3:54 AM
Good Morning! I'm look for a metaphor which suits this situation. I said using side mirrors of a lorry for his bike is not acceptable. But he says fulfill the requirement somehow is what acceptable. I want to a metaphor which breaks his logic.

In general, analogies are a bad idea for arguments where the two sides are already entrenched.
People tend to pick them apart by pointing out the differences, rather than seeing what is common to the situations.

In general most of the situations I see it goes well in speech; informal way
I want to learn a metaphor which implies this > using wrong equipments to do something

holding my breath...
Hmm... when will the announcement come in UTC?

@dam Let us see for how many secs/minutes can hold it.

@Freddy Hee

Mmm peach.

chocolate! nom, nom...
finger-crossed (on another stuff)...

@DamkerngT. Hmm, good question...

7:16 AM
@DamkerngT. 24-3:30.
@Jim ^

It was about three hours after it closed, for Magenta.

Well it's going to be exactly 00:00:00:000:000:000 when the election end here.
And Iran is GMT + 3:30, so!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I doubt that :P
Computer Science was at 8:06 PM :P

Well they're weird.

Workplace: 9:12PM

7:18 AM
We're weird too, but only in chat.
@Dam @Jim I wonder . . .
I wonder who these bandwagon-ers that suddenly became active have voted for.

Hmm... I haven't checked the badge page yet.

Code Review: 9.18pm
Chem: 8.47pm
Blender: 9.55pm
seems like it's anywhere from 6-240 minutes after the election closes :/
256 awarded.

So I guess it's within 13-17 hours from now.
Hey, that's a nice number!

12-16 hours.
Well, probably 12-15 hours from now.

2^n is always nice. :P

7:23 AM
because minutes, and less than 16 hours.

nods

I suspect I won't have garnered enough votes to make it; I've not been active enough, recently.
Well, except in chat

That would be a shame...

@jimsug Same feeling goes for me, Cat, Nathan and prolly Arau. :P

I reckon Arau has been active enough
Cat, too, based entirely on reputation/time.

7:50 AM
@dam You were going to change Avatar, isn't it?

@Freddy Probably not. It could be interesting, though. :D

@dam bot in your avatar have hands! I did not knew that!

LOL
It always has, and it always says "Hello!".

I thought bot was signaling for six! :p

Hee

7:55 AM

Is that "Hello" too?

@DamkerngT. It's like holding someone in the air.

hee
I was thinking that I should get new handle, something like "frado"<---- that's what my grandma use. But it is very common in other language.
handle should be unique
like kishanio
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

That was just example.
That whenever someone search your HANDLE google should show that particular person.

8:04 AM
I don't see any examples. Gimme an image.

Handle is just like unique userid

8:56 AM
Hmm... Panda... That's cute... :P

Q: Why "or" means "=" in mathematics?

NeilWangI'm reading a Perl documentation. I noticed the expression of "=" is not "equal" but "or". For example: Perl provides the typical ordinary addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operators, and so on. For example: 2 + 3 # 2 plus 3, or 5 5.1 – 2.4 # 5.1 minus 2.4, or 2.7 3 * 12 # 3 ti...

Sometimes our questions are not really about English. It's more about metalanguage.
I wonder if there is any language that the translation of or in "2 + 3 (that is 2 plus 3, or 5)" doesn't work.

I really think it's off-topic
If I created a programming language where = means if, it would not be on-topic
Programming languages are... well, another language. It's not necessarily English
This isn't Perl Language Learners, it's English Language Learners :|

I think the OP is probably more familiar with this kind of math in their classes: "Students (the teacher wrote 2 + 3 on the blackboard), this is 2 plus 3 = 5."
So they tried to force-read that = (in math classes) on that or in Perl's document.
Not sure if the # sign in Perl code was the cause of confusion.

Q: Made by vs made in.What is the difference between them?

user124234Made by vs made in. Examples : This film is made by India. This film is made in India. What is the difference between them?

Hmm... made by India
That's not the same as made by Indian(s)
Does that mean that the Indian government backed the film?

9:27 AM
yeah, it does

3 hours later…
12:10 PM
@DamkerngT. Wah.
@jimsug Trust me, = does not mean or in Perl.

@tchrist :D

It doesn’t even mean equals. It’s the assignment operator.

It's closer to becomes or represents

Just gets.
I guess you could read $a = 7 as set a to 7.

Well, = is a binary operator while or expresses . . . How did they even synonymize them?

12:13 PM
The poster?
No idea.

Eh.

|| means logical or, | means bitwise or.
But = never means or.

After a bit of thought, it's still off-topic.

So confusing the posterboy.
Not that we've never done that before.

It should never have been migrated here from ELU.

12:15 PM

Hmm.
Still needz moar tips.

I would use specific examples from actual titles.
But I guess that's just your list of rules/guidelines.

@jimsug I'm ragging on the migrator about that now.

Have I previously linked this? List of ELL titles

I actually don't think it's a Perl question at all.

It's not.
But it's not an English question, either.

12:18 PM
It's just a dumb I-can't-read-Engritch question.

Not even really that.

Hello Abel, this is Cain, or your murderer.
WHY OR MEAN EQUALS?

The question Why does C# use % as the modulo operator? would not be on-topic on Mathematics

This is about reading an English-language comment.
Badly.

Yeah, you're right. My example is too generous.
The equivalent of my example would be Why does Python use == to mean "equals"?

12:21 PM
sumelic gave an acceptable answer, but for the love of Claude what is with reading comprehension?!

Whereas this is more like Why does Python use == to mean "or"?

Triple-digit₈ IQs are not a prerequisite for posting questions.

And it's gone hot.
Ugh.

FMH

See, I would've rejected that migration.

12:23 PM
@jimsug Protect

I wish I could.

It will autoprotect with two more rep=1 posts.
Because that's what ELL is set to. ELU sadly still is set to 5.

Another vote-to-close can close it.

Does the post need to be >0 score to stay Hot?

Dunno.

12:28 PM
I think it might just be a dodgy Perl textbook, tbh

So to speak.
Been a long time since I've touched it.
I didn't write that line, that I recall.
Then again, this is true of most of what I did write, too.

:3
@tchrist you speak Portuguese, right?

@jimsug Something like that.
Why?

I always wonder about television... how good is Jennifer Morrison's PT?

MAKE IT STOP

12:35 PM
Right.

She is just saying the letters. She is not saying the sounds.

Oh gawd.

She is saying the letters as though they were English words.
Her entire mouth position is wrong. Flappy.

That's interesting. I wonder how that translates to learners of English.
I mean, that wasn't the point of my question - I was just curious - but still.

Listen to Asia.

12:40 PM
I can use both old and current accents of mine.

That’s what Portuguese sounds like.

@tchrist That sounds completely different.
I see what you mean.

@jimsug Exactly!
See the problem?

/me goes to Kung Fu class. Later guys!

I know no Portuguese, and I can tell.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Cya

12:41 PM
That's what either Portuguese or Spanish sounds like to me!
Have fun doing your Kung Fu!

@jimsug That's Portuguese, not Spanish.

@tchrist Yeah, I don't know what happened there... must be getting late.

Notice how "Slavic" it sounds.

nods -- Even though I know that they're not the same language, they still sound pretty much alike to me.

I can usually understand snippets of Spanish.
I did an intro Spanish course. Also I studied French for four years, so that helps a little.

12:43 PM
Notice how different those two languages sound.
They each have sounds you simply don't hear in the other. Also, the Spanish is syllable-timed not stress-timed like the Portuguese.
And the gringa’s mouth couldn’t manage either in a million years.

I guess it will take countless hours for me before I can know the difference by heart.

There is a "th" sound in Spanish that Portuguese normally lacks.
And there is a lot of "zh" sound in Portuguese that you don’t hear much in Spanish.
Like in English pleasure.
Also, Spanish has only five vowels, plus diphthongs.
Portuguese has many, many more vowels, and there is phonemic distinction between oral and nasal vowels.
Portuguese does syllable-reduction like English or French. Spanish does not. That means you only hear at most one stressed syllable per word (and sometimes less), and that you really don't hear much of the other syllables, which are much shorter and with neutralized vowels.

I wish it hadn't been migrated.
I read it from top to bottom: proofreading.
I read it from bottom to the top: proofreading.

It is.
@TCh tell RegDwight to tell others not to migrate crap to ELL.

Sigh.

DON'T MIGRATE CRAP. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

You really should tell him yourself, if you think he needs to hear it.
It was a rough morning on ELU. Crap out the wazzoo.
Go to ELU chat and be helpful not confrontational about it.
He'll be gone for the day pretty soon.
I already whined.

EH?
Well he's sensible sometimes.
I'm pretty sure your reminder is enough.

3:47 PM
ok

So it was a tough day over there.

So much crap, yes.

nods

Read the first page and you'll see.

Believe it or not, my browser crashed when I opened that page!
The election will end soon. I think J.R. (I'm pretty sure that he will be elected once again) and the new mods will discuss the matter sooner or later.

Q: AWOL - what's the potential meaning of it?

Yi TangI found a very difficulty prorblem For example, he's AWOL. What does this means?

Facepalm

See what I mean?
We had a score of those this morning already.

@TCh do you know the meaning of AWOL?

It's the thing you get off a sheep.

I mean, do you know the POTENTIAL meaning?

Only in Cardiff.

3:52 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I guess it's off-topic, even on ELL.

Nobody knows the POTENTIAL meaning.
It's a difficulty problem, whatever that is.

Maybe Kiwivania.

In another language?

Q: Why "that is to say"

the0therThis sounds terribly British. And very wordy. Where did this phrase come from, and is it any different from plain old "say"?

Huh?

It's something terribly British.
Is it some kinda food?

I think it'd make more sense if they tried to relate that is to say to that is, not say.

3:56 PM
Unclear.
I spent my 24 close votes within the first hour or two of getting them. Always do.
Need 50.
Or 100.

Closevotes should scale with reputation like delvotes do.
That might even happen someday.

co-author of Programming Perl and Perl Cookbook from O’Reilly Awesome! @tchrist

Somebody's gotta do it.

we just started the introduction lecture last saturday about Perl

> How does cooked Perl taste like?
@TCh I'm gonna go and ask that on ELU to get on your nerves.

I'm a Java guy. Today one of my friend told Java has fired many senior developers as they have moved most of the work cloud based and automated

I'm a normal guy. Nice to meet you two too. ;)

4:23 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M normal? o.O or you mean abnormal ? :P

I'm so abnormal it's normal.

Poor @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M So misunderstood.

Like folding time on itself like Einstein dreamed of doing.
@Catija Meanwhile, almost 3 hours till the end of ELLection.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I pointed that out in the Election chat room.

. . . in a less elegant way. :P

4:28 PM
@JudeNiroshan If you love Java you'll likely loathe Perl. At least, I can assure you that the reverse condition prevails.

@tchrist I think Perl is more powerful than Java. (Normally i argue that Java is everything; but to be honest this is what i feel)
Do we want some platform to run Perl programs? Like Java need JVM in order to run Java programs; C# need .NET to run programs; JavaScript need a Browser to render; Python need python to be installed. etc ?

In the early years of Java's existence, I maintained no more than a cordial dislike for the language, one borne mainly out of ignorance. I am no longer ignorant, and I am no longer cordial.
@JudeNiroshan You should install perl to run Perl programs, yes.
But all operating systems worthy of the name already have it installed, so this should make no never mind.

ohh. What is the language that you can write and run in any machine without installing anything? like Bash scripts? but still Bash is only in Linux; isn't it? (I tried ls -al and didn't work in Windows machine)

Caveat lector: my background is in OS design, so I have different sensibilities in that regard than most people.

ohh i see

4:40 PM
@JudeNiroshan It's easier if you have a Mac or other Unix box.
There are Windows-native builds of Perl, but the Unix-emulating Cygwin environment from RedHat is richer.

interesting

People comfortable in a Unix shell will want to install Cygwin.

we have ubuntu in our office

That would be easiest for now.

yes. but without root access in a linux; it's a potato

4:51 PM
Why?
You should have no need of root to do anything you need to.
Admittedly, getting a per-user Perl installation is not especially clear to most people who first think about it.
If you want to use it on Windows, you can install precompiled binaries.
This is what some people do for per-user Perl library installations if they want to keep using system perl.

ooook

There are other ways, but they become increasingly complicated. At $job we use plenv and carton but ug.
For my own system, I confess to sudo'ing for installs.
sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Some::Random::Module'
So shoot me.

5:12 PM
my user profile in not listed in sudo list file
therefore; i can't use sudo in my office machine

Alas and alack, laddie.
Not surprised.
But Perl will already be installed.
Only if you want to install CPAN modules will you need to do some local::lib stuff.

Can i say for those who are extremly lazy go to this web link
* For lazy asses, just click here * ???

If you just want to run Perl code, you don't have to do anything special. It's already installed.
If you want to install more modules, that's different.
perl -e 'print "Hello, moon.\n"'
That should work just fine already like.

5:29 PM
i should try this tomorrow when i go to office. By the way tomorrow is our LIVE release of the last sprint we did

We do live releases now after every six-week sprint. My previous job shut down the production line for installations, but we were always on a timer.

wow! 6 weeks? how the time boxes goes? 2 weeks for Development and 2 Weeks for QA and other 2 weeks for Client Acceptance testing?

Talking about software and testing, I wonder why this stack doesn't have more activities than it currently has:

@DamkerngT. hi

I'd have to go check. I know we have a cut-off for QA that's like two weeks early.
The UAT portion is not always as well-defined.

Can i say for those who are extremly lazy go to this web link
* For lazy asses, just click here * ???

Hi! @Jude!
@JudeNiroshan That would depend on the tone you want your site has, but it's probably not a good idea in most cases, imo.

I am just addressing my lazy dudes. I don't want it to be formal manner. Is that english is ok?

@JudeNiroshan You mean English; english is something you do with billiards.
And no, "asses" is not a nice word.

umm.. then what would be the correct one?
just asking as I'm not a native speaker and still trying to learn english

IMHO, I think there is something underlying the sentence, even when it's rephrased with some more polite words (like For lazy folks, you can just click here). It could imply something less than nice to some people. I can't say this for sure since I don't know how it's used on your web page.

5:51 PM
yes. I also thought about word Folks. It better than asses. hehe :D
