Q: Minecraft Mirrored

Chat RelayThis is Calvin. Just trying to get 20 rep so this user can chat in the PPCG Minecraft Server chatroom. Write a program or function that takes in a positive integer. If the integer is even (2, 4, 6, ...), print or return this exact ASCII art string: __ __ __ ...

suspends @Calvin'sHobbies for sockpuppeting

Okay guys, I have to admit I used @Calvin'sHobbies's name in my post just to get quick rep.

Great. Calvin's sock is going to hit 10k in a few weeks at this rate.

Its confirmed that its not Calvin as there were so many extra spaces in that spec .

6:12 PM
That's how it got the Teacher badge... I was just about to ask that.

@Sp3000 where ?

Check the front page, there's 3

@Calvin'sHobbies For the record, you could have just asked me to grant that user permission to post in your chatroom instead of posting 3 answers and upvoting them. :P

Well that wouldn't be nearly as fun...

Wait... what? The parent account for chat.stackexchange.com/users/157706/chat-relay doesn't exist... O_o

6:17 PM
Yea, it's pointing to 38900 instead of 42607 for some reason.

@ChatRelay We need to determine that you're really Calvin
Tell us something that only Calvin would know/say

I'm pretty sure it's not, and Calvin is just going along with it to troll us.

^ I agree

Besides, don't we have enough chat bots as it is?

It's for the minecraft room, not here.

6:22 PM
It's Calvin. Mod tools confirm this. :P

"IP != user" or something like that (unless you're filing a copyright suit. then anything goes).

@Doorknob No such tools exist!

Are mod tools just you guessing that it's him? ;)

@Doorknob Didn't know that.
How can I prove it?
@BetaDecay Do you believe this is me?

@Calvin'sHobbies Well I don't know now... This could be one massive cover-up to bring down PPCG

6:25 PM
I'm not sure of anything right now.

For all we know, everyone is a llama

If only I had a panic room :|

@Optimizer No, we know that's not true. I'm no dirty llama.

and I am the only human

@Calvin'sHobbies Did you create the "Chat Relay" account, self-delete it, and then create it again? Because... that's what this page is supposedly telling me.

6:25 PM
@Geobits A real llama in disguise would say that
@Geobits "dirty" ?? You are the one turning on your hardware by touching it at the right spot in this chatroom!

That just means you don't know I'm not a llama. I do know that we're not "all llamas", since I have one counterexample.

Oh, I think I fixed it @Calvin'sHobbies. Try now.

@Optimizer My only question is how do you use a keyboard?
Llamas have hooves

HULK SMASH!

@Doorknob Quite possibly. I apparently had the email associated with an account before so I deleted the account for a fresh start.

6:27 PM
@Sp3000 haven't made any progress with TIS over the weekend but I'm giving peak detection another go now

Yay!
@Doorknob Thanks

:) good luck (I haven't played at all, was playing Her Story earlier)

GAAAAAH, A CREEPER

@Calvin'sHobbies That's it then. The chat profile was still pointing to the old (deleted) account. I changed the parent chat profile to a random site and then back, which seems to have fixed it.

Now no one can switch between accounts that quickly šŸ˜Ÿ

6:29 PM
I read "sockpuppeting" as "socketpupping" three times before my make-believe dyslexia finally resolved itself.

Simultaneous Proof

Simultaneous Proof

Nice teamwork, guys!

@ChatRelay You're Alex A aren't you... I knew there was something up with that guy ;)

I guess the creeper blew up the bird?

6:31 PM
@ChatRelay Nope. Your message IDs are two apart. :P

@BetaDecay He wasn't satisfied by just getting massive upvotes on his comments.
2
@Geobits creeper was for the TIS game.

I don't know what that means, but I assumed it was for minecraft.

no

@Optimizer nope

no?

6:33 PM
No.

oh .. no..
So.. how many stars for actually getting it suspended ? This is just like close votes .. right .. ?
2

@Sp3000 oh wow, while not optimal, my first working attempt is left of the main peak in all three categories :)

Mine's all the way to the right :P
Nice job

Anyone know a way to send a message to a SE chatroom from some external script? (like the api but for chat)

What happens if I click ignore user? Does it come up with a message saying "Talk to the hand 'cos the face ain't listening" every time they try to tag me or something?

6:38 PM
@Sp3000 what's your approach?

@Calvin'sHobbies We've already had this conversation today ;)
Look back through the transcript and Geobits found a link

Keep current min/max, backup, sub new number, check JLZ/JGZ, return min/max

Basically, stealing Doorknob's chatbot is the first step.

@BetaDecay Can you link the link?

I spent a lot on the resetting after each sequence :/

6:39 PM

@Sp3000 that's what I tried at first, but having to keep track of both current, next and difference was annoying
it's possible to remember only the current (min or max), by doing x-y, then clamp to 0 from one side and then add y again
if you to non-negative, you get the max, if you clamp to non-positive you get the min

@BetaDecay Sorry, I meant Javascript specifically

Hmm will keep in mind, that sounds nicer :)

Ruby's not bad:
4 hours ago, by Geobits
@BetaDecay First thing to know is that it's a type of corundum, much like sapphire.

@Optimizer and here is the link of the link of the link .. just in case some one misses the link of the link ..

Though ruby could work

@Calvin'sHobbies Yeah, I would have liked that. Ruby is just ordered nonsense to me

got this approach down to 32 instructions now which seems to be minimal

:) nice - got min nodes yet?

6:44 PM
hm it wasn't... 31 now, still points to the same bin
I've got 6 nodes, which is the left peak, so 5 seems to be optimal

Hm... k

6:57 PM
got 5 nodes

7:18 PM
@Sp3000 Exposure Mask Viewer is incredibly fiddly :/

I was thinking of possible code golfs. Are golfs that challenge a user to write a complete command line tool to do a simple task with a website acceptable?
Like an integration challenge

try posting to sandbox..

@Optimizer Oh, just noticed that. Thanks!

7:42 PM
@Sp3000 4 rows complete. one more to unlock that last segment in the corner. the last four levels look pretty hairy though :D
@NathanMerrill what's your progress on TIS? (you did get it in early access, right?)

8:03 PM
Meta question: how do I add tags to an answer?

[tag:code-golf], I think.

you don't
oh that's what you mean

I mean, you can display one

yeah, what Vioz- said
and [meta-tag:discussion] if you want to reference a meta tag

8:06 PM
@Vioz- Thanks, worked.
Where can I read more about the various syntax for Stack Exchange Questions and Answers, btw?

Like this?

@MartinBĆ¼ttner Thanks c:

When you're writing a question/answer, there's a ? link in the toolbar for help also.

Gotcha

Q: Linear Combination with Column Restrictions

jrodatusThis is a puzzle I am currently facing but is not a contest in any way. The SOverflow community prefers to limit algorithm questions to implementations of specific, recognized algorithms. Math SE lists "algorithm implementation/design" as off-topic, and therefore I'm honestly not sure where else ...

@MartinBüttner, there are a couple of questions in the sandbox at the moment which could use some input from a real physicist.

"real" physicist
links?

@NewSandboxedPosts also kind of curious what anybody thinks of the referenced post

You're more of a physicist than me. I only did a year of it at uni.

8:38 PM
I took a physics class in high school once, so I'm probably good for anything from fluid dynamics to quantum chromodynamics.

^ Same

@MartinBĆ¼ttner No I didn't. I did order the paper version

oh okay

but I haven't gotten that yet

you should really get TIS ;)

8:47 PM
I haven't even finished spacechem yet

neither have I

and then after that, infinifactory
then, maybe, TIS

but I find TIS a lot more enjoyable... I'll probably give spacechem another (third) go at some point though... although I might try infinifactory first
@PeterTaylor can't say much about the first one. I'm not familiar with the equations, and while I could probably double check them against other sources I don't think it actually matters for the challenge whether they're exact. the entire challenge just seems to be "implement this lengthy closed form solution" with some physics fluff around it
@BetaDecay for your time travellers challenge, the equation is a bit misleading. t' is not the change in time (plug in v = 0, which should give 0 time dilation but gives t instead). t' is already the dilated time. I think it's clearer if you call them Ī”t and Ī”t'. then it's clear that the equation describes how much time passes in the two frames between two fixed events.
all of this only makes sense if there's some sort of reference time though.
so ideally the app should have some way to set both clocks to 0 and then present the time elapsed for both observers since the last reset.
I can't really judge the effect of acceleration and gravity for this calculation though, although I'm not sure it's important for that to be entirely correct for the challenge.
my main concern is rather that I find it really unlikely that you'll get a lot (or any) participation with a challenge about such specific hardware
actually, I think acceleration might not matter, because it's essentially just a change of frame of reference that is not picked up by your clock. using the instantaneous velocity should be correct, provided you can neglect the influence of gravity. assuming you're on the surface of the earth, the difference in gravity between you and CERN is probably less problematic than the issues experienced by GPS satellites. (I think that's the reason we need GR for GPS)

9:06 PM
@MartinBĆ¼ttner Apparently the effect of gravity can be ignored if you remain on an equipotential, and the surface of a planet is a fair approximation of that.

ninja'd

Ah well. If my reflexes are that slow it must be bedtime ;)

large parts of my GR course went a bit over my head to be honest. but I think I remember that time dilation in GR boils down to "the more strongly you are affected by gravity, the slower your clock runs", so the reason GPS needs to account for this is just that the satellites are higher up.

And the gravitational changes experienced by the photons in transit also need to be taken into account, not just the dilation of the source clocks.

yes, that's true, but we're not transmitting any data in this challenge (I'm hoping that the geolocation function provided by the SDK takes care of the GR-voodoo)

9:10 PM
Maybe we can use something like the Hafeleā€“Keating experiment as inspiration, since that experiment measured time dilation at "reasonable" speeds (flying).
Just looking over that article... "the Hafeleā€“Keating experiment in a frame of reference at rest with respect to the center of the earth" is probably important.

3 hours later…
11:45 PM
@Sp3000 one left from the first batch... (the sequence sorter) I hope I'll sort that out tomorrow

:) looks like I have a lot of catching up to do

which ones are you missing?

I haven't done any of the image ones yet

ah okay
well good luck with those then! :) let me know how it's going
