The chapter version lines up everything but the suffixes.

Plus, it looks nice if I zoom in :-)

Maybe I didn't notice it at first because I had no idea what I'm looking at.

Anonymous
Yeah, sorry, I had to take the time to make the images to illustrate what I meant.

11:04 PM
Yeah, they're called.... interlinear glosses?

Anonymous
Yeah!

But they're meant to align each gloss to the start of each word as per that second image.

Anonymous
Rule #1.

@snailboat This does look like it was done with TeX.

Anonymous
11:05 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yay!

Yeah.
It's just that the second person actually knew what they were doing.
But that looks like Computer Modern to me.

@snailboat This one's font is the default font for TeX, so it could be TeX. If it is, though, that means the code is uglier than mine.

Well, Shibatani is an esteemed linguist, but I think the paper benefited from whatever process it went through when it was published as a chapter.

I suspect they did some tabular trickery for the 2nd
Actually, there's a package for glosses.
(Because of course there is)

Anonymous
It'd be nice if Stack Exchange had support for glosses.

Anonymous
11:08 PM
We have several sites where it'd be useful.

@jimsug You can never know what trickery is involved if trickery is involved.
It's so versatile.

Anonymous
But tables are unsupported by design.

@snailboat Yeah, I've had to resort to using code blocks to align glosses. Ugh.

Anonymous
@jimsug That didn't work on Japanese.SE for years because the fonts didn't line up.

Anonymous
It seemed like spaces and Latin letters were pulled from one font, Japanese from another.

Anonymous
11:09 PM
We've got a hack in now to change the font on code blocks. (On Stack Exchange, all <pre> blocks created with Markdown are also <code> blocks.)

@jimsug I've mostly given up on Markdown. I do tables in Word and snip them off the screen and put in the image.

Anonymous
@StoneyB That's definitely more flexible!

Anonymous
I don't have Word.

Anonymous
But I know it can do stuff.

And things.

Anonymous
11:10 PM
Stuff and things. The whole package.

@StoneyB You should totally drop word and use query, I ,mean erm, LaTeX.

Or whatever you use for WP. Or a spreadsheet.

Anonymous
When I was young, I used LyX.

Anonymous
Excuse me, younger.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Life's too short. I went from WordStar to WordPerfect to Word; enough is enough.

11:12 PM
@snailboat When I was young, I used runoff.

@StoneyB You have no idea how many times I've observed Word bowing down to the superiority of LaTeX. I don't either.
But it's a positive integer, I can assure you.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I gave a not-so-great answer about quotes the other day on Japanese.SE, and it resulted in some confusion:

Q: How can I produce Japanese quotation marks?

seijitsuHow can I produce the sort of Japanese quotation marks shown on this book page? I tried ″英語″ but in documents on my computer (Microsoft Word, plain text) it comes out looking like this screenshot: where 1) both marks are in the same direction rather than pointing in toward each other and catt...

Thank you Windows. System restore successfully managed to waste an hour of my time.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Fersher. But fact is, 99.5% of my effort goes into getting the actual words right; I'd just as soon turn ASCII files over to a Real Typographer.

When they copied and pasted into Word, they got this:

Anonymous
But it was supposed to look like 「〝札幌市民学園〟に対するぼくの構想」……

@snailboat I've learned making any contact with SE editor and Word directly is fatal.

Anonymous
The double minutes ended up weird and asymmetrical.

Word inserts some invisible chars you can't work with in SE's editor.
SE's editor does bad things when you type certain chars in it.

I tend to write everything in Vim.

It's just habit. I've got so much muscle memory tied up in it I don't feel like learning anything else, generally speaking.

That's style! Thumbs up

I don't mean to suggest that anyone else should do what I do. Although there are certainly other people that do. :-)

Q: "Is honey better than sugar, and if it is what the reason" - CORRECT?

Dory I would like to know if this sentence is clear, correct and sounds as native speaker sentence (I'm putting the doubtful words- on bold) "Is honey better than sugar, and if it is what the reason"

Can someone go and edit that thing's title?

Not worth the effort -- it's proofreading and will get closed anyway.

Anonymous
11:20 PM
I've said this a couple times already in the last 24 hours, but...

Anonymous
Sometimes a question can't have a specific title because the question itself isn't specific.

I didn't read the question.

Anonymous
In that case, the question itself needs to be improved.

That's about as specific as you can possibly get -- specifically, off-topic.

I just saw it in the feeds.

11:21 PM
(Or closed. Dealt with in some manner.)

@StoneyB We have?

Anonymous
A user by many names.

Anonymous
And more recently, many numbers.

Could you guys stop being so mystical?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Quite recently, if my suspicion is correct, your name.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Just a moment, I haven't finished putting on my Grand Conjurer's robes.

And now the hat―perfect!

(A rakish tilt to the left, perhaps?)

Anonymous
Oh, good eye!

I did costume design, too, a little!

Anonymous
I was on stage crew in school, but I didn't end up doing much besides painting and curtains.

11:29 PM
I'm not very theatrical.

Anonymous
I'm good at wearing funny hats, though.

Christmas is your season, then, on SE.

Anonymous
Wow!

Betcha didn't know we kept the negatives.

11:31 PM
It gives a new meaning to Folies.

@tchrist That calls for some chemistry.
Yippee! Back to square one, after realizing the problem persists in Safe Mode and it must be something with the core of the windows itself.

Just waiting to be made into hats!

Indeed.

11:35 PM
@snailboat Looks like a fossil of transformers.

Hmm ... how do you post images in Chat

@StoneyB upload. You have to have no other chars in the message.
Or just copy the link of the image here.
Shtoopid autocorrect
Oh well, my speed is gonna decrease, and I have to get used to using the mouse more.

Her bust balances the ship?

Well, for ladies challenged fore there's aft balancing, too.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Back before laser mice, I tended to get RSI problems using mice.

... have to go restore the tissues now. 'night, all.

Anonymous
So I got used to doing everything with the keyboard as much as possible.

Anonymous
@StoneyB Rest well!

Anonymous
I have a mouse now which seems to be kinder to my wrist.

Anonymous
But I'm still used to using my keyboard all the time.
