

Is anyone considering answering this? I'll delete it if not... The reception was not exactly great.
I won't delete it if someone is actually working on it, or planning on working on it.

I think it's an okay challenge personally, but just not one I'd personally do any time soon (I do wonder what the downvote was for though)

11:17 AM
@Sp3000 The downvoter exaplained the vote, so it's fair enough. It was downvoted because the voter thought it was boring.

Oh, I didn't realise that correlated

I thought it would be fun to try myself, so I hoped others would too. Thanks for commenting @Sp3000. I'll leave it there a few hours, to see if someone wants to give it a go...

Even if they happen at similar times it's not definite that it was the same person. I often comment on downvoted posts shortly after the downvote.

@trichoplax True, and so do I. "I guess the downvote was because xxx". In this case I'm fairly sure it's the same user though... Not that it matters...

Fair enough.

11:21 AM
Even if it was someone else, I guess the explanation is the same. :)

It's also only one user, so I'd read more into the lack of upvotes than the solitary downvote

Therefore, "I'll leave it there a few hours, to see if someone wants to give it a go". :)

Sounds like a good idea. The voting in the first hour can be mainly noise :)
