For RPG.SE. Thoughts?

excellent idea, not sure if the image is an obvious enough reference to the labyrinth story rather than the mythical creature that's in it
this one makes the "dungeon crawling" part a bit more obvious

@Ixrec That's a good idea, the labyrinth should be a bit more obvious.

I think something like fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2009/354/5/a/… would be perfect if it wasn't a modern deviantart post
this one has the maze and the fight but it looks a bit silly tbh

This one is has too much details, I don't think it will look good in 220x250
On the plus side, it's closer to RPG.SE's colors.

Q: Is the current number of questions per day sufficient?

naltiparThis is the first Stack Exchange offering I've committed to since its start and I've noticed it had a large amount of content initially, counting over 27 questions per day, but by taking a look in the respective Area 51 Page, we (as of now) have 6 questions per day. Is this a drawback or is it ty...

Q: How can I subscribe to the weekly newsletter?

YannisOn Meta Stack Exchange, it is suggested that I can subscribe to a site's weekly newsletter from the User Edit Page. However, I couldn't find such an option on the new profile page that was rolled out recently. Furthermore, Mythology is missing from the newsletters page on stackexchange.com. How...

Thought I'll try this for Arqade.SE community promo ad

gonna be very hard to beat that picture =)

left to right, Hades, Zeus, Poseidon from the GoW series
@Ixrec :D Still haven't come up with a caption though. Any ideas?

nope, I suck at marketing

me too :P
I guess we'll have to wait for the bright and catchy captions :)
meanwhile, I'll try making up some other ads for other Stacks

gonna be tricky to find good "targets" outside of the pop culture-y ones

4:26 PM
hmm .. yeah

actually, do we have one for History.SE?

Umm ... I'm not sure

oh right, beta, nvm
the one time beta status actually means something

Well, Chemistry graduated recently
Hmm, so many graduated sites. Community promo ads will be challenging to make for each Stack

we could try to make a "generic" one that doesn't depend on the target site in any way
but I get the impression that normally relies on a site's logo, which we obviously don't have yet

4:34 PM
Like the Area51-ish one?

maybe

Sounds easy. But it'll give off a casual vibe.

5:38 PM
@EroSɘnnin We won't be doing one for each graduate sites, only for the ones with topics somehow related to mythology. If we post one on Chemistry, for example, I'm pretty sure it will be removed by their mods or SE staff.
Here's a recent(ish) example of an ad removed from ProgSE's community ads thread: i.stack.imgur.com/RCpGj.png (even though it could be argued that programmers are machines that turn coffee to code)

@Yannis Yeah I'm aware of that. But the concept of linking our SE to another through promo ads is a challenge :P
@Yannis Lol. What was the reason for that delete?

@fredley The community-driven advertisements/bulletins have to be at least roughly aligned with the topic of the community. This advertisement is not appropriate for Programmers SE. — Robert Cartaino ♦ Feb 17 at 14:57

They do have a more programming oriented ad, but their crowd didn't seem to like it much: meta.coffee.stackexchange.com/a/1114

Another day, another interesting question from @HDE226868...

5:51 PM
@Yannis Sarcasm? Though I do hope this one's easier.

@HDE226868 Did that come out as sarcasm? It wasn't, I do enjoy your questions a lot.

I do too ^_^

@Yannis Sorry, that's me. I was feeling a bit irked after getting blocked from arXiv earlier while trying to get to a pre-print I really, really, really needed to see.
Apparently, their system thinks I'm a robot. :-(

Solution = access fewer pdfs over a given period of time, but still. . .

5:56 PM
if it helps, the new SE captcha always thinks I'm a robot and makes me do the image test in addition to the checkmark

I hate the captcha test

@Ixrec Really? Both?

I always either refresh the page
or use another browser

yep, somehow I almost always fail the checkmark
on the plus side, the images they're using seem much less ambiguous than the recaptchas I'm used to, so I still find it easier to get through these consistently than the old ones

@El'endiaStarman I didn't want to put this in the comments, but you're right. I was on the fence about the frost bird question because we took the OP at his word that he had done research, which was why I felt this a similar case. But neither should be acceptable., so vote to close and downvote for the demon one.

@HDE226868 Yeah, by my logic, the frost bird should probably be closed...
But it got an answer! Well, two answers.
I'm a little conflicted about that one. In the future (near or far), I'd probably put a historical lock on it.

I was the second one to vote to close this question, for various reasons:

1. What does it mean to `consume` a life?
2. What type of demon?
3. What type of curse?
4. Are they looking for a specific demon? Or do they just want an example?

just to be thorough, that question was also a cross-post: scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/90030/… (and is on hold over there too)
I remember seeing it on SciFi and immediately thinking "I hope they don't migrate that here..."

@Ixrec Darn you SciFi! You brought this upon us!

I added a note on both sites about the cross-posting. Thanks, @Ixrec. Nice noticing.

7:10 PM
I just saw, and upvoted your comment on scifi
it does look like they made the classic mistake of commenting "actually there's this other site..." before pointing out the broadness problem that'd get it closed on any SE

I love this riposte:
In that case we're all cursed aren't we? — Robert Longson 3 mins ago

speaking of bad questions, PSE just got "Do i need to learn this to be good programmer?"
brb

I'll be watching Worldbuilding to see what happens. I'm not sure what the reaction will be. David's right on one bit, certainly - a lot more will be needed for it to be okay there.
Ack! He used two separate accounts!

@Ixrec Wow, that one was deleted fast. Within 2 minutes.

"voluntarily removed by its author" phew, it's always nice when they do that for us

Q: Demon who can consume your life through a curse

demon-curiosityIs there a demon in whatever culture/epoch/myth who can consume your life in some time through a curse? With "consume your life" I intentionally leave it unclear, because it is not really important. You get the curse... some time... you die. No matter how.

Drat! Just 24 more rep and I could downvote it!

I love how he clarified the one part that needed the least clarification

@El'endiaStarman Saw it. I'm going to drop a few comments, and vtc.

this is a funny case, where will he go next?

What amuses me the most is that it's Mythology people that are chasing this guy. :P

7:15 PM
the scifi comments recommended both us and WB, so unless people leave more ill-advised comments he should stop with this one
though getting closed on three separate sites because of a misguided comment on SciFi is kind of a dick move so we might want to invite him to chat to clean up the question or something
oh cool I have 10k network rep now

@El'endiaStarman Downvoted and voted to close on Worldbuilding.
People on other sites are notoriously unreliable guides to whether something is on topic somewhere else. — Robert Longson 1 min ago

also HDE is a WB guy too (I think)

@Ixrec Yep. For about 7 months, and doing well.

7:30 PM
after a stupid amount of meta searching I think it's impossible for me to get this guy into a chat even if I convince him to register an account
so I guess there's nothing left to do

@Ixrec Mods can stick him into chat.

yeah, so it comes down to whether a mod thinks it's worth his time to help the guy clean up that mess and write a better question, still nothing I can do

Yeah. I personally don't really think he can be helped all that much. He copy-pasted his question to different sites without doing ANY investigation into the site itself.

While many users commented that he should be more specific.
with a response "I intentionally leave it unclear"

Nice!

I've seen it quite a few times already, though not on MLP:FiM questions...

Exactly, we've made to MLP:FIM questions. What greater honor is there?

clearly we should've made a unicorn-themed ad

As luck would have it, I just posted one with a unicorn on it. Well, a little bit of a unicorn.

@femtoRgon O_O horrors spring to mind...
