Q: Text art or ASCII art? Which tag should we have?

trichoplaxThe tag wiki for ascii-art says This challenge involves creating or parsing pictures using text characters as the paint. Typically this uses only 95 printable (from a total of 128) characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1963. This makes it clear that "ASCII" here refers to the origi...

^ being lazy is no excuse

Should I get a book about Java? or should I just stick with online docs/SO

@ConorO'Brien If you want to really learn it, yes
If you just want to be familiar with it no

what if I was to take a computer science course that used Java?

@ASCII-only haven't made anything on it yet

1:11 AM
@ConorO'Brien tbh i learned more from 1 night of Java googling than 3 weeks of CS class

@Downgoat wow

@Conor @Downgoat I'm completely new to classes in ES6; is there a way to change the behavior of myClassObject[0]?
Where myClassObject is an instance of MyClass

@ETHproductions you mean, with the operator [], or all get calls?

@ConorO'Brien All get calls with numbers
like a[1], a[-1], a[0.5], etc.

Mac Preview is actually has some pretty good image editing tools

1:15 AM
@ETHproductions yes
those are exactly what proxies are

Proxies? I'll have to look that up

oh
better than my approach :P

I've been holding off on learning non-golfy ES6 features for so long because they're not super well supported yet

Does Chrome have classes yet even

1:17 AM
@quartata even safari has classes

Safari actually was one of the first to support classes
it was super weird

@Downgoat Proxies are awesome :D
I know what I'll be doing for the next hour

@ETHproductions ikr :D

Does anyone know where I can get a complete corpus of all XKCD comics? (as text obviously)
IIRC there are official transcripts but I'm not sure where they are

@Downgoat So in order to make an object be proxy-able, you just have to return a proxy from the constructor?

1:25 AM
Cionstrcutors cant return anything

oh... I must be a little rusty in that area
@Downgoat I guess my question is now, how do you make a class proxied?

@ETHproductions like:
export default const MyClass = new Proxy(class MyClass {
}, proxyObj);
classes are also first-class objects

oooooh
That makes much more sense
MyClass4 = new Proxy(class {
  constructor (a) { this.a = a; }
}, { get (target, name) {
  if (name in target)
    return target[name];
  return 7;
} } );
var op = new MyClass4("abc")
op.oiasndfm

.__. why are you writing golfed code if you are not code-golfing

op.oiasndfm returns undefined :/
Although MyClass4.oiasndfm returns 7
I must be dreadfully misunderstanding something...

1:40 AM
hm :/ you might have to write a custom getter for prototype for MyClass then

Like new Proxy(MyClass4.prototype, {})?

Object.defineProperty(MyClass4, 'prototype', {
     get: function(whatever) {
     }
});

no idea if it'll work tho

> TypeError: can't redefine non-configurable property "prototype"

1:43 AM
Help me pick a topic for my neuroscience essay: strawpoll.me/11337522 if you can't tell, the theme is "drugs."

@Downgoat what about
Object.defineProperty(MyClass4.prototype, something, {
     get: function(whatever) {
          console.log(whatever);
     }
});

hm :/ idk ask on SO?

That's what I was thinking

(note: you can do this in cheddar :D)

Awesome :D But cheddar doesn't run on every webpage

1:47 AM
class MyClass4 {
    get * (name) -> 7
}
@ETHproductions well it is made in node...
I could try to webpack/browserify it to a browser JS thing

2:05 AM
@Downgoat get *?

@Downgoat Maybe make that __get__? get is a pretty common method name that I think people would not want reaerved

@ASCII-only * is wildcard
@quartata get is not reserved?

Then what is that?
oh
ohhhhhh
I like (if it works the way I think)

@Downgoat name is optional argument right?

It's like @synthesize it creates getters

2:09 AM
@ASCII-only in this case yeah, you wouldn't need name
@quartata idk what @synthesize does
questrion: should nullable-typed arg be an optional arg?

@ETHproductions I just thought of a solution but it's more of a hack than a solution. Should I still post it?

Post away, just make sure to mention that it's more of a hack than a solution

2:47 AM
Looks like an even uglier hack but at least it's more complete and also on official Mozilla/ES6 docs

@ASCII-only wait what

Perfectly fine with it, just unclear on what's actually wrong with it

@ASCII-only docs are user contributed not "By Mozilla"

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ ?
question: how to inheritance without creating an instanceof each superclass?
should I manually copy each method & var?

@Downgoat My own program
It's been crawling the XKCD Lorenz tree

@Downgoat ??

I am trying to do inheritance in cheddar
idk how pls halp

I have to recapitalize/characterize text and describe images manually

Extend superclass and change prototype maybe?

2:59 AM
And the paths just never end

@ASCII-only that is problem... how to extend superclass

class Foo extends Superclass {}?

no I mean like how to do inheritance like in the actual implementation
example/meaning?

nvm you can just use ES5 inheritance i think
brb, looking for random article

yeah but this needs to be dunamic

@Undo Popularity contests that simply ask to do X creatively have pretty much fallen out of scope. The best use case of the popcon tag is for challenges where the quality of the output (not the source code) can only be judged by humans. In all other cases, popcons should be based on a task that is rather hard to solve and some criteria voters should base their judgement on.

This challenge is almost cheaply “extendable”. You could take Sp3000’s Python answer and throw in lots of “free” languages and make it a mess.
Like Brainfuck etc

@Mego You know what else is terrifying? That's the golfiest answer on the challenge right now
