11:00 PM
@Rainbolt don't have the rep :(

@Geobits I think I've finally fixed it - my results are now smaller than in either of the oeis sequences you shared. I've just posted the new code and results if anyone would like to check if anything's wrong again...

Might take a look in a bit. Getting this tournament running now.

@Geobits I'm currently working on improving my team ^^

@Martin I can't figure out why you'd have them timing out so often. It doesn't happen on mine, and despite what the spec says, it waits 1500ms (not 1000) before kicking for time.

it basically always happens at least once by the time I'm at round 3 or so... and by round 50 there's usually only two teams left if any
my PC has been a bit of a mess recently though, so that might play a role (although there's really nothing hogging resources so badly that it should make a difference)

11:12 PM
I want to join the Codemon thing.... but I'm not sure where to start.

Well, there are a few entries now, so you could take a look at them to see how they're handling things. I admit the input/output format is a bit of a mess.
I'm at round 58 now with none timed out.

I've downloaded the controller to run a local tournament.

Hmm, it's very close between the Kid and the Campers.
I'd like to change the tournament to 500 rounds. Do you think anyone would object?
Maybe 1000.

I don't think anyone would object.
It might be needed, actually.

Someone could make a minimax solver that uses the entire second each time

11:27 PM
how do you minimax RPS? or are you talking about Connect 4 now?

I'm going to try to make an evo-team.

If one person used a full second each turn, for 1000 battles (with 20 turns/battle), that would add 5 hours to the time. Unless everybody does it, I'm fine with it. I can start it up before bed and grab results after work. That's a good 18 hours to run.

haha, this is ridiculous... I just tested my modified bot against the campers. after round 50 it stood 82:18 (for my bots)... the campers surpassed my team in round 99 and ultimately won with 98:102

He's doing something with history data it seems, but I haven't looked to see exactly what.

There's a reason to use more rounds then

11:35 PM
You would also want to adjust how the bonus points are handed out. Once every 20 rounds if there are 1000 rounds.

Yea, 500 bonus points would be insane :D

I want to see that.

------- Final Results -------

158 Happy3Campers
157 LittleKid
71 InsideYourHead
68 HardenedTrio
46 BitterRivals
sigh

That is why you want more rounds. 158 vs 157 means nothing.

Right, I'm saying that in my pending edit ;)

11:41 PM
Well I know what I'm doing next week now draws up a list of possible strategies and counter-strategies for each one

Also, you might want to "cycle" byes, if you aren't already doing that. (instead of randomly picking who gets the bye)

Wow...

Wait... they truncated it :(

hm I don't understand how the changes I make to my bot affect my score :/ ... and I don't think I can be bothered right now to wade through the individual game protocols
maybe on the weekend

11:53 PM
No need to read the spec - just GA it ;)

Hmm, well, 100 rounds for 5 bots takes me about 4-5 minutes. 5 mins/generation.... it might take a while for a GA to find something interesting.

@trichoplax no I do understand the spec... but the dynamics of the game are a lot more complicated than knowing the rules

Or rewrite all the other bots in C++ :)

lol

11:56 PM
This is the problem with a lot of game KOTHs
There's no way to practice with humans
So you can't develop a sufficient understanding of the game for coding a bot

I like that about KotHs though - you can see strategy games play out that humans simply can't play

Dinner time!

Enjoy

Why couldn't humans play them?

@feersum well they couldn't play the same number of games, I guess

11:58 PM
I mean in principle you can make a game that very few humans would have the patience to play for long enough to be meaningful

If the game isn't pure chaos, a human can usually beat a naively calcuclating bot with a few hours of training

I have a KotH idea that will be a very simple board game but require 1000s of turns for a single game.
