What is chopping an array?

IDK, maybe it is like slicing an array.

splitting it up?
that's what it does in Pyth

cU9 3
[[0, 1, 2], [3, 4, 5], [6, 7, 8]]

3:16 AM
I don't know pyth. At all.

chop(range(9), 3)

Ohhhh
thanks
:D

no problem
ughhhh flask-socketio is being so annoying

what is that?

3:21 AM
oh
I thought you were saying "socketio" as some latin word

@Maltysen Seriously, I have no idea how Plasma 5 works. It is very different from the previous version.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it's-a me, socketio!
3

@Doorknob冰 Yup! XD

3:35 AM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Only if encoding Y actually works for submission X. I know that for example Julia can't handle pretty much anything but UTF-8 encoded input.
@Doorknob冰 Yes, me too! (cc @PhiNotPi)
Except I don't think I care enough to cover my webcam. If you try hard enough you can find pictures of me online anyway.

If you try really really hard, you can identify a picture of me based on information from this chatroom and the fact that I'm wearing a SE mod hat in said picture, but if you're that dedicated I don't think it matters anyway. :P

When did you get a hat...

You don't have a mod hat? If you poke the right people you can get one.

brb, getting my poking finger ready

I think Tim Post is still Lord of All Swag.

3:41 AM

You know what's anomalous? The fact that none of the 3 answers on this question

Q: Can a fraction be simplified using Anomalous Cancellation?

GamrCorpsAnomalous Cancellation (from Wolfram Alpha): Anomalous cancellation is a "canceling" of digits of a and b in the numerator and denominator of a fraction a/b which results in a fraction equal to the original. Note that if there are multiple but differering counts of one or more digits in the n...

I noticed that
I haven't upvoted the challenge nor the answers because I'm still unclear on parts of the challenge. (The things mentioned in comments.)

Hehehe
How do you find all those cool utf-8 letter lookalikes?

Mac magic

Ahh, win 10 here...

3:53 AM
On Mac you can hold down a letter key and a menu of available diacritics will pop up, then you press a number corresponding to the one you want. So å is a (hold) 7.

@JAtkin, @Zgarb, @ThomasKwa: got your responses for the Time Capsule!

@Doorknob冰, @AlexA. Neat

Let's hope Pyth is still good then.

That's 24 characters total now.
Two duplicates, one triplicate(?).

I wonder if there will be some kind of overflow if you nest enough duplicates.

4:02 AM
Quick Poll: How old should the minimum driving age be, in your opinion?

I just gained the ability to get a learner's permit yesterday. IMO it's far too early :P

That's like a Stack Exchange user privilege, except for real life.

20

@ZachGates I think 16 is fine, but I think training should be more rigorous. I also think there should be an age at which drivers have to be retested for competency. (Think old people drivers.)

That sounds like a better idea than limiting it to 20 ;)

4:07 AM
For perspective, in Niger, the licensing age is 23, and in El Salvador, the licensing age is 15.

Isn't it crazy low in Nebraska? Like 14?

In South Dakota it's 14, yeah

Hmm, apparently only for driving to and from school: dmv.nebraska.gov/examining/licpermits.html#LPE

It varies by state? :/
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I guess it's cool. It's at least a little chilly. :P

4:11 AM
@AlexA. haha

@AlexA. Yep
@mınxomaτ That's called a "hardship license" in Tennessee. It's granted to people who have divorced parents, a single parent, no parents, etc.

@ZachGates That's ... odd.
I got my license with 17, but I hate to drive.

@mınxomaτ Sure is. I know a girl who has one because both her parents work and can't drive her to school (and she didn't want to ride the bus). I was extremely surprised that a judge granted it.

4:30 AM
Hey y'all, quick question: Javascript's default encoding is UTF-16. Is it okay to specify the byte encoding as, say, ISO/IEC 8859-1 instead of UTF-16?

The submission in question works in a particular encoding, you can use that encoding.

Yes, iff you can pass the exact byte sequence to the JavaScript interpreter and have it successfully figure it out.
ninja'd

^
Yours is better

I'm pretty sure Javascript ES6 works in ISO/IEC 8859-1. (Someone verify that for me.)
Thanks anyway.

Encodings confuse me too much for me to try to find byte-saving encodings. I do everything but APL in UTF-8. APL is easy enough because 1 character = 1 byte on the APL code page.
Dennis even made his own encoding for Jelly. I can't even imagine doing that. O_O

4:37 AM
Yeah, but the reason I bring this up is because some ES6 answers that I think can be improved with btoa and atob would be multiple bytes per char in UTF-8, but one byte per char in ISO.
Y'know, just some abused base-64 functions as compression.

Haha :P
I guess try saving a file with the encoding you want and running it with JS to see what happens.

4:51 AM
Seems to work fine (at least for me).
Yay!

Make sure you check the file size (sans trailing newline) to verify that the encoding is really what you think it is.
(wc -c)

wc is the most legit command line utility

Happy New Year!
^ please star!! please!

I use Julia to get byte counts for my Julia code: sizeof("<julia code with quotes and $ escaped>").
R hates encodings so I just use nchar() because all of my code is ASCII

I just copy my Ruby code from irb and wc it.
Or do :.!wc -c from vim

4:57 AM
goodbye (don't star!)

I just watched a shiny ball on TV
@GamrCorps I got your time capsule thingy

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

Who wants to take that on? Because I sure don't :P

5:12 AM

I have answers on the top two of those. >.<

Oh hey I had the first starred message of 2016 :)

I had the first starred message of UTC 2016, which is what really counts :P
(and the first question!)

@Doorknob冰 ok

@Ampora, @grc: got your time capsule thingies as well
We're up to 27 characters

grc
5:19 AM
do we get to see it?

Sure! Just gimme a year. :P
(it's supposed to be secret, so people don't submit letters based on what's already there)

grc
ok :(
or create esolangs based on the characters I guess

yeah

5:37 AM
@Doorknob冰 thanks

5:50 AM
Probably a bad idea, but use this URI to join a PPCG Skype Chat: skype:?chat&blob=YOCdOTODbKo6B8AtgGxzZ-2xHNnJY3ROtVrxzGdvp5AiXwVuuDdJOjmFRsE1YO‌4KTXZ9T1In5-Kk2IY (@PhiNotPi 's idea: bit.ly/1OochZ3)

I am unable to open said URI

I don't know how to open said URI

okay I used Chromium's inspect to set a link to that and clicked it
that felt dirty and nothing happened still

It felt dirty?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

that was poorly phrased
@GamrCorps how about you just invite me via Skype? Username KeyboardFire

5:56 AM
Ok, if you dont know how to use URI, just msg your user

> msg your user
what does that mean

I used it, and it claimed to have opened in Skype in both Chromium and Firefox, but then nothing continued to happen

skype is garbage why not use discord or something

because everyone else uses Skype

^

5:57 AM
^

I am also in Skype and do not know what do

like "my username is foobar" so I can /add foobar

@Calvin'sHobbies It's a text conversation anyway so it's basically The Nineteenth Byte except there's only three people at the moment.

there were skybooms
they boomed in the sky

AH DUCK AND COVER

can I join?

sure, either add me or send your skype user

Of course! @GamrCorps ^

6:05 AM
@GamrCorps I think I have a skype...
@GamrCorps is there an underscore?

yes

I think I added you. Hopefully that was the right person....

yep

6:12 AM
you guys now know my real name but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I always rename people to something that I'll recognize them by anyway.
[12:10:18 AM] Keyboard Fire: you're Maltysen?
[12:10:41 AM] PPCG::GamrCorps: either that or its some random guy who added me
[12:11:02 AM] PPCG::GamrCorps: hopefully the former
[12:11:34 AM] PPCG::Alex A.: It might make it easier if the person said something :P
[12:11:41 AM] PPCG::GamrCorps: ^
Complete with namespaces :P

lol
@Maltysen well everyone has known my name since the Dennis numbers OEIS thing

@Maltysen ...do we?

Yeah the name of my skype account

Oh! Okay

Happy New Years, friends and mods

Well, we don't know if the person in there is you

how do I converse with you

@Mego Because mods aren't friends?
@Maltysen Speak into the Skype hole

Mods are people too! ... I think

I mean type into the box

6:14 AM
@Mego Happy New Year!

which box?
I have different boxes for each person

the group one
that says Programming Puzzles and Code Golf Skype Chat

i don't see that

@AlexA. Mods are the special kind of friends that we only acknowledge when we need something :P

@AlexA. what are you talking about. I made no mistakes :P

6:20 AM
haha
Suuuuure
I'm not sure what you're seeing on your end. On my end it says you're in the chat but not online.

for me it says you're in the chat and online

what are recents?
I'm on the web one
I don't see that

Is a Skype thing happening?

Maltysen hasn't been able to access it yet :P

true, true

6:28 AM
Who all is in it?

Alex A., GamrCorps, Maltysen, and me

@flawr: 3Blue1Brown is great! I watched "What does it feel like to invent math?" and subscribed immediately after.

@PhiNotPi It's text-based, no video
It's basically here except fewer people and no pinging

Then what's the point?

... although using Skype for just text kind of defeats the purpose :P
^^

6:33 AM
^

/me considers starting an audio call and not saying anything

hah

@PhiNotPi Well, technically it was your idea originally
4 hours ago, by PhiNotPi
Someone should get a group skype call going.

/me considers turning up the volume on the true crime show that's going in the background

eh screw skype

6:37 AM
Skype is just the man bringing you down.

You should let him bring you down, @Phi.

I started a call in the Skype thing
now we're being silent at each other
very intensely
I heard a dog
[12:44:12 AM] PPCG::Alex A.: The call has been going for 3 minutes and no one has said anything.

I'm making a skype account

... you were the one who proposed this, and you didn't have a Skype account?

6:48 AM
hahahahaha

You should join us in our 7.5-minute call of silence.

lol

waits till it becomes an awkward group video call

We're taking a moment of silence to bring in the new year. A very long, awkward moment of silence.

hahahaha
8.5 minutes and counting...
at this point I'm considering just playing the rickroll audio
... @AlexA. seriously just did it

6:52 AM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

you know who's the kid on the call now

First audio signal in 10 minutes

never gonna say goodbye
never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

How to join?

Add me as a contact (KeyboardFire) and I'll add you to the group
never gonna run around and desert you

6:53 AM
so eager to listen to rick roll on skype ?

I mean at least it's some form of noise
seriously how many times does the chorus repeat

I was wondering the same thing

haha

I was like "jesus this is a long song"

Well, the Skype call is approaching 15 minutes with no PPCG user having said anything

it probably wasn't

hahaha that indentation in his face though

Any particular reason for Skype rather than Discord?

more people have skype

Discord has this username, my Skype has my real name, so I'd like clear reasons

Well, Discord is better overall. Especially since it's low-latency

7:00 AM
FOUR PEOPLE IN THE SKYPE CHAT AND COUNTING!

Remember, I'm on the other side of the planet

zero words spoken and counting

Discord doesn't have video though

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!! (At least in my timezone)

Almost 20 minutes, 0 words!

7:00 AM
@GamrCorps Happy New Year!
(one hour late here)

@GamrCorps Happy New Year! :D

@GamrCorps Happy New Year
Are we doing a video call or just voice, btw?

Just voice right now

Well alright, I'll add KeyboardFire, but don't put me in the call yet. I'm not going to be home from lunch for another hour

7:06 AM
25 minutes, 0 words

26 minutes, 0 words, 1 half-dog-bark, 1 rickroll, 1 Sprint advertisement, 1 throat-clearing

WORDS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN

Aaand I've watched basically all of 3Blue1Brown's videos...

Doorknob is officially the only one who has not spoken in the skype chat yet...

coz u all will know that he's a girl

lol

7:27 AM
In the Skype-all, when no one calls..

7:59 AM
huh, retarded headlines saying the 46 years thing on facebook is a "Unix glitch" SMH
what's that skype thing you guys are talking about?

@aditsu There was a skype call going on
You can add me as a contact phinotpi and I can add you to the call.
Although there is not currently anyone else...
Alex just left

2 hours later…

I added a wrap detect and it now terminates without having found something...

Q: Explain the decimals

nicaelGiven a decimal in the form of <decimal>, <precision>, you draw its graphical representation. Examples: Input: 6.75, 4, output: 6||| 7 ---- 6.75 is the number to explain, 4 is the number of dashes below the number. Input: 10.5, 6, output: 10||| 11 ------ Input: 20.16, 12, output 2...

12:44 PM
Hello.

1:23 PM
Hi, happy New Year

1 hour later…
2:24 PM
@aditsu uh, what happens with the error message here: cjam.aditsu.net/#code=.5mO

huh, that's funny

lol, that seems random :)
Happy New Year To All PPCG Users!

2:38 PM
@MartinBüttner seems to be a block parsing problem: {.5}

@yeti Ok. :-( I thought as much.

@aditsu that's actually an issue: {.5}`

you mean already reported?

@trichoplax, @Optimizer, @ProgramFOX, @flawr, @randomra, @MartinBüttner: got all of your time capsule characters
That makes 33!

@wizzwizz4 seed terminated without solution (i added wrap arround detection)

2:40 PM
Okay!

@Doorknob冰 cOOl

@aditsu no, I mean it's not just weird, it's an actual bug that can affect programs (mostly quines I guess)

ok, well that's what I was saying too
I think I have a fix for it

3:17 PM
hi.. I have in to peer pressure.. see latest edit to codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/68176/…

yippee we are now another year closer to not being able to store dates in signed 32 bit integers

@quartata or even years :)

True
Anyways bleh 2016

@quartata the much feared Y2G

3:26 PM
@randomra Yes

Well, that's 2147483648

Also known as the MariaDB infestation of great justice
or something

It's really weird seeing every single thing saying "... '15". It's annoying
For example, I just saw a comment: "Feb 11 '15"

in Charcoal HQ, 15 hours ago, by Normal Human
^ This is how I noticed the beginning of New Year...

3:29 PM
Oh I missed the Skype call of silence
Whose idea was that anyways

slowly raises hand
Well, it was PhiNotPi's idea to make a Skype group
it was my idea to start a call and say nothing

"printable ascii" WHYYY

@BlockCoder1392 ?

PPCG time capsule string

Oh.

3:31 PM
I was going to put a combining diacritical mark

shhhh it's sekrit :P

That would have made things very inconvenient for us next year
@Doorknob冰 It's sanskrit?

So in the end I put
package main

import "fmt"

func main() {
for i := 32; i < 127; i++ {
fmt.Print(string(i))
}
}

That makes things very inconvenient for Doorknob right now

@BlockCoder1392 Go?

3:34 PM
Yes
