@nhinkle: Hows it going?

6:00 AM
@WedaPashi Alright. Probably heading to bed soon. Went paddling for the first time yesterday! That was a lot of fun.
(Kayak paddling that is. Been other types of paddling many times.)

6:19 AM
@nhinkle: Sounds like fun. :-)

6:45 AM
@Rory: Hey there! Hows it going?

Q: Trail gun for protection against bears

adogdenChoosing a trail gun is proving more challenging than I would like, I'm wondering what handgun calibers are powerful enough to provide some protection against bears, particularly the aggressive variety, while being manageable enough for a smaller framed shooter ( whether that be a younger shooter...

I don't get the gun culture in America
Why would you want to shoot a bear? Scare the bugger off, don't kill it

8:01 AM
@Liam agreed!

@liam: To be honest, even Hunting as an activity never make sense to me. Killing for fun is not a thing to do for me.
How and When would people understand that killing snakes, shooting bears and other animals is not the solution.way to go outdoors. I believe, those who are scared to go without a gun or something like that, should stay in, stay warm. Living outdoors is not their cup of coffee. Thats entirely a personal opinion btw.
@W.Goeman: Hi there, and Welcome to the Base Camp.

American's love guns
5th amendment and all that. Do you know how many school shootings there have been since the dumblaine masacre in the 90s that banned all firearms in the UK?
zero
:)

@liam: Thats a commendable success story and an example to others!

8:28 AM
Now I want to make a sling
3
Q: What are the things I need to know when fashioning a sling?

paperstreetI was trying to make a sling the other day to entertain my kids (yes this is a terrible idea) and although the finished product worked (sort of) it occurred to me that this, like all ancient handi-craft, is probably deceptively complicated and has some crisply defined right and wrong materials an...

8:54 AM
@Liam firearms arent banned in the UK though, they are heavily licensed and require police back ground checks etc. We have a shotgun at home, and my dad has several rifles. Plus airguns are still legal with no required licence.
The difference between us and the us is we won't let anyone have one and it is illegal to carry one in public outside of a case.
Let just anyone*

@Aravona But you can't buy your 10 year old daughter a hand gun?! In fact you can't buy a handgun. If you do own a shot gun (and a shot gun is pretty much the only gun you can leaglly own) it has to be licensed, you have to be licensed, and kept in a locked cupboard, etc. etc.
Our laws would be deemed un patriotic in america!
Which to me, is insanity
:)

@Liam you can have a handgun yes, if you are over 18, pass a background check, are a member of a club, and it is kept in a properly locked gun cabinet, usually chained to tge rafters in a loft.
They do pistol shooting at a lot of clubs.

@Aravona I didn't think you could own a handgun at all?

My dad used to have a pistol, I was too scared to fire it. But I enjoy .22 gallery shooting
Hold a sec Im on my phone I can't get you the info too easily

The Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 was the second of two Acts of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1997 that amended the regulation of firearms within the United Kingdom. It was introduced by the newly elected Labour government of Tony Blair. The other Act was the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997. == Background == The act was created in response to the Snowdrop Petition following the Dunblane Massacre. The previous Conservative government had followed the recommendations of the Cullen Report on the massacre and introduced the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 that banned "high calibre"...
The only handguns still allowed following the ban were:

Antique and muzzle-loading black-powder guns
Guns of historic interest whose ammunition is no longer available ("Section 7.1" weapons)
Guns of historic interest with current calibres ("Section 7.3" weapons)[note 1]
Air pistols
Guns which fall outside the Home Office definition of "handguns".[note 2]
Pistols used by hunters for humane despatch, limited to two shot capacity.
Pistols for use as personal protection weapons, mainly in Northern Ireland by retired police or prison officers, but also prominent figures who were considered at r

According to that the only handgun you can still own is a air pistol or a two shot capacity hand gun

@Liam ahh I have no idea what my dad had. Probably the former.
Best information about current gun laws though will be on the NRA website
The above link refers to their pistol competitions

@Aravona Probably a target pistol? Breach loading with a single shot usually.

@Liam my gun history is an air rifle,which I've had training shooting... And .22 gallery. I've done fullbore but I miss a lot at those ranges, 1000 yrds

@Aravona I used to have a .22 and a .125 air rifle when I was a kid
You'd struggle to injure someone with one of these! :)
You can kill a rabbit but that's about it!

9:10 AM
@Liam the bullets in a. 22 aren't that small though

You are quite little though so.... ;)

Dynadins dads mate growing up had a hole put in his hand from an air rifle lol

@Aravona Me and my nephew used to shot each other in the foot

It's amusing you can have a shotgun so easily here still, but they are the farmers favourite

ha ha

9:11 AM
Just had bad news coming in: A known guy (I should say a fatherly figure to me), aged 64, went missing from 18th Oct when he left for a tricky one-day solo trek, was found dead a couple hours ago.

@Aravona Not the same as America though still. You can't just walk into a shop and buy a fully automatic handgun

@Liam lol...
@Weda oh sweetie, I'm so sorry to hear that

@WedaPashi That's bad
What happened?

@Liam no but I can walk into my local family run diy / gardening store and buy air pistols and guns from 30quid up lol

The body is just recovered from a very inaccessible place, so its likely that he missed the trail and got stranded. Injuries of a minor fall are visible, but the overall looks at the body suggests that it wasn't an immediate death on fall.
Symptoms of dehydration are clearly visible. Water bottles empty, body has rotten too fast to imagine for a day after death.
I can't believe what has just happened.

9:15 AM
@Weda :( three days in the heat on your own...
I'm sorry for your loss love.

A bad day on hike with worst case dehydration can literally kill
@Ara: I can just only imagine what he must have gone through. He was a tough guy though. Did a couple of good attempts on some seriously tough himalayan climbs. We've been listening him for advices with hungry open ears for nearly a decade now. :(
Anyways, what has happened has happened. I better go now, before night gotta ride a good 300 miles before I get to his place.
See ya later.
Have a good day ahead, take care and stay safe.

@Weda stay safe and see you soon

@WedaPashi sorry to hear about that mate, take care

@Liam busy day?

@Aravona Always! Listening off at the mo

You?

9:37 AM
@Liam busy as ever. I've jury duty next week though.

@Aravona Yeah, crazy. Never actually met anyone who's done jury duty before

@Liam I don't really want to do it myself actually

@Aravona It could be a good one? It's prob some toerag stolen a red bull from a shop...

@Liam yeah I'd just rather be at work getting paid though, the court won't even meet half my daily pay.

@Aravona I thought you also got paid for this stuff? that's crap
Stupid govenment

9:51 AM
@Liam yeah but not much. Unless it goes on for months.
And I hope it doesn't do that

user116848
Does it ever happen to you that when you listen to any music after a while you think 'Wow! the sound is awesome'.

user116848
12:14 PM
I mean normally I don't appreciate the good sound of music in my headphones.

user116848
It seems weird to me.

@Arrow do you mean sound quality? Or just the quality of music?

user116848
@Aravona Yeah. Sound quality!

user116848
Although I have normal headphones. Maybe it's just me.

user116848
It seems fantastic though.

user116848

@Liam my favourite music to work to is either the Bastion soundtrack, or Two Steps from Hell

@Aravona I will give them a go. always like something new

@Liam obviously the Bastion soundtrack is better if you have played the game :) but Two Steps From Hell are great

user116848
@Aravona I love " Two Steps from Hell"

user116848
It's soothing.

user116848

@Arrow depends, some of the songs ft skrillex arent exactly soothing.

@Aravona Man I hate Skrillex
@Aravona Are these all film scores

CommunityWe all love Gardening & Landscaping Stack Exchange, but there is a whole world of people out there who need answers to their questions and don't even know that this site exists. @Liam I answered 7 and asked 1 of the 10 'randomly' picked questions there.
@Liam I'm doin well, yourself?

@J.Musser Can't complain. Been a busy couple of weeks.
I could do with some plant advice on occasion...

@Liam Permalinks are useful when replying to old messages also.

@RoflcoptrException hey
That is a very old message I replied to.
@Liam What kind of plant advice do you need?
And sorry about the chat lectures

no, no
it's useful
What brings you back to TGO then?
@J.Musser

@Liam I wanted to post a meta answer:

A: Species Identification

J. MusserI was wondering when this question was coming up. The biggest issue: All plant identification is covered in the identification tag on Gardening & Landscaping beta (by far the biggest tag there), and there is some overlap there and with the species-identification tag on Biology beta, which cover...

4:07 PM
@J.Musser I forgot about that meta
I meant to reply myself but wasn't sure what to say

@Liam I like answering these types.

@J.Musser re-tagged the question for you as you requested

@Liam request already deleted :P thanks
Wish I could suggest edits on child metas.
@Liam you have a respectable rep on the Great Outdoors.

Here's the question that prompted that meta post BTW

Q: What is this beetle? Found in heather in snowdonia

LiamWe were walking in the hills of snowdonia the other day and my girlfriend found this in the heather: I've never seen anything like it. Can anyone identify it? It was the biggest beetle I've ever seen.

@J.Musser I try my best! This is my thing really and I had become disillusioned with SO
There's a few of us here in chat everyday now

@Liam I'd vtc as ot, linking in comment to the meta post oneboxed above. The question is good, but I don't think it belongs on here.
@Liam Like me on GL. :D
@Liam Leaving it open might encourage new users to post similar id questions, using it as an example. In the future, these can be migrated to other sites as necessary.

4:15 PM
@J.Musser I think it's too old to be migrated now?

@J.Musser indeed

@Liam Looks like you guys are having trouble keeping up activity.

@J.Musser Yes. We have been for some time
We have flourishes but it tends to get quiet

@Liam That's our problem on GL too. We get seasonal bursts.

4:22 PM
@J.Musser When we had a focus on question we got up to (I think it was) 3.8 quertions per day
but then it died down
There's a handful of regulars always good answers. Just not the people asking

@Liam GL stays at 3.5 or near most of the year.
When it goes lower than 3, I try to make up the difference myself.

@J.Musser Dito
only so many questions you can ask though!
Hi @EverythingRightPlace

I was active there until July '12, took a break until may 16, '14. Look at the difference here:
@EverythingRightPlace Hiya!

Hey
Admin stats?

@J.Musser How do you get these?

Is it from your main site, Gardening.SX?

@EverythingRightPlace Yup.
@Liam Look here:

@J.Musser Amazing, thx :)

@EverythingRightPlace Yup. SEDE is awesome. You can find out almost anything there.

But it's not working with my SX account

@EverythingRightPlace SE?

I am Mr. "jon.doe15902"
@J.Musser yes

@EverythingRightPlace Yeah, it's not on the network, you recreate your account there.

@Liam I always notice there are lots of Americans in TGO because there are weapon questions so regularly... I would like to ban those questions but unfortunately they seem to be on topic...

@EverythingRightPlace But you should be able to log in using your SE openid.

@J.Musser how?

I can't wait until GL graduates. I want to be a mod there. :P

Is it a hobby or your job?

@EverythingRightPlace Then sede is the right place for you. :)
@EverythingRightPlace I'm a professional.

;)
Where are you working then?

4:44 PM
@EverythingRightPlace Here in the local area.. I'm self-employed.

And it seems you like the job a lot

I do diagnosis, spraying, pruning, mowing, general lawn care, landscape design, installations, maintenance, expert consultations, a little nursery, sell some veggies, christmas trees, etc.
@EverythingRightPlace Oh yeah. Can't beat growing things.

Is it more the wealthy people with big mansions and gardens who give you jobs? Some friends of mine studied landscape architecture and it seems it's really tough to get a job. At least locally.
I myself am not the big gardener but my family is. When I visit them I help from time to time. Last weekend my sister and I harvested a 2700 gram zucchini :)

@EverythingRightPlace Ah. Nice. But we take plant id questions, so you could ask one of those.

plant id?
identifying?

4:55 PM
@EverythingRightPlace I (being one person) prefer to work in smaller properties, to get more variety.
@EverythingRightPlace yup.

when I have such a question I will maybe do so
I am from Germany so you won't know the plant I share... we are very exotic here ;)
