to tell the flip side only one site that started around the same time or more recently has more traffic (i.e., mathematica)

@JeromyAnglim you really do post to meta all the time :P
Btw @Josh I can understand the SE team logic about not picking me as moderator. I am fairly busy lately so perhaps it's best you more meta-guys do the moderating

My preference would be for the four of us to be moderators.

@BenBrocka Okay, good. Thanks for mentioning that, I previously didn't know what your feelings were. I want to stand up for our users and don't want anyone feeling left out!

unless anyone did not want to be a moderator. I'm sure we all have work and related commitments, and we've all shown commitment to meta/chat/site related activity.

@JeromyAnglim I agree. That's why I was a bit shocked at first
@JeromyAnglim Then again I'm very confident that (at least based on the site so far) @Ben will have no problem geting elected in a real election

12:08 AM
That said, I'm not sure too much what difference it makes; you can do most things on this site without mod tools.
Agreed on the real election issue.

It makes sense letting the cog sci people focus on making content and more meta people focus on the moderation

True. And @Ben you should have the 10K tools now, right?

Issues like responding to flags and approving edits don't really require a knowledge of cog sci
moderator tools? TEchnically, I can't act on anything though

I will be lucky to make it to 2K, let alone 10K! And when we leave beta, depending on the community and the candidates for election and my experience, I may not even run for "real" modship

no tag synonyms
I guess I can cast delete votes
I guess I'll just flag whenever something's up and you guys can pick up the slack :)

12:10 AM
And see deleted content
And see flags
That's pretty much all I can do on MSO

@Josh Yeah, that's an important one
can I see flags?

I also remember with stats.se we had Prof. Rob Hyndman as a temporary moderator. I think it was good in the early days to have one academic as a mod, to add a little academic credibility to the site; he also actively promoted the site on his blog

@BenBrocka some of them

which reminds me, I need to get around to writing a blog post.

@BenBrocka If something's flagged as "it needs diamond mod attention" then it's confidential and only, well, diamond mods can see it
All other flags you should be able to see

12:14 AM
@Josh oh right, those can have direct messages to mods

That's right

@JeromyAnglim promoting the site to the academic community is definately something important...and something I can't help all that much with
I knew I should have kissed up more to my psych professors...

I spent a bit of time expanding my Google+ network the other day to include more psych academics.
I have a real world psych network, but my virtual network has typically been in the R / statistical computing world.

I have never really checked out Google+
I have a facebook account but rarely ever use it. All my free internet time goes to Stack Exchange :-D

@Josh a perfect mod :P

12:21 AM
XD
Also, I have set up an email address which you guys can contact me at.

I haven't really used google+ much, but I'm starting to like it; I've been on twitter for around 2 years, and consolidated a lot of connections, but, G+ has much more interactivity

It's in my profile as well as a link to a web form if you prefer

I don't like the idea of using facebook for academic stuff

If you mark the email as "High Priority" it will go to my mobile phone, too

my email is jkanglim@unimelb.edu.au or jkanglim@gmail.com ; either is fine

12:23 AM
And in case you didn't know I try and keep my "status" in my chat profile, so when you click my Gravatar in chat you can see if I'm really here or AFK
@JeromyAnglim cool thanks!

got to go out for a bit, ciao

@JeromyAnglim later!
I'm headed out to dinner as well
Catch you later @Ben!

Added @JeromyAnglim and @BenBrocka on G+, hope you don't mind. ;p
Do you use LinkedIn? That's what I figured is used in professional circles.

@StevenJeuris my linkedin profile
and my website with facebook profile link in case anyone cares
Welcome @George!
Now I'm really leaving ;-)
Keep George company @Steven ;-)

@Josh I seem to need your email address.
Hi @GeorgeEdison!

12:36 AM
@StevenJeuris it's cool, I have linkedin too

@Josh Commence self destruction. Got it. ;p

Q: What tag synonyms do we need?

Ben BrockaThe issue has been raised that we have a bunch of lab research related tags, and some confusion on nlp. What tags do you feel need to be "merged" or synonymized to other tags?

@StackExchange What's the deal with that robot anyway?

@BenBrocka I'm afraid its AI programming isn't advanced enough yet to answer that question. ;p

12:51 AM
perhaps we should ask a question on how to MAKE it advanced enough!

2 hours later…
2:22 AM
I'm on linkedin
I also asked on meta about how to promote on linkedin: meta.cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/130/…
Here's my linked in profile: linkedin.com/in/jeromyanglim
but honestly, I hardly use it.

Q: Moderator Pro-Tem Announcement

AarthiThroughout the beta, we need members from the site whose focus is to engage the community, both in community-building issues and site management. That's why we select a few members from each community to act as temporary, provisional Moderators. You can read about the program here: Moderators Pro...

@Jacob You have a funny hat! :-)

@Josh I've been a bit busy to take it off
@Josh nice Diamond

@Jacob Thank you

@Josh Hi

@Ubermensch Hello there. How are you doing?

Fine josh.

2:04 PM
Glad to hear it

A hi to Jacob.
Is there any software modeled on human mind (I haven't found one) since human brain is still not deciphered completely
And i believe AI and cognitive science are closely related

Congrats @Josh @JeromyAnglim @StevenJeuris

@BenBrocka thanks!

Hopefully they must have been selected as moderators
Kudos to all

@Ubermensch I'd be interested to see an answer to this, but the human mind is so complex I don't think we understand it fully enough to model software on it
@Ubermensch Yup, we were!

2:13 PM
@BenBrocka Thanks @BenBrocka. Tried my best to make them consider you as a mod as well, but I'm guessing their judgement is better than mine on this issue. Don't be disappearing from meta now! :)
@Ubermensch What about artificial neural networks sometimes used in AI?

@StevenJeuris I have gone through it (though not deeply) and I prefer FANN - leenissen.dk/fann/wp
And i also believe we can't have a truly intelligent machine and even if we create one, it can't be proved

@StevenJeuris They decided being a mod might keep me from asking/answering on the main site and they preferred to have a power user on there instead
I wanted that diamond >> but I guess this makes more sense

@Ubermensch Interesting subject! If you encounter any questions while reading about it, be sure to ask them here! :)

@StevenJeuris Sure steven (Hope I can call you Steven) I am thinking about a mass simulation project
If you are interested, we can keep this chat going for another 30 minutes (would be back after 15 minutes)

2:35 PM
do we have any brain-injury related tags?

@Ubermensch Perhaps on an evening, unfortunately I wouldn't be able to participate in that conversation at the moment. :)

Q: Brain injury related tags

Ben BrockaI asked a question in regards to Hemispatial Neglect, an acquired brain injury. I noticed we don't have any related tags yet as best I could tell. Should these be generically tagged as brain-injury or should they be specified as acquired-brain-injury, traumatic-brain-injury ect? Since we don't...

@Ubermensch Sorry Been busy but hello

Q: Hemispacial neglect question

These patients neglect either their left or right field of vision entirely, as if they couldn't see anything on that side of their body. How do these patients react when directly confronted ...

@Jacob Hi
@StevenJeuris No problems Steven. Would see tomorrow

Does this title edit seem appropriate?

Q: Study on commitment and follow-through

@BenBrocka Your edit? Looks great to me

Yeah, I'd like to trim some of the multi-line titles

I think Jeromy's title there was a bit long winded :-)

3:49 PM
I cut out the college students bit because, let's be honest, it was a psychology study. at least 8/10 your sample is college students

hahahaha

I was one of the few who didn't participate in psych studies (as a participant) because I was 17 at the time I took intro to psych

4:02 PM
I never participated in psychology studies as a college student, but when I was a kid my mom did practice Piaget's experiments on me
Also that makes my mom sound like some kind of mad scientist, lol

Piagets experiments aren't quite what most people think of when they think "child experimentation" :p
they're not nearly alarming enough
Public idea of "psychology experiment" = Inserting giant needles into your brain via your pupils
Which is absurd of course. There are much better ways to get needles into the brain.

Hello everyone. :)

@Aarthi hello

What's shaking? :D

@BenBrocka LOL
@Aarthi welcome back to our humble corner of the network

4:11 PM
i feel like i walked into the weirdest conversation. child experimentation? oh dear.

@Aarthi As I said, it's not like most people would think :P
Mostly things like "which cup has the most water in it?"

awww.
i think i did those tests as a kid

@Aarthi that will tend to happen in this room, LOL

so I can tell, heh.

And this coming from the person who referred to... um, "bears"... yesterday :-)

Q: What was the experiment where you pour liquid from a tall container to a short one and ask a child which has more?

Josh GitlinFrom Developmental psychology 101 I remember an experiment where the person conducting the experiment would pour liquid from a tall, narrow container into a short, narrow container and ask a child if the volume of the liquid had changed... or something similar to that. I can't remember if it actu...

4:18 PM
I did? Oh gosh, yesterday was forever ago.

@JoshGitlin Now show me on the doll where the bears experimented on you?

Oh yeaaaaah.

@BenBrocka AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Now I need to explain to people around me what caused me to burst out laughing :-)
I am still fascinated by the Piaget Theory of Conservation experiment even though I know it's a proven thing. Just amazes me to see kids get it wrong. IDK, probably silly but that's the stuff I love about psychology, little insights into how our brains work / develop

@JoshGitlin Oh dear, this is stranger than the Comms room.

Impossibru.

4:21 PM
@Jacob you're surprised that strange conversations follow me? You should know me better than that! ;-)

4:37 PM
Is the "new feed items" thingy the replacement for the @StackExchange spam bot?

Hmm? Ah, no, it just appears sometimes.

never seen it before today

...Well! :D

@BenBrocka That's one of the feeds I added to this room
There's two kinds, "messages in room" and "feed at the top"
You're a room owner of this room so you can alter those as you see fit

TIL.

4:47 PM
I made the Meta feeds post as messages in the room, thinking those would be fewer posts. But if they annoy people we can change / remove them

Okeedokee, I'm going to wander off to other corners of the site. :D I just wanted to pop in and say hello, make sure everything was running smoothly, and just do a general check.

I prefer the posts in the room because you can ignore @StackExchange (poor @StackExchange!) and then the messages are less disruptive

Haha, yes, poor @StackExchange!

@Aarthi thanks! I know how to find you if we need you!

And you can always superping, as well :D

4:48 PM
@Aarthi byebye

/waves~

I'm also going to be mostly AFK, but will be checking messages if anyone needs me

4 hours later…
8:48 PM
wow, our visits per day keeps rising

it's great!

Rigght, now I remember part of why I wanted to be a mod, the stats...wonder how our users count has risen
questions per day doesn't seem to have increased

@BenBrocka I can't share specifics of what I see with the mod tools, but let me just say this: thank you reddit!!!

I figured that's where the views were coming from, I'm more concerned with conversion

Quick suggestion, should I start a meta topic on how to do proper edits? I feel there are too many short edits going on.
When you edit ... please edit the entire post.

8:51 PM
Yeah, someone should tell that Steven Jeuris guy to edit more than one thing, what a jerk
:)

LOL
@StevenJeuris not sure if we need a meta post or not... um... maybe we can just contact the editors? How many individuals do you see making too-minor edits?

Seriously though, I've been concerned about lots of little edits because of the potential issues with source citations, we should decide on one citation style
2

@BenBrocka I was generally confused when reading that question with the unfinished like "" question. I was even more confused that the post was edited, so I reread it a couple of times to see what I was interpreting wrongly.
@BenBrocka I kind of like Jeromy's. One thing I found out with the style is you have to add a around each citation.
Jeromy uses a big 'References' header, and the ordinary font underneath that.

@StevenJeuris I know, I was going to complete the thought and then I

@BenBrocka Haha! I see what you did there. ;p
@JoshGitlin Is there some way how we can help get the citation meta post get extra attention. I feel that would be appropriate as well. We really do need to decide on this.

8:55 PM
IT happens, I tend to write one thing Oh then maybe a new paragraph for oh did I write the title right...

@StevenJeuris We can feature it

I currently have a powerpoint presentation that's just a pile of thoughts and I haven't bothered to put it in any logical order yet...
clustered indexes are for the weak

This one?

Q: Whether to add end of answer references as well as in text citations?

Jeromy AnglimIn this question on preferred referencing conventions, naturally, there is general support for including links to sources in the body of the answer. Ben Brocka also mentions the use of APA inline style e.g., "(Smith & Dean, 2000)" or "Smith and Dean (2000)", etc. However, should we encourage...

Is that the one which needs more attention?

I have barely seen any of them acted on, I think we need a single, agreed on format for rerferences period
there's currently like 4 meta questions about random aspects of references

I agree

8:59 PM
What style type, DOI or no, plus the references section thing

@StevenJeuris and I can merge meta questions together, if they're duplicates

They're not though

hmmmm

@BenBrocka I don't mind the occasional strange post, especially not contrasted with the great content it provides. I just found the editing thread a bit weird. Here is a related meta answer: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/81522/157047

we should probably just have a meta post that's an offical style guide: APA, DOI if possible, references at end of post preferred

9:02 PM
@BenBrocka If @JeromyAnglim accepts an answer to this question I think that could be what you're looking for, no? We can tag it and

if the answer was comprehensive and included all aspects of how references should be provided. None of the current ones fit

@BenBrocka why not edit yours and make it complete?

I would attempt doing this by example.
A poll type question haha. :) Where you have mockup answers, just laying out the general style. Lorem ipsum style.
It gives a much nicer overview of the different solutions.

specific inline examples would probably be better

That would mean another reference style question. But maybe the exact reason the discussions so far haven't been that fruitful is because the scope was too wide, people feel different about different parts of it.

9:08 PM
We can also edit questions to put them in line with whatever format the consensus on meta is

@BenBrocka True, ... forget about lorem ipsum as specified by Adams, Cecil (2001). :)

And we can (gently) encourage users via chat/comments to use the accepted style

@JoshGitlin WHY YOU NO USE APA (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
(that was in my clipboard so I felt like using it again)

hahahaha gently!
@BenBrocka it's beautiful, thank you for sharing it ;-)
I vote to feature this question and then we'll all just work to make one of the answers complete. Is this acceptable to you guys @BenBrocka and @StevenJeuris?

Okay, let's try to summarize on what we agreed so far and see which open issues we still have. Nobody complained about also adding references at the bottom.
How to visualize this is a different meta subject which I would start after we established which style to use.

9:14 PM
@StevenJeuris Yeah I think that's clearly a Good Thing

Perhaps merging Ben's answer to that question after we create it.
Can we do that? :)

@StevenJeuris Only if that question is marked as a dupe

I'm putting another answer together

@JoshGitlin In that case, turn it into a comment? Which it actually is as it wasn't entirely on topic with the question.

@StevenJeuris problem is then it loses the formatting

9:18 PM
Well, Ben is here. If we can ask to copy paste the answer to a relevant question and then delete it. Problem solved.

\o/

@JoshGitlin Still pondering on this. Working out how we can salvage the best out of the varied set of ref questions first.

Okay. I'm easy. Just let me know what you guys recommend :-) I do think we should feature something, even if it's not answered yet. Featuring it will help people come to a consensus

In my opinion Ben's APA style didn't get enough lovin'.
Might be worthwhile starting a specific question asking which style to use. Instead of the more general one we have now.

A: How should references to journal articles be provided?

Ben BrockaThe following are the preferred elements of proper citation for this site. They are optional but if you see a post missing one of these elements, please take the time to edit them in. Inline Citations References should be in APA inline format. This allows the reader to know where a claim is com...

9:27 PM
Like I said earlier, separate the issues so the answers are more coherent.

@StevenJeuris I agree. I upvoted but only one other person did

@JoshGitlin That would be me. :)

A better example of APA (from a real Q on the site) would be ideal

Figured :-) Yey for seeing vote-splits. That's my favorite feature. Yes, I'm slly
Okay... I think I'm a little confused. To me, it seems like the answer @Ben just provided is great, and the question he answered should be featured. What's too general about it @Steven?

@BenBrocka The only way I can see that post to be improved is by adding an example list at the end.

9:32 PM
Also @StevenJeuris can we close this since we're already in public beta?

@JoshGitlin It doesn't address the preferred layout yet.
@JoshGitlin Wouldn't locking be more suitable?

@StevenJeuris I think closing as "too localized" but I have never been able to lock before :-)

@JoshGitlin ... but don't get me wrong. I'm all for using that post from Ben as FAQ. He indeed did a good job of summarizing the other posts.
I'd say let's feature the question and hope it gets some up votes!

Great. @Ben do you agree that we should feature the question you just answered (again)?

We should make sure it has some better examples first, maybe a full example post inside a quote block?

9:39 PM
@BenBrocka That's what I would separate. You did a good job of specifying the requirements. We can start another post to outline the formatting.

Perhaps a question stating the rules with an accepted answer that's an example?

That way we can also link to your answer, stating this is a summary of the current convention on how to reference. It will hopefully get some extra attention, and the formatting examples serve as actual examples and help in resolving those issues separately.

Well featuring it just draws attention to it, it doesn't have to be perfectly answered yet

@BenBrocka Well, we could ask @Jeromy to accept your answer!
I'm guessing he might be on line later tonight.

Do the stats show if user count has been increasing noticably lately?

9:47 PM
@BenBrocka sorry... :-(
> analytics data is intended for moderators only; please don't share the specifics of this data in public

That's hardly specifics...

10:03 PM
@BenBrocka Well, as you can tell from the public data as well, we have a steady stream of new users!

@StevenJeuris ohh, I see
10 in a day, 15 in two, not bad I guess

@jeromyanglim When you read this, could you please accept Ben's great summary on how to properly reference articles if you agree with it? We are trying to finalize this decision. We also featured the question so it would get some additional attention. If people don't agree with the accepted answer they can let us know.
Now, on to the styling issues! :)
I'm starting a style question now. Just letting you know so you (or me) don't waste their time. :)

10:28 PM
I don't think our accounting department knows what "deterministic" or "confidence interval" mean

I'm looking for a real life question candidate to use as a template for the formatting question.
Suggestions?
Preferably short, and including all aspects which where discussed.

I don't know as we have any. Most include just one or two or none

@BenBrocka Thanks! Will incorporate it in the question. Feel free to edit afterwards if I missed something.

His name should be fun to try and type ;-)

Oh unicode, you so crazy

@kcin ... don't see the problem! :)
@BenBrocka, what's the APA style on "et al."?
mention first author only "et al."? Or just the first author?

10:56 PM
Up to 5 they should all be mentioned in the first citation. With 2 people they should be mentioned every citation owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/03
For the site it's not the biggest deal if people do first author, et al as long as it's not the only citation though...DOI and or a full reference citation would cover it, but do it right for your example
heading home now

@BenBrocka Inline? That's a lot!
@BenBrocka Great points. Perhaps you could update your answer to reflect this as well?

yeah, it's why after the first cite for 3-5 people you only use the first name and et al

@BenBrocka just saw your question about Little Albert. Now that is child experimentation! Sad story too, the kid supposedly died ad about 6?
Okay, I'm off for the night!

Just a sec! :)
Almost finished the formatting question. :)

sure :-)

11:04 PM
Should we feature this as well, or wait for more response to the other question first?

I'd say wait a bit, but, I'm open. We don't have much featured right now.

Q: Should we decide on a general formatting style for references?

Steven JeurisThere are already a couple of great suggestions on how you should reference articles. These have been summarized by Ben in one all encompassing answer. From this another question arose how to properly format these references, particularly how to format the reference list at then end of an answer...

There you go. I'm considering adding a list of items which should be formatted at the end.
Or at least should be considered. E.g. the wikipedia [2] link. References area ...
@JoshGitlin I'll wait until Jeromy decides whether or not to accept Ben's answer.

@StevenJeuris sounds good!
Okay, taking off now!
If anyone needs me, @Josh me, or you can contact me via email
Also @BenBrocka, check Skype ;-)
