The Little Albert experiements are also grossly misrepresented in popular media if you didn't know
Agile methodologies supported by cognitive science: infoq.com/articles/brain-scrum-maza
Or perhaps little albert did die at 6: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

1:10 AM
@BenBrocka Thank you for that link! Highly relevant. We're discussing introducing agile in our work environment.
Haha, I never realized it but Activity Theory actually also contradicts Maslow's hierarchy in that sense.

6 hours later…
7:25 AM
@StevenJeuris @BenBrocka Individuals do work more productively in teams. - The Agile Manifesto. Agreed but don't you think that if agile isn't properly guided, this may lead to Groupthink - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink

7:39 AM
Also, is there a scientific study with a well-established correlation between group activity and increase in cognitive abilities (exclusively due to the influence of group activity)

7 hours later…
2:35 PM
@Ubermensch That might be question worthy, no?

2:59 PM
@BenBrocka interesting! I'll read that later today.

@JoshGitlin Hi!
It's time we write up an 'how to edit' post I guess. We should prevent people from starting to mass-edit old posts for minor chances, just reference list style issues, etc ...

Morning @Steven!
@StevenJeuris yeah. There's some great references on MSO we can... borrow from :-)

There are a few things we can mention specifically relating to CogSci, so I feel meta could benefit from our own faq, how to edit.

I can't stay long, sadly I need to clean my house today

@JoshGitlin And of course we should borrow. :)

3:03 PM
@StevenJeuris definitely, I agree

If you know canonical posts on meta, could you link them?
Then I'll do the composing today.

Sure, let me find some

Q: To edit or not to edit?

zobgibI wonder this when I read questions a lot on SO. Is it common convention when you see a new user make a question with bad formatting (not using proper code casing on SO or not using latex math formatting on mathematics) to edit their question for them so the formatting is nice and pretty, or to ...

is looking for more

Also, if we are all going to start editing Ben's answer to reflect the community opinion, shouldn't it be CW?

hmmmm good question, let me think on that

Q: Is it bad behavior to edit and answer a question?

Steve SchneppFrom time to time I notice questions that could be improved (in style, punctuation, clarity of thought, tags, etc.) But I also have the answer to them. I just feel wrong editing a question (even for a retag) that I also answer. What's the policy on this?

Jeromy does have a point that we actually do need a "canonical answer to the question of references and citations", which incorporates both the APA style and it's formatting.
But I figured it's a bit early to start working on that now, as we have far from decided on 'a canonical form' yet.

Q: We're discouraged from fixing typos and misspellings on SE sites?

ravenI just attempted to fix a typo on a question on cooking.stackexchange.com and saw this Oops! Your edit couldn't be submitted because: Your edit summary must be at least 10 characters This edit is less than 6 characters; surely more can be improved with your edit? So, misspelled words have to...

Q: Why are trivial edits discouraged?

TshepangLooking at Edit questions and answers privilege, I find this to be a surprising requirement: Try to make the post substantively better when you edit, not just change a single character. Tiny, trivial edits are discouraged. What motivated this, or rather, what does this mean exactly? Does th...

Those last two are good specifically for minor edits
Now I have to depart but I will return in a few hours!

@JoshGitlin K thanks for the links!
You'll see a brand new shiny post on meta next time you visit. ;p

@StevenJeuris Hi

@Ubermensch Welcome back! ;p

Thanks for the warmth

Had a good night's rest to ponder on that group activity question? :)

3:26 PM
Me too. Hope you are fascinated by the functioning of the brain(this seems to be a bit dumb from me)

@Ubermensch Haha, yes I am. Unfortunately I'm no expert at all in the field, but we have some great users from who we can learn a lot.

@StevenJeuris Sure and I have always felt that everybody should about cognition - the ability to think, Why, how, and what we think?

@Ubermensch Interesting thought, I figure it does help in rationalizing your thoughts.

@StevenJeuris The moment I start thinking, I am going to be rational

@Ubermensch As a programmer I'm also starting to feel everybody should be able to use a computer and the internet proficiently. But if I recall correctly plenty initiatives to establish that have been set up already. :)
But just knowing the basics of programming can give your immense productivity boosts. Just script all the repetitive work you do. :)

3:37 PM
@StevenJeuris Of course Steven. And I believe everybody must learn psychology, philosophy and economics. This would make people more rational

Cut short, everybody needs a proper education? :) Where are you from?

@StevenJeuris Hope you haven't turned serious mate

@Ubermensch What do you mean?

@StevenJeuris It seems that the chat is wavering a bit too much and I have dragged it further. Point blank - Do you use any research software in your work?

If you are referring to everybody knowing psychology, philosophy, economics, ... yes I'm serious, but you shouldn't interpret knowing as meaning having studied several years on the subject. A basic knowledge is what I was implying.

3:43 PM
@StevenJeuris My goal is to create a mass simulation package powered by AI.
@StevenJeuris The message should have been everybody must learn a bit of psychology, philosophy and economics.

@Ubermensch None. At work I create cycling training software for professional cyclists, and for my thesis I'm working on a user interface which is supposed to make the life of any knowledge worker using it easier.

@StevenJeuris You are spot on with "knowing as meaning". Yes knowing, understanding, learning and perceiving are different. I must not have bluffed here
@StevenJeuris I work on data analysis (cost/revenue analysis). Are you interested in creating any sort of open source project?

@Ubermensch Too busy to work on any other projects at the moment, and I'm hoping to start a spin-off open source project to continue working on my thesis after I finish it.

@StevenJeuris OK. Happy talking to you Steven. Would be back on Monday

@Ubermensch See you later!
Enjoy the weekend.

3:51 PM
@StevenJeuris Bye and happy weekend

1 hour later…
4:57 PM
@BenBrocka: If you want I can change your comment here to "The Forer effect" instead of "The Horer effect". ;p

Q: When should I edit a post?

Steven JeurisWhile we inherit most of our editing conventions from the Stack Exchange (SE) network. I feel it is important to rephrase them here, and possible specify some extra guidelines specific to our site. Almost anyone can do suggested edits, but these will need to be peer reviewed first. The guideline...

3 hours later…
8:30 PM
@StevenJeuris go ahead...why do I keep typing that?
@StevenJeuris I don't really mind lots of editing as long as people don't mass edit unimportant things (which spams the front page with old content) and as long as we don't have tons of individual editors making small edits (which can knock posts into community wiki, but is very rare)

9:32 PM
Damn, ... I just mistook St. Bernardus for Westvleteren, while I was sure I'd be able to recognize the difference. Oh well, gotta love blind testings.
@BenBrocka Automatic spelling check perhaps? My spelling checking complains about Forer, but not Horer.
... oh, it does.

1 hour later…
10:52 PM
No automatic spell check here.

Q: Controversial questions

JeffConsider this question: Do porn and other remotely perceived entertainments work because of Mirror Neurons? This touches on a very controversial topic in Cog Sci, the idea of mirror neurons. Many pop-science books and magazines sensationalize mirror neurons, due to their parsimonious explanati...

I was thinking in this answer we should boldly point out that the primary important thing is people should be able to find the specific article to which you refer
3
A: How should references to journal articles be provided?

Ben BrockaThe following represents the preferred style for references and citations on this site. Broadly speaking, the site follows APA style. Following the style is optional, but all users are encouraged to edit posts that are missing one or more of the elements discussed below. Inline Citations Refe...

Wasn't 100% sure how to best phrase it so I thought we should reach a consensus if it's going to be a "guideline" sorto f answer
