I found a new sequence that would be fit for OEIS I think
unfortunately, I only have the first 3 terms, trying to calculate the 4th, but its huge
2, 5, 5906
what's the sequence?
rotation-safe latin squares
I'm about to post a challenge on it
basically, a latin square:
1,2,3,4
2,3,4,1
3,4,1,2
4,1,2,3
each column and row is a permutation of range(4)
but the above latin square isn't rotation safe
because if you rotate one of the columns or rows, you get a duplicate row
so range(5) has a latin square that's rotation safe?
1,2,3,4
2,4,1,3
3,1,4,2
4,3,2,1
well, the above is rotation safe
basically
yeah, so n=4 is the smallest you can go
it has 2 distinct latin squares
then why isn't 4 in your list?
21:39
n=5 has 5 distinct latin squares
n = 6 has 5906
and I have no idea on n = 7
sure, just depends on your offset :)
@NathanMerrill by 5 distinct latin squares, do you mean 5 distinct rotation safe squares?
yes :)
replacement
@NathanMerrill well according to wikipedia, for n=7, you'll have to filter through 16,942,080 squares
not that bad
so, the top row is always 1,2,3,4
and the left column is also always 1,2,3,4
@Maltysen generating those squares is already a tough problem. I have to generate a lot of squares to find a latin square in the first place
@NathanMerrill oh, that makes sense
do lists exist?
21:41
hmmm, possibly
didn't think about that
oooh
nvm
oooh, maybe I'm going to stop my program from running
there are actually 61,479,419,904,000 latin squares
and while I prevent a lot of them from occurring in the first place
I still have about 12,198,297,600 to generate
12 billion...hmmm, not too bad
maybe?
oh yeah, wikipedia has that all squares vs. reduced squares
those say only 16 million
@NathanMerrill write it in c?
ask Dennis for speed help.
or golf help
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ seems ok now. @quartata may want to know: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/29546273#29546273

@HelkaHomba oops, pinged the wrong person in my message. :P
@Doorknob can you explain "number quality"?

Q: Rotation-safe Latin squares

Nathan MerrillA Latin square is a square that has no repeated symbols in either the X or Y columns. For example: ABCD DABC CDAB BCDA is one such square. Notice how every column and row contains a permutation of the same 4 letters. However, our Latin square has a problem: If I were to rotate the seco...

@NathanMerrill ಠ_ಠ
@NathanMerrill Random number quality. As in, PRNGs that cycle, etc.
22:01
@Mego yup that was the one. TY
oh, also, I'm pretty sure I'm going to work at google. Their hiring committee said I was just fine, and now all that is left is pay negotiations :)

@Doorknob also, did you really read the problem statement that fast?
it was maybe 10 seconds before I got the comment notification :)
@NathanMerrill No, but I saw you talking about it in here :)
@NathanMerrill Very nice. Congratulations!
@NathanMerrill Cool
@NathanMerrill Ooh, that's awesome :D Congrats!
22:05
@NathanMerrill gj.
thanks all
@HelkaHomba I have absolutely no idea how that could have happened
itsintheotherroom.heroku.net:25667
Probably a bukkit bug
I thought you knew o_O
Eh, I don't even play on it, so I don't honestly care whether you do or not.
I'm sure others may have different opinions.
Actually I do know how it might have happened. If the server was under really heavy load the leave event might have fired after the player count was updated
so blame threads

I wonder if I'll ever find out where all those views suddenly came from
Nice! :D
the referring sites list definitely doesn't include the source of those

@MartinBüttner my group of robot computers I hacked
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ nice, did you also make github accounts for all of them and let some of them star the repo? :P

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ jolf?
My Vim plugin has 3 unique visitors but 6 stars. How is that even possible?
that is publicity, it goes following exponential progress, 1 person tells 2, 2 tell 2^2,2^2 tell 2^3 etc, the jump from 2^n to 2^n+1 for bigger n's is as remarkable as hell
22:54
and relink?
lost my .vimrc a while ago
@AlexA. some of your visitors weren't unique enough
@Agawa001 not guarenteed that formula though, that isn't even max/min
you know, just some mainstream people.
> We noticed that most of your visitors are sheeple. WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!
imgine if they are 10 not just 2
22:55
... still doesn't help
Martin is in chat o.O That never seems to happen anymore
Maybe because we only talk about silly inconsequential topics (like how often high rep users are in chat)
mumbles something about the signal to noise ratio and losing valued users in chat
mumbles "but I *like* avocad
22:58
chance and holidays and martins github presides google responses when you type "hexagony", still doesnt help ?
@MartinBüttner did you know hexagony is a board game?
when you created the language?
When was the last time 4 adjacent TNB chat messages were each from one of the 4 mods?
