Morning
found a spooky dead sheep on my walk last night
was just outside of a natural cave
Hey @jon
welcome to the chat room
.....that only contains me at the moment....?!
:D
Jon
Jon
08:46
hello and good morning!
too early for most people :)
hm - well now I realize that it is already 11 am.
@Liam:
btw, where do you know from that you found a dead sheep in the cave?
@Jon It is normally a little busier. Tends to go up and down.
@Jon I'm not sure I follow?
@Liam creepy sheepy.
@Aravona ha ha
@Jon Liam lives in sheep country, you get used to their skeletons aftee a while.
@Aravona baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
08:54
@Liam I remember when we went on a team building week in Wales, we were abseiling and there was a dead sheep at the bottom.
@Aravona You see quite a lot in snowdonia, especially after that bad winter the other year.
Saw some wild pony foals the other day, they were cute
@Liam aww! We saw loads of sheep on our climb... my other half and I have this joke that there is always a Sheep higher up than you on Snowdon.
09:11
@Liam @Ara: Hellow Guys!
@WedaPashi Hey Weda
@Liam: How do ya know that its a sheep? :P
@WedaPashi Couldn't be anything else that size by us
@WedaPashi It was also in field full of sheep....
:P
@Liam: Hahaha.. So obvious :D
@WedaPashi You see a lot where I live. The farmers sometimes don't notice them and the birds/foxes pick the carcass clean. By the time the farmer see's it there's nothing to remove.
09:15
@liam: Glad that Everton could seal the deal for Samuel Eto'o?
There was a dead lamb foetus in the same field.
@Liam it's part of the fun of Wales :)
@WedaPashi Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that. Lukaku is the important signing this season
Jon
Jon
Oh, yeah - that makes sense with so many sheeps around.
I never have seen a sheep skeleton in real life.
@liam: Ohk
@Jon: Well, @liam has just helped you with that.
09:17
@Jon Wales is famous for it's sheep. Leads to some not very polite names! ha ha
@liam: Liverpool lost their fixture with City. And I hate that!
@Ara: Do you follow Premier League?
@Liam ... and some hilarious inflatables.
@WedaPashi The manu result was the biggest shock. 4-0 to MK dons!!!
@Weda ... football? To be polite it's not my sport no.
@Liam: Manu result? What game are you talking abt?
09:20
@WedaPashi League cup?!
@Ara: Ohk. We'll make sure that you get into it when @Ara, @Dyn, @Liam and I meet :D
@Weda sorry both Dyna and I will mever get into it, we both hate it... lol
United were mauled by an energetic and clinical performance from the side two divisions below them,
Never*
09:22
@Aravona I can take it or leave it
I used to have a season ticket at Everton
@Liam I don't understand why men like watching men run around in shorts and cry when they miss a goal. I've never been into a sport enough to get upset about losing. If you lose you lose, the other side or other people clearly did better on the day lol... the only sport I will watch on tv is three day eventing.
@Aravona I think you may be missing the point! Everyone should visit a football match once. I bet you'd enjoy it!
Plus no sportsman should earn more money than doctors, policemen, nurses, firemen, paramedics etc etc. Seems fruitless.
@Liam hmm no, I don't like football, it's boring lol. No one dies or gets injured. Three day eventing is much more interesting.
@Aravona You'd like Rugby!
@Aravona Yep, 100% agree
@ara: Ok. I loose, you win :-)
hush, No football talks here. The Queen doesn't like it :-)
@Liam I do like rugby yes lol. But I still don't really watch it, unless there is really nothing else on. Unless it's Badminton Trials or HOTY or Olympia or the Olympics I barely even watch 3DE
I actually mostly watch documentaries on tv nowadays... lol, I try not to be in enough to watch TV lol!
Minor football rant over.... lol sorry !
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: Minor football rant over.... lol sorry ! [because-freedom] [desolate] [enthusiasm-of-weda] [football-rants] [queen-of-tgo] [shirtening]
Feel free to walk about football - just because I don't enjoy it doesn't mean you guys shouldn't :)
09:40
@Ara: So, hows the day going so far?
@Weda semi productive? I'm basically recreating a webpage identically for another web app, rather dull but almost done on this part at least. Got a few more bits I want to get done before my coworker returns to work.
@Weda yours?
10:05
@Ara: I am doing good. As usual: some headscratching with sensors that most of the world wouldn't know about and wouldn't use :-)
@Weda sounds intriguing :)
@Liam - this probably covers your question completely:

Q: Do we lose most of our body heat through our heads?

Monkey Tuesday If you didn't grow up in a tropical climate, you probably heard something like this as a child... Put on a hat before you go out because you lose the most heat through your head. Some say that the reason you lose more heat through your head is because "heat rises" and most of your bod...

@Aravona one of my favourite cliff diving spots always has a dead sheep wedged in the only handy crevice for climbing back up
@Rory morning!
@RoryAlsop yep, that just about covers it
@RoryAlsop Delete question?
@Liam could do if you like :-)
with ones like that my first instinct is to search Skeptics - they have some awesome questions there
@Aravona I'm 100% with you on this. I almost watch no TV, and even the kids don't seem to be that bothered that we have actually had no TV for a week (Sky box died, and while we have had odd bits on the laptop through iPlayer, it doesn't really count)
10:24
@Rory currently I only tend to watch tv after work... if I don't game for a while. Once Dynas knee has healed we will go for walks after work again :)
@Aravona As an avid gamer I totally fail at gaming. When I manage it at all it is in small chunks either before tea, or at 2am or thereabouts
@RoryAlsop I totally forgot what Pythagoras' theorem was ....fail
Hazards of too many children and hobbies
@Liam hahahahaha
@RoryAlsop whish is why when I worked it out on the hill it seemed ridic
@Liam hypoteneuse (ie where you actually walked) = square root of (track on map squared plus height gained squared)
if you did a 10k walk and gained 10k, the total distance walked will only be a bit over 14km
14.1421356
10:27
@RoryAlsop It was because the only thing I could remember from this was the: *the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the square of the other two side. * I forgot the first square.
:-)
My learning from Outdoors.SE today was that I had never used a Taut-line hitch
I eneded up with 101Km and went...erm no, that's wrong
(I browsed that knots question)
@Liam heh
@RoryAlsop which one? Not familiar with that knot
The taut-line hitch is an adjustable loop knot for use on lines under tension. It is useful when the length of a line will need to be periodically adjusted in order to maintain tension. It is made by tying a rolling hitch around the standing part after passing around an anchor object. Tension is maintained by sliding the hitch to adjust size of the loop, thus changing the effective length of the standing part without retying the knot. It is typically used for securing tent lines in outdoor activities involving camping, by arborists when climbing trees, for creating adjustable moorings in tidal...
10:29
My learning from outdoors.se today is wow a use for maths outside of school! My maths teachers were right after all...!
I have never seen it used
@Aravona I had a huge crush on my maths teacher. She was soooo clever
@Rory haha!
@RoryAlsop I've been after a knot like this for a while. I've been using clove hitch
which is a ball ache
@RoryAlsop geek cough
Like a prusik on itself
@Liam She was great. I wanted more maths so got free additional tuition outside school hours. And took extra maths subjects all the way through until I finished Uni. And yes, maths has come in useful every since. (definitely a geek)
@RoryAlsop Doesn't look very secure
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: Minor football rant over.... lol sorry ! [because-freedom] [desolate] [enthusiasm-of-weda] [football-rants] [queen-of-tgo] [rory-equals-geek]
Geeks are cool #official
10:35
@Liam Adjustable moorings and tent lines seems fine. But for arborists when climbing trees.... nope. I'll stick to my standard knots for that.
@Liam hahahahahahaha
@Rory I somehow managed to be a programmer but suck at maths
I don't use a lot of maths programming. Accounting, yes, logic, yes, hardcore maths, occasionally but not that often.
It's an odd quirk for something that people think is all maths
@Weda more cricket today :)
@Liam exactly
I use no maths for programming (well almost none) but a fair amount in my hobbies: I build a fair few electronic devices (audio effects, guitars, home automation stuff) and they need weird maths
@RoryAlsop yeah, that's all hardcore shiz
(note to self stop talking like an extra from "the Wire")
yo
10:46
@Liam the bit that really ended up confusing me was some of the maths around quantum matrices, and some fourier transform stuff. It got beyond me at that point and I've never caught up
Yo
Fo-shizzle
Going to leave my question as a waymarker for the skeptics one. So I've voted to close.

Q: How much heat is lost though your head?

LiamI've heard the old saying that "1/3 of your body heat is lost though your head", it's often cited as a reason to wear a hat on a cold day in the mountains. Is this actually true? Are their any studies/resources to back this up/contradict it?

Good idea?
@Liam yep - done
Apparently this Saturday is International Bat Night
@Aravona cricket or flapping mice?
11:01
@Aravona Loads of bats by my house
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: Minor football rant over.... lol sorry ! [because-freedom] [enthusiasm-of-weda] [flapping-mice] [football-rants] [queen-of-tgo] [rory-equals-geek]
We have what we assume is a mating pair that have nested behind our house for at least 7 years
they are really cute
@Rory flappy mice
I love bats :)
@RoryAlsop Treuddyn seems to be particularly bat friendly. I've never seen so many. The farm up the road has tons of an evening. think they nest in the cow sheds
@Liam we were worried that these two nested in our house (generally considered a bad thing) as they always fly straight at the eaves. Turns out they do a lovely swoopy/Immelman kind of thing across into the tree instead
@Liam they likely do as it will be warm and they might find plenty of insects up there to eat. Pipistrelles?
11:24
Has anybody worked on Bluetooth modules? :-(
@Weda Sorry no...
11:42
@WedaPashi Afraid not
however there are some guys in the DMZ who have. And who know this stuff inside and out.

 The DMZ

A serious place where infosec is discussed PS we don't do hard...
@Aravona How would I know?
@Liam thermometer? Evening study of insect numbers? A bat recognition chart?
</sarcasm>
:-)
The Immelmann turn refers to two different aircraft maneuvers: In World War I aerial combat, an Immelmann turn was a maneuver used after an attack on another aircraft to reposition the attacking aircraft for another attack. In modern aerobatics, an Immelmann turn (also known as a roll-off-the-top, or simply an Immelmann) is an aerobatic maneuver that results in level flight in the opposite direction at a higher altitude. == Historical combat maneuver == In World War I aerial combat, an Immelmann turn was a maneuver used after an attack on another aircraft to reposition the attacking aircraft for...
For thoose who had no idea what this meant, like me...
@RoryAlsop My bat recognition chart is out of date
@Liam pilot talk. Immelmann = swoopy turn thing
@RoryAlsop You fly?
I've got a couple of friends who are commerical pilots
11:50
@Liam Yarr. Not as much now, but my old man had us fly his plan from about the age of 4. I wanted to join the RAF but poor eyesight means I fly gliders and occasional Cessnas (with friends). Don't have my PPL yet, but have a close friend who flys 747's for Virgin Atlantic and has some gliders - so she takes us up occasionally. Mostly I'm living vicariously through my son - he gets to fly gliders in the Air Cadets
12:04
@Liam pipistrelles are tiny
@Aravona Maybe about the size of my hand with their wings outstreached. They're hard to see cos they move so fast!
@Liam ours are much bigger than that. Not sure what they are, and I haven't got any photos of them as they are so fast
@Liam probably pipistrelles then :) I love them, we had them at my dads
:)
12:50
@Rory: Okay. Thanks. I already figured out what I needed :-)
@Liam for the pictures of attractive young mountain climbers/runners?
@RoryAlsop Well....yes
#ripped
@RoryAlsop that's the best reason to join something
It's worth it simply for the climbing travel insurance. It's hard to find travel insurance which is comfortable with you spending long periods of time hanging from cliffs....
@Liam I honestly did not know you could get insurance for climbing
and I've been climbing for over 30 years
13:34
@RoryAlsop You can though the BMC, but you have to be a member. I discovered it first looking for travel insurance to go to fontainbleu`
they do life insurance too. Most won't pay out if you die climbing
I believe
I just always assumed that if you went climbing that was entirely at your own risk
(knows nothing about insurance)
@RoryAlsop And they keep crags open and stand up for mountain users rights in the UK
gets off soap box
I like to give mountain rescue money too. One day they will be picking my ass up off of some mountain or other....
I figure I might as well pay for it up front
thebmc.co.uk/… oh man, how great would it be for rock climbing to be showcased at the olympics
@Liam that I support. Although I have donated to the Coastguard, rather than mountain rescue, as they used to cover a huge percentage of the rescues up in the highlands and islands
@soph-e Yeah they tried last year. Got beaten by squash
@RoryAlsop 3 generations of lifeboat men in my family
My great great grabndad was a founder member. There's a lifeboat in cornwall named after him
13:42
@Liam wow! Very cool!
that's him
and his 6 sons
I find the moustaches ironic as I can't grow one for love nor money
@Liam top 'tache action
@Liam don't worry, usually the harder it is to grow facial hair the less likely to go bald :)
13:57
@ara haha, ever notice that for some people it looks like hair migrates from the top of their head to... everywhere else
@Aravona Yep. No baldness in my family
Plenty of gray
@soph-e Possibly too much information?!
haha it's just a gripe I've heard many times ;)
mostly from men folk, can't say it's a problem that's likely to happen to me
@Liam one of my grandads is as bald as an egg, the other could put Elvis to shame... both over 80
@Liam all my grandparents had full heads of hair until late nineties. And the men all had jet black or dark brown hair.
No taches to speak of
@Liam lol
14:21
My hair is often a point of interest, I'm 5'1 but my hair is at least 1m :)
The guys at work don't really understand why I have it so long lol, but I've been growing it since I was 15 now keep it at 1m in length - and I used to dye it a vivid orange / red.
@Aravona hence the fox <-
@Aravona I'm 6' 3" and my hair is often <1cm....Nobody ever mentions this :/
:D
Godd night guys, have a good day ahead. Leaving early today :-)
@Liam yeah ... I would love to dye it orangey red again then dip bleach about 6inches of the bottom.
@WedaPashi See ya Weda
@Liam: See ya!
14:24
@Liam well, they should!
@Weda cya dude
I've just realised that's a total lie
@Ara: See ya! Ta!
My hair is a good 3" and I've grown it much longer
....no one cares do they?
I'm not sure why I'm telling you this....
I'm going to put a bounty on this question

Q: How many calories does hiking burn?

LiamMy girlfriend and I went for a walk on Sun. We climbed 3 peaks in Snowdonia. My girlfriend had one of them Nike tracking apps running on her phone all the while. In the end it gave us these stats: Distance: 20Km (as the crow flies) Time: 8 hours Calories: 4000 The calories though were based on...

I want to see some scientfic studies as it's all a bit wishey washy
@Liam sounds a good idea!
14:58
@Aravona wow! That's a bit like my youngest. She is 8 but has only ever had 2 haircuts (and each one was just a split ends trim) so her hair is crazy long
My hair used to be about a foot long, but I shaved it to a number 3 in 2001 and it has stayed that length ever since
15:19
@Rory my hair is full of split ends... I don't condition it. But also I never blow dry it, it drys natually... My hair takes about a day to dry on ita own... but because I always walk around with wet hair I barely ever get a cold... though in winter my hair freezes.
16:01
@Ara - admittedly Lexie's hair takes about an hour each day to brush, but it is lovely
But no hair dryer. Just a towel
@Rory I bet! :D
16:20
Awesome comment
Ah, the rare Dimentium stupidus. It's legs contain a special chemical that makes you impotent and turns your mind to mush. They're harmless otherwise, just don't let one crawl on your bare skin. — Olin Lathrop 36 mins ago
