Let's not forget the fourteen nonsense from yesterday

@Mego ?

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam There was a question that was (paraphrased) "why do I see the number fourteen everywhere"

Anonymous
It was promptly closed, deleted, and Roomba'd

12:04 AM
Roomba'd?

@FlagAsSpam I think the answer to that is no

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam The worst part is, they spelled it wrong

They consider no?

Oh sorry, I thought you said "if they consider what they post"

Anonymous
@AlexA. "what" is only a synonym for "if" in Britain

12:11 AM
Is that true?

Anonymous
It's true wot you're in Britain

@Mego If?

Hey, @Dennis, you're a mathy chap.

Q: Prime Concatenation Order

Alex A.Consider the following procedure. Given an integer $n \geq 2$, obtain the canonical prime factorization of $n$, i.e. $\prod_{i=1}^k p_i^{e_i}$. Take the distinct factors $p_i$ and list them in ascending order. Concatenate them into a new integer. That is, 2 and 5 becomes 25, 3 and 7 becomes 37, ...

halp?

@AlexA. Actually, yes, though not in standard english.

On an unrelated note, does anybody know of a clever (read: golfy) way to map [0,1] => [-1,1]? ([1,0] => [-1,1] also works)

Anonymous
@FlagAsSpam Hence why I specified Britain :P

@Mego Elementwise subtraction of the reverse
Whether that's golfy depends on the language

Anonymous
It's Seriously, so it sort of is

@Mego 2*x − 1?... I must be missing something?

Can I only wear one hat at a time?

Yes
Unfortunately

That’s disappointing, seeing as my avatar has three “heads” :)

Haha
What is your avatar?
I find it aesthetically pleasing.

12:20 AM
It symbolizes a binary tree
Thank you :)

Oh, okay

@AlexA. Looks difficult.

To me, the binary tree is incredibly amenable to abstractification, and I love abstract thinking, so the binary tree is my favourite data structure, to the point that a lot of real-life (non-programming) things sometimes feel like binary trees to me (or like they should be binary trees). </crazy madman rambling>

@Dennis I think so but that's because I don't know shit. In what respect do you find it difficult?
@Timwi backs away from the crazy madman
That's really interesting :)

How about you, do you have some sort of special connection to magpies? (I hope that’s a magpie and I’m not embarrassing myself massively.)

12:23 AM
It's a magpie
I admire them for their intelligence (which is thought to be among the highest in the animal kingdom), their beautiful colors, and I think they're just generally neat. We don't have them in the US but we have crows, which I'm told are from the same family.
And I particularly enjoy the painting of a magpie that I've used for my avatar

@AlexA. That’s really cool! :) I love magpies and crows too (and yes, they’re both corvids). I’m impressed with their problem-solving capabilities too, but in this regard I think I’m most impressed with the kea, which is a species of parrot.

"kea investigating tourists"

@AlexA. The part where you ask if this process guaranteed to halt. :P

haha

How often are hats awarded?

12:34 AM
I have absolutely no idea

@Dennis They’re listed on winterbash2015.stackexchange.com

The Carl Frederickson hat would look awesome on your avatar, @Dennis. :P

Dammit, looks like my comment got deleted before I got the hat...

what is a good place to download gcc for OSX?

It should already have it

12:36 AM
really?

Yeah
which gcc

what it already has is a "gcc" command that calls clang.

@feersum ಠ_ಠ

Heh, yeah, I've notice that running gcc does call clang...
Is that a problem?

Yes, because I want to use gcc.
Not clang.

12:39 AM
brew install gcc49 or something like that
It'll be gccXX where XX is the version number X.X

Should I already have brew?

@Dennis WHAT
gcc=clang on OSX?

@feersum No, go to brew.sh.

@AlexA. fink is better

12:43 AM
That is false

starts holy war over package managers
MacPorts is also better

Every time you guys say “clang”, I hear in my head the metallic sound of a spanner getting stuck in some cogs

@quartata It really, really isn't.

@AlexA. Why

MacPorts pollutes your directories. Homebrew is self-contained.

12:46 AM
That's why you put it in /opt

@quartata That's what I've been told. I don't use OS X.

@Dennis That's terrible. I'm so happy I don't use it anymore.

> It has been this way for a long time already. The "GCC" that came with 10.8 was really GCC front-end with LLVM back-end.

I have to rewrite my entire algorithm because I'm reading two values at a time instead of one because SEGA IS STOOPID

@phase I have to agree. Sega is really stupid. Have you considered ROM hacking a sane game, like Super Mario World?

12:47 AM
@quartata I don't really see why it matters or why it would be a reason not to use OS X.

@AlexA. Because they're lying to you.
GCC and Clang are very different.
And yet they tell you that they are the same.

@quartata everyone's already done that tho

That's not nice.
@phase No one has made a 3D version of SMW even though it is possible using DSP1

It's a GCC frontend. Idk, seems fine to me.

@AlexA. dafuq no it isn't.
It uses LLVM

12:48 AM
@quartata yeah no that's a no no

> It has been this way for a long time already. The "GCC" that came with 10.8 was really GCC front-end with LLVM back-end.

Don't... even...
@phase I may or may not have tried to do this several years ago.

I have to ask an American here. It's a recurring theme in movies and TV series that people want to avoid Jury Duty. Why is that? What's so horrible about this?

@mınxomaτ borrrring

@mınxomaτ You have to take off work for it and ^

Hey, openSUSE has Safari. ಠ_ಠ

openSUSE? I haven't heard that since '08.

@mınxomaτ ?
It's still alive.
Just because Torvalds doesn't use it anymore doesn't mean it isn't alive.

12:52 AM
I don't know a single person who uses openSUSE.

Torvalds is using GNOME 3 now IIRC, so he's wrong anyway.

@Dennis Yep.

@mınxomaτ You know me, sort of.

He says it doesn't suck anymore
lies (mostly)

Torvalds is an asshole anyway.

12:52 AM
@mınxomaτ Wow. Banned.
Don't even go there.

Even he says so.

Right. He gets to say so. You don't.

@NewMainPosts Hello. I want to hammer you closed as too broad or unclear. Take your pick.
@Dennis What do you think?

1:05 AM
Unclear.

Any objection to wielding my hammer of justice?

Oh, it's a popcon. Too broad then.
Wield ahead.

Who is "New Main Posts"?

Anonymous
@Cyoce The worst golfer on the site

Anonymous
@Timwi Thanks for your suggestion; that's much shorter

1:08 AM
@Cyoce It's a feed bot whose sole purpose is to post to chat whenever something is posted on the main site.

@Cyoce It's a feed that posts the new questions on the main site here, approximately one eternity after they have been posted there.
Stupid lag.

~1 eternity

> Note: This is no real hard criteria. Your score is basically how cool and like the post you make the text (and probably what easter eggs you include).
So much ಠ_ಠ

Anonymous
Why did it get upvotes?

Popcons are popular.

1:09 AM
Because people liked the idea? I kinda liked the idea myself.

Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL?

@AlexA. And what exactly do you disapprove of?

@feersum I assume you installed Homebrew first? :P Idk I think it can take a while sometimes but then again I haven't tried installing GCC using it.
@Timwi MLP. :P

@AlexA. And why are you telling me that?

@Timwi Fair question. I don't know. Because you referenced it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anonymous
@feersum No that sounds normal

@Cyoce ???

Whenever someone would type something in chat, I would paste it into cleverbot, and then type what cleverbot said into chat

@AlexA. Why shouldn’t I reference it in a post that refers to ponifying? :)

1:18 AM
@Timwi I never said you shouldn't. You should do whatever your heart desires.

@El'endiaStarman This is both really cool and somewhat spooky

@Cyoce Surprisingly indistinguishable from the usual chat noise.

You know, unless it's like running over puppies or something.

@quartata Particularly the semi-rigidness of when people do stuff.

But I have a feeling that isn't a priority for you. :P

@AlexA. Thank you :)
@AlexA. What about running over schoolkids with my car? (After robbing liquor stores and selling crack)

@Cyoce Wow, I had no idea. I thought you were just spouting off random comments for the lulz.

@Dennis I bet if we made a room with a bot that posted everything that got starred in the Nineteenth Byte and Cleverbot's response to it no one would be able to tell the difference

@Timwi This is acceptable.
