Nice
what's gonna end up inside it?

Not mine; nabbed from the internet

@LuisMendo Done.

@mınxomaτ It's hilarious how the way they describe you makes you sound like some notorious criminal hacker
> The perpetrator of this scan is a security researcher that goes by the name of Minxomat,
7

12:07 AM
"perpetrator" especially.
Also, someone actually had to type "Minxomat" with a straight face in a news article. That just makes me smile.

> Nevertheless, server owners should take no risks and use Minxomat research as an opportunity to secure their servers
Damn clipboard hijackers

@ConorO'Brien I hate those too.

@mınxomaτ congrats on having a type of research named after you :D

A type of research? Wut?

> Minxomat research
:P

12:11 AM
The author conveniently misplaced an apostrophe

Oh.
brb setting up college classes for "Minxomat research".

Great, somebody is DDoS-ing the new TIO server and now I can't work on v2...

@Dennis who?

(not me)

Minxomat?
:P

12:13 AM
@ConorO'Brien How would I know that?

@Dennis idk :P

I don't have my ski-mask on, so I can't be DDoSing.

it's that perpetrator minxomat probably

@DJMcMayhem Probably not, since I didn't make the new domain name public yet.

wait so if its not public how is it getting DDoS'd?

@ConorO'Brien How would I know that?

@mınxomaτ Change your name to "Mınxomaτ The Perpetrator"

Nope.

will you do it if you get more articles written about you and your perpetrator-ness

I am wondering though. Until now, I assumed DDoS attacks usually had a purpose (bring this service down, extort money from that guy, etc.). None really applies here...

@Dennis Are you hosting on a VPS?

12:16 AM
@DJMcMayhem That sounds like the easiest way to get an out-of-context article written about you

DO, OVH etc?

DO, yeah.

@Dennis DDoS is to be expected. The IPv4 ranges from DO are well known and get attacked at random.

.-.
remind me never to tick you off

@Dennis Shits & Giggles not an option?

12:17 AM
Is it a web-based attack?

@mınxomaτ I have three DO servers (one personal, TIO, TIO v2), and this is the first time...
@mınxomaτ No clue. They gave me no details and cut all traffic.

Rofl.

I've had DO servers running for nearly 6 months and I've never had DDoS attacks either

Well, most of the attacks don't actually reach your server. That doesn't mean there are no attacks.

@mınxomaτ That's nothing. I had a VPS once (different company) and somebody tried to brute-force my email account's password. They suspended my service because I was sending spam. After convincing them that it's kinda hard to send spam via incoming SMTP connections, they re-enabled it but cautioned me to prevent it from happening again...

12:22 AM
OVH handles this a bit better. They enable you to drop some ports but never cut off access to the server.
@Dennis Yeah. I many of these complaints. Anything from threats to "I'm calling the Internet Police"...

VPS Ace wasn't much better. Someone breached my control panel account (hosted by them, no clue how), and they tried to convince me that I could have prevented this by installing an antivirus on my server.

Jesus. I'm glad I installed caching on my blog a few weeks ago.

Anyone here play LoL?

A little bit

do you like it?

TBH not really
I enjoy playing it with some irl friends of mine, but overall it's pretty frustrating
Probably cause I don't understand it well enough to appreciate the meta

12:41 AM
hm, okay

Why do you ask?

a friend of mine plays, and wants me to play

@mınxomaτ As far as I can tell from the logs I do have access to, there were roughly 1.4 Gbps of inbound traffic which caused a CPU load of 50%, so it did each the server.

1.4 Gbps? That's a bit low for DDoS. DO should have mitigated that w/o any problems

Well, that's the part that reached my server anyway.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Well, it's worth at least trying. I've never really cared for MOBAs, but I can understand why they're popular. The strategies go crazy deep

Ever wondered how many open FTP servers there are? https://github.com/massivedynamic/openftp4

makes sense seeing how there is a giant pro scene

@Quill This one time reddit > HN ;-)

12:50 AM
@Quill wat how was this even generated

The tweet? Twitter I suppose.

@mınxomaτ your ISP did not get mad?

Two Hacker News headlines in one week
not bad

@Downgoat it's my job.
The most interesting thing though are the email conversations with other researchers today. Very educational.

@mınxomaτ Damn son well played

12:56 AM
bwahaha

I was actually curious about open ssh servers online. It seems that people constantly scan for them.

VNC is way more interesting. See above unsecured VNC session.

Uh

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ i only play a little, but its kinda fun, you don't need to know the meta for low levels

The server is back up. Whatever has happened, I don't think it made it into the logs. No connections to the HTTP server, not more than the usual amount of failed SSH connections.

1:00 AM
Out of curiosity, which port/how were they attacking?
(Or can you not tell cos no logs)

@Dennis its probably someone who got inspired by minxomat :P

@Sp3000 That. I only have an email from DO notifying me about the temporary disconnection of my server and the logs in the control panel indicating the traffic.

@Dennis did you get a chance to see my ping?

TIL Twitter lets you search for URLs even if they are shortened (by any URL shortener).

1:14 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala Ah, yes. I couldn't act on it when I saw it, then forgot. Sorry.
How should it pass the string to the interpreter?

@Doorknob I was thinking of redesigning (or replacing) Vlad in qnh but I worry that people will be upset since Vladbanes are such an iconic meme
Not sure what to do
I'm actually kind of surprised no other forks have done that

10/10 google

1:38 AM
@Dennis you don't need to make any changes, I was just asking what sort of file name gets passed to the interpreter, is there a non-zero chance that it would be a certain absurd string which bugs it?

@RohanJhunjhunwala The filename of the source code is always code.

@Dennis ok, thanks
@Dennis wait a second how does that work if two people run the tio at once

Different directories.

@Dennis oh ok
so, you create multiple "ghost directories" for each person when they run it, and delete the directory later?

Pretty much.

1:45 AM
cool

1:58 AM
I finally got around to making a line graph of the number of messages per day in TNB (updated). Uncheck the SQL checkbox and check the JS checkbox, then click "Run" again. (Ctrl+F5 if this doesn't work.)

whoa
it worked once, but now I get
          TypeError: queryOutput is undefined
TNBDE.js%20line%2058%20%3E%20Function:2:5
TypeError: queryOutput is undefined
TNBDE.js%20line%2058%20%3E%20Function:2:5

My graph ends in 2014 :(

mine too

Ctrl+F5, guys...
Seriously, I typically don't link anything in here that doesn't work for me, using the public server. :P
The days where I used to (accidentally!) post links to localhost are long past.

@El'endiaStarman I did, but then it didn't work after that
do I have to Ctrl+F5 each time I want to refresh?

2:08 AM
@El'endiaStarman didn't help
i crtl-f5 then do the running thing again, right?

@Maltysen Yeah, try that.

still only up to july 2014

@ConorO'Brien Humph. That's weird.

can u post screenshot?

@Maltysen Oh hey, it does end there for me too. I didn't notice it before... >_<

Ah-ha, fixed it.

Nah, you'll have to click on this link: ppcg.starmaninnovations.com/tnbde/#DwDiyHBpwq

This just happened to me:

2:15 AM
Not the first time, surely ;)

I'm doing base conversion and thought "hey I could make some J code for this, it shouldn't be too hard"
three hours later, I have this:
@Geobits nah, but first time this school year.
   2 final 13
 --
2|1
 --
2|3

2|13
and it only looks decent

google does base conversion pretty well without all the J :P
Along with any (decent) calculator, but that's just old-school

I meant do some ascii art :P
@El'endiaStarman feature-request: make the checkboxes autocheck :p

@ConorO'Brien You'd still have to click the "Run" button again because I will not auto-run JavaScript.

what's the worst that could happen? :P
it's not like anyone would abuse it for rickrolls or anything
well, I best be off on trying to do that task I no longer have time for :P

2:22 AM
It's interesting how there was a little flurry of activity in chat at the beginning of 2011 and then chat basically just died for most of three years before activity really picked up again.

Code trolling
Along with a few other highly popular art-cons at the time, it really brought in a bunch of new users.

There's also a significant increase around Oct 2015 that wasn't just a spike.

Hmm, browsing meta for that time frame doesn't ring any bells as to why. Probably a few fun thing hit HNQ around then to bring in another new crop if I had to guess.

2:41 AM
@Geobits like me. i didn't make an account until later, but i lurked for a long time and was introduced by code-trolling

@El'endiaStarman I don't see a graph

@PhiNotPi Ctrl+F5, then toggle the checkboxes and hit "Run".

@Maltysen I came in around code trolling time, too. It was a popcon that I went for first, though.

@El'endiaStarman why? you don't have to worry about xss cuz there aren't any credentials

2:42 AM
@Maltysen I'm not worried about attacks on me, specifically my server.

@El'endiaStarman but you are worried about attacks on the users right?

Bah, who cares about the users? :P
5

no, but seriously, what could auto running js do to the users except redirects
there are no credentials to be worried about

They could be redirects to harmful sites.

@El'endiaStarman or just make when js tick is checked, it doesn't autorun

2:45 AM
@Maltysen I was thinking about doing that. I could also uncheck the SQL box at the same time so you can just click "Run" without having to do anything.

@El'endiaStarman I wonder what happened in Q2 2015...
In Q2 2015, we were still in beta :p

Except for a missing label, we pretty much still are >_>

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ maybe?
no, that was 2014

@Geobits like wth, i kinda not really can understand that we're a different site than the others and so it took longer to graduate us, but why is it taking longer to give us a design?

@El'endiaStarman suggestion: use chartist as lib for visualizing output

2:59 AM
@Downgoat Looks pretty cool, but probably overkill for what I need. Besides, can't you include other JS files from JavaScript? If so, you could do that and then do the charting yourself.

What on earth happened in Aug '14 again...

Oooh hey, this one's a good one: average number of New Main Post posts per day on a weekly basis. We graduated near the end of February 2016.

o_O nice, uh, biweekly-ish thing we've got going there.

@Sp3000 yeah, but that doesn't really apply to the autorun thing.

3:14 AM
@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ StackEgg happened. I just went and checked the transcript.

The thing-that-must-not-be-named?

@Geobits I personally just find it amusing that we hit 9 questions per day (on average) and then crashed to 1 question per day a month later.

I SAID STACKEGG

@PhiNotPi Ohhhh that makes sense. Wow, who would've thought that such a controversial thing would've ended in a net, permanent benefit for us...

You know what they say: Any press is good press.

3:16 AM
>_>

Stack Egg... what was that again?

The thing I/we got a bit of hate on meta for :D

link?

@Syxer April Fool's thing that PPCG and CR took a little too seriously (or not seriously enough, depending on who you ask).

Breaking news: Studies show that StackEgg and Code Trolling have a crucial positive effect on site health.

3:18 AM
@El'endiaStarman And Arqade, and Anime/Manga, and a few others. We were just the ones that got called out on it and scapegoated.

@Geobits the others started doing it after they called us out on it and ended up winning :/

@PhiNotPi Time to bring them back? ducks

@PhiNotPi everyone should have raided each other and it would have actually been really fun that way
like balancing defense (working on your own egg and fending off raiders) and offense(raiding)

Yeah :/
As I said in chat, this game would've been so much more fun if the initial reaction was "PPCG is attacking our egg. Rally the troops!" instead of "PPCG is a bunch of nasty cheaters". — Geobits Mar 31 '15 at 22:23

3:23 AM
I was really disappointed when people came in here and started chat-banning people.

Oooh, this one's curious: ratio of image oneboxes to messages per day (updated).

i dont see anything?

@Maltysen Click the new link and then Ctrl+F5, then click "Run".

the hell happened at the end of 2013?

@Maltysen gifs

3:33 AM
and what's up with the random spikes?
this is strange

i can prolly figure out some js stuff
@El'endiaStarman make query output width not 100%. the scrollbar goes all the way to the right, and it becomes the target for all my touchpad scrolls

@Maltysen Maybe I'm missing something, but why wouldn't it apply?

3:51 AM
@Sp3000 cuz it doesn't instantly cause any damage. the guy has a chance to evaluate whats going on, which if he can't then not autorunning doesn't matter

@Maltysen That actually only happens when there's more than 960 time units. width = (data.length > 960 ? data.length : 960) - margin.left - margin.right,
I chose to do it that way so the data is graphed somewhat more faithfully, but maybe I can add an option somehow to toggle that particular feature...

@El'endiaStarman no, i mean the table not the graph
the graph being full length is fine

@Maltysen ...oh, well, that's relatively rare, so...
Wait, how is it a problem if it's 100%?
Also, depending on the contents, there may be a minimum width to the table.

Ohhhhh I see what you mean, yeah, that's annoying to me too.

@Maltysen Fortunately, that's a super easy fix.
Just had to slap a display:inline-block on there.
@Maltysen What if the script hijacked the clipboard and then redirected elsewhere? Or read from your clipboard and sent the results to the attacker?

Hi
@HelkaHomba u like IPA? /ʌɾdʌ ynˈly/

4:14 AM
@Maltysen In the browser console, you can do JSON.stringify(queryOutput) and you'll get a big text string, which you can then copy-paste elsewhere, and parse with a JSON library in your chosen language.
