08:15
@Aravona: :)
08:43
Monring
Right Mr Weather, where is my fricken snow
:(
@Liam aww no snow?! We've seen none yet either... Just some frost...
And it's properly hard to run atm, I went arse over tits last night as I turned to double back on myself lol
Snow would be lovely .
We've had some but melted again after ~ 3 hours
09:00
Arse over tits :D :D :D I've never heard that
@Aravona It's pretty warm up here
and rainey
I haven't seen a frost this year yet
@Liam yeah same, 10C most evenings.
@WedaPashi lol! Just means I fell over.
09:24
@Aravona: LOL :D But, did you get hurt? Hope you didn't.
09:39
Got my Kendo grid working, yay!
@WedaPashi nah, I'm fine, just was a bit of a shock lol... Oh btw the workout challenges I started are actually working... I could barely do 5 sit ups before, I can now do 25 before being knackered :)
@Aravona Awesome
@Liam I know that's not much but tbh I'm just impressed I've not given in lol!
December chocolates, treats... Booze... It's a hard month to stay healthy in.
10:01
Morning all. Monring Liam.
@RoryAlsop morning!
10:52
@Aravona: Awesome.
Morning @Rory
Hello @imsodin
11:11
@Aravona: I have started early morning workouts. 5 km run/jog, 3 Sets of crunches, 10-10-15. Thats 2 days a week. 3 km run, 5 km cycling and 200 skipjumps, thats again 2 days a week. On weekends I trek/hike/climb(Very less often now) and I get up late on Mondays :)
Started a month ago.
Thats me after loosing 5 kg.
3
@WedaPashi Is this in prep for the wedding?!
11:28
@WedaPashi that's bloody impressive! The recent storm has made running hard, but I was doing nearly 2k runs three times a week... Now due to poor conditions I'm doing 1km as often as I can...
I've lost a stone since I got my fitbit, which is when I started running and improving my diet too.
Crunches are a killer though. Lol I'm not a fan... But I'm still doing them!
Morning
@nivag howdy :)
morning

1 hour later…
12:53
@Liam: Haha, nope. I've always been a fitness keen.
Morning @Nivag
@Aravona: Thanks, hope you get to do your stuff the way you want to :)
@WedaPashi same goes :)
13:20
@Aravona: Thanks :)
@Aravona: Hows the day going?
13:40
@WedaPashi not terribly... But trying to find out why my session isn't working...
Yours?

Q: Enough with the flood of artificial questions!

Olin LathropWe've had a single user for a while now (a few weeks?) flooding the site with questions. These are largely about a single topic. I agree that archery is on topic here, and if these are truly questions about things he doesn't know and wants to find out, then I can live with this. However, that'...

Miserable sod....
@Liam As a side note: I don't think naming OddDeer is a problem, it is anyway clear who he is talking about and in such a case, I think it is even more polite to use his name instead of a obvious pseudonym like "someone".
@imsodin the whole tone annoyed me TBH. That was just something I picked up on. If no one beats me to it I'll write an answer later.
@Liam Write one anyway. I totally agree on the tone, it is very negative. If it was phrased politely, I think it is a very valid and needed discussion. I can see that people feel alike. It is indeed a overwhelming flood (3-5x more questions than before) of mostly artificial questions on a narrow topic. I think this is not a problem and the benefits absolutely outweigh the downside, but that is debatable. Lets see whats gonna happen...
Damn, I just wanted to make the argument that most traffic comes from google so all this similar questions on our front page is a non-issue. But I couldn't get the archery questions to turn up on google...
14:10
@Liam: We can ask Olin to get into chat/
What does @Rory think about it?
@Liam I think you were nicer than me on that meta question...
Personally I've nothing against seeding, but I did say it could be spread out a bit.
If the issue is simply the topic looks like BAD QUESTIONS then perhaps the regular archers can discuss and tidy it up.
@Aravona Trying to be balanced. Shouting doesn't help anyone...even if I do want to say..."other"....things
@Liam I agree. But it does to me bottle down to... If it's not of interest, why are you bothering to read it?!
I do understand that it looks like spam... But it's probably going to phase out, and we're a damn site closer to the 10 questions than we were. In the long run, the questions will get lost to the depths of the website, and it'll no longer be an issue.
Plus. This website is about rep, let the votes on his questions do the talking
14:27
@Aravona I personally think it's encouraged users, I've seen several new ones appear
@Liam yes agreed and I said as much...
In regards to my comment on your post - I actually think the mass load of climbing questions we had lead to us discussing seeding more topics..
This just seems a very silly conversation to be having.
@Aravona TBF, if you look at the meta on SO they have these all the time
@Liam really?! But that sort of makes sense for a sitr with over 10mil questions... We've like 2000...
We're not in a position to bitch about an extra 40 or so questions in the last month.
Indeed his last few, because ultimately this was a bitch at a singular person, have not been about archery.
I've let this get my hackles up too. Damnit.
Fishing has recieved a lot of interest now too... No one's commented on that
@WedaPashi smooth... And personal... Answer mate.
14:42
@Aravona: I've had always respect for that guy. And I still do.
Stupid app won't let me access the question I just asked!
Oh now it is... I do in fact know the answer but I'm not self answering currently...

Q: Are Hawthorn berries edible?

AravonaBeing a bright red berry the old saying about avoiding red berries sticks to mind but I do remember reading that Hawthorn berries, or Haws, are edible... Is this true? Is there a seed to watch out for in the Haw, or are they like a raspberry / blackberry?

Thats what I think.
And @OddDev: Though I said I have no interest in Archery, this doesn't change what I think about you as a user. You are a valuable addition to the community. Keep up the great work.
No problem mate :)
@OddDev: :)
I really tried to have other topics than archery in my questions...
In my "top 5" is one single archery question?!
14:53
@OddDev yeah... Don't worry about it too much... You have spammed the website with questions, but as I said they'll get more spread out the more users we have.
I think it's better to get 2-3 questions from one user to go back to 4-5days between questions...
Not a bad answer to my question about Haws but... Didn't answer it fully.
Also I have seriously noticed of late less upvotes on questions and just upvoted answers... Usually if I answer a question I vote it up too
Might just be me lol
Oh you already have.
@OddDev Between you and me, the meta asked her has a habit of every now and then complaining about x,y or z
Sorry didn't check before posting.
@Liam Oh okay :)
However, I like you guys and if something is annoying etc. just say it and I'll stop.
2
@OddDev: Nope. (Personal opinion)
15:00
@OddDev that's really mature. I think perhaps just spread it out a little... But otherwise don't worry... Oh and it's worth taking the time to look at old questions too! That's always fun. Give rep where it's deserved :)
My opinion: @Olin go for it, do seed your topic. If this turns into a competition between "TGO fractions", we might soon be at 20questions/day :P
3
@imsodin: #Optimism :)
@imsodin hahaha hell yeah.
The Great Outdoors is bloody massive, it's the majority of the world. Outdoors.SE can be just as bloody big.
Bah-humbug.
This is Hogswatch! It's supposed to be jolly, with mistletoe and holly, and--and other things ending in olly! It's a time when people want to feel good about things and eat until they explode!"
So, no more bickering :)
And I hardly understood what you said @Aravona :(
@WedaPashi it's a quote from the Hogfather, when Susan yells at Death for ruining Hogswatch(Christmas).... Basically this is a happy merry eat until you pop time of year and we shouldn't waste time on silly disagrements over question topics :)
15:13
@Aravona: Understood and Agreed :) Thanks.
I learn in chat :)
@Escoce can you answer my question in full? I'd love to accept your answer but it's partial...
@OddDev my husband, @Dynadin just told me an excellent point regarding this issue... The fault is NOT yours. Dyna is an archer and even HE is a bit bored of all the archery questions
Does he blame you? Nope! He said it's everyone elses fault for not asking questions lol!
And actually that's really really true.
:D Yeah, that's right. I even would love to see Olin go for his 10 questions/day...
@OddDev haha... We all want to graduate! I'm trying to come up with some more foraging questions, but I don't want to be too broad (and obviously I'm UK specific mostly)
15:39
I've just earned the "Tumbleweed" badge :D I didn't even know it existed
Nice :)
@Escoce awesome thanks for the edit. I'm pretty sure they contain cyanide though... Might be worth mentioning too? :)
@OddDev the way I would approach it is to continue asking questions. The questions are good, but give folks a chance to answer them. Wait a few days to allow some people to answer them and then if you don't think any good answers have arisen then put your answer there. Otherwise you haven't given anyone a chance to interact and it becomes spam.
And this is meant as constructive advice only
@Aravona well you realize the pits and seeds of most fruit contain arsenic and cyanide.
@Escoce yup. I actually knew the answer to my question.
@Escoce Thanks for your input :)
I am planning on asking some sailing questions, because quite honestly I love sailing and interacting with sailors and asking and answering stuff. I'd like to see sailing or perhaps boating in general become its own community, but that's down the road I think :-)
15:49
@Escoce it's been rejected once or twice as it's own community
@Escoce Please ask them :) Looking forward reading them
Is "looking forward reading them" right? I feel like it has to be "Look forward to read them" but sounds wrong either :D
*Looking forward to read them
@Aravona there, I added a bit about the seed toxicity.
@Escoce that's a really good detailed answer. Thanks :) just what was needed.
@Aravona it may have been rejected, but it's really not so
Much a subset of outdoorsmanship. The two communities in general have very little to do with one another. Outdoorsmanship usually focuses on land based activities, where as boating and sailing rarely have anything to do with camping, hiking, hunting, etc etc.
@Escoce hmm not so true. A lot of people camp / canoe or camp and kayak.... Or dingies, I've a friend who sails to islands then camps. There is definite overlap... Enough that sailing hasn't made it to beta yet.
There is one currently, but it's been there for 3 months and hasn't gotten much support :)
16:10
Canoeing and kayaking yes that's true, but interestingly enough as someone who does both small man powered craft as well as larger engine power or sail powered boating, even those seem to be somewhat divided. I would include kayaking and canoeing as outdoorsmanship and sailing and power boating as seamanship...I don't belive I would be the only one either
And I am just sharing opinion here, not trying to force that on anyone
How do I find beta communities?
Actually, that's would be a great name for the community. Seamanship
16:27
@Rory: Fantastic!
2
A: Enough with the flood of artificial questions!

Rory AlsopI didn't want to pop my opinion on until key contributors from the community had had a chance to, in case I skewed things, but I have to say I am in agreement that OddDeer adding a good stack of questions every day is a good thing. One of the things I can see as a mod is how his actions affect v...

Thanks for considering us as key members :)
16:39
@WedaPashi I think he was talking about me and @Aravona ;)
Joke ^ :)
Oh shoot
17:00
@Escoce that's true, hence me saying there is overlap
:)
17:25
Hello everyone
@Captain hi
Hows you?
Just in time for me to be leaving unfortunately
M fine Liam. Have a nice time ahead
18:17
@RoryAlsop this Meta issue is a little out of hand...
19:17
^^
17 days and already crushed to community -.-
People hate me
*must
@OddDev no - one person has become a bit annoyed. And while I hate to say it, some individuals are a bit grumpy about things...
don't take it personally - the stats show you are having a good effect on the site - the best way to fix Olin's annoyance is for us all to post that many questions a day :-)
:D Okay
@RoryAlsop I totally agree. And Olin has only asked 4 questions.
Seems to me he's just annoyed he can't answer any of your topics...
Go go go^^
@OddDev I'm trying but tbh I'm beginning to get stumped. I did like your true north question though!
19:27
Thanks :)
I often just google a few things and read trough some articles to get a sudden inspiration
@OddDev awesome, usually I wait until something happens... That's how we got a question about vomit on tents...
19:48
Hmm the only issue atm is our answer rate has dropped... New questions are good but more answers per question would be neat too
It's taken ages to get up to 2.5, now on 2.4... Might be time to dig through the old questions...
20:21
@Escoce - good to see another sailor. I keep hoping I'll come up with questions as I'm teaching my kids how to sail, snowboard, surf etc but I'm not being good at asking
@RoryAlsop Dad used to always sail into the harbour, and people were amazed because a lot of people come in on the motor. I never got to see his yacht, but sailing fascinates me.
I blame my sister... it was her or the boat. I'd much rather have had a Big Boat to a Big Sister!
20:46
Luckily Orkney is very much a sailing community, so I ended up teaching sailing
@RoryAlsop well I am working getting some traffic to the beta site

2 hours later…
23:12
@RoryAlsop what do you teach?
