Hello people. Long time. I wonder if you have ideas for this situation:
Say I have an image consisting of a few colors (say 6), a background colour, and a mask. I want to inpaint it. A huge majority of the image is masked and needs to be inpainted. The colors are spread in disconnected blobs, and not all dithered. The result should join the similar colours together in some reasonable way
Actually, this is for a 3D image.
and even more actually, the "initial blobs" are actually segments inside a few vertical pillars in the 3D image
so, it's a problem of interpolating those segments and joining them together creating non-overlapping 3D regions that more or less look reasonable

@Rojo I have several ideas, but I'm not sure how they work out. One thing you can do is to invert your mask. That should leave you with the masks for the blob objects. If they are separated, you could start with a DistanceTransform for each object separately. This gives you a measure for the shortest distance from each object which in turn could be used to calculate a color.
This all can be tricky and not obvious. You might also have a look a WatershedComponents but I'm not sure of how much use it is on your real data.
@halirutan What I mean here is that the distance transform can give you a measure for positions between the blobs where you don't have a color. If you define a color vector v_n for each color you want to use, you could combine colors by creating a (fake) n-dimensional basis in the 3d RGB space and calculate the final color with smth like a1*v1+a2*v2+...+an*vn where the factors a_n depend on the distance to the n-th object.

Has someone seen this before:
Oh, this is a Catch22. ;) Whenever I try to upload a picture using imgur via the button on MSE from Chrome I do get that the message "Image to large" even though I have not chosen anything...
I noted that this will only happen using Chrome, Firefox works fine.

Why my Unevaluated don't work?
`Graphics[Thread[{Unevaluated[RandomColor[]], {Disk[{83, 69}, 2],
Disk[{34, 32}, 2], Disk[{68, 90}, 2], Disk[{75, 84}, 2],
Disk[{69, 91}, 1]}}]]`

2:25 PM
Does anyone have a suggestion for how best to minimize a non-differentiatiable slow-to-evaluate function of 6 variables?
You can do it with Hold (but need to explicitly release it): Graphics[ReleaseHold@
Thread[{Hold[RandomColor[]], {Disk[{83, 69}, 2], Disk[{34, 32}, 2],
Disk[{68, 90}, 2], Disk[{75, 84}, 2], Disk[{69, 91}, 1]}}]]
Not sure that Unevaluated is supposed to be used like that.

@KraZug Thanks,I know the Hold+ReleaseHold Should work.I just surprise the Unevaluated cannot. :)

2:49 PM
@gwr and does regular upload picture work?

My Wolfram fandom is getting out of hand. I just got a 1 kg cube of tungsten alloy...
A perfect gift: heavy and useless.
At least if you are trying to find practical uses for it. :)

@kirma Speaking of gifts and heavy..
Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed.
She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!"
The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.
Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house.
She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

@kirma Not good? I found it lately on reddit or imgur and it brought a smile on my face. At least a tiny smile.

It's a smile of sorts. :)

@halirutan Speaking of Germans. I started hosting couchsurfers three weeks ago. I've hosted 13 so far. 5 have been German. And tomorrow it's supposed to rise to 7 of 15 being German.

4:07 PM
@MichaelHale Uhh, I hope you had the opportunity to meet some of your beautiful girls.

@halirutan It's been fun so far. No bad experiences. I don't know if the Germans are all on vacation right now or if they just do more couchsurfing.

@Kuba If regular upload picture means, the one I get within the answer or post question box, then the answer is: No.

@gwr Currently, imgur is in serious trouble since a few days. It seems not connected to your issue, but anyway.

Thanks, @halirutan. This is btw what I see when I go to "AskQuestion" and then try to upload a picture. I cannot even "Cancel" or "Close"...
To this here, I had to switch to Firefox by the way.
Needless to say that I deleted Browser history, cookies and what have you...

Can anyone help me find some names of sources for ... High pressure Oxygen supply system of a spacecraft life support system ....I know that this demand is outside the scope of Mtmtka. But I have need to help if you are enable .... like ...

4:58 PM
@gwr Have you tried Incognito Mode?
(I ask because I had a very mysterious issue with our universities vpn which worked in incognito mode but not otherwise)

A: Intermittent Failed to upload image; imgur is rejecting the request

Nick CraverIt appears that S3 has fallen over in AWS for the US-EAST1. Ironically I can't include a screenshot of the dashboard in this post, but I promise I have one. You can see the AWS status dashboard here: https://status.aws.amazon.com/ Imgur uploads should return successfully once that issue has set...

For those wondering (like me) why so many images don't load since yesterday

@Szabolcs They are busy at Amazon delivering my books :)

:D

5:21 PM
I just watched a PBS Nova program and I am pretty sure it featured one of our members, @YvesKlett

@Mr.Wizard Yep, that's Yves.
@Mr.Wizard Some years ago we met in Berlin and he held a talk about his folding stuff that is used to create stable interiors for e.g. the body of planes.

@halirutan Thanks for confirming. Very cool stuff.

@halirutan Incognito Mode works - beats me. Now Eclipse suddly triggers Wolfram Activation while everything ran fine 5 minutes ago ... bad day for me here. :-)

6:34 PM
@gwr Let's say I had a hunch..
For your other problem, I'm pretty sure you have some kernels that died and still run in background occupying a license.

@Kuba I just answered a question which got an answer just before me by a time difference of 4 mins. Both are almost identical just some formatting difference. What should I do?
http://mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/139064/how-to-take-the-derivative-of-a-function-w-r-t-just-one-of-the-arguments

someone else can also response

7:09 PM
@MMM Usually, if the answers are basically the same aside from formatting, and I answered second, I would delete my answer

MMM
@JasonB Thanks for your response. Can you please check it and suggest?

@halirutan Thanks, good ideas!

8:20 PM
@Mr.Wizard seems somewhat familiar 😉
@halirutan I still remember your amazing talk about using Mathematica to design/engrave your wedding rings.

8:49 PM
@YvesKlett I am happy to see you here. I wasn't sure if you would respond. :-)
@YvesKlett Seems I missed several cool things.
@Rojo Happy to see you here too, even though I think I just missed you.

@Mr.Wizard ah, glad you like it! Not a lot of time to stick around, mostly.
Drop by in Stuttgart any time, I'll give you the tour.
Always happy to respond, BTW.

@YvesKlett I doubt I'll ever be able to take you up on that offer, but I sincerely appreciate it nevertheless. It would be grand. By the way is there a public paper on your work that featured in NOVA? I'd like to learn more about it.

There are plenty of papers, plus my dissertation, but (for my sins) most of it is behind paywalls or in books. I highly recommend the Origami5 and Origami6 books (not only cos I have some content in there).
Let me take a look what may be available.

9:13 PM
@YvesKlett Hehe, yes that was the same occasion.

@Rojo If you like to share real example data or if you have questions, I'm happy get into details.
If someone likes to read, why our beloved imgur was in trouble, here is the blogpost that contains details of the Amazon S3 service disruption.

@Mr.Wizard looks like I'll be in Cleveland in August for a symposium...

9:40 PM
@YvesKlett Thank you, that's a nice introduction, age notwithstanding.

Does anyone know how to completely remove all the vertex coordinates from a Graph, and have it use one of the builtin embedding algorithms for the layout?

@JasonB Wouldn't that be the same as producing a list of edges or adjacency matrix and reapplying Graph?

There could be any other properties defined
but yeah, I suppose Graph[VertexList @ g, EdgeList @ g] is simplest

10:14 PM
@JimBaldwin I hope it is OK when, for now, I don't look at your implementation. I love to do this myself, and you already gave me the key information I was missing. From your images, it looks like it is what I want to do. Fisher is coming tomorrow and I want to embrace this. In retrospect, I really don't know why I never came across the Wiki-site myself. I think I never did such an extensive search without finding a clue.
Additionally, I see now that I could have asked this question here. Luckily, I have a related but harder problem that is definitely of general interest. I'm sure I will post the details soon as it is easy to understand, there are several ways to attack it and there doesn't exists a perfect solution :)
