So I didn't really miss anything there.

2042 rep

Oh, and the room gained five new owners.

Oh yeah, the room owner drama, haha

Yeah, I saw the announcement because it was still pinned when I re-joined

@DJMcMayhem I actually have something like a dozen more dreams that I wrote down and posted on Facebook from a few years ago, when I was trying to achieve lucid dreaming.

3:01 PM
And lots of new challenges :D

Yes, that's the best part :)

And I made a new nested programs challenge.

Cool, can I see it?

and i made a chatbot

I saw that, I think (is it Zalgo?)

@ETHproductions yep

^^^ yes.
ninja'd

@El'endiaStarman huh. Interesting. How do you try to lucid dream?

Ugh there's an argument going on in the comments of Decode the chmod

Q: Decode the chmod

Beta DecayChallenge Given a three digit octal permissions number, output the permissions that it grants. chmod On UNIX OSes file permissions are changed using the chmod command. There are few different ways of using chmod, but the one we will focus on today is using octal permissions. The three digits ...

@DJMcMayhem One method, which worked for my brother, is to write down everything you can remember about your dreams.
He stopped doing it after a couple weeks since he felt it was probably a bad idea to hijack the brain's intended purpose for dreams.

3:05 PM
@TùxCräftîñg Does Zalgo only know "Hello", "wat", and whatever anyone says to him?

@BetaDecay Yeah, I flagged the first comment in the chain and said "purge all the rest".

He learned from other SE chat rooms.

3:05 PM
Oh, wow

BAI

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, I flagged too, saying take it to chat

@BetaDecay It doesn't seem like any of the mods are active right now, otherwise I'd ping them in chat and point them straight to it.

Do they not know that the number of the beast is 616?

3:06 PM
@El'endiaStarman interesting. Maybe I should try it. I remember having one semi-lucid dream in my life, but it wasn't that interesting

@Downgoat your company on your GitHub profile is CHS. What exactly is CHS?

And it was a long time ago

@El'endiaStarman I would too
@Neil I don't have any phobia like this. [Pssst... maybe a mod should move this to chat???]Erik the Golfer 4 mins ago
Gah, that comment infuriates me

So I normally don't hit the rep cap, but today, I know I've already lost thirty potential points, and the day has barely even started. O_O

trolls will troll

3:08 PM
@DJMcMayhem It has been 15 hours already since UTC midnight

@BetaDecay Yeah, me too. Especially since he has the ability to delete those comments and make a chat room

@DJMcMayhem I don't remember if any of my three lucid experiences were connected to recording my dreams, but I have had one semi-lucid moment and two partially-lucid dreams. The semi-lucid moment was especially amusing/aggravating because what happened was that a sweater I was holding magically changed into a t-shirt, and I was like "Well, that's what happens when you're dreaming.", and then I did nothing with this information.

@DJMcMayhem Exactly. Or just don't start an argument on someone else's question :P

@ETHproductions every time I've ever hit the rep-cap was at like 23:30. It's weird to me to hit it well before even waking up
@El'endiaStarman Haha

3:10 PM
@DJMcMayhem True

You got to be able to ask yourself, "Hey man, is this a dream?"

Where'd you get most of this rep from?

I was apparently not awake this morning leaving the house, as I was freaking out that I was missing my watch and couldn't find it ... I haven't worn a watch in over a dozen years.

Just now, I had to restart the Windows Explorer because it borked.

"Seems like everyone’s sleepwalking through their waking state or wake walking through their dreams. Either way they’re not gonna get much out of it."

3:12 PM
@ETHproductions Well, I posted a challenge (it's at 21 rn), and posted an answer that linked to a previous old answer of mine. The old answer got 5 new votes.

@JonathanAllan That didn't happen for either of the lucid dreams I had. I just knew that I was dreaming and was able to take control of it. In one of them, I might have even said "Hey, I'm dreaming!", and then proceeded to do stuff.

It got me the necromancer badge. :D
Also, I just broke 13K! \o/
3

Yayy

Incidentally, I've also had a couple Inception-esque dreams. For instance, I remember I had one dream where I dreamed about waking up from another dream.

It's kinda silly to celebrate every single 1k milestone, but it gets stars every time so why not? Haha

3:14 PM
That's weird... I don't remember making the universe tag...

There needs to be a sorta option, cause I had one once but it didn't feel that different

Hang on, googling "lucid dream"

@ETHproductions It's where you're fully aware that you're dreaming. Typically, this also means that you can control it.

I've done that once, or maybe a couple of times

3:19 PM
well , in sleep , i suddenly feel sth that i can't see in my dream (falling off bed , lights turned on etc) but exactly before finding out that i'm dreaming , i get awaked

Wait, I get notifications about chat flags from every chat room?

Yeah!

Just got one from Russian SO

@BetaDecay нет

One time I had a dream where one of my adult friends walked over to me and started shaking me and saying "Wake up."

3:24 PM
Flags on messages in different languages is basically why mods have the translate superpower in chat.

@ETHproductions Whoa.

@BetaDecay Русский язык - мой родной язык.

Turned out it was actually my sister trying to wake me up, but in my dream it sounded exactly like the adult.

@flawr Are you sure you don't? ;)

3:25 PM
From the Stack Overflow in Russian chat, it seems like the message was flagged about ducks.
2

@BetaDecay да

@zyabin101 Ducks? XD

Not sure what the flagged message was though.

@BetaDecay But these are about the only words I know. I also know just a few of the kyrillic letters, but just because I'm interested in russian spaceflight=)

@El'endiaStarman Tuples can be dictionary keys right?

3:28 PM
@quartata Yes, because they're immutable.

When I was 7 or so, I had a dream where my mom dropped a heavy object (don't remember what it was), but when it hit the floor there was a loud bang IRL and I woke up.

Not sure about a tuple where one of the elements is a list, though.

They're tuples of strings so it should be fine

@flawr Haha cool

Anyone know of an online Python IDE that supports turtle, besides Tinker.io? Tinker.io doesn't have every piece, and requires a paying membership to access all builtins.

3:29 PM
TIO will have graphical output soon apparently

@ETHproductions I remember I've had several dreams where the vibration from my alarm was worked into it somehow.

@mbomb007 Did you try the usual suspects from the Meta post?

@ETHproductions I have had similar things, but I suspect that in some cases the brain fabricates the story around a stimulus, like a bang, after the stimulus was perceived.

@flawr Well, we do live in the past.

@TimmyD Hello, I'm from the future.

3:31 PM
@flawr That sounds really odd at first, but I guess it makes sense.

That's one of the suggestions for why we experience deja vu.

@ETHproductions For me, it's like this

@TimmyD I assume you're referencing this post?
I already know that Ideone and repl.it don't support turtle

@TimmyD I heard that too, but everytime I am so damn convinced that I experienced that before.

My new startup's slogan: DejaVu Technologies - bringing you the future since 2021

3:32 PM
back

Speaking of deja vu, I've noticed that I seem to be experiencing it somewhat more often recently than in the past. It's definitely weird.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Roses are red
Déjà vu

And when I experience deja vu, I typically wonder if I've dreamed it before. :P

@El'endiaStarman There is more stuff your brain can relate to than in the past.

@mınxomaτ That happens to me a lot as well, especially when I'm drifting off but haven't fallen asleep yet.

3:34 PM
@flawr Our internal message bus received information out of order, and so it buffered the input, resulting in us "experiencing" the stimulus twice.

@flawr Plausible, but hard to verify. :P

@mbomb007 Yeah, that's the thread.

@El'endiaStarman Did you ever have a dejaEntendu? :D

@flawr *googles*...hmm, no, I don't think so.

@TimmyD I wish…

3:36 PM
@El'endiaStarman googles too just to see what there is on google

They sound fun

@mbomb007 Did you try Coding Ground? I'm not sure if it does or not, just offering another online environment.

@mınxomaτ For example, recently I was standing on a chair, and it started to fall forward. Just before I hit the ground, I woke up very dizzy. I suppose that was as result of my brain trying to keep its balance in the dream.

@flawr I'm sure blind people have

@ETHproductions That's actually a reflex (brain not really involved) when your neck bends at a certain angle.

3:37 PM
@flawr Or a déjà senti

I don't think I've ever had a wake-up-before-I-hit-the-ground dream. I usually hit the ground, but I don't get hurt. :P

@El'endiaStarman You hit the ground? That'd be horrific

@TimmyD Doesn't have the module

In other news my ceiling fan is blowing around a piece of tinfoil on my table and the sound it's making sounds exactly like someone typing

@mınxomaτ Huh... so my neck was bent somehow?

3:38 PM
@BetaDecay Most of the time, I rolled. :P

So every 5 minutes I forget and think someone has broken in to use the WiFi

@quartata Are you at work or at home?

Home

@El'endiaStarman :)

Maybe a mod should delete this entire nonsensical comment chain.

@Lynn what??

@Lynn El'endia and I have already flagged it

@Lynn I don't think he's doing it deliberately. I think he actually thinks he's contributing like this

Shrug
He was really rude towards Dennis in the Jelly room a couple of days ago

I saw.

3:41 PM
@Lynn Wow, he has some gall to insult a moderator

Sorta wish he’d buzz off. Oh well

@quartata Ohhh, deja senti is actually what I experience most often. It's usually a sensation of "I've been here before."

I was thinking of it more in the context of "already smelled" :P
That's the problem with sentir....

@TùxCräftîñg Looks cool :)

@quartata Well, I definitely can't experience that, since I've never had a sense of smell. :P

How would you tile an image as the background in html?

I'm actually somewhat curious as to how I would react to being sprayed by a skunk...

3:49 PM
Nm, I'll just google it

@El'endiaStarman I actually don't wanna know.

@El'endiaStarman ??? How many senses are you missing?

@DJMcMayhem Two, sorta. I can't smell at all, I'm deaf, but I can and do hear with cochlear implants, and my sense of taste is affected by my lack of smell.

So 2.5?

Uh, ish? :P I counted it as 1 + 0.5 + 0.5.

3:57 PM
Aww yeah.
I got 1 gold, 5 silver and 25 bronze badges.

I have 1 gold, 41 silver and 140 bronze. :P

@zyabin101 Congrats on the geometric progression!

Thanks :3

@El'endiaStarman You can't smell at all? :(

And thanks Santa for helping me gain it.

3:59 PM
@quartata Nope. I have congenital anosmia.
Anosmia (/ænˈɒzmiə/) is the inability to perceive odor or a lack of functioning olfaction—the loss of the sense of smell. Anosmia may be temporary, but some anosmia (including traumatic anosmia) can be permanent. Anosmia is due to a number of factors, including an inflammation of the nasal mucosa, blockage of nasal passages or a destruction of one temporal lobe. Inflammation is due to chronic mucosa changes in the paranasal sinus lining and the middle and superior turbinates. When anosmia is caused by inflammatory changes in the nasal passageways, it is treated simply by reducing inflammation....

Well look on the bright side: you will never have to know what sewage, rotting flesh and skunks smell like

@BetaDecay Exactly!
On the other hand, it's not so fun when you have to be the one to go out and put a deer leg that your dog brought back from the woods into a garbage bag. Trust me, it felt as disgusting as it probably smelled.
Or when you accidentally drink spoiled milk.

@El'endiaStarman Your dog brought home a deer leg?! And I thought my cat's shrews were bad

> Often people who have congenital anosmia report that they pretended to be able to smell as children because they thought that smelling was something that older/mature people could do, or did not understand the concept of smelling but did not want to appear different from others. When children get older, they often realize and report to their parents that they do not actually possess a sense of smell, often to the surprise of their parents.
Yep, I had no idea that I couldn't actually smell until later in my childhood.
I don't remember if my parents were surprised, though.

@El'endiaStarman Hopefully you never have a gas leak.

4:06 PM
@mbomb007 Yeah, indeed. My fiancée has an okay sense of smell though, which helps.

Oh Christ

@BetaDecay ...I thought you were Satanist.

I flick between the two ;)

@El'endiaStarman you confused me. I was convinced the correct spelling was spoilt, but then once more I had to learn that there is british spelling and wrong spelling

@flawr s/british/American/

4:07 PM
> british spelling and wrong spelling
This is why I like Europeans
2
They understand

@flawr s/and/is/

@flawr ;_;
Not by population...

@BetaDecay You too might like the sandman comic series

And once more I had to learn that what I was taught isn't always correct everywhere

@BetaDecay Ah-ha, so you're a Christian Satanist!

4:10 PM
Hot dang. Golfed 21 bytes off my chmod answer, and now I'm within striking distance of JavaScript.

@El'endiaStarman satanic christian?

@El'endiaStarman is that a real thing?

@DJMcMayhem no

@DJMcMayhem Not that I know of, but Christian Atheism is, so...

@El'endiaStarman I prefer to be called a Purgatory Inhabitor

4:13 PM
Christian atheism is a theological position in which the belief in the transcendent or interventionist God is rejected or absent in favor of finding God totally in the world (Thomas J. J. Altizer) or following Jesus in a godless world (William Hamilton). Hamilton's Christian atheism is similar to Jesuism. == Beliefs == Thomas Ogletree, Frederick Marquand Professor of Ethics and Religious Studies at Yale Divinity School, lists these four common beliefs: The assertion of the unreality of God for our age, including the understandings of God which have been a part of traditional Christian theology...

@BetaDecay inhabitor or inhibitor?

Inhabitor

I.e. someone who lives in (inhabits) purgatory.

I'm sure all hell would break loose if I inhibited purgatory
3

@BetaDecay You sure it wouldn't freeze over, instead?

4:15 PM
@BetaDecay literally

@El'endiaStarman I have heard of that before (because of browsing C.se)

@BetaDecay That reminds me of the saying, "Farmers know that when the sky turns green, all hail will break loose." :P

@BetaDecay oh and these guys are a reason why I want to learn russian

°д°

should I delete this challenge? It seems that was a really bad idea...

4:18 PM
@flawr I like it.

@flawr Don't it's really cool

Just because a challenge is difficult doesn't mean it's bad.

I just don't think anyone is going to answer it.

Q: Build a working game of Tetris in Conway's Game of Life

Joe Z.Here is a theoretical question - one that doesn't afford an easy answer in any case, not even the trivial one. In Conway's Game of Life, there exist constructs such as the metapixel which allow the Game of Life to simulate any other Game-of-Life rule system as well. In addition, it is known that...

^ this is hard but its not deleted

4:19 PM
^

@flawr No one was going to answer the sprocket one, either...

And it would be more interesting to have efficient solutions instead of short solutions for this task.

@flawr Someone will, it usually takes about a week for the harder image processing challenges to get an answer
at least from what I've observed

But is a really bad criterion for this, where efficiency would be a better goal, but it is just difficult to measure the efficiency...

4:21 PM
Eh.
I think code golf is fine

Thanks to whichever mod purged the comments on chmod

@flawr That was nice.

this is even better than rickroll

@TùxCräftîñg I am suspicious. Let's see what the onebox says...

I am suspicious. Let's see what the one box says...

Best Rickroll-not-a-Rickroll --

@TùxCräftîñg I can't believe you put that through an URL shortener just so we couldn't onebox it

it do: url shortener -> url shortener -> url shortener -> totally not a rickroll

I didn't think there were that many unique structures

@TimmyD I don't trust that your motives for asking this are morally acceptable

Q: Lock your computer when you walk away!

Khale_KithaWell this is strange. I forgot to lock my monitor when I walked away from my desk, at work, and one of my co-workers decided to have a little fun. When I got back, I found this little C# console app code segment, sitting forefront on my machine. I ran it a few times, but the results don't re...

Are there languages out there designed specifically to be incredibly easy to debug (as opposed to designed to be hard to write bugs in)?

vigil
it instantly destroy the bugs

Not errors, like type-casting bugs and all that.
Like "I want this function to output x and it output y, what wrong with it?"

pretty much any compiled language with gdb?
or to fix this, you need unit tests
hi @Zylviij

@ETHproductions Rust and Haskell come to mind

Rust is in the second category: designed to be hard to write bugs in

4:51 PM
@TùxCräftîñg Hadn't heard of GDB...

both of those languages pride themselves in having very descriptive error messages, even going so far as to propose code revisions

rust is in the two categories: the type checker and the borrow checker don't forgive

(In the meantime, welcome to Programming Puzzles & Code Golf chat, Zylviij!)

@Zylviij That's excellent, but I'm looking for languages that make it easy to see exactly where something goes differently than you expected (not causing an error, just something like a variable has a different value than you wanted it to).

4:54 PM
@Zylviij please post multiple answers for multiple languages
@ETHproductions printf hell is what i use
it works

how long does it take to debug a problem using that method?

or multiple submissions
@ETHproductions ~30mn

I want to see a language where you can flag a variable, then every time the value is changed, it prints the line and the new value.
Debugging would take less than 5 minutes.

use a visual debugger
like VS debugger for C# and VB.NET
eclipse/netbeans debugger for Java

Aha...
