Q: cookie party problem

7h3wh173r48817program to check whether two numbers n & m are divisible,if not how much is required in m for m and n to divisible.Here is my code but some its not passing a test case in hackerrank: int main(){ long int n; long int m,x; cin >> n >> m; if(m>=n){ if(m%n==0){ cout<

@NewMainPosts Please make that go away.

I need help with CoffeeScript!
Anyone?

@DerpfacePython i may be able to help
don't really use coffeescript though

Thanks!
Umm

I mostly use JS, that and some Google-fu should be enough?

11:26 AM
Why doesn't a function like a=(n)->[return 1 if n<1 else return 2] work?
You might need to know some CS for this.

@DerpfacePython ??
@DerpfacePython why the second return

What do you mean?
I was trying to condense down an if/else statement into a one-liner.
And it doesn't work.

isn't that a python-style ternary in CoffeeScript?

Yup.
Thought it would be the same... but it apparently isn't.
:(

It is the same

11:28 AM
If the if/else works like in Python, then you only need one return since 1 if n<1 else 2 is its own enclosed statement.

You're doing return (1 if n<1 else return 2)

That snippet gets evaluated first, then returned.

Ah, I got it now.
Turns out you need a then inside the thing.

11:31 AM
hmm, whoops, didn't read properly

So like this: a=(n)->return if n<1 then 1 else 2
Ah crap.

@DerpfacePython ?

Nah, just saying I solved the problem now.
Thanks guys!

Q: [programming-puzzle]: Isn't it obvious?

muddyfishThe programming-puzzle tag seems a bit useless given we're called 'Programming Puzzles and Code-Golf'. Luiz Eduardo SimõesThe puzzle consists from something like this: You will receive an array of integer with values, then you will receive X number of operations. Should we kind of let new users get 10 reps before letting them post a question?
This should solve some problems

@LeakyNun Probably not.
This rather makes more problems, I think.

How?

@LeakyNun there is meta post about it, right?

No idea

I think i read it somewhere
it was a post from MArtin Ender, where he was listing some changes that would be good on PPCG while not that good on others SE sites

We already have no rep limit for the sandbox, and I've seen 1 rep users posting there, which is encouraging

@Rainbolt yup. Was thinking of this post in particular : meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/8350/…

@trichoplax but we have no rep limit for the main site eather

I'm happy with no rep limit for main, now that anyone can post to the sandbox
Otherwise someone who diligently posts to the sandbox first cannot post their challenge once it's ready

@NewMainPosts Contrary to what others have posted, questions about specific improvements to a code challenge are valid and on-topic here. I've voted to re-open this question.

1:14 PM
@TimmyD "This question" missing a link?

@Rainbolt Apparently didn't click the "reply to" button when I typed it.

Ah
Close votes and downvotes. You guys are brutal
Someone remind me, what does a downvote on PPCG mean exactly?

I mean, for cryin' out loud, this question as just posted like 11 hours ago, and didn't get hammered into oblivion. Just because the array question is from a new user doesn't mean it's not valid.

Unclear answer/badly written question usually

A: Downvoting Questions on Hold

DoorknobVoting and closing serve two separate purposes, so doing both can send two separate signals. The purpose of a (challenge) downvote, as per the tooltip that appears when you hover over it, is: This question does not show any research effort; it is unclear or not useful Granted, the descripti...

1:20 PM
I am surprised that three people think it is a badly written question, but I'm not going to upvote simply to counteract the downvotes

@TimmyD Although Doorknob's answer theoretically supports both golf improvement questions and speed/algorithm improvement questions, the emphasis seems to be on golf, and the separate answer on improving algorithms was downvoted (+7/-11)

I guess that's what you get for making a list question and then combining multiple ideas in one answer
Also, list questions on meta are popularity contests. That one did well because Doorknob posted it
(I have a special hatred towards list questions if you couldn't tell)

I recall :)
@TimmyD I'm not against algorithm improvement questions (I was one of the +7), but the current meta voting doesn't seem to conclusively support them, so quoting meta as support doesn't really work. You could post another answer making a better case for algorithm/fastest code improvements

+31/-10 is pretty heavily leaning towards affirmative consensus
Correction -- +33/-10

I just realized - couldn't this guy have just posted the challenge and posted his answer as an answer to his own challenge, and gotten feedback that way?

1:33 PM
probably

@Rainbolt Possibly. Given some folks, though, the answer might have been hammered for not meeting challenge complexity requirements. :-/

Which could easily be offset by a tag line that says "I know this doesn't meet complexity requirements, but it is as good as I can do so far."
The people on this site are pretty nice if you say the right things
Ask Calvin
Hmmmm... Calvin left? His name isn't in the tab list anymore

You haven't met Helka?

Oh right. I forgot about the name change

Calvin tried to leave once, but couldn't stay away

Even so, he's still not here :P

@βετѧΛєҫαγ did you go on holiday for exams or something?

@muddyfish Yep

I'll probably have to do that at some point :(

1:41 PM
Ahh
Which exams will you have?

A-levels
I think my hardest subject will be further maths

What's it like as a subject?
I'll probably take it for A-level

like regular maths but more
I get 2 a levels from it though

pretty much a requirement at uni for all compsci/science related courses

1:44 PM
Which other subjects are you taking?

I'm also doing Electronics and Computer science, dropping physics
Computer science sort of devolved in the last week to just playing Pokemon go though :)

Most people take 3 a levels
I didn't have my 1.9K snorelax back then though

What I've got planned is Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry...

what level of qualification are you doing?

1:46 PM
At the moment?

yes

I'm (hopefully) dropping physics because it's so much more complex
Cool
Hope you do well

Haha me too. Get the results on the 23rd, I think

I did maths,FSMQ,statistics,physics,chemistry,biology,computer science,English Lang, English lit,Philosophy and Ethics (full course),French and History

1:48 PM
@βετѧΛєҫαγ Good choices - I did exactly the same ones, long ago...

as my GCSEs
From what I can tell, chemistry's much harder/more work at A level

I prefer harder
GCSE was quite boring until I started revising

I spent most of my 'revision' doing code golf :)
(at GCSE anyway)

Hahaha. That's why I stopped
@muddyfish Did you have to do a controlled assessment for CS at GCSE?

The hardest subjects for me were the writing ones - There was an obvious difference in my grades for the writey/creativity ones (history/English/Philosophy) to my sciency ones
@βετѧΛєҫαγ I had to do 2
A 'encryption' one in python and an 'Introduction to linux' as the other
Basically a caesar cipher and an introduction to linux

1:53 PM
Mm I did an Caesar cipher too

I don't think I have the one I did on me anymore
I'm getting my results on the 18th
Scary thoughts
@βετѧΛєҫαγ You going to Nine Worlds?

@muddyfish What's that?

@muddyfish doesn't that apply to all programmers?

Hahaha
Nice

I'll see if I can find my A-level computer science test
The draft one I did
The other one I'm not allowed to access anymore
because its being marked
@βετѧΛєҫαγ what sixth form are you hoping to get to?

2:03 PM
I'm going to stay in my secondary school, Ruthin School

Ok
I only know of a couple of schools nearby that do that
I'm at Hills Road
It's nice there

Does anyone know how that game is called where you control some kind of snake with two controllers?

Snake?
@muddyfish Yeah, I like Cambridge

It's actually a pointer

@El'endiaStarman so, I realized that I'm not a huge fan of how functional programming syntax looks. I'm going to do something similar to a = for x in y: yield x.z (which would be a map). That said, I'm not sure whether to use the word yield (which would yield to either the loop or the function), or to come up with another keyword
if that didn't make sense, sorry!

2:06 PM
It looks like this

Oh, I have no idea

that's an etch a sketch

@βετѧΛєҫαγ I was looking round the university a few weeks ago. It's SO posh.

@NathanMerrill Ahh, thanks! :)

where'd you get the image if you didn't know what it was called?

2:07 PM
@muddyfish Haha, last year I stayed for two nights in the halls at Churchill College
Man, it was nice

It's some kind of puzzle

@βετѧΛєҫαγ They gave me a free lunch

I'm working on file trees and working out how much it's costing to keep files

@El'endiaStarman have you done percent of messages sent by a specific user that contains carets?

2:09 PM
It's actually kind of hard because there are so many files - 6PB of the things

i.e. 5 caret messages / 10 messages all-tim = 50%

Any thoughts about this : meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/2140/… ? Agree with Peter Taylor?

@βετѧΛєҫαγ No, I meant the actual pocket version :3

@Dada >_> summer is over for me, i start school on wednesday

@Adnan Ohh you wanted to know what it was

2:11 PM
Yeah :p

I thought Etch a Sketches were just for... sketching

@βετѧΛєҫαγ there's totally a bug in that game. I was playing for a bit, and my cursor was offset to 1/2 the width

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ damn, that's early... take it as a reminder of the holidays!

2:13 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ School starts in a month and a week for me

@muddyfish same here

Sept 15th?

around it

2:14 PM

i'm sad now

The UCAS deadline is Sept 12th though so I've got to go in early about it

Can mods rename tags?

Yes although not easily

should maybe be moved to . At the moment its description is a mess.
> Go is either an Asian board game for two players, with only a handful of very simple rules but very complex dynamics, or an open-source programming language.

hahaha

Luckily, for now, all its posts area bout the board game

3:32 PM
Could probably just make a go-lang tag and edit the descriptions appropriately
no retagging needed

+1 for golang
its a pretty common name for the language

I'd personally prefer and , since no other programming language has lang in its tag name right now (I think).

right, but we don't do either

hell yeah

3:40 PM
Yeah, but we have more programming language tags than game tags.

I still think because its referred by that all the time

@Lynn What is an area bout? ^^’

I wouldn't say "Hey, lets play some 'Go Game'", but I might say "Lets write this in 'Golang'"

Is it weird that I keep finding myself blocking random idiots and bots who follow me on Twitter (even though I have no tweets) so that I can be proud of the fact that I have 0 followers

Yeah, I see golang or go-lang pretty often

@Lynn Same. It's a synonym on SO too I think

haha

I'm assuming that's "Go" in chinese?

Japanese

@NathanMerrill Japanese. But yeah
Ugh, my internet keeps doing these weird spikes. I'm blaming it on YouTube trying to switch video quality to 1080p60fps constantly

@zyabin101 Cut it out. :|

Ah. ^^’

Why on earth is DETERMINISTIC in Postgre IMMUTABLE

4:16 PM
I should write a markup language that compiles to PPCG challenges.
Specifically, I’m sick of translating what is essentially a “type signature” like String → AsciiArt into a length paragraph of possible I/O options
> If you write a full program, your answer must be printed to STDOUT as a string, optionally followed by a trailing newline. If your answer is a function, you may print to STDOUT, **or** return a string, **or** return an array/list of strings (rows), **or** return a two-dimensional array or nested list of characters.
This is a mess!
I could technically just rely on those things being community consensus, but I hate to do that. To me, that violates the rule that StackExchange posts should be self-contained, sorta

I'd be fine if they were community consensus
Though I'm not a fan of AsciiArt. Maybe 2DString?
eh, I don't like that either
oooh, perhaps we'd just link back to the meta post for each of the "types"
