@StevenJeuris Yeah, I'll take a break too. Answering questions here takes even longer than UX!

@StevenJeuris and @BenBrocka, I agree. I posted easy questions only because, well, these are some of the only questions I can think of given my last psych course was 12 years ago, haha. Also, I wanted to try and fulfill my commitment during the private beta. But I've posted enough questions for now; I'm going to focus on edits, meta and chat

I've got an hypothesis about meta SE sites which just came to mind while reading some answers. I'm pretty sure it's a psychological phenomenon. Once people pick sides in a discussion, they have a very high tendency to stop approaching the discussion from the other angle, how it could work. I feel a much better discussion format would be two columns, pro and con, counteracting the 'you say something, and I disagree' pattern.
It doesn't make sense that you are 'entirely' against a proposal, but somehow once people decide in general how they feel about it, it's like they stop thinking rationally.
Perhaps a 'two columns' discussion design would eliminate that. Unfortunately I can't ask on main as this is probably way too basic. :)

Interesting points @Steven!
I doubt MSO would upvote such a suggestion, however :-)

Haha! Not wasting my time posting that to MSO, but interested in whether my intuition can be founded in any way.

Oh I have seen that completly
People will dislike certain parts of a proposal, and then become vehemently against the entire thing
I'm sure I could dig up MSO examples, but, I am about to go get some breakfast. Real waffles beat MSO waffles any day ;-)

Enjoy breakfast!

thanks! :-)

Q: Do people have a tendency to stick to one opinion after they formed it?

Steven JeurisScytale's assessment, from the science fiction novel "Dune Messiah" (1969) When a creature has developed into one thing, he will choose death rather than change into his opposite. While reading some discussions on Meta Stack Overflow, it dawned on me that it might not be the best format t...

I stole a phrase you said here and put it in my question. ;p It sounded nice.

OMG it's in private beta!

5:55 PM
@StevenJeuris haha, no problem. I'll check that in a little bit, been busy doing chores etc. About to grab some lunch
@MattЭллен Welcome! It is, and so far so good!

i've been waiting for what feels like forever!
I just checked my email :D

6:23 PM
Piaget? what would he know? His name's an anagram of pig ate

6:40 PM
@MattЭллен You can hover over the statement you want to reply to, and click the arrow button. Makes it easier to see who you were replying to. ;p

@StevenJeuris Thanks! Although it was just a non sequitur :)

@MattЭллен Chat is pretty advanced, I believe I still don't know all the features. It's a pity it isn't used more often. It actually has something to offer over traditional chat rooms. Wouldn't 'ate pig' make more sense btw? :)

Oh, well I'd be lying if I said I'm a noob! You should see how much time I've wasted over at EL&U chat. Yeah chat is a great place for the community to come and figure things out.
@StevenJeuris Yeah, ate pig is a more logical way to put it :D

@MattЭллен It has proved very useful so far. It would be worthwhile if we can get some more professionals on here and on meta, especially during the private beta.

6:55 PM
indeed. I would love to see some lecturers or professors even!
I'm still getting used to the site - what the content of questions should be.

That's the purpose of private beta. ;p If you feel like contributing, there's plenty of related topics on meta.

Q: What is the proper way to deal with questions that are off-topic?

JoshSometimes questions get posted to the site which are off-topic or outside the scope of this site. What is the best way to deal with such questions?

@Josh Should we really restate all common SE wide practices here on meta?

I'll give it a look. I really want this SE to take off!

@MattЭллен I can't assess this professionally as it isn't my area of expertise, but judging from some of the given answers on the site, it looks like we're definitely off with a good start. Meta is pretty active as well, and it seems like there are plenty of people interested in creating quality content.
One of the biggest problems atm is we have too many unanswered questions, but that's probably because one person seeded excessively with low quality questions, but that issue has been resolved.

7:45 PM
@StevenJeuris The default assumption is that SE rules apply in full, especially since our FAQ is fixed except for "what questions can I ask here"
which we should start looknig at soonish when we get pro-temp mods

8:07 PM
Ooooh, I actually know something about one of the questions.

Q: Can mental exhaustion be measured?

DavidI asked this question a long while ago, but I never got an answer to whether mental exhaustion can be measured. If mental exhaustion could be measured, it would mean that I would have a way of knowing the performance I can get out of my brain in a day. I would be able to know what is best for ref...

I just flagged a comment as obosolete, let's see whether moderators look at it :)
The whale question got a long way! It's pretty good now. I flagged the 'improve this' comment as obsolete.

8:34 PM
Comment flagging works different I believe, 5 flags as offensive/ect and the comment is deleted and -100 rep to the poster

@BenBrocka wow ... even for obsolete?

@StevenJeuris That question looks okay now and the anwer is great

That wouldn't make any sense.

I don't know, usually we ignore obsolete questions or suggest that @user delete them
it's pretty rare that a comment gets 5 flags, usually only if it's spam or offensive

@BenBrocka The question isn't obsolete, all the comments are. The question is okay now, and the comments are just noise.

8:36 PM
comments are often noise :P did you use the flag on the question or comment? Either way I wouldn't worry about it

@BenBrocka On the first comment in the row. (Josh's)

@StevenJeuris I figured this one was important enough to restate, especially if we get users who are not familiar with how Stack Exchange works

Don't know as much about the comment flagging system. It seems to be a mostly unused feature

all MSO topics, clearly not
but we do need a FAQ, and I think that one may be asked frequently enough / we may need to refer to is frequently enough that it will be useful to have.
Also, how to close will change as the site matures and we get migration paths, so I thought a topic on the current state would be useful
But, I'm just doing what I think would be helpful -- constructive criticism welcomed! If others think I'd unnecessarily duplicating content please tell me!

Hi @InquilineKea!

(Going AFK now, be back in a bit)
also, welcome @InquilineKea!

Hi :)

@InquilineKea hello

8:57 PM
@InquilineKea: I really liked your whale question. ;p The question ended up being really good.

(and I am back)

@Josh Welcome back.

Personally, I would label this as a badly phrased question, so I left a comment redirecting to the relevant 'initial research' meta post.
Actually to me it seems, if he would have written less, it would have been a better question. It's the disorganized assumptions without links that make it seem low quality.

9:57 PM
@StevenJeuris Thanks! Just responded to your MSO question with a more detailed explanation of my reasoning. I will gladly remove my question if the community feels I should!
@StevenJeuris re-reading that question, one moment...
I see what you mean...
it does ramble all over the place a bit
I've starred it; I'm not quite sure how it can be improved right now, I'll check back on it later and see if I have any ideas...
also will be interested to hear how he responds in the comments
I liked this question:

Q: Does caffeine improve performance for habituated consumers above pre-habituation levels?

Jeromy AnglimI've seen a fair few studies over the while that suggest caffeine increases arousal in the short term and that for some tasks, this will also increase performance (there's a few citations here). However, as with most drugs, habituation leads to withdrawal effects and adjustment, so that in some ...

@Josh A bit heavy on the bold though. :)
Also sounds a bit like a skeptics question.

Q: Online data repository of research in the cognitive sciences

Jeromy AnglimSharing data is an important part of science (e.g., see APA discussion). It's also often useful to be able to have access to datasets when teaching students how to analyse data in the cognitive sciences. What online data repositories for research are available in the cognitive sciences (e.g., p...

This is very well phrased. We could still use a consensus on poll like questions at this point! :) But this definitely is what I had in mind with a good one.

I'm sticking to my opinion. Added a reply to Grace Note in the comments.

A: We have too many unanswered questions

Robert CartainoThis is mostly a cautionary tale, but "seeding" this site with questions simply to add to its bulk sounds helpful, but in all likely hood, it is actively harming this site. I wrote about this extensively in Asking the First Questions …but a few key points are most poignant. I was a ...

I've gone and voted to close all negatively voted questions in the unanswered questions list, please add your vote if you agree any questions should be closed. You can view the low-voted questions here: cogsci.stackexchange.com/unanswered/tagged/…

@BenBrocka Read my comments.
I don't entirely agree. I would be very selective with which ones to close. Only those that seem hopeless, ... "not a real question". ;p
I do suggest a cleanup yes. Let's post candidates here and star them.

Yeah, expecting a 93% answered rate seems pretty unreal for this field, however I still think we need to nuke some of the seed questions
As I just noted in a comment on that post I've deleted a couple of my questions as well

@BenBrocka Well, that I find is a better approach! Since most of the problem questions are from one user, can't we just contact him and ask him to delete the ones he is least interested in for the time being?
Closing them as "not a real question" seems plain wrong to me. People would get confused about what is on topic.

11:29 PM
Depends, the ones I voted to close weren't very good questions either
It would probably be most constructive and easiest to ask @InquilineKea to delete some of his downvoted/0 vote questions since closing questions is very difficult at this point

I'd even say delete up voted questions which don't have answers. He can still ask them at a later point when the site is more mature.
Especially the ones he didn't re-edit yet.

yeah
We want to make sure the start of the site is representative of what it should look like (as unreasonable as that kinda is)

I think The @InquilineKea should work. This effectively notified him. ;p I'm guessing he'll be open to the idea.
