@MrWizard thanks for pointing out that I had misread the problem. But, did it require the downvote? :P

2:41 AM
Hi @yoda.

hey @rco

saving on typing?

lol.. I actually had to press one extra letter... normally it would've been just r-tab

as long as you're not straining yourself, one extra letter shouldn't give you RSI.

how's the <bleep> coming along? ;)

2:45 AM
Gotta get back to work on the f<bleep> thing tomorrow. The presentation took up a lot of time last week.

btw, do you have suggestions for drawing lines from one panel to the other in levelscheme?
Have you seen Szabolcs's question?

no, actually I don't.
And, yes, I've seen his question.
Sick munchkin, no time today to work on it.

ah crud. I was hoping you'd have some clever trick up your sleeve
@rcollyer hope nothing serious...

The only clever trick I ever had with it was creating my legend using an energy level diagram, i.e. a level scheme.
@yoda just a cold, but he's losing his voice from the coughing.
Hi @MrWizard.

@rcollyer I didn't mean to be harsh. It was a dysfunctional answer; a downvote seemed reasonable. Votes are supposed to be for answers, not people, but I suppose there is some unavoidable crossover of feeling. I did not mean any disrespect.

2:49 AM
@MrWizard As I had read the question, sans the top line, it seemed perfectly reasonable to me. Yes, a little annoyed. But, it has been a long couple of days, so I'll get over it. Besides, you were right, I had completely botched it, so the criticism was valid.

Remember that downvotes are not counted on deleted answers. Next time I botch an answer (and I often do) return the favor, but please remember to remove the downvote once I fix it. :-)

Besides, I put extra effort into trying to break your solution to get my frustrations out. I couldn't despite my best effort. And, then Leonid came along, and showed me that my best effort missed a few points ... Nice solution, btw.

Leonid does that sort of thing. ^_^ Thank you.

@MrWizard That's why I deleted it. Your solution was superior to any I was going to put together. And, I'll definitely return the "favor," or just rib you mercilessly until you fix it ... :)
Any one know who starred my link?

Actually the downvote is effective; if I see a reputation drop of 2 pts I know something's up. A comment may take longer to get around to.
Which link?

2:54 AM
the one on the right about street names.
@MrWizard yes, but not nearly as much fun ...
And, no I actually wouldn't do that.

Ah, that street name. Nope, not me.

To see it starred was a little embarrassing, but I did put into a public forum. So, I haven't bothered with removing the star.
Since I have a mod here, how do you (or anyone else) feel about links that are not inlined?

and... swoosh

@MrWizard you didn't have to do that.
I have privileges here, so I could have done it myself.

Oh, right, well anyway. :^)

2:58 AM
Thanks, though.
So, on to the inlined link question ...

Re: links, I think they are a bit ugly but honestly I don't mind if they are offset like that; in the body of a paragraph they are pretty distracting.
A link with a descriptive title is best IMHO, but (link 1, link 2, link 3) is worse than the raw URLs.

I was a little ambivalent about this one, as I thought it could have been included in the text, but not enough so that I'd actually edit it.

Any reason you are reluctant to make edits?

@MrWizard that is only useful in one case, when you are discussing multiple things in the preceding sentence.

Oh, I didn't mean in body text, I meant in a bulleted list.
There's no point in breaking it out into list form just to say "link 1, link 2, ..."

3:02 AM
@MrWizard I'm generally reticent about making edits. I will make them, but I try only to make them when something has to be done, e.g. marking up code, formatting code, egregious grammar/spelling. But, I try to leave posts alone as I view editing potentially dangerous.
@MrWizard yeah, that is completely awful.

Dangerous specifically how?

It has the potential to change the OP's intent, especially if there is some ambiguity in what they are asking for. So, I try to hold off.
be right back.

okay

gotta run

Alright, see you later. About time I go too.

7 hours later…
10:15 AM
@MrWizard Tomorrow. I have a meeting today in the afternoon, need to prepare.

@Szabolcs you're killing me. ;-)

@MrWizard There was a discussion on SO about auto-changing [[ to \[LeftDoubleBracket], etc. Do you remember if there was a working solution, and do you remember which post it was (I can't find it but I really need it)

10:58 AM
@Szabolcs sorry, I thought you were gone. Do you mean this one?

3 hours later…
2:26 PM
Hey guys

hello

I have a stupid math question

This room is for users of Mathematica, a "software"... you probably want this room:

 Mathematics

Associated with Math.SE; for both general discussion & math qu...

Ah sorry

No worries :)

2:47 PM
Based on reputation per post, @Heike is no. 18 on all of StackOverflow, and @Leonid is no. 43 (and he doesn't even have any posts that went viral).
2

Impressive! But, I think, very well deserved on both counts.

3:21 PM
@Szabolcs Without that Waldo post I suspect my average would be somewhere in the mid 60s

3:51 PM
I guess I should have read a little closer, but tag badges are not available until there are 100+ questions in the tag. So, while both @Heike and @MrWizard are eligible for badges in and , respectively, no tag badges will be awarded until they hit 100 questions. Thus far, is ahead. So, everyone we need to start asking questions to turn this into a real race. :)

Are there any better ways than this to make a colourbar?
colorbar[colorFunction_: Automatic, divs_: 20] :=
 DensityPlot[y, {x, 0, .1}, {y, 0, 1}, AspectRatio -> Automatic,
  PlotRangePadding -> 0, PlotPoints -> {2, divs},
  FrameTicks -> {None, Automatic, None, None}, MaxRecursion -> 0,
  ColorFunction -> colorFunction]
Is there an easy way to have ColorData["VisibleSpectrum"] scale from 0 to 1?

@Szabolcs `ColorDataFunction["VisibleSpectrum", "Physical", {0, 1},
Blend["VisibleSpectrum", #1] & ]`

@OleksandrR Hm, that still gives me purple only between 0 and 1
ColorData["VisibleSpectrum"][
  Rescale[#, {0, 1}, ColorData["VisibleSpectrum", "Range"]]] &

@Szabolcs sorry, you're right (ColorDataFunctions aren't as transparent as I'd thought). Alternatively: cf = ColorDataFunction["VisibleSpectrum", "Physical", {0, 1}, Blend["VisibleSpectrum", (#1 + 380)*(750 - 380)] & ]

Also, I wonder how to set the size of "cells" in a GraphicRow, for example, based on the colorbar function from above,
GraphicsRow[{DensityPlot[
   Sin[Norm[{x, y}]], {x, -10, 10}, {y, -10, 10}], colorbar[]}]
Item with ItemSize does not work, as in the case of Row.

does anybody have any thoughts on this

Q: Using physical dimensions in Mathematica DSolve

LLapsusI would like to calculate a system of two differential equations in Mathematica using DSolve, like: fx''[x] + a*fx[x] == -I*eta*fy''[x] - b*fy[x], ... where fx[x] and fy[x] are unknown functions. Using DSolve I can easily find some solutions of the type fx[x] = C[1]*cosh[x/L] + C[2]*a*sinh[x/...

Your answer is what I would've written too... sometimes the correct answer is "Do it yourself; don't try to make Mathematica do it for you"

acl
@yoda I am uncomfortable with giving a mathematical answer, but I also feel quite strongly that this question is in the wrong direction (putting everything into dimensionless form before attempting to do numerics is something one learns either in a classroom or after a lot of pain)
like solving ODEs with factors $10^8$ and $\pi$ for two terms in the same equation, this is just not a good thing to do
or anyway that's my opinion, and I was wondering if anybody objected to this sort of answer here

I personally don't think such answers should be disallowed... This is in fact a way of tackling the problem the OP had, perhaps not in the manner that they had intended.
For funsies, perhaps someone could attempt to get mma to do this for them, but that's not going to be me =)
The fruit's not low enough or worth the time (technically, on a vacation) :)

acl
and you have to learn to do it anyway if you ever have to do this for real
@yoda good weather?

@acl moderately pleasant... it gets worse very soon (I'll be out by then) :)
ok, I'm done editing...

5:46 PM
@acl I have to agree with you there. Either you non-dimensionalize or things go horribly wrong for you.

Q: Can a compound pattern have a default value? {min_, max_} : {0, 1} gives an error.
A: Yes. But then the whole pattern must have a name: range : {min_, max_} : {0, 1}
Or just write the FullForm of it.

Q: Sizing items in a GraphicsGrid/GraphicsRow

SzabolcsI would like to add a colour bar to a plot. I tried to use GraphicsRow for this. In a GraphicsRow, each item is given the same space, resulting in this: Clear[colorbar] colorbar[colorFunction_: Automatic, divs_: 25] := DensityPlot[y, {x, 0, .1}, {y, 0, 1}, AspectRatio -> Automatic, Plo...

acl
@rcollyer I personally also have a conceptual problem with solving non-dimensionalized DEs numerically, but that's another story

I know, I have to learn LevelScheme ... but I don't like it ... and graphics are getting to my nerves today
sorry about the basic question

@acl I'm curious. Do tell.

@Szabolcs I can't see a good way to do it. Alignment -> Left fixes the appearance but the aspect ratios are still wrong and there's a blank space on the right of the graphic.

5:51 PM
Exactly. So I don't want to export it like that.
I came up with Row[Show[#, ImageSize -> {Automatic, 300}] & /@ {dp, Show[cb, ImagePadding -> 20]}] but then I can't make the whole thing exactly 360 pt wide (which is my text width)

6:08 PM
@Szabolcs is this for use in a latex file?

@yoda Yes.
@yoda Okay, I got your point ... you mean why don't I include them separately? Maybe you are right.
Maybe I should delete the question.
But if someone is writing an answer now, they will be annoyed.

This acceptable to you?
You can remove the frame all... that was just to test things

With size/6.5 changed to Automatic, yes.
Thank you.
It's a little inconvenient to export it to size, but it's okay.

@Szabolcs Yeah, I don't really worry about the exact dimensions of my figures (to match \textwidth), but instead focus on the aspect ratio... then you can just include it and do \includegraphics[width=\textwidth]{path/to/fig}
@Szabolcs Did you still want to delete it?

@yoda I don't know if there's a better solution

6:19 PM
you'll have to wait till heike wakes up =)

but I don't want to delete now in case someone is writing up an answer
She should go to bed soon
well
it's 6.20 PM there

3 hours later…
9:29 PM
@Szabolcs I wondered if my answer was enough of an addition to R.M.s?

The frame is a nice touch! :-)
Both are very good
The main inconvenience (not problem, just an inconvenience) is that I cannot do Export["figure.pdf", graphics, ImageSize -> 360] because it won't respect the image size. (It will, but it will not scale everything)
This is always true for Grid but not for GraphicsGrid

@Szabolcs Almost sounds like another question. Is that an issue with setting PrintingEnvironment to Working? I'm sure there was a question about that on SO

@Verbeia No, it has to do with how Mathematica calculates sizes. A difference between Grid and GraphicsGrid is that with Grid the size of each element is calculated and the complete grid is sized so it can contain them while with GraphicsGrid a container grid is first set up (at fixed size) and then each element is shrunk o it can fit into the cells. At least that is how I understand it after this afternoon
