Q: Sources of Authenticated Offcial information about carrying stuff in UK

WedaPashiAsking a question in the similar/parallel league with this one here, I plan to carry my own portable either Propane or White Gas stove when I do a part of the E2 trail. There are official instructions about what I can carry in a train in India, as the website says, according to which I am not le...

11:08 AM
@Weda not lunch yet no. And I'll have a look at thatpost

@Ara: Okay

@weda I think I've covered it?
edited it a bit... but should help?

11:31 AM
@Ara: I was just waiting you to edit it the way wanted before I go reading.
@Ara: Fantastic!
And, I didn't see, I am 6k now! Yippie!

@Weda grats - also added another note about the UK Terror Threat Level
some people may see a gas canister in a backpack on a (horrific to state this but bear in mind this is not my prejudice!) non white person as a threat - 7/7 bombings.

Hey all
working from home this am

@Liam morning

@WedaPashi. I think that question should be migrated to Travel.SE? @Aravona has given a great answer but it doesn't feel (to me) within scope here.

@Liam true the only link is gear

12:24 PM
@Liam apparently my answer was mostly irrelevant lol

@Aravona nothing like a constructive comment and that is nothing....

@Liam see my replies to him. He didn't take into account peoples perspectives at all.
Nor did does he seem fussed about taking illegal items into another country.
People, who needs them ^^

@Aravona I'm not sure what his points are. I think the whole question should be migrated anyway.

12:40 PM
@Liam true. Though I'd delete my answer first.
Unless it doesn't migrate answers
Anyway I did an amazing night cache the other day

@Aravona I think your answers relevant TBH. Oh well it's in the lap of the mods...
@Aravona What'd ya get?

@Liam it was a 15ish reflective tacks on trees leading us to the cache which was a good quality one. Then we went to the pub :) Need to write the story up for the blog :)

1:06 PM
Dynadin was walking in front of me and as his foot left a plant it sprung up and hit me in the groin, it was brambles... Then I stepped back and stung my bum on nettles.

@liam: Umm, quite acceptable if moved to travel.SE
@Ara: Dear, your answer does add a value to the info that I am gathering.. I disagree with the guy there.
And @Ara: I do understand the thing about what obligations one may face for carrying potentially dangerous stuff (with unharming intentions of course) like Hunting knife, ice axe and Propane Gas Stoves, etc, especially being a non-white person. There is nothing You and I can do about it, apart from being adhered to laws.

@Weda exactly. If you don't prepare for the worst bad things can happen. Some people maybe happy to take the risks but I'd prefer to know where I stand. The UK police force is massively tolerant, but still the public... Thr public can be volatile and can go off at any moment. It doesn't matter what you do... In the US they want to ban some geocaches becauae people think they are bombs.
We had warnings that the police will atop you when geocaching because it can look like a drug drop... Especially when we cached around Chequers.
Chequers being the Prime Ministers summer home.

@Ara: Ahh, thats unfortunate upto certain extent.
Its a usual tendency of few human to be repellent towards and being more suspicious about few of the adventure activities.

1:21 PM
@Weda well people panic... I'm 100% sure I look dodgey in airports, because flying creeps me out I get nervous and edgey

Like in India, if you are carrying a Hunting Knife or a fixed-blade knife, you are gone if somebody finds out.

@Weda you can have a folding knife here, so long as the blade doesnt lock in place. That is the guide line, but a lot of campers I know use lock in place leathermans, I know guys who fish who have fixed blades for gutting.... But ita relative and the police are usually good with it... But that said, they might not be. So it's better tobe safe than sorry

@Ara: Thats true: So it's better to be safe than sorry

@Weda Lol yeah, don't get me wrong I love having fun and taking risks, just not jail time risks lol

@Ara: Same here. :D Though I was once arrested, not handcuffed or locked-up though, for leading a silent mob against the institutional corruption :D
I'd definitely call that a risk :D :P

1:35 PM
@Weda wow!

@Ara: wow? o_O

@Weda leading a silent protest is pretty impressive

@Ara: hehe. Thanks.

@Weda I've petitioned a lot but never protested

@Ara: Umm, I am more of a "beat-drum to wake up the neighbours" sort of a guy when authorities don't do what they should be doing, or don't do the stuff in the way they should be doing.

1:39 PM
@Weda I have to say the police around where i am are decent people, and they do a decent job.
My uni had police training so we never had issues with the teens there, and we had to go through their training sometimes too... Like when they had metal detector training and we all had to be searched going into the building

@Ara: An incidence of institutional corruption could have costed a friend of mine, a junior an admission or roughly 7K USD. So, I blew the whistle, got the mob behind. Authorities knelt in roughly two days. Though I was veryyy hungry all the way long during the two days.. It was a hunger strike.
@Ara: Oh, that makes life easy when you trust your cop. :-)

@Weda wow, I'd cave on a hunger strike...

@Ara: hehe.. Wasn't that easy. :-)

@Aravona ha ha hilarious :)

@ara: Our parents were glad that it didn't hit the media much.
@liam: Hey buddy!

1:47 PM
@Liam :)

@liam: Did you see Liverpool game last weekend? They pulled a nail-biting win there :D
@Ara @liam: How much authenticate this is?

A: Sources of Authenticated Official information about carrying stuff in UK

A E UK National Rail Conditions of Carriage Restrictions Any Train Company may refuse to accept an item of luggage, an article, an animal or a cycle, even though it meets the requirements set out in Condition 47 and 48 and Appendix B, if, in the opinion of its staff: (a) it may...

You being there, have much much better idea about this?

2:02 PM
Yeah it's a good answer. Specific to gas only. But his conclusion was ultimately the same as mine - anything can be taken as a weapon if it'sout of context
But usually you'll be fine.
Bet bet for you though ia to just buy the gas in the UK. Saves you a bunch of hassle.
And if you're going to an outdoorsy area you'll be able to pick one up and chuck it when done without probably being on a bus or train at all.
Depends on the size, and type of gas of course lol
You don't want to go lugging a calor canister around those are huge lol

No no, as its likely to be solo trip, it shall be very portable
I can really manage to fit the up into the backpack, but I am just worried about if I am allowed to carry it legally or not.

Gas isn't illegal no, as I said in my post - a lot of things that aren't illegal can still be an issue. But if you just buy it when you get here, and keep it with your gear should be fine. Like my tradesman example - it's about context
Though remember from the other guys post National Rail might not be your provider for travel so you still need to research who you are going with for their DOs and Don'ts as I said in my answer.

@Ara: I'll see the cost differences and decide :D

@weda about £3.99 a bottle averagely for something you clip a stove onto?

@Ara: Thats manageable :-)
@ara: Oh, wait a min, " National Rail might not be your provider for travel so you still need to research who you are going with for their DOs and Don'ts" what does that mean?

2:12 PM
@Weda well if you travel with Virgin or another train company the info from National Rail won't be correct?

@Ara: Honestly, I never knew that there are multiple train companies in UK. My bad, need to get more data.

National Rail only applies to National Rails trains, though it is most common it isn't always the cheapest or a train might not be available to where you want to go.
The same will go for bus companies. I only picked Arriva - stating it's one of many - because it's what is common to Bucks
And each company will of course have it's own terms of service
Think of buses and trains like you would flights - each airline is different

Welcome the the UK!

Q: How can I work out the price of a UK bus fare online?

Leo KingI find it vexing and confusing that, while I can get a price for any train ticket, coach ticket, plane ticket, taxi fare etc., there's no obvious way to look up the price of a bus ticket. First - who are the main bus company in the county where I live - will give you the price of fixed tickets li...

@WedaPashi ^

@Weda after Italy this year where we had a massive issue with Taxis I swear every time I go abroad now I'll learn bus time tables for the area... It was so cheap and so easy to get around!

@Aravona ha Italian taxi drivers...I can imagine
I once got scammed on an italian train though. Guy pretended to work for the train company and led us down a quite end of the station and demanded money off us

2:21 PM
They were a ripoff unless you had a meter!!

Italians are just like that

@Liam ouch, not good.

Speaking from someone who's old girlfriend was italian too!
They kind of believe if your stupid enough to fall for a scam, tough s*it. It's not their problem. Will always try it on

@Ara @liam: Thanks a ton for the information. :)
@liam @Ara: If you find Italy tough place to travel? Try India. :D
The train is called a Local (technically, EMU: ElectroMotive Unit) and the lifeline of travelling in Mumbai.
And thats how you get into one of them in crowded hours.

@Weda the other guys answer appears to be more supported :) I'll probably delete mine shortly, though, haven't decided

2:30 PM
@Ara: Did you mean answer ? You don't have to delete it anyway. It has good links. If I were you, I'd keep it there.

@Weda yeah already edited.
@Weda maybe.

Sometimes its good to keep an answer, or may be even add an answer to a question that already has an answer, accepted one as well.
May add some value for some or the other user.
Thats entirely a personal opinion though.
@Ara @liam: Alright, time to leave. Feeling a bit tired today, may be worked less and attended more meetings. Have a Good day ahead, take care, see ya later!

@WedaPashi See ya

@Weda cya mate, have a good one.
@Liam did I ask if you had a good weekend?

@Aravona not today! It was very relaxed actually. didn't do a great deal.
You went Geocaching?

2:43 PM
@Liam yeah, with a coworker and our other halves, had great fun and I got tipsy(as usual after two pints of cider!) and I baked cakes and brownies
@Liam are you still planning to do winter training in Scotland?

@Aravona Yep
It's proving to be a bit more pricey than I hoped

@Liam awww :( looks awesome though!
We plan to wild camp scotland in the next few years

3:37 PM
@Aravona I wild camp quite a bit
it's not that hard, and cheaper!

4:10 PM
@Liam seems super fun toi
