@BenBrocka: This one is not constructive: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/54/…
It's way to broad.
Closing this one would be better as removing it, could clearly state these type of questions aren't appropriate here. At least in my opinion. ;p
This one seems to be phrased a bit 'too localized'?: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/121/…

12:20 AM
I don't feel this is constructive either, or even on topic: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/53/…
As in @shanusmagnus his comment comparing 'apples to oranges', probably not constructive: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/46/…

12:37 AM
Hm okay - I've flagged cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/35/… and cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/47/… - and have asked for them to be migrated to the biology SE

@InquilineKea Seems like a good idea.

I'm looking at the other questions and am thinking of what to do to them later - some of them are actually very important for me, and I think they can be generalizable to others too - specifically - the ones about "pattern recognition", which I'll concede is sort of vague, but I still think captures something that deserves more attention than it has gotten.

@InquilineKea There's plenty of interesting questions you asked, but unfortunately the site can't handle them. ;p Have you read this meta post?

I've looked at it. I do think that the question can be improved (with some feedback) before it's closed.
okay, the borderline PD question could also probably be migrated to the biology SE I think

Exactly, which is why @BenBrocka and I opted to delete them instead.
Closing makes it seem like they don't belong here, which is not really the message we want to send.

12:43 AM
but can we migrate instead of deleting?

@InquilineKea Of course, if you feel that they are better of migrated, by all means do so. I would think the two questions you posted are perfectly valid at biology.

admittedly, i remember someone complaining about my cross-posting, instead of flagging them o migrate them
ah okay
so that's why i'm flagging them to be migrated rather than deleting them

@InquilineKea Agreed, a better option at this point. Either way it will increase the answer rate.

the one thing with deleting questons: is there any way for me to see the text of deleted questions?
I've had deleted questions from SE before, and I found it frustrating because I couldn't capture any of the text (even the ones i modified) so that i could post them somewhere else

@InquilineKea I recall deleted answers remain there, I'm not sure about questions. You could temporarily copy paste them to a text file? :) Also, delete the unedited ones first, I've come across plenty of really good edits you did.

12:47 AM
oh okay. have any of my questions been deleted yet? I know that a couple were closed.

... and then again, you might want to wait until we decide on this properly on meta. But as far as I understand, closing them as "not constructive" "off topic" or "not a real question" seems wrong.
@InquilineKea No, I'm not aware of mods ever deleting questions. Normal convention is to close them so they can later be reopened if something were to change.
This one seems to be a bit broad to me as well no?: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/24/…
I'm no expert, but it seems a bit vague and unanswerable in its current form to me.

Yeah it does sound somewhat broad. Hmm. I'll migrate it to Quora for now then.

@InquilineKea That would mean deleting it here right? Mods can't migrate from here to Quora. ;p

Yeah - I just need time to put in all the details before deleting here

@InquilineKea No stress. ;p Just out of curiosity, how is it that you've got such a varied set of knowledge?

12:55 AM
can I recover questions I deleted though?
hmm, for some reason I just want to learn everything. Hard to explain how it came about.

@InquilineKea Define 'recover'? When the site is a bit more mature you can try to repost them yes.
We are just trying to create an attractive environment for professionals when the site goes in public beta. A long list of vague/incomplete questions of which only 40% are answered isn't that.
So in the long run it is also in your interest, since an unhealthy beta could result in the site being closed down.

meaning is the text of deleted questions archived somewhere so that I could see what they are later?
i do try to save questions whenever possible, but I have had some difficult issues with other SEs where they deleted my questions without warning
Also though, some of the comments on deleted questions are helpful
and I'd like those saved if possible

@InquilineKea I don't have a clue. You can search for/ask such questions on Meta Stack Overflow.

okay sure i'll ask a question on that there then
does anyone here have the power to independently delete questions? just wondering.

1:12 AM
@InquilineKea AFAIK, not anyone from CogSci. If stuff got deleted it has got to be 'higher powers', cross-site moderators. I wouldn't see any reason why they would meddle with closing question while a site is still in private beta, let alone delete them - if that is even possible.
@InquilineKea I feel this one is off topic as well: cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/43/… Best to flag/merge it to biology?
See this meta post.
@InquilineKea: Voila, I up voted another one of your question to make up for all those down votes I gave you. ;p

1:36 AM
Okay - I just flagged it to be migrated to biology

@InquilineKea: If you are so interested in these two (very similar) questions, consider rephrasing them considerably. Look up official terminology of 'pattern recognition' for example.
But I'm heading to bed now. Thanks for cooperating! I really hope this site gets of the ground.

@StevenJeuris Thanks Steven! Sorry, I kinda wandered off there and never got back to you, haha!
@BenBrocka I wish I was here when that was posted. I just commented to Robert and am going to review the chat transcript now. I'll post my thoughts in a follow up message in a moment.
@StevenJeuris Better yet, I think we should have a chat room specifically for the issue Robert raised. In fact, I invited him to chat. Steven and @Ben and everyone else, thoughts? I've been thinking we may want a second chat room for more "meta" is talk anyway...
@InquilineKea this was Robert himself who complained of cross-posting, but I explained to him you misunderstood how to have posts migrated. If you flag questions and ask for migration, Robert will see that. (I believe this is what you said you were doing)
@InquilineKea I want to say yes, but, it's 12:13 AM here, so I am tired and may be incorrect. If you can't easily find the answer let me know and I am sure I can help out
Reading all these messages, I do believe this discussion should be taken to it's own room @BenBrocka @StevenJeuris @InquilineKea, so I have created a room for it here:

 Cognitive Sciences Meta

Administration issues for Cognitive Sciences
in Cognitive Sciences Meta, 9 secs ago, by Josh
This room is to discuss procedural / administrative / meta topics about the Cognitive Sciences Stack Exchange site. Please only star messages for actionable items, like posts which need editing / closing / migration / mod attention, etc.

5:30 AM
Okay, I'm going to bed now. Thanks everyone for your hard work! (CC @BenBrocka @StevenJeuris @InquilineKea)

K, copied remaining problematic questions I identified to the other chat room.
We should probably redirect people from meta to there though, otherwise they won't find it. Chat ain't very popular.

@StevenJeuris Saw your comment on Ben's question, that's helpful, thanks!

"18.9% signed up for beta", this, is a problem.
Oh, n/m, those are the followers, not committed users. But still "52.5% signed up for beta".

2:35 PM
@Josh, did you read my latest arguments pro Q&A community wiki polls?

@StevenJeuris ummmmm I think I skimmed it yesterday; it was a busy afternoon/evening for me. I'll take a look now

I also updated the answer to better reflect them.
And if this would set the standard for polls, I'm definitely all for it!

yeah, very well argued, you make good points! +1
headed AFK now, will check back in later

Q: What type of learning mechanism produces a consistent typo?

Matt EllenThere is a typographical error that I make and do so every time I try to type a certain word. Whenever I try to type remember, I type remeber. I do this every time. This is different to a regular typo because most typos happen at random, whereas this mistake is guaranteed to occur. It's not a spe...

I'm having a similar issue where I always type 'possible' instead of 'possibly', and I'm pretty sure I'm always thinking to write 'possibly'. Only after rereading I notice it.
What the F is up with that?
Either way, ... dinner, cya.

5:35 PM
Cool, the comments I flagged as obsolete on the whale question are removed. So they are definitely looked at.

5:50 PM
@StevenJeuris we covered something like that in cog psych...I think I lost my notes for that class though. I'll look into it later

@BenBrocka If you do, I better formulate it as a question. Answered questions also increase answer rate. ;p

1 hour later…
7:20 PM
@StevenJeuris ask a question about why you would replace words with other words, that I know we covered. Specific typos that arent' words I don't reemmeber explicitly covering

@BenBrocka Suitable tags? , ?

Q: Why do you sometimes write down one word while actually intending to write another?

Steven JeurisI've caught myself writing (typing) "possible" instead of "possibly" over the past few days, while I did intend to write "possibly". Only upon rereading the sentence I notice I've written the wrong word. It is not a typo, as I am able to touch-type on a qwerty layout. 'e' and 'y' are both writte...

Tried to do at least some background search, but don't have too much time to do any more atm.
I figure you can just answer such questions linking the OPs to the relevant phenomena without going into detail. These type of questions can prove useful for people like me, interested in finding more about it, but not knowing what to search for, as in your guidelines. ;p
