Morning
Morning all
Nice weekend?
@RoryAlsop I used to be an air cadet. I lost interest eventually they kept making me play the trumpet
08:07
@Liam morning. Had a lovely weekend... the party was brilliant :) how about you?
@Aravona Good thanks
@Aravona Little bit worse for wear on sun..:)
@Liam Aww, what did you get up to?
@Aravona My friends music festival thing. Was good! Moving into my new house today! yea!
Hello!
@WedaPashi hey wEda
08:19
@Liam: New house! Great! Cheers to that :)
@Liam: And, had not I told you, Cook will click. He played a lot better than he did this summer :)
@WedaPashi Yes, yes he did. Hopefully he can get soem kind of form back
Yeah.
Ooh busy day then @Liam :)
@aravona: Hey there!
@Liam: You are #21 all time. And I am #22!
08:37
@WedaPashi morning :) hows it going? How was the solo trek?
@Aravona: It was good. Didn't rain much, but it was pleasant and fun. Leaked my Hydration bladder though :(
@aravona: Gonna have get a new one.
@WedaPashi aww that sucks but ao long as you had a good time! :)
@aravona: yeah, it was fun
On a 2.9 this morning... but I personally have no questions...
@aravona: Nice link. Yeah and on questions, neither do I.
08:42
But that article on perils of the british countryside was ... well I knew them all already but its surpirsing how many people get injured by cows.
Easy to forget we have venomous creatures here in blighty
@aravona: U have adders there?
@WedaPashi we do. Though I've not personally seen one, only ever seen grass snakes... but since we've started geocaching we might come across more of Britain's wildlife....
@Liam wondering if hazardous wildlife could be a self answer question related to the bbc article?
There are some for California so...
@aravona: Ok. We have vipers and cobras here.. Cobras are rare to find. Vipers are pretty common. Apart from that we don't have to worry much about Spiders. Scorpions are common.
@WedaPashi I worry about all spiders lol... but I can catch them with a glass now instead of just screaming and running...
09:07
@Aravona @WedaPashi Yeah I saw that. Cows are by far the most dangerous creature your likely to come across in the UK country side. I think a Q&A qould be good on this subject. What kind of thing you thinking?
@WedaPashi We do have adders, but they are rare, only in the south of the country and are very unlikely to bite. When they do bite, unless you have a pre-existing condition your not going to die from them
@WedaPashi They're also really not aggressive. Beautiful animals actually!
@Liam I'm just writing one up... I'll post it then feel free to edit it?
@Liam oh, so pretty! :D
@Liam Mentioned.... false widows / adders / badgers / deer / cows and wild boar... don't think there is much else?
I also mentioned how unlikely it is to see some of them but they are a risk regardless.
09:27
@Aravona not sure I've ever heard of a dangerous badger? :)
@Liam well they carry bTB ... we have a lot of badger holes near our local dairy farm...
@Aravona Oh, I suppose form an infectious diseases point of view
They actually destroyed a public byway with their dens... and we have a lot of night walkers :)
@Aravona Rabbit holes?
Not sure what context your question is taking but sounds like a similar thing. Maybe?
@Liam I could have gotten down one. It was more something to avoid when night walking with a dog... if it runs down a big badger hole and they are around.
I've mentioned rabbits from a disease POV as if you're a kind sole helping an injured rabbit (which people do around here and take them to St tiggywinkles) myxomatosis is a threat to pet rabbits as well
Soul*
09:37
@Aravona I was just reading about this (i wondered if humans could get it) I didn't know myxamatosis was imported to Europe on purpose!?
@Liam yeah I believe they used it as a cull method? Then it got out of hand and almost destroyed our rabbit population
@Aravona Always reminds me of watership down...Scarry that film
@Liam ... oh yeah :(
My question with answer - Liam feel free to add your own answer / edit mine
@Aravona Very comprehensive! :)
@Liam btw the only reason I aside avoid handling adders is because I can't condone saying handle a snake if you don't know how.
I said*
09:44
@Aravona I'm pretty sure it's illegal to handle adders without a license
Just had a quick search and nothing says that
In fact there appears to be a BBC program showing how to handle an adder
so maybe I'm mistaken
@Liam thought that might be the case.... you can't touch much of our wildlife without breaching some protection law nowadays...
@Liam still better safe than sorry... if you don't know how... don't do it :)
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: still better safe than sorry... if you don't know how... don't do it :) [euphemism] [sausage-metaphysics]
I mentioned wolves as people still want them reintroduced and there have been debates and poles on the matter so if someone googles it then it can crop up :)
@Liam Lol!!!
09:51
'Orrible little bliters seagulls
Forgot those pesky birds... feel free to add that to the list!
It's a good l;ist for when @WedaPashi visits the UK!
@Liam @WedaPashi definitely! Fear our cows and seagulls
2
@Aravona LOL
It's always the quite ones
Haha yes it is @Liam speaking of quiet @WedaPashi is pretty silent now lol...
10:04
@Aravona Watching the cricket? TBF, what time is it in India right now??
@Liam about 3:30?
Play is back on now... Let's see how we go
Back to 3 for questions now.
1
A: What hazardous wildlife is there in the UK?

AravonaIn the UK we have, comparative to other countries, very few venomous creatures. However the false widow and adders are still a risk. False widows have mostly been recorded in the South of England and Wales (though I've personally never seen one) but have been recorded to have bitten and hospita...

Lol the comment :D
bloody cows
3
There were 215 injuried and 6 deaths recorded in the UK between 2008-2011 due to being trampled by cows
:O
10:23
@EverythingRightPlace Cows are bad ass...
Yup... nwver had a bad experience as a walker with cows though. Just be sensible and you should be fine...
I have however had very bad experiences with cows as a horse rider... bloody horse was bloody scared of cows!
@Aravona I used to live next to a diary farm, the cows would be very agressive sometimes
Bulls, yes
but a cow with a young calf (especially if you have a dog) is a very dangerous animal
@Liam not saying doesn't happen we are surrounded by farms, just never as a walker had an issue
People forget they can trample you very easily
@Aravona Yeah, were saying the same thing!
:)
We tend to gauge the cows before entering if they have calves though... usually if they are the other end of the field they are ok... if we can't go round them safely we xhoose a different route... like I said it's about being sensible.
Lol we are arent we @Liam .... MOOOOO
10:27
I've had a horse who was scared of water... and my other one was scared of cows (and had hayfever.... I had the only bloody horse I've ever met getting hayfever!)
MOO MOTHERFUCKER!!!
:D
yesterday there was no single activity on TGO ;(
all had a nice sunday outdoors I guess
@EverythingRightPlace I was out geocaching for a good portion but I did check in and say hi... but yeah busy weekend
Nah I don't mean the chat
There was no new question e.g.
Do you see the ants?
There was one yeaterday I think
Oh no that was Sat my mistake
Ants?
10:34
damnit
!
ants=small people
they look like ants
Oh right :) sorry can't see it so well on a mobile
This morning has gone rather fast
@EverythingRightPlace Wheres that @EverythingRightPlace?
That's the Becherhaus in the Stubai Alps
@Liam dropbox.com/sh/5e0hniwfkjzky0d/AABhuiXDPQ8lrfcn9yjWGF0Ea/… here you can see it again, wasn't sleeping there but it just looks amazing
10:48
@EverythingRightPlace I've been planning to visit the Alps for some time now. I'm hopefully going to climb Mont Blanc.
:)
I will do it also one day
But has to be quite expensive
@EverythingRightPlace Looks like some nice terrain
Did you walk up?
@Aravona and @Liam: Ahh, a mate dragged me into a meeting
@Liam @aravona: Yeah, where were we?
@EverythingRightPlace in the photo?
Did you take the photo?
@aravona: @Liam: Its 4.21 pm right now
@EverythingRightPlace Wasn't sure, with the "haus" on the top, thought there could be a cable car
That's the burr (is this the correct word?!) when you come from Wilder Freiger to Wilder Pfaff. After that we climbed Zuckerhütl, that's the peak of the Stubai Alps
We just stayed the night on that hut. You can find those huts everywhere in the Alps, also in bigger heights.
Sometimes they have cable cars but mostly for the transport of food/equipment
So you have to walk there and that's good :)
@Liam nice situation answer to my question now as well :)
@EverythingRightPlace Cool, I'll have to pick your brains a little. I need to find out a little more about walking in the Alps
11:02
@WedaPashi welcome back.
@Aravona Yeah, always good to get a couple of perspectives
@EverythingRightPlace We'd probably call that an Arete, I think you mean Spur?
A spur is a lateral ridge or tongue of land descending from a hill, mountain or main crest of a ridge. Sometimes the term is used in sense of subpeak. == Examples == Examples of spurs are: Abbott Spur, which separates the lower ends of Rutgers Glacier and Allison Glacier on the west side of the Royal Society Range in Victoria Land, Antarctica Boott Spur, a subpeak of Mount Washington Kelley Spur, 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) east of Spear Spur on the south side of Dufek Massif in the Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica == See also == Draw or re-entrant, the low ground between two spurs. == R...
An arête is a thin, almost knife-like, ridge of rock which is typically formed when two glaciers erode parallel U-shaped valleys. The arête is a thin ridge of rock that is left separating the two valleys. Arêtes can also form when two glacial cirques erode headwards towards one another, although frequently this results in a saddle-shaped pass, called a col. The edge is then sharpened by freeze-thaw weathering, and the slope on either side of the arete steepened through mass wasting events and the erosion of exposed, unstable rock. The word "arête" is actually French for edge or ridge; simil...
Would love to walk in the alps... obly ever flown over them
@Liam @WedaPashi 301-2
I'm off early today, so I'll see you all tomorrow
@Liam I meant Arete. A thin path which leads to the summit. You often find those kind of climbs in the Alps at least as a part of the tour.
@Liam have a good one mate

2 hours later…
13:23
@Liam @aravona: 378-4. Bell is playing so good.
@Liam @EverythingRightPlace: Whats the difference between a Dike and an Arete?
13:41
@WedaPashi yup seems to be a good test so far :)
@aravona: Yeah, true
@WedaPashi long old afternoon for me. Trying not to raid our tuck shop for chocolate but think I might loose the will soon lol
@Aravona: LOL
@WedaPashi I'm trying to be healthy... it is so hard when everyone here eats so much junk
13:56
@aravona: You gotta stay away from such people :D
Haha I should yeah! Trying to gwt me to huy cheap chocolate and sodas.
Buy*
@WedaPashi Bell hit 100
@aravona: Junk food kills your fitness like nothing does. I remember the hard times I had had when I was into the habit of eating a lot of junk food. Now I am a total vegetarian and no alcohol/beer et all :D
@aravona: Yaayy! I love the way he bats. Totally deserves it!
@WedaPashi yeah he is doing well!
Also I'm not a vegetarian and I could never be, one meat is for me tasty, but also good protien but also medically I can't be one.
I am trying to cut out excess of fatty foods, junk foods... replaced them with oat based tracker bars, sunflower seeds etc :) I still have some junk food but it's once in a while treats now.
@Aravona: Thats good.
@WedaPashi are you a complete vegetarian or a pescetarian?
14:07
@aravona: A complete vegetarian. I've rather never tasted a chicken or any animal for that matter. Except for Eggs. even thats through Cakes/Pastries. Never had omelette!
@WedaPashi oh really? So no fish either?
We have 6 chickens at home for eggs. They get fed a lot of leftovers sometimes but they also eat the garden weeds and slugs :) they are very friendly and most of them like being held. Except mine, Susan, she doesn't like people much
@aravona: Never! Sounds real strange I know. But in India you'd definitely come across people like me :)
@aravona: Susan? Is that a name for your chick?
@WedaPashi not disbelieving you for a second! It's just so many people here say they are vegetarians but actually are pescetarian because they still eat fish.
I have fully vegetarian meals at times but I still need meat as I have Acid Reflux, so my body couldn't cope going meat free.
It'd mean lots more medication more often.
@WedaPashi yup my chicken is called Susan :)
2
@aravona: Nice name! :)
@WedaPashi sheais lovely :)
One of my favourite snacks is actually a dish from Mauritius cakled a chilli cake... its crushed chickpea with spring onion and chillies made into a little ball and deep fried for a minute or so :) so yum
14:15
@aravona : Ahh, glad that we discussed food here. Am I gonna have to have a trouble doing the trans pennine trail, if I bank solely on Vegetarian food?
In the UK? Nope! We have plenty of vegetarian options here for both snacks and meals. Everything vegetarian will come with a 'suitable for vegetarians' written on the packet. @WedaPashi you should be fine when stocking up for it :)
Plenty of oat based meals, porridge and museli, and you can get loads of vegetarian quick cook rice or pasta meals too. Boil in the bag rices and couscous are really useful when camping :)
Car camping that is... I will probably take some couscous packets to Wales next month
@aravona: Thats great!
I also wouldn't mind eating non-vegetarian food. Its just that I am not used to it, so it may cause me trouble cooking it. But, you never know if I am gonna be joined by @aravona and @Liam, then may be, I need not worry about recipes! :)
#Optimism
14:36
@WedaPashi well I can fry anything which helps when camping ;) my fiance and I like to take eggs with us for the first night, bacon, sausages sometimes too then we have a lotof pasta and rice meals :) and of course good old beans
@aravona: Sounds good :) I am a bit less foodie!
Well, well.. End of the day here at office, and I am gonna be off now. :) You have a good day ahead! Eat well :)
@WedaPashi ;) not to worry... I think there are plenty of things we can sort for you food wise here in blighty
@aravona: Great! Will definitely look forward to it.
:D
For my two night stay at a campsite and climb of Snowdon I'm going to be taking... couscous x4 Kendal Mint Cake x2 sunglower seeds x 100g Eggs x8 plain hobnobs x2 beans and sausages tinned x4 and beef jerky.
That will be for me mostly but the couscous, eggs and beans for everyone :)
