@Josh The classic "don't game our gamification system" reply...
I still have a fullfilled commitment and it's a new SE day so I think it's either more than 4 or it requires questions

@BenBrocka Well, it can't be awarded before the second day of the private beta. That's today, right? So you could get it tomorrow, but also, it may take a day to receive it, so probably the day after... or, you have to ask some questions :-)

It's the third day of private beta :P
regardless I'm okay with waiting, I was just wondering what the metric was

...it is?
Where have I been for two days? LOL
1
Cognitive Sciencescogsci.stackexchange.com

Beta Q&A site for practitioners and research professionals of the cognitive sciences

Currently in private beta.

SE uses UTC time. I got 40 rep 1 day, hit the cap yesterday and today is a new day, three "days"
That's probably ticking once every 24 hours
meaning it should only be one day off...so there may also be other weirdness going on there

Your profile says "member for 3 days", you are correct :-)
oh, it's the third day by 9 minutes, LOL
you'll probably get notice that you fulfilled your commitment sometime today
If not you can ask "Has any research been done on how Jeff's lack of clarity leads to frustration and eventual insanity?"
;-)

12:11 AM
I'm sure jeff has led to at least a few dozen psychotic breaks

hahaha me too

11 badges in one day. This is fun

Okay headed off to dinner. Thanks for all your hard work on the site @Ben! I think this has the potential to be a great Stack Exchange site, largely due to contributors like yourself.
@BenBrocka nice work

Bye
thanks :)

A: Can you ask questions that involve lists where you want to learn the items on the list but also what is best?

Steven JeurisYesterday I've been looking through meta SO for some guidance on this, and it seems there is no consensus on this matter at all. The general guidelines from the faq are: To prevent your question from being flagged and possibly removed, avoid asking subjective questions where … ever...

We have to decide on this ...

2:16 PM
@StevenJeuris Working on an answer, but "real work" is distracting me. -1 to real work! ;-)

@Josh I just finished for the day I guess, another 30 minutes to waste and I'm done. ;p

What part of the world are you in @Steven?

@Josh Belgium, well no, at the moment The Netherlands. But I'm from Belgium. Same time zone anyhow.
@Josh Does that mean you are about to disagree with me on the topic? :)
I didn't see any down vote.

@StevenJeuris Nice!
@StevenJeuris No, I think ultimately you're right, we as a community must decide
Here's my proof tat you're right:

Q: Exclude Community Wiki questions from the 'hot questions' list

Kyle CroninIt's no secret that Ask Different is more lenient than most other sites when it comes to allowing poll-like questions. We feel that a select few poll questions that are educational and well maintained are a great way to add some fun to our site, but to still stick to the principles of Stack Excha...

Apple.SE has decided to allow poll questions
yet, they're going against the grain

@Josh Really? Weird

2:30 PM
But clearly Robert is displeased

@Josh But the given example is terrible. I don't see any merit in allowing such questions.
But if your point is we can decide on a different point of view, that seems promising. The idea I had is as mentioned, to only allow strictly defined constructive polls.
Welcome @BenBrocka and @ThomasOwens btw!

Hey @Thomas!
Glad to see you here.
@Ben / @Steven I'll respond in a sec, lemme finish this answer

I'm at work, so this is just in the background for when I'm doing something in the backround that takes a while. I'm probably not here, even though I'm here.

@ThomasOwens This is not the place to raise existential issues. ;p

Oh PDFs, I forgot how I hate you

@ThomasOwens Same here

A: Can you ask questions that involve lists where you want to learn the items on the list but also what is best?

JoshWhen you posted that, I downvoted and voted to close it. I didn't intend to cause offense and didn't downvote because what you were asking for was off-topic or was a bad question. I tried to close it with extreme prejudice because it's the early beta and with some of my experience elsewhere on t...

Welcome @MattRockwell!
@StevenJeuris TL;DR version: I think it's unwise of us to rub RObert the wrong way ;-)
So we should use chat for polls

Ehh, still seems like an odd way to use the format
I sort of wish SE sites did have a more classical forum taped on somewhere for the more opinion quesitons.

@Josh Cool idea, like I said, but I prefer the Q&A format.

@StevenJeuris no problem! Just throwing in my $0.02
@BenBrocka You're not alone here :-)

Don't chat stars get outdated btw? Are they ranked by 'up votes'?

@StevenJeuris They do not, I believe

2:54 PM
We should definitely give it a shot then, so we can see how it turns out.

Also, chat is definitely SEO friendly. I have used Google to find dome of my earlier chat messages

I'm heading for Belgium. Cya later.

What's the opposite of a neurobiological basis for a psychological effect? Basically a better way of saying an effect is a result of nurture not nature?

@StevenJeuris have a safe trip, catch you later!
@BenBrocka The best I can give you is a star :-)

I'll just ask a question :P

3:03 PM
\o/ yey for your first? question!

0
Q: What is the term for a psychological effect which does not have a neurobiological/genetic basis?

Ben BrockaWhen a psychological condition is the result of irregular brain structures or neurotransmitter imbalances we say the condition has a neurobiological basis; this is analogous to the classic Nature in the Nature vs Nurture discussion. What is the term for a condition which does not have this sort...

as a side note we're going to need a nature/nurture tag, is nature-nurture okay or nature-vs-nurture? I know they're not actually opposed but that's the classical way the discussion is framed

But +1 either way, good question!

0
Q: Nature vs Nurture tag naming

Ben BrockaWe're going to need a tag for the Nature vs Nurture debate; even if that phrasing is oversimplistic, it's the way the discussion is classically framed. I've applied the nature-nurture tag to this question but I'm not sure how it should be worded. Perhaps nature-vs-nurture would be more clear. ...

3:53 PM
Welcome @BenCole!

Hey @MattRockwell

@BenBrocka Hey!

Surprised there aren't more UXers here actually

i keep telling a lot of them

The Area51 stats are clearly out of date, but they say:
204 users committed
43.1% signed up for beta
0% fulfilled commitment
That's an underwhelming amount using the private beta

4:07 PM
nearly 50% seems like a very high response rate
Especially for the long commitment period
Plus we can't have filled commitment till private beta is over, which I'm sure is to keep people from saying "welp, I'm done!" and bailing before private beta is over

@BenBrocka You're right, I was thinking they committed to the private beta specifically. Please ignore me :-)
I want to ask more questions, but am stumped as to what to ask. I was going to ask a seed question about Piaget and Conservation, but it's too basic. (First google result clearly answered my question)

@Josh But...is it right? Is the answer you found thorough and understandable?

@BenBrocka Yeah. Basically I was looking for who did the experiment where you pour liquid from one tall vessel to a wide short one and what the principal is called. I knew it was Piaget, was going to omit that from the question because I was trying to seed. I had forgotten it was called Conservation but could have easily found that by searching for "Piaget"
First and second results for "child pour liquid tall container" left me with no questions, LOL

we had this discussion at ux.se a while back
it turned out that we even wanted simple googleable answers as long as they were comprehensive
because if you think about it, down the road google will index the answer and when someone searches for it, it will send them to cogsci.se instead of the other site you just went to
3

4:23 PM
Hm, okay! You agree @Ben? A simple question like "What was the experiment where you pour liquid from a tall container to a short fat one and ask a child which has more" is okay, or is it too basic?

which is better traffic for the stie

@MattRockwell good point!

of course, be careful of flooding the site with overly simple answers...
but it's good to have a little bit of everything, then the site will appeal to all levels of expertise

LOL Stack Exchange
> The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed.
No, no it's not subjective
I promise you ;-)

@Josh wait what?

4:26 PM
simple answers
like the discussion that led to me creating the question "What is a modal dialog window"
simple and google-able, but part of a catalog of knowledge that is on our site that keeps people coming to our site instead of the next guy in the google resutls

@Josh we have a thing that prompts you like that?

@BenBrocka We do indeed
Okay, READY FOR THE FEEDING FRENZY?????
LOW HANGING FRUIT -- ENGAGE!

Q: What was the experiment where you pour liquid from a tall container to a short one and ask a child which has more?

JoshFrom Developmental psychology 101 I remember an experiment where the person conducting the experiment would pour liquid from a tall, narrow container into a short, narrow container and ask a child if the volume of the liquid had changed... or something similar to that. I can't remember if it actu...

haha
@josh here is the example question I was talking about

Q: What is a Modal Dialog Window?

Matt RockwellWhat exactly is a modal dialog window and when should you use it? Are there certain cases where you should refrain from using one?

@MattRockwell ahahahaha that's pretty basic!
It's a good and important question though!
So, well played!

@Josh How does it guess that?

4:32 PM
@Josh Thanks, yours is well played too "I'm hazy on the details" haha

@BenBrocka Badly, LOL. I'll dig up some MSO threads.
probably looking for words like "more"
I'll guess that's what triggered it in my case
if(question.title.match(/more|less|better|worse|best|worst|like|dislike|recomme‌nd/) displaySubjectiveWarning()
@MattRockwell LOL thanks. I actually had forgotten if the water was poured or not, but I believed it was otherwise even an adult could be wrong. It's been 12 years since I took a psychology course, LOL.
I also forgot it could be done with play-dough and the like
Thanks @BenBrocka!
Okay lunchtime!

5 votes and I can approve edits :)

6:30 PM
@BenBrocka yey!
Hmmm, Robert Cartaino♦ seemed to agree my question was not constructive...

Q: Useful References for Cognitive Sciences

JoshI figured this might be useful, espescially during the beta while we define what is on- and off-topic and seed this site with initial content: What are some useful references for us to use in asking / answering / researching /questions? EDIT: I now think this discussion is not constructive and ...

But he didn't vote for this answer, maybe he's just allowing us to learn on our own. Who knows

1 hour later…
7:36 PM
Tried to pull together some resources for this one:
0
A: What is known about how sleep works and why it's necessary?

Ben BrockaThe APA has a broad overview of Why Sleep is Important on their site. Sleep occurs in discrete Sleep Stages which all have their purpose. Consider asking about specific sleep stages as research related to specific stages exist. The most important parts of sleep are the REM and Deep Sleep stages...

More specific questions would be helpful though

I was afraid of that...

Sleep is an extremely expansive topic with relatively few conclusive answers. It's a good start though, there are many interesting questions to ask about sleep
By the way, if you want to have trouble sleeping tonight, I suggest you read this and other resources about Fatal Familial Insomnia to remind you how important sleep is

hahaha thanks. I actually normally sleep very well, as long as I don't think about work too much, LOL
Dreaming about work / code SUCKS
I agree, my question may be too broad. Feel free to vote to close, it could serve as an example of a poor question, lol
@BenBrocka this is a good answer to a poor question, however!
> Theories about the function of rapid eye movements
> Other theories are that they lubricate the cornea, warm the brain
Woah, really? People believe the rapid eye movements warm the brain!?!
what, like, through friction? I don't believe this, LOL

7:52 PM

Oh, wait, are they saying it's the increased blood flow which warms the brain? That makes somewhat more sense to me :-)
Fascinating stuff, thanks @BenBrocka!
Oh, hm, interesting:
> Eye muscle tone also increases
So maybe it's for giving our eyes a weightlifting session haha

@Josh Now that I've answered it would be a conflict of interest :) I'd rather see how the community reacts, personally I prefer to answer such questions if at all possible and/or prompt the user to ask more specific ones

@BenBrocka Yeah, I totally see what you mean. I'm going to read the excellent links you provided and I'm sure that will give me some more specific questions!
Also, have fun accepting edits now! \o/

Crap, I still don't get the review tools thing that lets me do all that from one screen

http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/review/ ? (there we go. I know Markdown. Really I do. It's typing I seem to epic fail at)

8:06 PM
there's a mod tools tab that lets you easily go over pending edits
I get that at 750 I think

Ahhhh

Which is also the earliest anyone will be able to approve a tag wiki

I couldn't even create those
http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/suggested-edits/26
http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/suggested-edits/27

Looks like SE mods like Anna Lear are approving edits

Yup, I saw Robert approving a number also
all of mine from yesterday were approved

8:15 PM
Was wondering if they just left edits floating in the ether or what

8:50 PM
LOL @ Captcha

9:02 PM
.... and I'm in Belgium. Starting to hate those trips, but at least I was able to get some work done on the train.

9:16 PM
@StevenJeuris How long do you have to travel?

@Josh uh ... 3 hours 30 minutes or something. During the busiest periods around 2 times a week. The disadvantage of studying in The Netherlands I guess.

Yuk, that's one heck of a commute! On the plus side you get to be in The Netherlands! :-) I've always wanted to visit there

@Josh Even got a dutch girlfriend out of it. ;p

lmao!

... who is now working in England, so I'm commuting there as well every now and then. :O
Coming to think of it, I should post a question on the psychological effects of travelling like that. I don't really have any place I can call 'home' anymore.
But that might be off-topic as 'personal development'.

9:22 PM
I'd say go for it, let the community decide
As long as you don't make it personal it should be OK

Usually I don't post questions without doing research myself first. I'll post only when we have a lack of questions, which isn't the case now.
Don't have time for research, encountered another paper while browsing around which I just have to incorporate into my thesis. Another 18 pages to digest.
... booh! Another one of my crazy ideas got down voted. At least I could return the favor.

@StevenJeuris Good idea. But if you can't find anything after a little research, by all means, ask!

Q: Is Behaviorism incompatible with Cognitive Psychology?

Ben BrockaBoth disciplines have historically been at eachother's throat, Radical Behaviorists like B.F. Skinner often completely reject cognitive psychology at a philosophical level. It seems that today Behaviorism has largely fallen by the wayside but certain principles like Operant Conditioning remain e...

@Josh: Better make that instead of in your answer.

9:41 PM
lmao, thanks!
Looks like @BenBrocka FTFM. Damn work!

Just making it obvious he has editing privileges which we will only obtain after x months due to a lesser intellect. :)

hahaha

10:09 PM
I find it amusing how question #1 is related to question #100
then again I am clearly easily amused ;-)

@Josh Does that mean we are done? We got them all? :)
The circle is complete!

LOL
fastest... beta... EVAR
I still find Piaget's experiment fascinating, even though I have learned it and seen kids not know the amount is the same, it's still amazing to watch them get the answer wrong :-)

Oh ... forget I realized something relating to your meta-post answer on the train ... let me write it up.

Almost as fun is to watch stupid Developmental Psychology students find a kid who is too old, and press him to answer the question wrong, lol
"They *do* have the same amount of water? Are you *sure?* Doesn't this one have more? It's taller!"
"Yeah, you just poured the water from that one, I saw you! I'm eight years old, and you're in college, and you think that one has more? Boy you're stupid!"

@Josh Searched for it, great example question!

10:18 PM
@StevenJeuris thanks! I was worried it was too basic

Well, you know my stance on that I guess. I agree that we better open up the site for a wider audience, as long as the answers are accurate and scientific.

And I approve of your making the site more open!
Okay, I am done with work for the day and am headed... somewhere... to do... something. LOL. I'm full of great ideas right now as you can see. LOL.

So that makes your question a nice example of this meta post, which seems to be scoring high.

Good point!

There is at least 3 other people besides us that voted on that! :) That means we aren't monopolizing meta anymore! :) hehe

10:21 PM
yey for community formation!
Alright I'm outta here. take care @Steven!

@Josh ttyl!

10:50 PM
Posted several questions, now I'm noticing we're really hurting for answers not questions...

@BenBrocka Only now? :) That's why I refrained from posting too easy questions for the time being. There's plenty of better ones which can be answered first at the moment.

11:36 PM
Cool, I can't participate that much on main, but I guess I might be the first with a silver badge because of meta. :)
'Convention' get!
