00:00 - 17:0017:00 - 00:00

5:02 PM
lol

that is soo annoying

Unhandled operator after f: z :(

:z
f takes minimum 2 operands
unless its fX

I was trying to zip with a constant array

well...
zip is still unary :P
@Sp3000 is it one-dimensional?
so are you expecting to get a list of list of pairs?

5:07 PM
Yeah, did I remember wrong?

how about :a.+?
no

so... in that 1 to 9 = 100 challenge, are we not allowed to do -1 ?

that's bullshit

f.+

:af.+ maybe
yeah
@Optimizer "between the numbers"

5:08 PM
oh ok

Yay that works

I have 52 :(
ok 49
@Sp3000 how much you have ?

I gave up when I remembered that evalling in CJam doesn't actually work

lol

Also, I should really sleep :P

5:21 PM
is that -M5.10.0 really free ?

Yes, apparently (it's even specifically mentioned)

@Optimizer sure why not... he could probably go searching for an old binary of the interpreter.

I don't know what it does

just runs an old version, I guess

43

5:30 PM
nice

who says eval doesn't work :P

Oh right, it's only +-. For some reason I thought * was in there too

40

added my Retina solution for the Pauli matrices

5:57 PM
well, my itertools Python3 solution for the sum100 problem haven't turned out to be competitive, so I will just post it here :
from itertools import*
s='12345678'
for o in product(['','+','-'],repeat=8):v=''.join(map(''.join,zip(s,o)))+'9';eval(v)-100or print(v)
maybe for some tips and tricks :)
can you merge two lists without two ''.join()'s

6:35 PM
You can knock 2 bytes off by not using s='123456789' and just using zip('123456789',o) in your list comprehension

we srsly dont have bubble sorting ?

@Optimizer couldn't find it either

6:58 PM
now let's find an esolang whose built-in sort is bubblesort :)

standard lophole

I think this could be neat in Mathematica...

how is sort implemented in cjam ?

@Optimizer I'm sure it just forward's to Java's built-in sort, which is likely quick sort

it cant be
because it supports more then 1 datatype

6:59 PM
so? I'm sure there's a Java sort that takes a callback

ah yeah

Java either uses a quicksort or a merge sort depending on the data types

@Optimizer why? a built-in which solves the task is a standard loophole?

yeah
like completely solving.
somewhere there is a link in this chatroom. either future or past

@randomra no it's not
there is a loophole post for it, but it doesn't have another upvotes to be considered valid.
that being said, many people do frown upon it.

7:15 PM
anyway, I went with the bogosort approach for fun:
from random import*
while m!=sorted(m):p=randrange(8);m[p:p+2]=m[p+1],m[p]
I think it's ok with the rules

haha
that would probably shorten my Retina code as well :P

WTF @MartinBüttner
(re the mathematica explanation)
:D

they are annotations of the tokens

I know
but its soo ascii-art
I just thought of a challenge based on that
tomorrow.

will it involve image processing? :)

7:25 PM
yes
the input will actually be a jpg image, containing two array of strings

New challenge idea: convert executables into music.

does Retina have some kind of random?

@randomra no -.-

how you wanted to use the bogosort then?

7:42 PM
well, I can't :P
@Optimizer can you check if an array is not sorted in less than 5 bytes?
ah I can do 4

even if I can (while I cannot) that would mean that I sort the array first, which, I guess is using quicksort :P

hm, that's true.
@Optimizer if you ever need it, here is 4 bytes: __$#

__$= is same, right ?
which I was initially doing using a do-while
oh, !

yeah ^

8:17 PM
@PhiNotPi Does Microsoft own the rights to that music? :P

9:06 PM
In python why does something like a[:]=[1] assign the value to a? I thought a[:] is a new list. So does python handles indexing differently on the left side of an assignment?

Yes compare with a[1] = 3
This changes the existing a at index 1, rather than creating anything new
Slicing does the same when used on the left hand side

essentially, [...]= is a different operator than [...]

I see, thanks

@MartinBüttner I see what you mean about other types of tips questions. I guess what I'd be most interested in is tips on asking questions, but I'm not sure if that belongs in meta/chat or tips on main

9:21 PM
@Joshpbarron you should rather try the Pauli matrices :P
@trichoplax I suppose questions about how to devise good code golf challenges could (and in my opinion should) be on topic. but I can also see a lot of resistance towards that idea.

Link @MartinBüttner
?*

@Joshpbarron this
(I was joking though)

@MartinBüttner It would be a great place to refer people to though...

whats with 1-9 digits and concatenation of them ?
3 challenges today

Maybe we should get the community's opinion on whether tips about how to ask good questions should be allowed in main, and then either introduce them or host them elsewhere if there is objection to them being on site

9:35 PM
A question about how to ask questions looks meta to me...

9:50 PM
What about a question about how to ask questions on meta ?
gotta sleep.

10:04 PM
That's clearly for the SE meta

1 hour later…
11:09 PM
The awkward silence ends now.

And starts again now. Good night!
